The Mighty Gordinis "Fueled on Fuzz" 2006

Thee Mighty Gordinis are a rawkin' surfin' garage band, formed in Brussels in 1998, by Eric Knoxx (ex-Vice Barons) Their playing style ranges from big beat, garage, surf instro and rock'n'roll, with those typical fuzzed and reverbed guitars and from time to time powered with an organ.Belgium instru surf’n’roll that combines elements of trad. surf and garagerock. Plenty of b-movie soundclips (”Dolemite” etc.) break up the twang, and there’s some tasty bongo drumming going on at times. Adult cocktail music for rock’n’rollers? I like it, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary in the surf genre, like Los Plantronics. - Jenstrax:

JOHNNY SHINES "Standing At The Crossroads" 1970

Linked with the legendary Robert Johnson with whom he played with and traveled with in the 1930s, Johnny Shines left a musical legacy that far outshines the efforts of many acclaimed 'legends' of today. I believe these recordings were the first solo recordings Shines made sfter his mid-sixties return to performance (he recorded with bands for Testmanet and Vanguard) and include marvelous renditions of Johnson's songs witb other material. Johnson was not the only influence on Shines. Howling Wolf was another and there are some touches from such as Lonnie Johnson and Leroy Carr. Shines did not learn the Robert Johnson licks off the record and his mix of Wolf and Johnson in his vocals made him one of the most compelling singers who almost never came across as shrill. This is one of a number of superb albums of his music that are available. (Living Blues)This is one of several albums this artist made in the early '70s that stand as a masterpiece of the acoustic country blues genre. Johnny Shines had begun recording in the mid-'60s, the albums done with electric guitar and full-combo backup, one of them reportedly cut after he hadn't picked up an instrument in years. It was as if he reinvented himself in the following decade, playing pristine and flawless acoustic slide guitar pieces complete with shuffling, stuttering, and stimulatingly complicated tempos. The message was that he had been a young sidekick to Robert Johnson and had absorbed everything, although no deal had been made with the Devil. Shines was a steady, dependable, religious, and forthright chap who lived in Tuscaloosa, AL, and held down a steady job as a construction foreman. Mild-mannered and extremely intellectual, he let loose the reserve of emotion when doing a Delta blues number. The magic and heart were in his fingertips as well as in his voice, which sounds stupendous here. The emergence of the Johnson song canon into his repertoire, done with almost Baroque detail, was also something of a revelation. Some of Shines' earlier albums had featured songs that almost seemed made up on the spot. He was good at that, and was rumored to have played whole sets that were completely improvised when working the country juke joints of his home state, but on this album he showed what he could do when sinking his teeth into a bona fide blues classic. "Kind Hearted Woman" is the musical equivalent of an absolutely perfect chopped-barbecue sandwich with sauce the way they do it in Tuscaloosa, and obviously of much less offense to vegetarians when taken in this form. There were 11 perfect songs chosen by Pete Welding from his set of recording sessions for this project. Once again this great producer has come up with a blues release that is basically a required item for any good collection of this genre. (Eugene Chadbourne, Allmusic)

DAVID "HONEYBOY" EDWARDS "Crawling Kingsnake" 1964-1967

Any fan of Delta blues should grab this reissue as fast they can get to it. These are vintage recordings, mostly from 1967, made by scholar-producer Pete Welding when Edwards was 51 years old. Edwards' itinerant lifestyle resulted in his missing many opportunities to record, so that this was only the fifth session he'd had in over 30 years in music, performing solo, with an acoustic guitar on eight of the 13 cuts here. Edwards cuts a daunting figure on the guitar, making the strings sing in several voices at once (check out the playing on "Love Me Over Slow"), and his singing is a match for his playing. The eight solo numbers, dating from 1967, feature the music he was most familiar with, including Robert Johnson's "Sweet Home Chicago" and the title track of this collection. The rest date from a March 1964 session on which Edwards shares the spotlight with singer-harpist John Lee Henley. As a bonus, the last track is an interview from his 1967 solo session in which Edwards talks about Robert Johnson and Tommy Johnson, both of whom he knew personally. The background ambient sound does nothing to detract from the worth of the music, which has a wonderful raw quality. (Bruce Eder, Allmusic)

The Mighty Gordinis "FOR BOSOMANIACS ONLY" 2002

Second album of Belgium's wildest hot rod surf rock&roll gang, the Mighty Gordinis (ex-Vice Barons), featuring among others their best song yet,'Mustang Driving Woman' with guestvocals of female American blues singer B.J. Scott. Paying homage to such classic surf and garage bands as The Trashmen, Link Wray, The Super Stocks and The Astronauts (quite frankly, any of Gary Usher's heralded '60s projects come to mind), The Mighty Gordinis rev the engine, jam it into first gear and take off to the beach with 10 hip tracks. - interpunkThis is what Rickyboy (a.k.a Eric KNOXX, a.k.a Ricky THUNDERS, a.ka. The man with the white Jaguar ) said about this record : "In 2002, the second LP, «FOR BOSOMANIACS ONLY», kinda visual tribute to RUSS MEYER, was only released on vinyl on DEMOLITION DERBY. Despite such fine tracks as "Mustang driving woman" or "American Revolution" nobody was really happy with this record as far as the sound was concerned. I spent hours and hours in the studio trying to fix the drum sound but is was crappy right from the start and there was no way to set it right". - from Ratboy69 (Link in the sitebar)

LESLEY RIDDLE "Step By Step" 1965-1978 Lesley Riddle Meets the Carter Family - Blues, Country, and Sacred Songs

These recordings, made between 1965 and 1978, make available for “ the first time the music of the remarkable black guitarist and “ singer Lesley Riddle, whose repertoire ranged across much of the “ African-American musical tradition. He directly influenced the “ development of white country music through his friendship with “ the Carter Family, to whom he gave many songs, among them “The “ Cannon Ball.” (Rounder)Step by Step: Lesley Riddle Meets the Carter Family: Blues, Country and Sacred Songs contains several field recordings Mike Seeger made of guitarist/vocalist Lesley Riddle between 1965 and 1978. The music on the disc not only showcases Riddle's considerable talent, it also demonstrates that there wasn't much of a gap between blues, folk, country and mountain music. (Allmusic)
Speaking of the Carter Family (and why wouldn't we be?), here is a lovely disc that a pal of theirs, guitarist/folklorist Lesley Riddle, made during the waning days of the '60s folk revival. Riddle was a local African-American performer and folklorist who shared (and sought out) many of the songs A.P. Carter added to the group's early repertoire in the 1930s when their career was at its zenith. You could almost say he was to the Carter Family what George Martin was to the Beatles, acting as a musical mentor to both A.P. and Sara Carter. This disc shows that Riddle shared their gift for delicate lyrical expression, and emotional resonance. (No Depression)

PETE MOLINARI "Walking Off The Map" 2006

Repressing of the 2006 debut release by this artist, recorded live in producer Billy Childish's kitchen! Pete Molinari is a Folk/Blues singer/songwriter of Egyptian/Maltese parentage, raised in Chatham, England, where he was discovered by Childish. He's been playing solo for a few years, and has become a fixture in his hometown, and various London acoustic clubs. During an 18 month stint in America, he honed his unique vocal style playing the bars and cafes of New York's Greenwich Village like the Bitter End, the Gaslight, Cafe Wah and Caf‚ De L'Artists. It is refreshing to come across such a pure and special artist as Pete Molinari. Damaged Goods.

"Rock 'n' Roll versus Rhythm and Blues-16 Hits" (Compiled By The Hound) CD Version

I compiled the R&R vs R&B album so here's a few answers to your questions:
a) Johnny's House Party was originally done by Johnny Heartsman on Music City, the version on R&R vs R&B is a cover on Aladdin.
b) Pine Top by Johnny Jenkins & the Pine Toppers (the flipside of Love Twist) was recorded at the same session as Otis Redding's Pain In My Heart.
c) Googie Rene's Sidetrack was on Class, Googie plays organ, Rene Hall is on guitar.
BTW- R&R vs. R&B was the third Valmor LP, the first two were Jook Block Busters vol. 1 and vol. 2, 500 copies of each were pressed on vinyl in 1985. All subsequent pressings and CD versions are re-bootlegs, mostly pressed by a certain Pittsburgh based garage label and distributor. (The Hound)The simple but effective concept behind this top-notch comp is to show that the difference between rock & roll and rhythm & blues from the 1950s and early 1960s was primarily racial and not musical. Consisting pretty much entirely of instrumentals, Rock 'n' Roll Versus Rhythm and Blues is a two-sided non-stop party platter.
First, the R&B side. Ike Turner, the most well-known of the musicians to appear on this collection, gets things off to a great start with the scorching "Double Mint," and is followed by Mickey Baker's tough guitar blues, "Shake Walkin'." My reaction to "Johnnie's House Party Part 1" is: Why couldn't Earl Palmer & the Partytimers have played at some of the house parties I went to? They would have been better parties, that's for sure. I'm not sure I want to know what "Groove Juice" is, but Pete Lewis definitely makes it sound good. Further evidence that Johnny Otis could find (and father) damn good guitarists for his bands. While Rene Hall and Johnny Jenkins get the billing as the featured instrumentalists on "Sidetracked" and "Pinetop" respectively, the unnamed sax players on each are just as impressive. The rollicking "Hot Potato" showcases Guitar Red's chops backed by a steady horn section. The wonderfully-named "Watusi Freeze" by Big Walter & the Thunderbirds is the real weird one in this bunch with its evil hoodoo-sounding roller rink organ, jack rabbit rhythms, and insane chanting and howling.
Now, for the rock & roll. I don't know if it's Bob or Jerry, but presumably one of them is the guitarist who coaxes those futuristic sounds from his instrument on "Ghost Satellite." Virtues' "Tel-Star Guitar" lopes along pleasantly enough, while the intense but too-short "Dicla" (?) by Doug Fowles & the Air-Dales sounds like something that could have appeared on an LP in the excellent Stompin' series. "Hill Stomp" by Strangers and "Jupiter C" by Pat & the Satellites pack a powerful one-two punch as what are arguably the best tracks on this comp. Ward Darby & the Raves (and, of course, don't forget the vocal chant by The Tribesmen) perform another "jungle music" novelty number (similar in spirit to "Watusi Freeze") called "Safari" which at times almost sounds proto-rock steady. Raymark's "Back Fire" is more guitar-driven instrumental goodness, and the subtitle ("Answer to Rumble") of Norb Kabin's "Nite Rider" tells you all you need to know about this particular number.
I wish I could tell you some biographical details about the musicians (you all know Ike Turner's story), but liner notes are unfortunately non-existent on this one, folks. Enjoy it anyway. (Record Fiend)

The Mighty Gordinis "Burnout in Vegas" - EP 1999 + "LES GORDINIS CHERCHENT L'AMOUR" - EP 2004

Gasoline-drenched surf'n roll from Belgium. The Mighty Gordinis are the successors of the legendary Vice Barons.
"these Belgians got a lot of mighty might, apart from knowing surf standards inside out, they do know how to rock and to roll. Get this nicely designed EP and dig smashers like 'Shake My Iguana' or 'Thunderbird Stomp'!" (OX #38)
"3 Instrumentals, very remindful of the Vice Barons, where their guitarist Ricky played before, and 2 vocal pieces of the finest. Cool frat rock'n roll sound spiced by a Farfisa organ and a total party smash. Ten points!" (RIVERSIDE JUNIOR #4)trax "Burnout in Vegas":

"RARE FIFTIES BOSTON ROCKABILLY" Vol. 2

A ton of rare rock'n'roll (not as much straight rockabilly as the title would let you believe). The set starts out great by legends from my VERY old hometown of Danvers MA, Bobby Mansfield & the Dusters doing "Rock At The Hop". There's lots of raw covers including Steve Colt & The Del-Mingos - "The Girl Can't Help It/ Hop Skip & Jump", Paul chaplain - "Shortnin' Bread", The Chisholm Bros - "Honey Don't", & lots of derivative but flat out rockers by The Belvederes (including a drivin' version of "Rumble", called "Rumble Rock"), The 3 D's. Bob Silva & the Silva-Tone The Jupitors, plenty more, including a lot of never before issued material. "Wee Wilie Wiggle/ She's Not Home/ Crazy Little Woman/ Washed Up", etc. (GM) (Roots & Rhythm)

"Ballroom Bash" Vol. 5

Once again we present you with this year's BALLROOM BASH's complementing CD - a short summary of the fifth label-festival, which was held in Cologne for the very first time. You'll be listening to a selection of four songs by each of the six bands that were performing, some of which are yet unreleased! The lowpriced CD is a great compilation of a fantastic festival lineup (Janey & the Ravemen, Wild Evel & the Trashbones, Les Playboys, Ray Daytona & the GooGooBombos, The Moonstones and Kommando Beat) as well as an insight into the wild 60's Garagepunk/Merseybeat/R&B/Hammondsound/R'n'R - sound that SOUNDFLAT RECORDS has been releasing for almost ten years now. Finally it makes a perfect souvenir for the Ballroom Basher to be reminded of that raving weekend!

MERRILEE RUSH "Angel Of The Morning" The Complete Bell Recordings 1968-1970

Although a classically trained pianist, Merrilee Rush's greatest exposure came in the form of 1968's Angel of the Morning. Previously, she had been in several American Northwest R&B combos in the early to mid-'60s -- including the Aztecs, Merrilee & Her Men, and a stint with Tiny Tony & the Statics. By 1965, Rush settled into her own band, Merrilee & the Turnabouts, which quickly became local teen dancehall favorites. Their success garnered them a spot supporting Paul Revere & the Raiders during their 1967 tour, resulting in head Raider Mark Lindsay introducing Rush to Memphis-based producer Chips Moman. While the Turnabouts are credited on the original album jacket, Moman replaced Rush's backing band with a handpicked coterie of seasoned studio veterans, ultimately yielding this dozen-song long-player. The effort consists mostly of lightweight pop with slight country & western and folk-rock nuances, although there are few tunes that stand as powerfully as the affective Chip Taylor-inked "Angel of the Morning." Rush's uniformly strong leads recall the effervescence of Melanie -- thankfully without the annoying warble -- and the honey-toned Jackie DeShannon. The laid-back opener, "It's Worth It All," sets the pace with an affable but insipid delivery. The moodier "Sandcastles" -- one of two cuts co-written by Moman with Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn -- is a step in the right direction, especially when the tempo picks up and Rush is given a chance to express herself. The optimistic "Billy Sunshine" and the cover of Joe South's "Hush" follow that edgier path. Conversely, the Mark Lindsay composition "Do Unto Others" and the subsequent Moman/Oldham/Penn side "Handy" are little more than ponderous filler. [The 2006 CD reissue from Rev-Ola supplements the contents with an additional nine non-LP selections, notably Rush's reading of "What the World Needs Now" from the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) as well as a trippy remake of the Motown staple "Reach Out" -- supposedly inspired by the Vanilla Fudge's overhaul of "You Keep Me Hanging On."] (Lindsay Planer, Allmusic)Like so many one-hit wonders, Merrilee Rush had a deeper music career than could be surmised from her brief intersection with popular taste. Though she had only one major chart hit and two albums (this one and a self-titled release in 1977), she's continued her involvement with music to this day with tour spots and regular gigs in her native Pacific Northwest.
In contrast to studio-manufactured artists who hurry an album to milk a freak hit single, Rush was a bona fide musician who'd spent time in a number of bands before finding chart success. Her good fortune to cross paths with Chip Taylor's enduring composition, "Angel of the Morning," gave her the chance to record an entire album for Bell Records, reproduced here with nine bonus tracks.
There's nothing here that matches the ephemeral radio-readiness of "Angel of the Morning," but there are plenty of songs that capture the same Summer of '68 vibe. There's still a helping of the previous summer's glowing optimism, but freckled by the blanched heart of growing social turmoil. Highlights include a waifish cover of "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)," the dramatic Poppy Family styled lost-love of "Sandcastles," and the quiet isolation of Chip Taylor's "Working Girl." The arrangements are sophisticated, with production by Chips Moman that deftly mixes rock, pop, country and folk.
This deluxe CD augments the original album with bonuses that include "Reap What You Sew" (the original B-side of "Angel of the Morning"), a towering Vanilla Fudge like cover of The Four Tops "Reach Out" (and its country-inflected flip, "Love Street"), and follow-on singles "Everyday Livin' Lives," "Sign on for the Good Times" and "Angel on My Shoulder," as well as their B-sides. Closing the disc is Rush's final recording for the Bell label, a Quincy Jones produced cover of "What the World Needs Now" that was featured on the soundtrack album for "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" in place of Jackie DeShannon's version.
If you love the hit single, you'll be overjoyed to find this album's worth of similarly toned material that holds to the same level of imagination and quality. (hyperbolium)

This compilation consists of tracks that nearly hit the charts but just failed to do so, one could be forgiven for assuming that such a collection would consist entirely of second-rate material. BIG MAYBELLE "Blues, Candy & Big Maybelle" (Savoy 1956-1958)

Two vinyl albums of Maybelle's Savoy recordings on one compact disc makes for a nice 28-track retrospective of her prime work. First up is the album originally issued as Blues, Candy and Big Maybelle, a chunk of session work from 1956-1957, with a three-song date from 1959 to round things up. Her takes on "Rockhouse," "Ramblin' Blues," and the title track are the big tickets here. The second anthology, titled simply Big Maybelle, features her recordings from 1956-1959, with the balance of it leaning toward her later output for the label. A 1957 session with Kenny Burrell on guitar yields interesting stabs at "White Christmas" and "Silent Night," while a 1959 session finds her big voice framed with a string section on a great read of "Until the Real Thing Comes Along." A very underrated singer, Big Maybelle is a total delight and deserves a much wider hearing. (Cub Koda, Allmusic)

THE FLIES "Complete Collection 1965-1968"

Although the Flies are primarily remembered for their punkish rendition of "(I'm Not) Your Steppin' Stone" -- covered from Paul Revere & the Raiders' version -- the vast majority of the U.K. quartet's other material is much more pop-oriented and less aggressive. Complete Collection: 1965-1968 (2002) features 22 tracks from the virtually unknown Brit rockers. The East London band had evolved from The Rebs to the In-Sect and issued a long-player under the latter moniker in 1965. The following year saw two more name changes (the Decadent Streak and No Flies on Us BUT...) and a few personnel adjustments before being signed by Decca Records based upon their double-sided demo disc of "(I'm Not) Your Steppin' Stone" b/w "Just Won't Do." (Incidentally, both demos are included on this collection.) The label convinced the band to shorten their name to simply the Flies and, in October 1966, re-recorded "Steppin' Stone" as well as the mid-tempo love song "Talk to Me" for the respective A and B sides of their debut single. With a great industry buzz beginning to surround the Flies, they were picked up as a live support act, doing gigs with the Who, the Moody Blues, the Move, and Traffic; they even opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in February 1967 at the Roundhouse in London. The follow-up 45 also included two strong cuts. The backbeat heavy rocker "House of Love" as well as the lightweight take on the pop standard "It Had to Be You" -- which made the band sound more like Sopwith Camel or the New Vaudeville Band than the acid-laced garage rockers associated with their earlier sides. the Flies eventually landed as the core lineup began to splinter by the end of 1967. John Hunt (drums/vocals) issued a solo single under the guise of Alexander Bell -- which featured a session guitarist named Jimmy Page. Their "theme" (if you will), "Alexander Bell Believes," is an odd bit of Baroque pseudo-peacenik psychedelia, with a decidedly Kinks-influenced mod sound. In addition to the previously mentioned platters, this CD also includes a few pre-Flies pieces, such as the In-Sect covers of Chuck Berry's "Reelin' & Rockin'," the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," and a demo of the Kinks' "Tired of Waiting for You," among others. (Lindsay Planer, Allmusic)

"THE MODERN RECORDS STORY"

Before Rock and Roll became an Industry mostly driven by major labels, independent companies like Atlantic, Specialty, Vee Jay, Sun, and Modern broke ground for the new youth-oriented mass market. They recorded in living rooms, in store fronts. They got a perfectly *imperfect* sound which remains transcendant to this day. I doubt the Bihari Brothers or any of their contemporaries cared if their discs were called R & B or R & R when their discs made some noise - without heavy distribution! This excellent assemblage covers mostly '47 to '56 and features the true pioneers like Ike Turner (pre-Tina and with Tina), Pee Wee Crayton (with the fast "Texas Hop", a sound from '48 that Charles Edward Berry must have dug at some point prior to '55), Young Jesse (with a non-charting classic called "Mary Lou"), a few from Elmore James, and many, many more. The notes are exceptionally fine. The pressing is headphone-friendly, to say the least. (R&B Review)The Modern label was one of the top R&B indies of the late '40s and '50s, continuing to release some soul, blues, and rock of note throughout the '60s as well. This 28-song anthology serves as a sampler and Ace promo of sorts, since the Ace label reissues many Modern products. On its own terms, though, it's a good collection of 1947-1967 R&B-based music. Jump blues, raw blues, early rock, doo wop, and early soul are all heard over the course of the disc, with enough commonality in approach to make it a well-flowing listen. About half of these tunes were big R&B hits, sometimes crossing over to the pop charts as well, including classics like Lowell Fulson's "Tramp," Ike & Tina Turner's "I Can't Believe What You Say," the Cadets' "Stranded in the Jungle," Jesse Belvin's "Goodnight My Love," Marvin & Johnny's "Cherry Pie" (covered for a hit by Skip & Flip years later), John Lee Hooker's "In the Mood," and the Teen Queens' "Eddie My Love." The non-charters are important, too, however, as heard in entries such as Elmore James' "Dust My Blues," Young Jessie's "Mary Lou" (later covered by white rockers like Ronnie Hawkins), B.B. King's "Three O'Clock Blues," and Joe Houston's classic, rocking sax instrumental "All Night Long." It's a better compilation than most that focus on R&B of this era, due both to the high level of the material and the pretty varied approaches within the R&B umbrella. THE DOVELLS "Cameo Parkway 61-65" The Best Of The Dovells

The Dovells are known for their two early-'60s rock & roll classics "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down." The 2005 collection The Best of the Dovells 1961-1965 includes these two gems plus plenty more hot rockers that will have you out of your seat and stomping your feet. The Dovells' strong points are their unflagging energy and the yelping teenage vocals of Len Barry, and a typical song is made up of pounding drums, a honking sax, and lyrics about a new dance craze or a teenage hottie that Barry hollers and howls about while the band harmonizes raucously in the background. Add handclaps, foot stomps, and crowd noise and what you have for most of the disc is an instant party. While the two hits are the best by far, the rest, like "Mope-Itty Mope," "Hey Beautiful," "Betty in Bermudas," "Kissin' in the Kitchen," and "Foot Stompin'," are a blast of carefree fun that never grows old. This is the first legit Dovells collection to be released on CD and it should thrill fans of early-'60s rock & roll. The only problem with the collection is that it doesn't include any of the three post-Barry (who left in late 1963) singles on Parkway, which is a pity since they included some good tunes like the Four Seasons knockoff "What in the World's Come Over You" and the hot rod rocker "Dragster on the Prowl." Instead there are four solo Barry tracks, including his big hit, the blue-eyed soul classic "1-2-3," and a great big city soul ballad, "Hearts Are Trump," but not his excellent "Like a Baby." While it would have been nice to bill the disc as Best of the Dovells and Len Barry, it's an issue that will likely only bother trainspotters. Everyone else can just roll back the rugs and do some serious foot-stompin'. (Lindsay Planer, Allmusic)

"Uptight Tonight" The Ultimate 60s Garage Collection

From these bands came the Stooges, The White Stripes, The Ramones and virtually all of the best 70's punk. The focus is on tight tunes, great songs, sung with venom and bite. Broken love, going out, drinking and generally causing mayhem is where we're at here and the effect is first rate. - By Mr. M. L. HawesThis 26-track assemblage of vintage '60s garage band singles may not actually be the ultimate garage rock collection (the Nuggets box set probably has that distinction locked up), but Uptight Tonight: Ultimate 60's Garage Collection rips out the attitude and trash riffs pretty darn well, making it perhaps the ultimate single-disc set of this raggedly endearing (and enduring) rock style. There are some well-known garage classics here, like Count Five's genre-defining "Psychotic Reaction," Music Machine's ultra-assertive "Talk Talk," and the Seeds leave-me-be anthem "Pushin' Too Hard," but there are also some less well-known sides like the Sonics' Kinks-on-steroids monster "He's Waitin'," the Wailers' "Hang Up" fuzzfest, and Dean Carter's unhinged and manic version of "Jailhouse Rock." Serious garage band record collectors will already have most of these tracks, but listeners looking for a single-disc compilation to check out what all the fuss is about, or folks looking for a good purchase to supplement the Nuggets box, Uptight Tonight will be darn near perfect. Either way, it hits the nerves like an ice pick full of adrenaline. - Review by Steve Leggett

BOBBY BARE "The Best Of Bobby Bare" 1959-1969

Bobby Bare was a restless artist, pushing country music forward in the '60s by incorporating elements of folk and rock in equal measures on his recordings for RCA. His music could have an epic narrative sweep, or it could be intimate in its telling details. He could be a warm, sensitive singer and he also could be tougher than many other vocalists in the heyday of countrypolitan -- and he also could be wickedly funny when given half a chance. He was a fine songwriter and an even better judge of material, championing songwriters like Tom T. Hall, Tompall Glaser, and Waylon Jennings before they became country legends, finding songs from folkies like Ian Tyson, while also cherry-picking great tunes from Nashville stalwarts like Hank Cochran, Lee Hazlewood, and Jack Clement. This resulted in one of the richest bodies of work in the '60s (not to mention his '70s and early-'80s highlights), but its diversity and unpredictability meant that he wasn't always at the top of the charts -- instead, he continued to chart, occasionally finding the right tune to bring him back to the Top Ten. Nevertheless, his music stands as some of the finest of its time, and while Bear Family's comprehensive box set All-American Boy explores these '60s RCA recordings in thorough detail, Razor & Tie's 21-track The Best of Bobby Bare is the best summary of this time, functioning not only as a superb introduction, but as a great, compulsively listenable collection of highlights. This does not have all of his '60s hits -- singles like "Shame on Me" and "It's Alright" are left behind -- but it does have all the big tunes, along with a good cross-section of album tracks and B-sides that illustrate the range of his music. There's his first single, the Elvis send-up "The All-American Boy"; there's the heartbreaking lament "Detroit City," which proved he was no novelty; there's "500 Miles Away From Home" and "Miller's Cave"; one of the first versions of "Long Black Limousine"; excellent versions of Waylon Jennings' "Just to Satisfy You" and the Glaser Brothers' "The Streets of Baltimore"; a taboo-breaking tale of infidelity in Tom T. Hall's "(Margie's At) The Lincoln Park Inn." These are the major moments, but they certainly aren't the only highlights on this essential collection. Bare released music as good as this, but he never bettered it, and everything on The Best of Bobby Bare stands among the very best and most adventurous country of the '60s. MOE BANDY "Honky Tonk Amnesia" 1973-1983

"Well, it really tears me up when I hear a hurtin' song," sings Moe Bandy, "and I'm someone who likes a good cold beer." And there you have it: Moe Bandy in a nutshell. That line, from the quintessential Bandy song "Soft Lights and Hard Country Music," sums up his aesthetic quite nicely, but what it doesn't tell you is that Bandy seemed to be the only country singer who had that aesthetic in the 1970s.The Mississippi-born Bandy was raised in Texas and on the music of fellow Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers, honky-tonk master Hank Williams, and eventually his idol George Jones--hear how Bandy pronounces "woman" in "I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today" for proof of his reverence for Possum. Despite the country-pop trends of the day, he saw no reason to ever stray far from the hardcore honky-tonk that's as natural in Texas as cowboy hats. (Marc Greilsamer, Honky Tonk Review) If the 1970's would have embraced the sounds of Moe Bandy more than those of Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, and Kenny Rogers, it would have been a whole different ballgame. The music on this album will remind you of what true country music is all about; I do believe the choice of the album title is appropriate as this is one of those albums that mix well with beer or bourbon (or both). Moe Bandy was definitely a stylist who was obviously influenced by George Jones and Hank Williams, but you soon realize that Moe had a style all of his own. It's often overlooked that Moe also had a few notable duets including with Becky Hobbs and Judy Bailey, but his duet with the fabulous Janie Fricke in "It's a Cheatin Situation" will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. I don’t think there's a bad song on the album, which is saying something for a 20 track disc. He carried the torch of traditional country in the 70's. A+ (Roots & Rhythm)trax:

RED SIMPSON "The Best Of Red Simpson"

Truck-drivin' songs hold a narrow but proud niche in the mythology of country & western music. Red Simpson, a Bakersfield songwriting compadre of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, came into the game late, following the success of Dave Dudley and Del Reeves, and scored but one bona fide hit, 1971's dryly comic "I'm a Truck." But Simpson's work has held up better than most, thanks to his blue-collar voice and those twangin' Bakersfield Telecasters. This 20-track collection is taken from Simpson's mid-'60s and early '70s Capitol albums. Besides "I'm a Truck," highlights include the original version of "Highway Patrol" (memorably covered by Junior Brown on 1993's Guit with It) and a chugging version of "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves." --Rick Mitchelltrax:
