Slacktone "Rough Surf, Rough Mix, Live in Berlin" 2005

No way, dude. Wronski's style is pure surf, as his cascading flurries of double-picked cacophony surrounded in glorious reverb and echo will attest. This is a limited edition CD-R in celebration of Slacktone's 10 years together. The disc was produced for their 10th anniversary party. Powerful performances, as we've come to expect, captured raw and alive in Berlin, warts and all. The recording is marred by the stage mic not being turned off in time on several occasions, but the majority of the performances are so hot that it's worth ignoring! -- Phil Dirt - Reverb Central

THE BEAU BRUMMELS "Beau Brummels" 1975

It is a shame that this record was ignored but we must remember that these were the days of "Jive Talkin'", the Eagles and Glamor rock. I sure would like to hear Sal sing again!!!This hard to find album is not only the best Beau Brummel album I've heard, but the folk rock album I've heard. Each of the 10 songs on this, their swansong album, is perfectly written, arranged and performed. Ron Elliot's intricate guitar playing and Sal Valentino's vocals were never better. And those lyrics; amazing! Did anyone, including the Beatles, ever come up with a better line about love than this one from "Down To The Bottom":
"Love is never second guessed; love is never second best. Love's bottom line is saying yes; love's bottom line is bottomless." Reviewer: David S. Hanson "Counselor- Folk Rock aficianado" (Portland, OR)The Beau Brummels:

The Beau Brummels "Autumn Of Their Years"

Debut of Big Beat's Nuggets From The Golden State series bringing the first rays of California sunshine via this 26-track compilation of rare and unissued Autumn era material by the masters of baroque folk pop, The Beau Brummels, an influential but under-rated band that mixed folk, R&B and pop. This CD collection of 26 rarities that the band recorded for the Autumn label contains 10 tracks that were released long after the band's demise and 16 that were never released before at all. The producer of the sessions was none other than Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone). Of all the Bay Area rock groups to come out of California, The Beau Brummels was among the best. Signed by local DJs Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell to their Autumn label, the band had 2 chart hits with Laugh Laugh (Top 10) and Just A Little (Top 5). Between 1964 and the demise of Autumn in 1966, the group toured extensively and appeared on TV and film. The music they cut for Autumn fused British beat sensibilities with the brilliant songwriting of guitarist Ron Elliott and the originality of the material is one of the great strengths of The Beau Brummels recordings. Many of the songs on this CD are demos (but of a superior kind). Some had already been mixed down for single release - Fine With Me is one such song (it was eventually re-recorded for Warner Brothers after the band had left Autumn). The rocker Woman is here with the original Declan Mulligan vocal (as in the teen flick Village Of The Giants) but there are many more rare delights to savor. Extensive sleevenote by Alec Palao of Cream Puff War magazine. (The Guardian)At the time this was issued, before Sundazed put out their 4-disc "Sessions" box, this was by far the best 'Brummels collection around. In some ways, for its conciseness at the very least, it's still the best for some fans. Although it's missing the standard issue solid gold pop hits ("Laugh Laugh" and "Just a Little"), it features interesting alternate demo versions of them, plus a ton of incredible other tracks.
This issue of "Nuggets From the Golden State" is the first of several volumes that mine the wealth of the Autumn Records tape archives. What's been dug up here are 26 stunning Beau Brummels tracks, 16 never before issued, and some available only on an out-of-print Rhino Records comp. Even those tracks previously available on the Rhino "From the Vaults" disc (Rhino RNLP 104) sound much better here - the mastering (from original analog multitrack masters) is amazing, sounding as if a thick layer of gauze has been removed. At least one of the Rhino tracks ("I Grow Old") is featured here with an instrumental break that was, apparently, edited out on the Rhino issue. Another of the Rhino tracks appears here for the first time in true stereo.
If you don't already know the 'Brummels brand of British Invasion influenced pop, this is probably as good as any place to start. As I mentioned, it doesn't carry the standard studio versions of their gig hits - and, true, the demo versions on this disc don't match up with the stellar singles releases - but you can pick those up easily enough. What you get here is a treasure trove of previously unknown pop masterpieces, including some great singer-songwriter demos: Ron Elliot's "Tomorrow is Another Day", the wonderful double- tracked harmonies of "Til the Day", Sal Valentino's folky "Stay With Me Awhile", and Elliot's double-tracked 12-string blues "Coming Home", plus some pleasantly ragged tracks recorded live in the studio by the band.
The liner notes state, "Collections of unissued material quite often scrape the barrel of an artists career, but there is little amongst the substantial number of Brummels tapes in the Autumn vault that is not worthy of the ears of a larger public." This reads as a not-too-thinly-veiled swipe at the Sundazed box, which is too bad, as both the box and this single disc have their audience. The 'Brummels fanatic will want the box, with all its variations. Those enamored of the band's sound, and wanting just a bit more than found on their original studio discs, will enjoy this single-disc collection. (hyperbolium)trax:

Jimmy Castor "Hey Leroy" (Your Mama’s Calling You) '67

An excellent bit of Latin groove – one of our favorite crossover boogaloo sets from the 60s, and easily some of the greatest work ever by Jimmy Castor! And yes, this is the same Jimmy Castor who's known for his funk albums of the 70s – but back in the day, he was open-minded enough to work in genres that included doo wop, harmony soul, and Latin – the last of which he does surprisingly well! The album's got a wonderfully earthy Spanish Harlem groove throughout – heard most famously on the title hit – "Hey Leroy", a fierce romp with a heavy piano groove that's clearly inspired by the work of Joe Cuba – but burning hard throughout on a variety of groovy covers and hard-hitting originals! Lots of piano, searing sax, snapping percussion, and humorous lyrics – and tracks include "Ham Hocks Espagnole", "Our Day Will Come", "Hey Willie", and "Southern Fried Frijoles".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.trax:

LIME SPIDERS "Beethovens Fist" 1990

Released in 1990, the Lime Spiders' Beethoven's Fist album is packed full of loud, melody laced, uncompromising rock n roll. This record stands as one of the most complete rock albums to come out of Australia in recent times and is one that you need to hear. On episode 22 of The Australian Rock Show - Lime Spider bassist Phil Hall joins us and we go over Beethoven's Fist in great detail. Not to be missed! The third album (for those that like this band), has always been hard to get. It really had minimal exposure on release so fans missed it way back when. By now, they may have given up on it - but worry not erstwhile W&W followers - here it is. You probably won't rate it as highly as their previous output, but a band as good as this will still knock you over. - http://mrwiredandwasted.blogspot.de/2015/03/lime-spiders-beethovens-fist.htmltrax:

Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation "Delegation-Time" 1988

There's always that one simple, mindless dance band that hits all the right notes - for me it was Love Delegation. As any devotee of What Wave is aware, in my dictionary the words God and Fleshtones are interchangeable, so any band with even the remotest link to the Fleshtones peaks my interest. So, when I ran across the Love Delegation album 'Spread the Word' quite a number of years ago, featuring main men, Peter Zaremba and Keith Streng I just had to check more closely. Further study revealed names like Bill Milhizer (making 3 'tones in total), Barrence Whitfield (of Savages fame), Wendy Wild (Mad Violets), Kenny Margolis (Lucky 7), Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Pat Dinizio (Smithereens) and so forth. And the music, well just good 'ole happy rock and roll. Dance music as it should be played - no pretension, just a great beat you can boogie to. "I give it a 10, Dick."…...The almost as star studded 'Delegation Time' appeared two years later and continued the party rock tradition. But, since then, nothing. Since we had Peter Zaremba at the mercy of our microphone during the latest Fleshtones appearance in London, we decided to ask about just what was happening in Delegation country.
What Wave: What happened to the Love Delegation?
Peter Zaremba: What happened to the Love Delegation is kinda like what happened to first class sleeper cars on transcontinental trains. It was just too expensive basically. It's just difficult to get that Many people together and play all these instruments and record all that and try to do it for a ridiculously small budget. I lost money on both records. I was happy with the records, I was disappointed that none of then were ever released in North America.
WW: Was the second only released in Spain?
PZ: No, it was issued in France and sold quite a few. And in England too, it got really good reviews surprisingly. It was never released in America in any way. So I was very disappointed about that actually.
WW: Did the band ever play live?
PZ: The band started by playing live. It played live in New York a lot and actually went to France and did a weekend tour - 3 shows in France. We did some great stuff. Played the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and stuff. But, what it really boiled down to was that it was too expensive. After all you can't ask people to do things for free or for $20 or stuff.
WW: Especially some of the names you had on the records.
PZ: They're all really nice people. At any rate though, to tell you the truth, The Fleshtones are now making records again and stuff so there's more than enough to do really. That's the truth. If we had been making records at that point we would never have done the Love Delegation. Who knows, maybe there'll be another record someday. - © 1992 Dave O'Halloran, What Wave #21.The Love Delegation:

"Hip City" Tales From The Funky Side Of Town 1967-1977

During the time of the civil rights movements in America, black artists began seeking a positive identity for themselves through music. Led by artists like James Brown and Curtis Mayfield, an unbridled optimism shined through the music of black Americans. Hip City contains 14 tracks that form a snapshot of this exciting musical period, pinpointing some of the exact records that helped make words like "soul" and "funky" the exquisite territory of black performers. Syl Johnson's shrugs off the chains of authority and makes a claim for black independence on "Right On". James Brown gets up and struts his inimitable funky stuff on "Mashed Potato Popcorn". Andre Williams adopts some slower Blues phrasing to tell the tale of "Cadillac Jack" while S.O.U.L. tell their story to a wildly funky soundtrack and Alvin Cash shows us how to "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" on "Ali Shuffle". From start to finish, Hip City is stuffed with powerful funk gems that ooze quality. --Paul Sullivan, The Soul Detectivetrax:

"Living The Nightlife" Rare Sixties Soul (Kent)

Kent Records has set the standard for various-artists CDs in the U.K., displaying as much care with the packaging as they do compiling the songs, and this compilation features another sterling line-up of soul rarities and classics. Jack Montgomery's excellent "Dearly Beloved," for instance, is worth a fortune on 45, and you'll search long and hard to find a copy of Walter Johnson's obscure "Love Keeps Me Crying." Fred Hughes' "Send My Baby Back" was a mild R&B hit and Maxine Brown's "It's Torture" should have been. Big Maybelle is always magic, and the Shirelles' "Groovy Guy" is one girl group gem that you've probably never heard, featuring some male group sounds too. Living the Nightlife's 24 tracks offer plenty for the ears, and the packanging is easy on the eyes as well. (Andrew Hamilton, Allmusic)

Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation "Spread The Word" 1986/1999

Like a souped-up time machine delivered a house party! The garage rock spirit of Zaremba's band, The Fleshtones, is in full force on this recently-reissued solo album that dates back to '86. Good-time rock'n'roll mixed with a horn section, backup female vocalists, and other studio amenities - you can add all the fixings you want to Peter Zaremba's songs yet they're still raw and overflowing with energy. You can't expect much less than a party from the romping "Hama Lama Bing Bang" or the horn-driven "I'm Gonna Knock You Out." With all the conviction of a Morrison or Jagger, Zaremba's vocals make even the most derivitive tracks transcendent. In the hands of other musicians these songs might sound stale, but the hand-clapping, high-spirited zeal with which this album was recorded is unparalled compared to 99% of the music produced since this release. Could it be that Zaremba was still breathing the punk vigor and idealism that most had lost by the mid '80s? Or maybe he was listening to too much KC & The Sunshine Band. Whatever the influences, Spread the Word is enough to make you shake your booty, defiantly snarl, and all the while feel the love. - by Elliott S.Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation:

The Paladins "Slippin' In" 1999

This album contains authentic rockabilly sounds, real country music, western swing and a surf instrumental tune thrown in for good measure. If you are a Paladins fan that came on board with Ticket Home(later reissued as Rejivinated) you may not dig this cd as much as the rest of us. I think this is one of their best albums to date and it is certainly the best rockabilly they have recorded. - amazonSlippin' In marks a return to the predominantly rockabilly sound of the Paladins' first two albums, strongly recalling the early years of Sun Records, when the line between rock & roll and country could be blurred to varying degrees at any time. There are bits of Western swing and surf music thrown in as well, adding to the group's freewheeling vibe; a fairly consistent set of songs, too, helps make this one of the Paladins' better albums. ~ Steve HueyThe Paladins:

"We're Gonna Change The World!" The 60's Chicago Garage Sound Of Quill Productions

Chicago was a great place to be if you were a member of a rock & roll combo in the mid-'60s -- there were plenty of teen clubs, radio stations were happy to play local product, and several Windy City labels were ready and willing to take hometown acts into the studio and get their music into stores. Dunwich Records and USA Records were the biggest labels in Chicago and both scored a handful of national hits, but they were far from the only game in town, and Peter Wright, a successful record promo man who went on to manage the New Colony Six, ran one of the city's most interesting small labels, Quill Records, which released top-notch sides on a number of fine groups and licensed a few of his masters to larger labels out of town. While Quill only lasted a bit less than two years (from 1966 to 1967), their output was impressive stuff from an eclectic variety of acts, and the great reissue label Sundazed, only a few months after releasing a definitive two-disc overview of the USA Records catalog (2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage and Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records), have unearthed 19 highlights from Quill's archives on We're Gonna Change the World! The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions. Many of Quill's acts followed the trends of the major British acts of the day, but hardly all of them; the Exterminators deliver a screed against long hair and take an "America first" position on rock with the over the top "Declaration of Independence '65," "Hot Pastrami" by the Don Caron Orchestra is a high-powered instrumental dominated by honking saxophones and fuzzy guitars, and "I'm Going to Change the World" by the Commons Ltd. suggests the psychedelic revolution that was lurking around the corner while still maintaining a high degree of sneer and swagger. And even the acts that were looking to the U.K. for inspiration were turning their eyes to unusual places; the Delights were clearly obsessed with the Zombies, so much so that their original tune "Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Moment" mimics their style just as well as their cover of "Just Out of Reach," and the Skunks, who true to their name bleached stripes into their hair, also leaned to the moody side of British pop with "Don't Ask Why" and a fine cover of the Beatles' "It's Only Love" (though "Do the Duck" is a raw and fuzzy celebration of some would-be dance craze). But whether they were embracing an introspective approach or raving up on some tough R&B-influenced sounds, every track on this collection sounds taut, well-crafted, and full of life. Bob Irwin's remastering is excellent, and the liner notes by Jeff Jarema tell the story behind the label and the bands very well indeed; Sundazed has been giving the Chicago garage rock scene plenty of attention as of late, and We're Gonna Change the World! proves the music more than merits the coverage. "Kontroversial Kovers" 32 Original Kinky 60's Mod/Garage/Freakbeat Kovers From The Six Continents Of Planet Daviesland 1965-1969

Kontroversial Kovers Kollekts for the first time in one place, 32 tracks from around the world, recorded during the golden era of garage between the years of 1964-1969. All tracks were written by Ray Davies and released by the Kinks, but here they are recorded by bands who at the time had varying levels of success. These often fuzzed out, sometimes quirky, and always inspired, rarely heard takes on Kinks Klassiks, when put together in this collection, demand a second look and in many cases a first. This record is a Kinks or Garage Konnoiseur’s dream come true. The track list speaks for itself! (Light In The Attic)Here's an underground title that deserves a widespread release - I could only find two mentions of it online at all, one an expired eBay option, and another listing for it at Chicago's excellent Permanent Records.
The concept is simple - why not put together a Nuggets style compilation of Kinks covers? Why not indeed. So here we have 32 tracks recorded between 1965 and 1969, all written by Mr Raymond Douglas Davies, and recorded by 32 different bands of the era with varying degrees of obscurity, but a remarkable level of consistency.
Coming from the time period it does, the earlier raw r&b Kinks tunes dominate with only the odd diversion into "Face to Face" and beyond, especially noteworthy in this field being Mexican band Los Angeles (confusing I know) who tackle Waterloo Sunset in their native tongue, putting a strangely exotic spin on a song as British as buttered crumpets.
It's not all obscurities either - the Human Instinct conquer all with their raucous version of "You Really Got Me" with it's ascending backing vocals souding like a rough blueprint for T.Rex's chart conquering glam rock stomp, and Lemmy's first band of note, the Rockin' Vicker's making an appearance with their final single, "Dandy" - although those expecting a louder than anything else Motorhead style rocker will be setting themselves up for disappointment in that department.
Garage jangle is the dominant sound on display here, with plenty of Yardbirds style rave-ups but there's also room for diversions into exotic psych-pop (Los Cincos' "Most Exclusive Residence For Sale") and most impressive of all perhaps, The Blue Orchids lovely girl-group take on "I've Got That Feeling" (actually released before the Kinks version), an unexpected inversion of the Motown girl group covers strewn amongst the Kinks early recordings.
Lovingly remastered over two slabs of red and blue vinyl, this is a thoroughly entertaining diversion that every Kinks or vintage garage fan NEEDS in their collection. (Nathan Ford, The Active Listener)

"I Was a Teenage Zombie" VA (Original Soundtrack) 1987

Great Silly Movie, GREAT MUSIC!I was in the video store back in the eighties (probably 1987) and I was just a kid mesmorized by the horror video section. Now, parents let me rent horror films just as long as the cover was not gruesome or had a guy with a chainsaw on it. Boy were they fooled. I saw the cover to this movie and instantly it looked like a cool movie. My parents looked at it and saw nothing objectionable about it, so I rented it. I remember the movie itself was silly and childish but what really stood out for me were some of the gore scenes in the movie. When your a 7 year old kid and you see someone getting their face viciously ripped off that kind of thing sticks with you. Now, going into present day, I had one hell of a time finding a copy of this movie but, thanks to Ebay, I found an original copy just as I remembered it. Boy, was this a jem for me. So, I got some beer, sat down and popped it on. I was not disappointed at all. Basically, the story goes like this. A group of teenage friends are looking for some weed to smoke at high school dance. They can't find it anywhere but through a low life called Mussalini (Moose for short). The weed turns out to be really bad and they go to get their money back but off course Moose plays it like a jerk. So the teens kill Moose by accident and through his body into a local river that has been heavily polluted. Needless to say, Moose comes back to life to seek revenge and soon starts killing the teens. Well, the few that are left decide to fight fire with fire and throw one of their dead friends into the same polluted water and hope that he comes back. This is a great low budget film that brings back a lot of memories from the eighties. For gore fans, don't expect anything to vicious but the movie does have its moments, just very low budget moments." - cmrosenthal from United Statestraxfromwax:

"Screaming Gospel Holy Rollers" - Hop, Skip and Jump 1954-1962

As the title implies, this release contains some of the wildest Black Gospel ever recorded, the torrid opening track “I Wanna Be Ready” by The Rev. H.B. Crum And The Mighty Golden Keys pretty much sets the tone for the entire album.  What makes this album very special is that it focuses on the “wild side” of Black Gospel, which is but a stone’s throw from Soul & Rock n Roll at its wildest and best. If you’re looking for silky smooth Gospel this definitely isn’t the album for you!  Featuring record labels including Savoy, Gospel, Peacock, Checker, Sue etc. this beautifully presented Limited Edition (only 500 pressed), 180g, 12” vinyl album includes sleeve notes by Mark Lamarr along with detailed session discography.  The influence of Black Gospel music on Rock n Roll cannot be underestimated and this album clearly demonstrates the cross over between non secular and secular music in the 50s & 60s.  Absolutely essential listening for collectors of Soul, Black Gospel & Rhythm & Blues. - Comprehensive liner notes by Mark Lamarr. "House Rockin' Blues" Chess & Checker Chicago Classics

Compilations of vintage Chess material seem to be plentiful these days, but this excellent collection of strictly uptempo material should not be passed by at any cost. With a healthy 27 tracks aboard, the highlights are numerous with the label's stars and second stringers like Howlin' Wolf, J.B. Lenoir, John Brim, Billy Boy Arnold, Bo Diddley, Willie Mabon, Elmore James and Otis Rush all present and accounted for. But rather than opt for the same tracks that have been around the block time and again, true obscurities like the anonymous Little Luther's "The Twirl," G.L. Crockett's "Look Out Mabel," the previously unissued Robert Nighthawk with Buddy Guy shuffle, "Someday," "Tired of Crying over You" by Morris Pejoe and "He Knows the Rules" by Jimmy McCracklin pepper the mix to keep the collectors happy as well. If the boogie side of the Chess canonade is your particular cup of coffee, this collection is the one you'll keep going back to time and again. Great! (Cub Koda, Allmusic)

The Vampire Beach Babes "Beach Blanket Bedlam" 2004 + "Reckless Summer" EP 2000 + "Attack of the Killer Bikinis" EP 2002

A Curious marriage of Goth, surf-punk, rockabilly leather, PVC and sunscreen... these weirdoes throwin' a beach party that would leave Frankie and Annette buried in the sand... Twisted and comical but not just a shtick, these babes have talent and a sense of humor, making this a perfect way to celebrate summer and still maintain your gothic ennui. - Coreen Woianski - Exclaim!"Combining the best aspects of retro horror kitsch with a dark undercurrent of goth, the Vampire Beach Babes draw on the self-parodying humour used to such advantage by the Cramps and make it their own. Shemale Murphyesque vocals give heft to pleasant-ly inane and sinister tunes....Imagine Sisters of Mercy collaborating with Link Wray and Martin Denny. Now get yourself a margarita and shake that money-maker." - Now Magazine

"N.Y. On Fire" Vol. 1 + 2

A most welcome release featuring a great selection of New York blues, R&B, gospel and doo-wop recorded for Bobby & Danny Robinson's stable of labels in the 50s and 60s. Bobby Robinson, who died earlier this year, was one of the great and important African-American independent record producers who, together with his brother Danny, launched a number of record labels (Fire, Fury, Everlast, Holiday, etc.) and chalked up a number of big R&B hits. A number of reissues of their recordings have been made over the years but these reissues seem to recycle the same 40 or 50 singles. But the brothers made much more great music that hasn't been reissued and this is the first disc in a series to help rectify that situation with about 2/3 of the tracks new to CD. Sure there are a few familiar titles (Charles Walker Slop by Charles Walker, Scratch n' Twist by Wild Jimmy Spruill, etc.) but it's the more obscure titles that will be of most appeal to collectors and most of it is very good indeed including the ferocious hard rocking opener Can't Stop Movin' by Johnny Chef (aka Johnny Acey), Riff Ruffin's reworking of The Hucklebuck as Hucklebuck Scratch with fret melting guitar (Jimmy Spruill? Larrry Dale? Mickey Baker?), two gorgeous gospel sides from The Southwinds, Curtis Carrington's incredibly soulful rendition of the oldie You Are My Sunshine with some great sax work which sounds like King Curtis. Other goodies come courtesy of Helen Bryant, Hal Paige & The Whalers (the intense gospelly blues Don't Have To Cry No More), The Gay Poppers, Harry Lewis & Orch. (the fine two part instrumental Night Stroll), Lee Roy Little (a great rendition of Amos Milburn's Let Me Go Home Whiskey with that rhythm that was to influence ska music in Jamaica) and others. Excellent sound and booklet has introductory notes on Bobby's career to be continued on Volume 2. (FS) (Roots & Rhythm)

The Nomads "Big sound 2000" 1999

This is a prime example of how great "garage punk" doesn't have to be all squealing, posturing, and tuneless thrash. These guys flat out rock with a capital R. This is straight up punk rock with lots of American rock influence. Sure they like the Sonics, but that ain't all they like: MC5, Johnny Thunders, Saints, Ramones, plenty of hard rockin' bands. But remember that these Swedes have been rockin' since the early 80's and became a huge influence on modern garage kings, the Mono Men. Tons of melody, no shortage of attitude, and a thorough grasp of those that came before them (these guys do more covers than any sane band should) make em one helluva band. And while most bands would have become mostly irrelevant at this stage in the game, the Nomads come through with this amazing album, proving that they are FAR from dead. - By punkviperBased in Stockholm, the Nomads have stood out from other garage rock revivalists because of the intensity of their performances and the wide range of their influences, which extend beyond the usual '60s bands to encompass '70s punk, heavy metal, rockabilly, and blues. Their first release was a crude remake of the Sonics' "Psycho"; the band pressed 500 copies of this self-financed single in 1981 but had to discard 50 copies because of defects. They followed this with another single, a blistering rendition of "Night Time" by the Strangeloves, and received wider recognition with their first mini-album, Where the Wolf Bane Blooms. In 1984, they conducted their first European tour and garnered attention in the United States for their Outburst album. Despite successful attempts to broaden their sound, such as using horns on a recording of Jeff Conolly's "She Pays the Rent" and a trashy synthesizer on the Suicide-influenced "My Deadly Game," they have not managed to gain more than a small cult following in the States; this may be because they have recorded only a limited number of original songs. Nonetheless, they have managed to create some genuinely exciting, if not particularly innovative, music. ~ Todd Kristeltrax:

"R&B; Hipshakers" Vol. 3 Just A Little Bit Of The Jumpin' Bean

The third volume in Vampi Soul's Hipshakers series is again compiled by WFMU DJ Mr. Fine Wine and features an array of late-'50s to early-'60s R&B, some jump blues stragglers, and a bit of proto-rock & roll -- punctuated by honking saxes, shouting vocals, and tempos guaranteed to have you doing exactly what the title says. This set features rare tracks from Joe Tex, Little Willie John, the underrated Red Prysock, and many more. Roll back the rugs and grab a partner; this stuff will get you in a dancing mood real quick. (Tim Sendra, Allmusic)Rare soul from the legendary King Records – hand-picked by Mr Fine Wine, with a special ear for sharp-edged R&B grooves! Most of the work here is from the same early soul stretch as James Brown's initial work for King – and recorded with an equally raw sound overall – heavy rhythms, powerful instrumentation, and amazing vocals that really stretch out with a bold sound for the new generation! A few of the cuts here are by familiar names, and others are lesser-knowns from the rich King catalog – all wrapped together in a big batch of tracks that's filled with the kind of rare gems that Fine Wine's know for – both as a collector and a DJ. "Honk! Honk! Honk!" DooTone/Combo Records

This CD is out of print, and sells for a fortune on Amazon UK!All 30 of these tracks from the early- to mid-'50s are illustrative of the Los Angeles R&B/jump blues movement, unified by the honking saxes that were often among the genre's distinguishing features. The material was all cut for the Combo label, except for a few that saw release on Dootone. You get four to seven offerings by four figures who were fairly well known: Joe Houston, Jack McVea, Roy Milton, and Chuck Higgins. Odds and ends by Jake Porter, the Jonesy Combo, Floyd Turnham, Brother Woodman, and Lorenzo Holden fill out the picture. Now, as gritty and earthy as the sound of sax-driven West Coast 1950s R&B might be, a problem with these releases, whether they're of one artist or compilations, is a homogeneity to the grooves. Interestingly, Ace made an effort to let listeners know that this isn't quite more of the same, announcing on the back sleeve that this includes "a dozen or so vocals to enhance the listening experience." There's a bit of calypso in the Jonesy Combo's "Ting Ting Boom Scat" and the occasional mid-tempo number or ballad. Still, you'd have to say this might be too much of a good thing unless the honkin' sax is one of your main bags. That's not to diminish the athletic flights of squeals and honks that are on hand throughout this extensive anthology, which includes one of the prime zeniths of the style, Joe Houston's "All Night Long." Of interest is the insensitively named Chuck Higgins instrumental "Wetback Hop," which got little airplay or sales due to its title. The exuberant party shouts of his "Oh Yeah!," at least, spoke a pretty universally approved language. (Richie Unterberger, Allmusic)

Slacktone "Surf Adventure Tour - Live in Prague" 2002

Their sound is a hyper-kinetic mix of melody, speed and jaw dropping technical skill. This is a live document of Slacktone 's performance in Prague on June 25th, 2001. This release is lovingly dedicated to their bassist Mike Sullivan, who died a short while after returning from the tour. What's most evident on listening to Slacktone now is just how significant Mike's precision bass thunder was to the power of the band. He was always on time, always playing exactly what Dave and Dusty needed to be free to launch their assault. This CD captures the kinetic magic that comes from the synergy of these fine musicians. - Phil DirtSlacktone:

"Twinight's Chicago Soul Heaven" 1967-1972

A dream come true! (especially for us Chicagoans) Kent compiled some of the best soul tracks from the rare Twinight label – home of Syl Johnson, The Notations, Nate Evans, The Dynamic Tints, and other legendary Chicago soul artists. Lots of this stuff has a nice raw west side feel to it, and since most of these tracks were only on singles that even we find hard to find, this CD's one of the major documentations of some of the other soul work that was happening in Chicago away from Chess, Okeh, or some of the other bigger labels. 24 tracks, with the usual great notes and stuff – plus a lot of rare cuts that we'd never heard. Tracks include "A New Day " by the Notations, "Main Squeeze" by Nare Evans, "Don't Wanna Face the Truth" by Radiants, "Maggie" by Johnny Williams, "Life Walked Out" by the Mist, and "Powerful Love" by Chuck and Mac. (Out of print.) (Dusty Groove)

trax:
1. A New Day - The Notations 2. Thank You Baby - Syl Johnson 3. Main Squeeze - Nate Evans 4. Falling In Love - The Dynamic Tints 5. Wayward Dream - Annette Poindexter & Pieces Of Peace 6. LIME SPIDERS "Volatile" 1988

More '60s-style punk from these Australian rockers. Volatile is the second studio album from The Lime Spiders, released in 1988 through Virgin Records on vinyl.
Blood described the US tour: "The States was a bit frustrating 'cos I felt we could have had a good shot at the title there. We did it in comparative luxury 'cos Virgin underwrote the tour. And we had Motörhead's tour bus! Unfortunately we never got back there. We did some shows supporting PiL, and five weeks of our own shows, and there was quite a buzz. There was this place called the Scream Club in LA, this big marble ballroom, and it was early in the tour, second gig or something, and we rocked up to play there and they were lined up around the block and I'm going, 'Are we at the right place?!' that's when I realised"

Esquivel & His Orchestra "Infinity In Sound" Vol 2 - 1961

Esquivel has few peers in originality. His spectacular ideas and concepts come at you full speed in this compilation. Not only did Esquivel provide a road-map for all musicians and engineers into the world of stereo (in its infancy)- he imaged other sounds and textures into his arrangements providing the listener with a truly unique experience. This album showcases Esquivel's unique musical palette as well as some incredible studio talent! Listen to the ingenious "Time On My Hands" - even if you're not a musician...you have to love it! - By RICHARD W WARGIN JR All but two tracks here (and possibly those by now) have been plundered for CD compilations. Infinity in Sound Vol. 2 builds on the strength of the first volume and earier successes. Two tracks feature whistling, one of which is the beautiful, exotic Latin tune "Baia." Other standouts include "Anna (El Negro Zumbon)," "Who's Sorry Now," and "Limehouse Blues." This may be the Esquivel album that has it all: his signature style and sound, some experimentation (whistling), and an even mix of Latin and non-Latin standards. It may be the most representative of Esquivel's U.S. releases, although not the greatest. - AllMusic Review by Tony Wildstrax:
01 Jalousie (Jealousy) 02 Time On My Hands 03 Bye Bye Blues 04 Baía 05 Who's Sorry Now? 06 Anna (El Negro Zumbon) 07 España Cañi 08 Sentimental Journey 09 Cherokee 10 Lullaby Of Birdland 11 La Bamba 12 Limehouse Blues

"R&B; Hipshakers" Vol. 1 Teach Me To Monkey

Excellent New Breed R&B (The Soul Detective)Vampi Soul's R&B Hipshakers, Vol. 1: Teach Me to Monkey is compiled by WFMU DJ Mr. Fine Wine and features an array of late-'50s to early-'60s R&B, some jump blues stragglers, and a bit of proto-rock & roll -- punctuated by honking saxes, shouting vocals, and tempos guaranteed to have you doing exactly what the title says. This set features rare tracks from Hank Ballard, Little Willie John, and many more. Roll back the rugs and grab a partner; this stuff will get you in a dancing mood real quick. (Tim Sendra, Allmusic)
So here we are - R&B Hipshakers - Teach Me To Monkey - Nothing to do with the Hipshakers club in Portsmouth, ,but a new CD released from those Latin Soulsters Vampi Soul. R&B tracks released from the King and Federal Vaults - Most tracks never been released !!
This CD is first rate, it starts with a guitar/organ belter with Willie Wright & His Sparklers and Gibble Gobble, then we get into more familiar territory, Hank Ballard and a groover called Broadway, then the next few tracks already comped by Aces output Lula Reed (which is a fantastic track anyway - check out Aces Tiny Topsy and Lula Reed Cd), Little Willie John - Nerves (similar to Im Shakin). Lloyd Nolan, and the 5 Royales all on Aces CDs (Little Wilie John, Kings New Breed R&B or the 5 Royales Cds - all great tracks).
Little Mummy, is a jumpin track from 1960, then comes the Valentines with Thats It Man, which sounds like an alternative take to John Lee Hooker - This Is Hip backing track, very fast and rockin'.In fact The other tracks are all rockin R&B, Eugene Church, Roy Milton, Freddy King all familiar "King "household names. Then tracks like the Drivers - Mr Astronaut - play this loud and with your windows open so the neighbours can appreciate the quality sounds!! Carol Ford, Bobby Moore, Willie Dixon and Eddi Kirk with his Hog Killin Time closing the CD. Every track on this CD (in my opinion) is fantastic, if you like R&B then this is the CD to purchase, at the price it is cheaper than Ace, however, you dont get the same level of detail over each track/artist etc that you do with the more expensive Ace CDs, in fact you get no detail at all other than some introduction notes of this CD and a possible Vol 2. But the music quality and track selection is first class (even if there are duplicates to Ace releases)
Five stars for this and cant wait for Volume 2. P.s. this CD is compiled by DJ Mr Fine Wine from Downtown Soulville.

The Paladins "Million Mile Club" 1996

Exhilirating from begining to end. No slumps here. Raw energy, plain and simple. This is as close as it gets to actually being at a show. This CD captures much of the essence of a Paladins concert. Captured in different sessions of a tour done a few short years ago, it includes many of their fan favorites. The sound they produce is simply amazing, considering that the band contains only three musicians. David Gonzales, on guitar, is perhaps the leading stage performer in roots or rockabilly guitar playing today. His range and technique are simply amazing. But, rather than simply perform as a virtuoso to show off his talent, he and the band play wondrous tunes that make you want to get on your feet and boogaloo. Being live performances, the recordings on this CD contain sessions on some of the tunes where the band members drift off into fantastic jam sessions, building upon a structure of the tune with layer upon layer of sound and a richness of sound that must be heard to believe. This devoted fan considers the Paladins the best Roots Rock band on the planet. Reviewer: "pmcmeans" (Encinitas, California USA)The Paladins:
Dave Gonzalez: vocals, guitar / Thomas Yearsley: bass / Jeff Donavan: drums

Esquivel & His Orchestra "Infinity In Sound" Vol 1 - 1960

INFINITY IN SOUND VOL. 1 was the first collaboration between the Mexican arranger Esquivel, and producer Neely Plumb and engineer John Norman, in which the lounge music king began to push studio recording techniques to their limits, including extreme stereo separation, you-are-there instrumental effects, and a general sense of anything-goes experimentation. - AllMusic Review by Richard MortifoglioAfter several, probably ill-advised collaborative (or sideman) efforts, Esquivel returns to his full glory on Infinity in Sound. This is the second album — after Exploring New Sounds in Stereo — of the "typical" Esquivel, who pushed the envelope of stereophonic "gee-whiz-ardry." Several tracks are recycled in LP and CD compilations. While "Johnson Rag," "Harlem Nocturne," "Take the 'A' Train," and "Frenesi" are all good examples of Esquivel in his prime, the chief attraction of the album is its consistency and overall integrity. It is a relief that Esquivel is not trying anything stranger than he already is. However, it is not quite his best or most interesting work. - i-tunestrax:
