SAM BAKER "I Believe In You" 1965-1969: The Legendary John Richbourg Sessions (Sound Stage 7)

Sam Baker's voice was one of the most distinctive and expressive of the southern soul genre and his falsetto bursts were simply thrilling. His most consistent period was from 1965-1969 when he was produced by WLAC radio DJ John Richbourg for the Nashville label Sound Stage 7. This album is a complete collection of his historic Sound Stage 7 recordings with informative liner notes by John Ridley. (Soul Detective)A treasure trove of work from this overlooked southern soul singer – recordings that Sam Baker cut down in Nashville for the Sound Stage Seven label – all brought together here in one very comprehensive package! Sam's got a voice that's pitched slightly higher than some of his contemporaries, but with soul that goes equally deep – and the setting here is perfect for his phrasing, with nicely punctuated rhythms that give even the mellower cuts a nice kick up from the bottom! Baker's got a nicely sensitive approach at times – which really makes the set great – a nice mix of sophisticated styles that gets way past overdone southern soul modes. 22 tracks in all – including "What Did Sister Do", "You Can't See The Blood", "Just A Glance Away", "Safe In The Arms Of Love", "I Believe In You", "I'm Number One", "Sunny", "I Can't Stand It", "Coming To Bring You Some Soul", and "Strange Sensation".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.
I BELIEVE IN YOU gathers all of American soul singer Sam Baker's single sides for the cult label Sound Stage 7. Cut between 1965 and 1969 in Memphis by producer John Richbourg, none of these 22 songs were more than regional hits at best, but they have developed a devoted following in the Northern Soul scene in the decades since their release. The set features remastered sound and detailed liner notes by archivist John Ridley. (Allmusic)

"Rockin’ On Acorn-Regent" Vol. 2 (Blues - R&B; - Gospel)

Another great selection - the highlight for me being the originally unissued acapella gospel You Must Bow Down by The Silvertone Singers - this track is alone worth the price of admission. There is more fine gospel from The Moses Gospel Singers, Lincoln Gospel Singers and singer/ guitarist Mary DeLoatch. Mary's secular side (as by Marylyn Scott) is heard on the rocking Beer Bottle Boogie with accompaniment by The Johnny Otis Orch. who are also here backing Mel Walker & Little Esther and Devonia Williams as well as on their classic instrumental Hangover Blues with spectacular guitar work from Pete Lewis. There are a couple of fine cuts from vocal group The Four Barons including the risque Lemon Squeezer and the Korean war song Got To Go Back Again. The set also includes "Fat Man" Robinson, Billye Williams (The Blues Girl), Johnny Crawford Orch., Sirloin Burg, Little JImmy & His Orch. and more. (FS) (Roots & Rhythm)
Don’t forget Vol. 1 of this fine series here:

"Coral Records Rock & Roll Party"

34 track collection of rock 'n' roll recorded for the Coral label from the mid 50s through the early 60s. Many of these tracks have been reissued before but it's nice to have them all together in this thematic compilation. The set opens with the fine Rock, Rock, Rock by Jimmy Cavello & His House Rockers - a fine artist whose career dates back to the 1940s. There are two exceptional tracks from the hot 5 Chavis Brothers with great vocals and hot guitar and Ivan (Jerry Allison) is here with his frequently reissued Real Wild Child with its sublime rock 'n' roll guitar solos from Buddy Holly. Other artists include Don Cornell (pretty bland), Billy Williams, The Dawn Breakers, Dorothy Collins, Moon Mullican, Dick Vale (his Rock-A-Billy Blues is not bad but it's neither rockabilly or blues!), Baker Knight (the fine Just RelaxThat's My Babe recorded just a few months before he hit it big on Liberty with Memphis), The Goofers, Roy Berkeley (a fine cover of Paul Evans' Hushabye Little Guitar or is it the other round?) and others. With 34 tracks there's more than enough good stuff to make this very worthwhile. (FS) (Roots & Rhythm)

Vee-Jay Records presents: "THE BLUES" '61 (Original Album, Remastered Deluxe 2011)

Original 1960 compilation along with bonus disc featuring Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and other classic Vee-Jay artists In the sixties, the legendary Vee-Jay label was the one of the leading independent labels specialising in music for Black Americans.
The label became hugely successful when their long-term relationship with EMI gave them the opportunity to be the first label in the United States to release The Beatles but by this time the label had already built up a formidable catalogue featuring an amazing array of doo-wop, gospel, soul, rock'n'roll and of course blues.
The Blues was a compilation originally released in America in 1960 and contained several of the label's biggest commercial hits of the previous few years.

The Hypstrz "Hypstrization!" 1980

"A high octane Rock n Roll LP that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. This truly is loud, fast, and out of control." - PhiloThe Hypstrz are four floor-stompin' Garage Rock purists who have been wreaking all kinds of frenzied sonic havoc in the basements, ballrooms, bowling alleys and beer halls of Minnesota since the 1970's. Theirs is the primal, animalistic sound of wild-eyed, amphetamine-rushed Rock n' Roll filtered through a heaving behemoth squall of amplified distortion and a festering blitzkrieg torrent of snot and sweat. Its unwashed and unkempt 1960s-style Punk with a swaggering sex-infused twist of Soul, several of the songs being frantically savage covers of Nuggets classics and some being raucously blistering renditions of Wilson Pickett and James Brown standards. What a gritty and impure noise The Hypstrz make! - Moser / Under The Volcano
A damn good disc, with blistering renditions of some well-known and some more obscure songs. If you find the 60s a little slow, strange, dated and just a little too far out, and you lean more for straight ahead garage rock 'n roll, than you will dig The Hypstrz. - 7/11 Brother BucketThe Hypstrz:
Ernest Batson: guitar / Bill Batson: vox / Randy Wiess; bass / John Haga: drums

T-BONE WALKER "You're My Best Poker Hand" The Definitive Collection (1940-1959)

"Nicely presented compilation of prime recordings in a 3CD set...remain potent and hypnotic." - MUSIC WEEK
"If Blues guitar is your bag, it all started here...a must for all Blues guitar fans." - 4/5 RECORD COLLECTOR
"this set is simply the best T-Bone anthology since the old Mosaic box-set and, naturally, comes highly recommended." - REAL BLUES MAGAZINET-Bone Walker was crucial to the formulation of modern blues. Lovers of blues piano might not like that fact, but without T-Bone’s innovatory approach to playing the guitar there would have been no B.B. King, no Buddy Guy, no Freddie King, no Eric Clapton, nor any of the plank-spankers who strut the stage at blues festivals and club gigs. The line began with T-Bone, who along with his friend Charlie Christian invented the vocabulary for the amplified guitar.
Christian died early but T-Bone adapted the improvisatory techniques of the jazzmen he encountered, creating free-flowing phrases whose originality became the inescapable language that blues guitarists had to learn. Throughout the late 1940s, T-Bone cut a sequence of singles for labels like Black & White and Capitol that laid the groundwork for what became the prevailing style of blues recording. With musicians of the calibre of Jack McVea, Teddy Buckner, Bumps Meyers, Lloyd Glenn and Willard McDaniel, he created a supple and subtle repertoire of vocal and instrumental artistry that today’s taste for hyperbole would describe as genius. Heard sixty years after their creation, these records, including ‘Mean Old World’, ‘Call It Stormy Monday’ and ‘T-Bone Shuffle’, still impress for the conviction with which they were played. T-Bone transferred to the Imperial label in 1950 but the music continued in an unbroken line of creative superiority, heard in ‘The Hustle Is On’, ‘Strollin’ With Bone’, ‘I Get So Weary’ and ‘Here In The Dark’.
In 1955 he began recording for Atlantic, who issued two singles, ‘Papa Ain’t Salty’ and ‘Play On Little Girl’, part of a sequence of sessions that included one cut in Chicago with Junior Wells on harmonica. These tracks, including remakes of ‘Mean Old World’ and ‘Stormy Monday’, form a fitting climax to a set that encapsulates the sound and expertise of T-Bone Walker, a master of the blues.

"TEXAS BLUES" Early Blues Masters From The Lone Star State (2004)

Blind Lemon Jefferson was the first bona fide blues performer to be recorded when he sat down in front of a microphone in the spring of 1926, and the very first line of the first song that Jefferson tracked went "well, the blues come to Texas, lopin' like a mule," which is an apt description, since early Texas blues musicians were a varied and stubborn lot, but there was a certain joyful boldness in their playing, and as a group, they rivaled the more celebrated Mississippi Delta blues contingent. This four-disc set from Britain's JSP Records collects what is essentially the complete recorded works of several early Texas (and western Louisiana) blues performers who recorded in the 1920s and 1930s, including Henry Thomas, Pete Harris, Willard "Ramblin'" Thomas, Willie Reed, Oscar "Buddy" Woods, Smith Casey, Coley Jones, George "Little Hat" Jones, Jesse "Babyface" Thomas, and Black Ace (Babe Kyro Lemon Turner aka Lemon Turner). You can hear the strong influence of Blind Lemon Jefferson on several of these musicians, especially Pete Harris and Smith Casey (although Casey's proto-talking blues, "Army Mule in No Man's Land," included here, is as singular as they come), both of whom were recorded by Alan Lomax, but performers like Henry Thomas, who often featured pan pipes and a banjo-derived guitar style known as rapping, are closer to the archaic sound of traveling medicine show minstrels than to the emerging blues style of the time. There is a wealth of tracks here, but a couple of things stick out at first hearing, including the fine slide guitar tone of Ramblin' Thomas; the minor-chord, open-tuning lap slide style of Buddy Woods, who flirts with a kind of early form of Western swing; and the jauntiness of Little Hat Jones, whose songs "Kentucky Blues" and "Bye Bye Baby Blues" are simply a delight. Everything here is available elsewhere from labels like Yazoo and Document, but there is something to be said for having all of these early bluesmen together in one package, and that makes this set well worth seeking out for serious fans of early blues. "CRUISIN’ ROCKABILLY"

Not Now Music's three-disc, 75-track 2014 set Cruisin' Rockabilly is a heavy dose of jumping rockabilly and rock & roll, one that spends as much time on the margins as it does on the big names. And, make no mistake, there are some big names here, beginning with the king of rock & roll himself, Elvis Presley, and running through Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Jack Scott, Charlie Feathers, and Johnny Burnette. There are also cult favorites here -- the Collins Kids, Warren Smith, Sid King & the Five Strings, Billy "Crash" Craddock -- plus a bunch of other cool cats who are known to many, but not all, aficionados. It can be fun to spot trends, such as the rocking septuagenarians of Skeets McDonald's "You Oughta See Grandma Rock" and Mac Curtis' "Grandaddy's Rockin'," and find original versions of songs later popularized by big-name rockers (Vince Taylor's "Brand New Cadillac," which was covered by the Clash on London Calling); it's also cool to hear a country singer like Dave Dudley dabble in rockabilly or discover the occasional song that shares a title with a better-known tune (Don Woody's "Bird Dog," which has nothing to do with the Everly Brothers song of the same name). Chronological order is thrown out the window, and there are some big artists and songs missing, but this never attempts to be a definitive rockabilly set: it's a cruise through the music's '50s heyday and it's plenty fun indeed. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

"DIXIE HIT PARADE"

The Starday subsidiary Dixie issued a series of E.P.s in the 50s featuring some of the big rock 'n' roll and country hits given very close to the originals. The discs were sold cheaply and no artist names were listed, no doubt with the intention of fooling the gullible into thinking they were getting the original versions. I don't know how succesful they were but it was short lived phenomena. This disc features 25 mostly country covers - many of them by artists who were or became famous artists in their own right. Johnny Cash was obviously a big favorite with Leon Payne, Howard Crocket, Benny Barnes and Sleepy LaBeef each doing one or more different Cash songs. Leon Payne shows his versatility by covering Carl Perkins version of Blue Suede Shoes and Elvis's My Baby Left Me. Eddie Noack does Don Gibson's Blue Blue Day, George Jones does Heartbreak Hotel and Melvin Endsley's Singing The Blues and there are a couple of awful versions of Everly Brothers songs by The Half Brothers and there are tracks by Country Johnny Mathis and Jeanette Hicks. Some of these performances are significant in their own right but many are just half hearted copies that have little more than curiosity value. (FS) (Roots & Rhythm)

The Fleshtones "Angry Years 84-86" 1999

"When you become a Fleshtones fan," he said, "It's less about being a fan... it's more of a way of life." (Keith Streng)I'd forgotten about the Fleshtones. Of course, I'd also forgotten a lot of my first couple of years of college, which happen to fall into the above-mentioned Angry Years, so perhaps forgetting the Fleshtones isn't too surprising. Anyway, they're well-remembered by this disc, featuring post-IRS material that's finally getting its first stateside release. What's it like? Well, it's got a fairly shameless ripoff of the Who's "Magic Bus" ("5 New Fleshtones") to start out, followed by an array of brilliant psychedelic-garage-rock songs that mix the sixties a la the Animals, the Doors and others with the budding punk rock abandon of the Ramones. Fool your classic rock friends with the faux-sixties groove "In Need of Love", dig the Pere-Ubu-does-the-Doors sound of "I Need Something", clap along with the Stones-y "Fighting for a Lost Cause" and the tambo-happy "One More Time" or crank up "Return to the Haunted House" and bop along. Oh, and don't miss the vaguely goth psychedelia of "Ra Ra Rene" or the freaked out travelogue of "Endless Tunnel", the disc's closer. This stuff might stand in the shadow of earlier Fleshtones releases, but shouldn't be missed. -- george zahora
