LUIS AND THE WILDFIRES "BRAIN JAIL" 2007

“One of the wildest records of the year!”Luis and his gang go for broke on their savage debut album! Recorded in LA's legendary Wild Records garage studio and issued to worldwide acclaim on the red hot WILD label on CD, the album makes its vinyl debut on Norton with two exclusive bonus cuts! Includes the dance floor monster hit Let's Party. The Wildfires blend together such influences as Johnny Carroll and Slim Harpo with a garage whomp and a solid nod to their Mexican musical heritage with a cover of Tony Casanova's Yeah Yeah Come Another Day. The Wildfires continue to tear it up on stages at major rock n' roll festivals from Spain to Japan. After witnessing their insane show, astute talent scout Todd Abramson was led to remark, “I've just seen the new Los Locos Del Ritmo!” The band was recently nominated for an AVN award for Best Porn Soundtrack to Vivid Video's THE REBELLE ROUSERS.traxfromwax:

"Mello Jello" ...For Groovy Ghouls

More musical mayhem from this groovy little series -- a mad collection of rough-edged obscurities in a variety of different genres! Styles on the set range from novelty rock to instrumental pop -- but all tunes have an unbridled sense of fun in their approach -- a real love of the goofier sides of music, served up with searing guitars, honking horns, and some really crazy vocals! There's often as much to be said here for the production tricks as there is for the artists performing the music -- and in keeping with the title, some of the tunes have a horror rock undercurrent. CD features 19 tracks in all -- with titles that include "Pot Party" by Burt Topper, "I Don't Want To Leave The Congo" by Norman Arab Sands, "Wild Girl" by Orville Couch, "Snake Charmer" by The Puddle Jumpers, "Fried Onions" by Lord Rockinghams XI, "Suspicion" by Los Pekenikes, "Bucket O Blood" by Big Boy Groves, "Dog Food" by Wes Dakus, "The Evil Dope" by Phil Phillips, and "March Slav Boogie" by Homer Denison Jr.trax:

Bo Diddley "Drive By Tales From The Funk Dimension" 1970-1973

While Bo Diddley is rightly regarded as one of the crucial pioneers of rock n roll, the period covered by this album has been unjustly slated by purists in the past: purists who believe that making the same record over and over is the way to do things. If you’re a purist and a snob you miss out on stuff like this: there is only one example of the one thing which Bo originated, the ‘Bo Diddley’ beat used by everyone from Buddy Holly to Johnny Marr: instead it is full of (for the most part) funked-up grooves, primitive guitar riffs and solos, and progtastic Hammond organ. This is (for the most part) a great compilation by a true original from a neglected part of his career-grab it if you see it and wallow in it’s own brand of funkiness. (Soul Patrol)From 1970 to 1974, over four albums, Bo Diddley went through some significant musical changes, taking a funkier direction than his better known, earlier recordings. At the time the albums were not greatly admired by the majority of his older fans. But with the passing of time the rise of funk and hip-hop cultures has resulted in a re-evaluation of Bo's early '70s albums, with modern producers and DJs plundering the old vinyl for the rare grooves and backbeats (as used by De La Soul in 'Buddy', for instance). This carefully chosen collection selects from all four albums - The Black Gladiator (1970), Another Dimension (1971), Where It All Began (1972), Big Bad Bo (1974) - for 20 tracks ranging from funky jams with slashing guitar rhythms and furious organ solos to urbane jazz-funk with sophisticated brass arrangements. The Above "The Above" 2010

Brooklyn's newest ambassadors of garage, R&B, and freakbeat unveil their formidable debut record. Featuring raw guitars, soulful singing, wailing harmonica, and primitive pounding drums - in short a proper driving energetic rock'n'roll sound that will soon have you shaking like it's 1966.If you like the primal energy of early Who/Kinks/Creation, or just superfine rock 'n' roll, this record will surprise you and rock your socks off! As far as i'm concerned, this is already the album of the year. (Ratboy)trax:

The Mermen "Sunken Treasure" 1999

This CD chronicles one hot night in Seattle in early 1997. All live and loaded with their trademark sound, pristinely recorded by Roz Jones. This band's live performances are very magical, and often far more inspired then their studio work. Part of the reason for Jim's preference for multiple amps and complicated effects matrices is his need for something on the edge of out of control to counterbalance his complete guitar control. The pressure of that immediacy adds an another element to the music that can only be experienced when you can't go back and fix it. This is a stellar live set of music. - Phil DirtTo satiate the appetite of the band's rabidly cultish fan base, the San Francisco trio released a pair of live CDs documenting various 1996 shows. Sunken Treasure (compiled from a series of soundboard recordings) appeared in late 1996; its successor, Only You, was released the following year. Compiled from various performances on the heels of Songs of the Cows' release, Sunken Treasure includes a few oddities throughout its 66 minutes -- most notably the heretofore unreleased "Joni Mitchell's House" (a much smoother take than that found on Only You), a relaxed run-through of the Sentinals' early-'60s hit "Latinia," and the rarely performed "Blue Xoam." Aside from that, it's mostly Mermen-by-numbers here. But that's no slag: "Dancing in Her Sleep" and "With No Definite Future" each lope along lazily like a moon slowly rising over the clear Pacific sky, while "Pulpin' Line" and "Drub" bookend the set with jagged riffing and rhythmic pummel galore. Although it's a cut below other Mermen live recordings, Sunken Treasure is still worth hunting down for obsessive fans of the band. - Charles Hodgkins, All Music Guidetrax:

"MELLO JELLO" ...For Mello Muffins 2006

Superb lp from the makers of Wavy Gravy for Adult Enthusiasts and Hairy Policemen that came out in the eighties, this is a new offering in the same vein. Weird tracks from the fifties and sixties including some from the Mad Daddy s 1958 playlist such as JANIE MADE A MONSTER / CRAZY CHEMISTRY and GHOST SATELLITE. In between each track is a trailer for B movies typified by the psychotronic oeuvre. Excellent sound quality and many impossibly rare records. This would especially appeal to fans of bands like the Cramps.Nothing mello about this sweet little set - because the tunes are loud, nasty, and filled with plenty of sharp edges! The collection really trawls around the bottom side of the indie rocking spectrum of the late 50s and early 60s - digging through the dirt to come up with some incredibly raunchy tunes that run the gamut from rockabilly to novelty rock to instrumental R&B - and lots of other styles in between! There's a sound here that's as playful as the cover image and the title.

The Barracudas "Complete EMI Recordings" (1978-1982)

A great compilation from a sadly under-rated band, formed in late '78 and continuing until 1982. There was another line up that continued after this but they aren't on this compilation. Influenced by everyone from the Ramones, The Stooges and the Beach Boys, this cd deserves to be in everyones collection. (Mondo de Muebles)trax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 8 - Mystic Males

The eight installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-three psych/pop nuggets from the ‘60s, all with a male touch. From the same with-it collector-folks who brought us those Gentle Sounds For Gentle People '60s soft-rock comps not so long ago, comes this new compilation unearthing the tunes of 23 "tripped-out troubadours from 1965-1970". These so-called "Mystic Males" are long-haired, bearded (or at least mustachioed) mellow crooners, hailing from places like LA's Sunset Strip and New York's Greenwich Village. Professional and otherwise singer/songwriters getting into (for real or for, they might be hoping, the bucks) the Hippy vibe. Mostly, they sing about Girls. And Nature. And Love. And Girls. (At least five of the song titles here are simply girls' names.) Suiting such subject matter, these tracks tend towards gentle vocals, gentle vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and drifting folky melodies -- often times backed by lush orchestration and groovy beats. Some are twee, some are swingin'. Hadn't heard of any of these dudes before, except Dino Valente, but maybe you have -- here's a few, with song titles too: Chip Taylor "You Should Be From Monterey", Tommy Roe "Paisley Dreams", Teddy Neeley "Autumn Afternoon", Kenny O'Dell "Flower Girl", Thomas Hill "Glider Pilot", Bill & Howdy "Misty Morning Confrontation"... no, don't know 'em? Well those song titles ought to give you some idea of what they sound like, and also the liner notes give plenty of obscure details about each obscure track. And some of 'em are gems. We like these Mystic Males. ~ by aquariusrecords.org.

The Aqua Velvets "Backflip Louie And The Pool Party Pagans" 2005

This is the 6th release by the Aqua Velvets, and is the most rootsy party album the band has ever done. while earlier cds have been more moody and movie soundtrackish, this one they did in the studio for pure FUN!! Perfect music for your next Pool Party! The band features the original songs of guitarist Miles Corbin, who also has 2 solo cds. The SF Chronicle described the group as " ..neo surf, spagetti western, secret agent, b-movie mambo music..".Fun, upbeat tunes perfect for your next tiki pool party. The Aqua Velvets are known for their lounge/jazz surf style and this album adds a pool party feel to it. As always, the songs are of high quality and very original. This is probably the Aqua Velvets' most fun and upbeat album to date. While every song is enjoyable, the few that stand out the most include the playful Hey You With the Sneakers On...Out of the Pool, the hauntingly cool Bamboo Torches, and extremely loungy Out of the Sand and into the Swing. Since the 1st album, The Aqua Velvets have defined their own unique niche in the genre and this album does not disappoint. Reviewer: Alex Hoffman

- Thorsten

The Cheepskates "It Wings Above" '88

It Wings Above continues the Cheepskates' creative ascent: it's a small-scale pop revelation with sturdy tracks like the breezy "Someday," the haunting, beautifully constructed "Baybee" and the vividly descriptive, boppy "Cathode Prison." There are swatches of saxophone and glockenspiel, and the overall tone is brighter. Songs like the stunning "Goodbye Princess" and "From Light to Pouring Rain" occasionally swirl in a heady Game Theory (or even "Ride My See-Saw"-era Moody Blues) direction. (Trouser Press)trax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 7 - Sounds Of She

The seventh installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-three psych/pop nuggets from the ‘60s, all with a female touch.A gal-themed set from the great Soft Sounds series -- one that features some incredibly groovy work from the late 60s -- a hip mix of Sunshine Pop, psyche rock, and more! The female vocals really tie the tunes together nicely -- especially as a number of singers seem to share similar modes when approaching their music -- echoes of earlier folk, touches of vocal jazz, and occasional sweet sounds that really flesh things out nicely. Most of the backings are groovy enough to almost be funk at points -- especially when percussion kicks up, or basslines really get going -- and there's also some freakishly fuzzy moments that really stand out too! As with other volumes, there's some great track-by-track notes on the tunes -- and titles include "Psychedelic Movement" by The Ravelles, "Green Plant" by Amanda Ambrose, "The Aquarians" by The Aquarians, "If I Didn't Want To See You Anymore" by Morningstarr, "See The Farmer" by Bunches A Good, "The Lady Barber" by Lynn Castle, "What Do You Do When You've Lost Your Love" by Guardians Of The Rainbow, "Flowers In The Air" by Sally Eaton, "Billy Sunshine" by Sugar Townes, "All I Dream" by Estelle Levitt, "In The Middle Of The Night" by The Pipe Dream, and "Meditation 1968" by Ellen Margulies. ~ by: Dusty Groove America, Inc © 1996-2010.

The Cowslingers "That's Truckdrivin'" 1995

Also included here is The Cowslinger's 1995 "That's Truckdrivin'!" EP, which I also ripped from vinyl. To my ears, this is exactly how cowpunk should be done. This EP was also released on CD with a few extra tracks, but is long out of print and going for about $50 on Amazon. Hope you and your readers enjoy! - Billy K18 WHEELS TO HELL can hold its own anywhere on this planet. I've never heard country and hard driveing rock put together so well together on a cd before. The Cowslingers have what it takes!
The Cowslingers were born when Greg Miller was accepted into Kent State University. Having performed in groups throughout his university years, mixing classic rock sounds with punk and also rockabilly. While touring around the university circuit, the Cowslingers developed a loyal following for an energetic live show and high-octane performances. In 1993, the group released its debut effort, an EP titled Bad Booze Rodeo, on Drink 'n Drive Records. In 1994, the debut album, Off the Wagon, was released to wide acclaim in rock and cowpunk circles. The Cowslingers released its second album the same year, That's Truckdriving. Constant touring throughout the Ohio area spread into dates on the East and West Coast. In 1995, Greg Miller asked his brother, Ken Miller, to fill in for the band's bass player. In 1996, A Fistful of Pesetas was the band's third album and more praise followed. Often compared to Reverend Horton Heat, Supersuckers, and Southern Culture on the Skids. In 1997, the Cowslingers released West Virginia Dog Track Boogie on Shake It Records. In 1999, the group was nominated by the Cleveland Free Times as Best Country Act and another album, Americana a Go Go, was released. The following year the same newspaper voted the Cowslingers Best Punk/Hardcore Act, demonstrating the group's adaptability. Two albums, Boot 'n' Rally and Coast to Coast, followed in 2000. In 2002, the Cowslingers released an album of rare tracks, titled Bull's Eye, on Orange Recordings. ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music Guidetraxfromwax:

"CONCUSSION!!!" - 18 Gougin' Instrumentals 1958 - 1965 (Mr. Manicotti Rec)

Git ready for a concussion!!! Here's 18 crude mood instro whompers from the sonic age of the big guitar, 1958-65! As none of the promo gents representin' these twangy titans lit up the Mr. Manicotti phone lines, we're left with limited info to accompany this special audiophile release. (liner notes)In the late 50s and early 60s, many a teen picked up a guitar in emulation of minor hitmakers DUANE EDDY and LINK WRAY & formed bands dedicated to furthering the vocal-free, rough garage band sound. This brief instrumental ascendancy is not to be confused with surf music, though there’s no doubt that they were 2 sides of the same coin, and that many of the bands vacillated between both forms (the reverb-drenched & the non-reverb drenched). I went through a brief period myself in the early 90s gobbling up as many 50s/60s instrumental compilation LPs as I could afford, since I’d fallen hard for Link Wray’s stuff and had also picked up a couple of the Crypt Records “STRUMMIN’ MENTAL” comps that set me on the obsessive instrumental-freak path. You know what, though? My favorite of the bunch is not a Crypt release – it’s “CONCUSSION!!! – 18 GOUGIN’ INSTRUMENTALS 1958-65” on the relatively release-challenged Mr. Manicotti label.traxfromwax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 6 - He & She

The sixth installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-two psych/pop nuggets from the ‘60s, all with a male/female duo touch. This installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-two far-out pop psych duos from the late ’60s. It pretty much began with Sonny and Cher. When the teener template of Paul and Paula and Dick and Deedee got superimposed on the hip set, a new genre was born. The success of co-ed pairings like Mimi and Richard and Nino and April had coffee house folkies shacking up in droves and soon every town had it’s own dynamic duo. There were variations too. Paul and Mary found their Peter. John Phillips had two chicks so he had to find another Papa. But the sound was what made it, the call and response, the traded verses—love stories acted out over twelve-strings ringin’, like shaggy-topped Romeos and Juliets in tight slacks and pilgrim belts. You’ve heard some of the reissues—the Blackburns and Snows, the Jims and Jeans—their stories and music made public again after years in obscurity. Now hear the ones who didn’t quite crack the radio charts, at least not for long. The ones whose songs remain unsung. Heroes and heroines in the nightclubs and studio booths. Reaching out in the darkness, and the sunshine too. In love and touching forever. She and He. He and She. ~ By Midheaven.com.

Muck & The Mires "A Cellarful Of Muck" 2011

Muck and the Mires are an American rock and roll band. Their music is a cross between the 1964 British Invasion and American garage rock of the 1960s.The first tenet of doing garage rock 40 years after the Nuggets era is that your music better sound like a sweaty, rowdy dance party broke out in your basement, with all the sexy somersaults, hip-shaking hell-raising, and ballsy backbeat that a guitar-riffing, R&B-pub rockin’ band can muster. Boston's Muck have done that with aplomb for a decade, like a proud progeny of Barry & the Remains, and they reach their apex, perhaps, with this snortin' set of originals straight outta 1965. Every band working this stripe should hire producer Jim Diamond at Detroit's Ghetto Recorders, as he keeps the takes and sound crisp, rattling, and manic. And with frontman Evan "Muck" Shore (Queers, Voodoo Dolls) and company keeping their side equally rough and ready, there isn't a track that misses. - AllMusic Review by Jack Rabidtrax:

"Jungle Jive" 1999

This disc is a really fun collection of odd songs that you won't find anywhere else. The songs loosely have an "exotic" theme, but they are in a variety of styles. Some of the styles are lounge instrumental, pop vocal, rock and roll, surf, latin and some that are hard to catagorize If you dig retro music like the Capital Utlra Lounge Series, you won't be dissapointed. - Gomez AddamsDEL-FI JUNGLE JIVE is a collection of rare and unreleased tracks by Del-Fi artists. Digitally remastered by Charlie Watts, Bob Sponsler & Elliot Kendall (Mondophonix). An 18-track collection of not-so-great exotica, or exotica-influenced pop/rock, recorded by Del-Fi in the late '50s and early '60s. There are also some songs that could be pegged as mambo, lounge, calypso, or surf; the unifying ingredient is a tossed-off quality in which ethnicity is subjugated by kitschy pop. Not one of these artists has a high profile even by lounge revival standards, although "Bongo Rock" hitmaker Preston Epps is represented by the previously unreleased "Bongo Twist," and Rene Hall (leader of the Rene Hall Orchestra) was a notable arranger who had worked on Ritchie Valens recordings. It's fluffy and frivolous, highlights including the Enchanters' "Native Love," which sounds like a Buddy Holly imitator gone Hawaiian. ~ Richie Unterbergertrax:

The Cheepskates "Run Better Run" '84

The mercurial Cheepskates began life as an anomaly on New York's garage-rock scene: when most of their peers were scouring exurbia for vintage paisleys and vinyl (the more primitive the better, on both counts), this low-key quartet was creating some of the most carefully crafted pure pop to escape from those Seed-y halls. Run Better Run, dominated by Shane Faubert's bouncy (but not overly retro) Farfisa organ and clear, expressive voice, attests to the group's originality. Usually smart, occasionally precious songs like "Gone for Good" and "That's When I Say Goodbye" are reminiscent of the Zombies' art-school pop. Refreshingly cover-free (all four members write; three swap lead vocals), the disc is a timeless pleasure. (Trouser Press)trax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 5

Far out harmonies and psyche pop from the mid-to-late 60s – and another groovy batch of obscurites from the Cali scene and beyond in the Soft Sounds For Gentle People series from Pet Records! The series has only gotten deeper and groovier since the first one came out – many singles from groups that were recording for the major labels at the time, but the majority of whom are fresh discoveries to us – and if labels like Columbia, Warner Bros and Capital provided the opportunity for richer sounds and production, it's used to shoot the grooves even further out, without comprising the catchy grooves and sweetly soaring male and female harmonies. Possibly the best entry yet! 21 tracks in all: Titles include "Take A Bus" by Stix & Stonz, "Nothing Sacred" by The Johnnys, "Look At The Sun" by Mouse, "Hello" by Things To Come, "Kill The Cobra" by Bentley Road, "It's A Groovy World" by The Lollipop Fantasy, "Looking Down" by 1st Century, "Wispy Paisley Skies" by Fraternity Of Man and more.  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The Madd "...Are Pretty Quick" 2009

A real shame and a great pity for all those not curious enough to lend an ear to such new pop bands...Now for a new band few have heard of from Rotterdam, Netherlands called The Madd. They follow in the tradition of European mid 60′s garage-merseybeat revivalist like The Mellowmen, Bronco Bullfrog and The Winnerys. I can’t tell you much about them cause I don’t speak Dutch, however this local reviewer does and you’ll hear all the English you need to know in the review. The opening track, “I Know” is a dead ringer for The EasyBeats and the follow up track “The Days Mind The Time” is a brilliant Beatlesque mid tempo charmer. “Good Evening Girl” is another gem full of catchy riffs, fast tempos and solid harmonies. The band plays really tight, so it doesn’t feel like a simple retro-retread and the first half is damn near perfect. And unlike some European retro bands you won’t hear any Dutch accents. On the albums second half, a little more psychedelic feel is added with Farfisa organs to “I Loved You” and “If You Don’t Come Back” and you’ll hear bits of The Seeds and Strawberry Alarm Clock here. By the albums end, we go the full garage monty along the lines of The Creation or The Pretty Things on “Love” and the theme “We’re Pretty Quick.” But that doesn’t change the fact that each song here is an soothing salve to retro pop enthusiasts like myself. Fans of the above bands and classic power pop simply must get this now. - from: http://www.powerpopaholic.com/trax:

"Jungle Exotica" Vol. 2 - 1999

Puts you in a tropical paradise of dancing kittens, whips, palm trees, margaritas and evil men in corny gorilla suits chasing the kittens!Like your exotica with a little more kick? This compilation of "exotic" rock 'n' roll will satisfy your desire. As I said in my review of Volume One, this not very popular style of rock is very unique. None of the songs on either compilations hit the charts (but, duh, it's Crypt Records), keeping this style underground and regulated to sleazy dives and strip joints. In fact, in addition to an image of Hollywood Tarzan pictures, this conjures pictures of old school strip-club, where the stripper came back with a band not a DJ. It's a great deal of campy fun, and if you are as eccentric as me, you may be dancing to it. They certainly don't make these things like they used to. Honestly, try finding something that sounds like "Harem Orgy" or "Snake Charmer" in today's music. A great collection of zany rock 'n' roll. Hey if this obscure stuff is your cup of tea, pick up both volumes. - By TimothyFarrell22 (Massachusetts)trax:

Utopia "Utopia" 1982

Todd went through many phases, both individually and with Utopia. Here he dons the new wave duds, the two-tone attitude, and shows he can do power pop/new wave as well as anybody who's ever attempted it. Too bad poor promotion and releasing this after the brilliant but obtuse Deface the Music pretty much meant Todd, once again, killed the buzz. As another reviewer mentioned, they limped off with two ok but not great albums, never to have reached the summit that seemed quite attainable after the well-received Adventures...But the three-sided artifact those silly Utopians left is great -- tremendous tight harmonies, crystal clear production and glistening guitar runs, clever lyrics, too-cool melodies -- it's a solid, consistently superior package. It's hard to put this on and not feel the infectious, upbeat, intelligent melodies put you in a better mood - from the clever "Princess of the Universe," to the moody "Bad Little Actress" to the Beatlesque "Chapter and Verse," to the should-have-been hit rock ballad "There Goes My Inspiration." Add to that the hits (for Utopia)"Feet Don't Fail Me Now" and "Hammer in My Heart" and you have an irresistable top notch package. As this will surely go out of print again soon, I recommend this for any serious music collector, and the casual Todd fan as well. (Powerpopoverdose)trax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 4

4th volume of this incredibly researched gray area reissue series, focusing on soft-psych, etc. twenty-three tracks from California and beyond, 1966-1971. As per this label's standard: exceptional attention to detail, with lengthy background notes that piece it all together. Most tracks from obcure non-comped 7" releases, closing in on 40 years ago! ~ Shindig. The sounds are soft, the people are gentle, and the music is as groovy as groovy can be! The CD is the fab fourth entry in one of our favorite series of all time -- and like the rest, it's a tremendous collection of lost pop treasures from the end of the 60s -- all in a magical space between folkies, hippies, and the mainstream -- served up with the best aspects of all three! The style here is totally great -- and offers up a nice contrast to some of the better-known pop of the late 60s -- not in a way that's more experimental or challenging, but just in a way that's even more unboundedly creative! Tracks are extremely well-chosen, with notes on every single number -- and titles include "Geordie" by The Rooney Brothers, "Sunshine World" by The Cosmic Brotherhood, "Little Faces" by The Luv Birds, "Dancing Girl" by The 1st Century, "When I'm Gone" by Lux, "Donnie" by Chuck Barris Syndicate, "Day In The Sun" by The Fragile Lime, "Land Of Make Believe" by The Fourth Dimension, "When The Sun's Gone Down" by Incredible Fog, "Boston Bay" by Smithsonian Institute, and "When Once It Was Good" by First National Band. ~ Record Runner.

The Chesterfield Kings "Psychedelic Sunrise" 2007

"Very few bands match the Kings' mastery of '60s sounds, and this is a prime collection of originals that brilliantly evoke the period, including a couple of songs that you'd swear were Rolling Stones outtakes." --Ken Barnes, USA TODAYLooks to be the band's most recent effort. I've known about the Chesterfield Kings for awhile now. Truly a relief to know there exists bands like this one in the 21st century. One might get the idea these guys started out as a Rolling Stones tribute act because their main influence is heavily and {so obviously} Mick Jagger and crew. About every track here is good, especially "Rise And Fall", "Inside Looking Out", the *ss-kicking fuzz guitar classic "Outtasite", "Yesterday's Sorrows" (reminds me of the New York Dolls) and the rocking "Dawn". Line-up: Greg Prevost-guitar, harmonica, violin, mellotron & lead vocals, Paul Morabito-lead & acoustic guitar & backing vocals, Andy Babiuk-bass, fuzz bass & sitar and Mike Boise-drums, tabla, tambourine and theremin. Overall, just a fun CD to have in you collection. - By Mike Reed

"Jungle Exotica" Vol. 1 - 1997

This one takes the debauchery of Las Vegas Grind into Exotic Asia, the Deserts and the Jungle! Bongos, ape-noises, fake-oriental chants and maracas galore. Truly bizarre and ridiculous attempts at "Exotica" by crazed, obscure, one-shot Rock ´n´Roll (?) combos of the late-'50s/early '60s.Bongos galore, Oriental chants, Jungle madness...
In which the debauched bump'n'grind sounds of LAS VEGAS GRIND venture into the Exotics of the JUNGLE, the ARABIAN DESERTS, and the FAR EAST!
Truly bizarre stuff, YET maintaining the all-out drunken DANCE THUMP!, making "Jungle Exotica" a helluva lot more fun than those over-hyped suburban / whitey Les Baxter / Martin Denny LPs.
Our parents were right... Listening to this type of music did ruin our lives, but I feel ruining ones life is still an accomplishment of sorts. This stuff ruined my life and it may help you ruin yours. Although the title suggests that this is Jungle themed music, it also covers the desert and far east as well. Great blown out 60's trash rock and instrumentals in the style of the Las Vegas Grind series. For the connoisseur of "Anti Prom" music. Exotic cool stuff! - some reviews by ?trax:

"Soft Sounds For Gentle People" Vol. 3

This series of CDs from Pet Records is supposed to be devoted to sunshine pop releases from the second half of the 1960s -- but most of the acts here know a good beat when they find it. Starting with the Mojo Men (billed by this time as Mojo) doing "Candle to Burn," the makers have generally chosen psych-pop sides with a beat. Even the most "produced" side here, "January Girl" by Pipedream (who apparently didn't exist as a group), manages to throw together enough of a rhythm section and effects to make it worthwhile psychedelic rock, even if the song itself sounds like a leftover from a sub-Hair musical. The Fun and Games apparently hailed from Texas, but that didn't stop them from sounding as spaced-out and languidly pretty as their trippy California surroundings on "Close to Carmel." Bryan's mysterious "Learn to Love" actually comes off as closer to psychedelic rock (with a decent beat) than most of the rest here, despite its being the product of a studio ensemble -- Tommy Roe producer Steve Clark evidently knew how to create those sounds on the fly. Leon Russell was one of the prime movers of Le Cirque, along with Marc Benno and Jerry Riopelle of Parade, and for a piece with a fairly conventional brass-loaded accompaniment, it does achieve a colorful effect with its trippy lyrics. The disc gets better as it goes along, the talent of the results (or both) becoming very imposing midway through -- far and away the best cut on this album is "Time Goes Backwards" by Jim & Jean, the folk duo; this psychedelic folk track is a totally unexpected permutation of their sound that lingers long after it's over. The Hung Jury's "Buses" is also pleasant psych pop in a Monkees-like mode, and "Lovin' Day" by the Status Cymbal is a surprisingly garage punk-ish cut to come out of Felton Jarvis' orbit in Nashville. Jacobson & Tansley were a virtually unknown Curt Boettcher project from 1966, whose "Dream With Me" managed to chart in New York and Cleveland, and deserved better. And the Second Helping's mouthful of a title, "Floating Downstream on an Inflatable Rubber Ball" -- which prominently features a pre-Loggins & Messina Kenny Loggins, with sitar and spacey lyrics -- makes for surprisingly pleasant listening. (Bruce Eder, Allmusic)
