LEE FIELDS "Let's Get a Groove On" (1999)

Lee Fields spent most of the '90s on the Ace label, recording soul-blues albums whose funkiness was often dampened by cheap-sounding, partly synthesized backing tracks. Judging by his performance on his Desco Records debut full-length Let's Get a Groove On, Fields' move to the pioneering old-school funk-revival label freed him to do the kind of gritty, authentic funk album he'd been itching to record for quite some time. Laying out his principle of "rough...nasty...genuine" funk in a spoken intro, Fields positively smokes through the whole record, capturing all the fire of late-'60s James Brown (whom he strongly and unashamedly resembles, vocally) with the help of the Desco house band, the Soul Providers, who lay down a richly organic set of guitar-and-organ-dominated funk backings. Let's Get a Groove On is blatantly derivative of its influences, but the simple act of returning wholeheartedly to those influences -- in a musical climate which has assimilated and moved away from them -- could in itself be considered an innovation. Regardless, it's a stunning performance from Fields and the record that fulfills Desco's promise -- quite possibly one of 1999's best, and definitely one of its most overlooked. Garland Jeffreys "Grinder's Switch" (1970)

Hi Everybody, this LP is a 1981 reissue of the 1970 Vanguard original album, and it's often presented as "Grinder's Switch featuring Garland Jeffreys".Enjoy that vinyl rip!!! - Magic Kaic's MusicNew York singer/songwriter Garland Jeffreys made his disc debut as the leader of the band Grinder's Switch on Vanguard Records in 1970. By the evidence of its ten Jeffreys-composed songs, he and the group had spent a lot of time listening to the Band's Music from Big Pink and the batch of songs Bob Dylan had developed with the Band in the late '60s, including "The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo)." Jeffreys, Ernest Corallo, and Stan Szelest approximated the Band's rough vocal trio of Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel, and the country-rock musical arrangements, with their prominent organ and piano work by Szelest, also strongly recalled the sound of the Band. (Szelest actually joined a later lineup of the Band, appearing on their 1993 album, Jericho.) Jeffreys had some clever and amusing things to say in his lyrics, marking him as the singer/songwriter he would develop into later. But upon release, Garland Jeffreys and Grinder's Switch was so much of a clone of the Band that it was hard to separate it out as the work of an independent entity. - Review by William Ruhlmann (AllMusic.com)trax:

JOHN SEBASTIAN "Faithful Virtue" The Reprise Recordings (1970's)

Rhino Handmade only issued 3,000 copies of this 3-CD box set. [I have No. 495--and all 3,000 have been sold, so your only option is to buy a copy from a second-party vendor.] While Collectors' Choice Music has recently re-released the five albums contained here (JOHN B. SEBASTIAN, REAL LIVE, THE FOUR OF US, TARZANA KID and WELCOME BACK), hardcore fans will want this 2001 release for several reasons:
-the 48-page booklet is filled with photos, a recent interview and reminiscences of each album and many of the individual tracks, original album art and liner notes, and a track-by-track listing of all the musician who performed on each song.
-The remastering is terrific. These songs have never sounded better.
-As a bonus, disc-3 includes Sebastian's entire Woodstock performance. So you not only get "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" and "I Had a Dream" (which were included on the original Woodstock soundtrack), but you also get "How Have You Been" (from his--at the time--yet unreleased solo debut) and "Darlin' Be Home Soon" and "Younger Generation."
-An additional bonus on disc-3 is six previously unreleased songs recorded in mono from an October 4, 1969, performance at Winterland in San Francisco. These live solo recordings include "Sitting on Top of the World," "Magical Connection," "You're a Big Boy Now," "I Found a Dream" (written by blues musician Lonnie Johnson, NOT the similarly titled "I Had a Dream," which Sebastian wrote for his solo debut), "Daydream" and "Younger Girl." All six of these are terrific performances--especially the bluegrass standard "Sittin' on Top of the World," where Sebastian does some fancy picking--a song he says he learned from Doc Watson. (Amazon) (This collection is out of print and sells for well over $100 and up)This set is the final word on the '70s solo recordings of singer/songwriter John Sebastian. Compiled over three discs are all five of his LPs for the Reprise label: John B. Sebastian, Cheapo-Cheapo Productions Presents Real Live John Sebastian, The Four of Us, Tarzana Kid, and Welcome Back. Additionally, there is an extra half-hour of live material, most of which is issued here for the first time. As he had done with the Lovin' Spoonful, Sebastian's emotive and thought-provoking lyrics prove to be his strongest suit. "How Have You Been," "I Had a Dream," and "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" best reflect the continuation of the introspective musical and lyrical themes that he had first explored on tracks such as "Younger Generation" and "Darlin' Be Home Soon." However, the album was far from being acoustic and weepy. "Red-Eye Express," "What She Thinks About," and "Baby, Don't Ya Get Crazy" are up-tempo rockers featuring the likes of Dallas Taylor (drums), Harvey Brooks (bass), and Stephen Stills (guitar). Sebastian's second long-player -- Cheapo-Cheapo Productions Presents Real Live John Sebastian -- was issued to counteract the potential damage of a completely unauthorized live package released by MGM Records. The results are wholly fulfilling and feature a simple duo of Sebastian (guitar/vocals) and Paul Harris (piano). In addition to playing favorites such as "Nashville Cats," "Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind," and "Lovin' You," he also cooked up some vintage jug band blues on "Mobile Line" and a crowd-rousing loose aggregate of oldies including "In the Still of the Night" and "Blue Suede Shoes." The Four of Us returns Sebastian back to his folk/blues roots on "Well, Well, Well" and "Black Snake Blues." The extended title track is a picturesque travelogue of places and events between two couples approaching middle age. Although the album did not do well at the cash register when it was issued, it has retained an irresistible harmony and sense of charm. Tarzana Kid suffered much the same fate as its predecessor. This is doubly unfortunate, as it likewise features some of Sebastian's best studio sides, including his serene cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Sitting in Limbo," Lowell George's "Dixie Chicken," and again a return to his roots with "Sportin' Life." Tarzana Kid is an all-star affair with the likes of David Grisman (mandolin), Ry Cooder (guitar), and David Lindley (guitar), and teamed Sebastian back up with his former producer from the Lovin' Spoonful, Erik Jacobsen. As he points out in his riveting liner notes essay, the only reason that the Welcome Back album was issued was in support of the title track, which had become a chart-topping hit as well as the theme song to the television situation comedy of the same name. That point aside, there are a few outstanding pieces, including reworked versions of "Didn't Want to Have to Do It" and "Warm Baby." A real treat awaits listeners at the end of disc three, with no less than two vintage live sets. The first includes Sebastian's entire five-song performance from the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The second is from Winterland Arena in San Francisco during the fall of 1969. For true fans, these recordings represent a grail of sorts. Faithful Virtue: The Reprise Recordings also includes a 48-page liner notes booklet with previously unissued photos and memorabilia. Additionally, there is a separate six-panel foldout poster that also contains all the lyrics from the five long-players. The North American release is limited to an edition of 3,000 and is available via the Rhino HandMade Internet audio salon. (Allmusic)

"Instrumental Fire" 1996

If you're looking for great surf and instrumental music, this is IT! "Instrumental Fire" is an excellent compilation and sampler of some of the best modern instrumental bands of today. From the trashy L.A. sounds of the Bomboras, to the smooth Los Straitjackets, the fiery Fathoms (easily the best of the modern surf bands) or the all-out space fest of Man or Astroman?, it's all here on this CD. Pulp Fiction is gone, but this is the new order of surf instrumentals. Buy this, you won't regret it...a great disc! - amazonAt the time of its 1996 release, Art Bourasseau's MuSick imprint's tag was "the Instrumental Label" (that has since changed), so this compilation of 16 wordless, but not necessarily vocal-less, recordings from around the country and even the world was a logical starting point. The liner notes are a little lame for a set of mostly obscure combos with short descriptions that try too hard to be cute instead of informational (the blurb for the Vice Royals reads "Making music for the movie of your life. Discover the magic -- live the dream"), but the sounds are consistently raw and rocking. Surf is not surprisingly heavily represented by artists such as the little-known Lord Hunt & His Missing Finks and Los Straitjackets, the latter by far the most recognizable act here. But there is plenty of variety, with garage (Germany's the Cave 4), space rock (the Bomboras), spaghetti Western (the Fathoms, Ben Vaughn), trash (Boston's Four Piece Suit), and even blues (Los Straitjackets' Eddie Angel) all rearing their murky heads over the course of the disc's short but potent 40-minute running time. Nothing lasts very long, with Man or Astro-man?'s "Intoxica" clocking in at a concise but still not too brief 1:40 and the Tiki Tones' loungy "Sneaky Tiki" getting out of the way in 1:53, so if you don't like one style, another is waiting around the corner. Many of these acts never released full albums, or if they did they are all but impossible to find, so this serves as a clearing house for great lost bands such as Scratch Bongowax and the Travelers of Tyme that maybe only had a few short-lived singles in them before they moved on to the dark recesses of instrumental rock's dusty history. The sound quality is all over the place as befits the concept, but it's consistently listenable and even the most mono of tracks, such as Lord Hunt's "Twice Pipes," fit the primitive approach of the material. The audience for this might be limited to record geeks but it shouldn't be, because any rock & roll lover will find something to love within these 16 tracks, and instrumental genre fans will need this as an essential part of their collections. - Review by Hal Horowitz

THE HUMAN EXPRESSION "Love At Psychedelic Velocity" 1965-1967

"In 1966, four high school students from the Los Angeles suburbs formed The Human Expression, and by January 1967, their first single, 'Love At Psychedelic Velocity' b/w 'Every Night', was released to an unsuspecting public. It was a dazzling, driving, opus of mind-bending sounds, and a harbinger of things to come. Their second single, 'Optical Sound' b/w 'Calm Me Down', released in the 'Summer Of Love', was a two-sided tour de force, with brooding introspective lyrics by lead singer, Jim Quarles. The Human Expression's edgy bad boy image was the antithesis of the 'flower-children' image so prevalent for groups in 1967. The Human Expression's third single was 'Sweet Child Of Nothingness', written by Mars Bonfire, who offered the band another new song, 'Born To Be Wild.' Quarles thought the lyrics trite, and since he was the lead singer, the band rejected the song, even before Steppenwolf recorded it. Nevertheless, the three singles The Human Expression released during their short-lived career, would burnish their reputation as one of the finest garage bands to emerge from the mid-60s Los Angeles music scene. Compiled on this CD are all the surviving demos and tapes of The Human Expression, along with rare band memorabilia, and demos by Quarles from 1965 (recorded just before The Human Expression)."

DION "Born To Be With You" (1975)

Dion had gone four years without a hit when he was paired with producer Phil Spector in 1974, for an album that all concerned were convinced would relaunch both men's careers. Spector himself was especially bullish about the project, returning to his old stomping grounds at Gold Star Studios and recalling engineer Stan Ross to the mixing desk for the first time since they recorded the Paris Sisters together in 1962. He then assembled an enormous band of backing musicians -- no fewer than 40 players lined up to accompany Dion, including a dozen guitarists, seven percussionists, and five pianists. The result was not, however, the sonic extravaganza that most people were expecting. Rather, where the Wall of Sound had exploded with joy, Born to Be With You seemed almost to close in on itself, a darkly introspective album that took its lead, in many ways, from the 1970 Dion hit single that was dropped in among the Spector productions, "Your Own Backyard." Lit throughout by the reflections of a middle-aged man acknowledging his prime was behind him, Born to Be With You comprised six new recordings, including a positively funereal rendering of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands," a dramatic retread of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil's "Make the Woman Love Me," and a dour Spector/Dion collaboration, "Good Lovin' Man." And the darkness didn't lift once. Dion's management was horrified, and tried hard to have the album revamped. Spector, however, maintained total control over the proceedings and, tired of the sniping, canceled plans for an American release -- Born to Be With You would ultimately appear in the U.K. only, in 1975. Dion, too, was unhappy -- "I don't think we ever really finished that," he complained in 2003. It shocked him mightily, then, to discover that names as far apart as Andrew Loog Oldham, Bobby Gillespie, Jason Pierce, and Pete Townshend have pronounced Born to Be With You one of the finest albums ever made. And they were correct. (Dave Thompson, Allmusic)

GREAT BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL Vol. 4: Just About As Good As It Gets

This fascinating collection sets out to show what was going on in the swing rock 'n' roll scene in Britain from the early 50's to 1956.Many would argue that there was no such thing as Great British Rock 'n' Roll in the 1950s, or at least not until 1958 when Cliff Richard's "Move It" offered a rather more convincing home-grown hit than all of its predecessors. However, apart from the Skiffle explosion, there was another quirky musical scene happening in Britain during the late '40s and 1950s. As far as we are aware, this compilation is the first authoritative musical documentation of that scene.
Perhaps it should better be classed as NOSTALGIA rather than Rock 'n' Roll but there is a lot of fascinating stuff here, such as the Deep River Boys (from Virginia, USA, recording in Britain during their many UK tours), Ray Ellington (a British-based black bandleader of American & Russian descent) and Winifred Atwell, a classically trained pianist from Trinidad who would go to 'her other piano' to belt out some rockin' boogies. Elsewhere there are numerous talented British jazzers seeing which way the wind was blowing and jumping that jive, and some up 'n' coming UK popsters swaying their hips to the transatlantic rhythm. And of course Tommy Steele, who was acclaimed as Britain's first Rock 'n' Roll star (long before he started serenading little white bulls).
This goes to show that swing rock 'n' roll was being recorded and performed on Britain in the early 50's far more than most realized.

Playboys - Playboys (1984)

Hi Everybody, I hesitate to post this one because it"s a french band singing in french ! But as I was listening recently this album with a friend, we found it so cool, that I felt obliged to propose it to you. The only info I found is of course in french. Enjoy tht vinyl rip!!!

Chant: François Albertini / Guitare : Michel Nègre / Guitare : Marc Galliani / Basse: Frank Durban / Batterie: Gilles Guizol

GREAT BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL Vol. 1: Just About As Good As It Gets

"LISTEN TO THE MUSIC" The '70's California Sound

The California sound became synonymous with introspective lyricism and polished (some would say slick) production values. As the 70's wore on, the genre lost some of its freshness. But at it's best, these singer / songwriters left behind a rich and meaningful body of work that remains vital today. (Barry Alfonso, Allmusic)

The Del Fuegos "The Longest Day" (1984)

Hi Everybody, for a lot of people today, the 80's means the beginning of the end, not for me as you maybe noticed with some of my posts, I think contrariwise that it is the last big decade of rock, an epoch where everything was allowed, and first Rock'n'Roll... Enjoy that vinyl rip!!! - Magic Kaic's MusicThe Del Fuegos were proud sons of Boston, Massachusetts, but you might not have guessed that by listening to their debut album, The Longest Day, which mixed the swaggering thunder of heartland garage rock with the rootsy twang of Dixie-fried rockabilly and roots-conscious rock 'n' roll. While the band would later claim that producer Mitchell Froom slicked back their sound considerably from that of their raucous club shows, which earned them their hometown reputation, the results actually capture the band's swing and stomp without an excess of sonic affectation (something that would later become Froom's hallmark), reveling in the crack of Brent "Woody" Giessmann's drums, and the bark of Dan and Warren Zanes' guitars. And if Dan and Warren's songs didn't exactly stretch the boundaries of early rock archetypes, they honored the traditions in the best ways -- by playing roots rock with sweat, fire, good humor, and a lot of heart and soul. And you just can't argue the genius of this line from "When The News Is On": "And sometimes love is a lot like a shoe/ You run around too much and it'll fall apart." The Longest Day isn't the sort of album likely to change the way you look at rock and roll, but it will probably remind you why you love the stuff, and that's more than enough reason to slap it into your stereo and turn it up. "LISTEN TO THE MUSIC"'70's Male Singer/Songwriters

The 70's brought more than a turn of the calendar page to American pop music. After the intensity of the psychedelic era, youthful audiences were seeking solace and insight in place of acid-etched visions. Filling this need was a fresh crop of writers/artists, each with their own individual confession to offer. The male representatives of this singer/songwriter school often cast themselves as sensitive, guitar-strumming poets unafraid to show their vulnerable sides to fans. Critics accused them of wallowing in self-obsession….but, at their best, these latter-day troubadours created music of great craft, wit, and heart. (Barry Alfonso, Allmusic)
