EDDIE BO "In The Pocket With Eddie Bo" New Orleans Rock & Roll, R&B; Soul, Funk Goodies 1955-2007

This Vampi Soul collection is arguably the most representative audio portrait of the New Orleans songwriting and performing kingpin, Edwin Bocage. Covering 60 years of music making, its whopping 28 tracks highlight his songs, singles, and productions for other artists. Like all of the best New Orleans music, this baby is sweaty, raw, greasy, and super funky. Some of the classics here include Bo's stellar bit of proto-soul-funk in "I Found a Little Girl" (while it may borrow from Ray Charles' gospel-soul inspiration, it gives back in its prefiguring of the bridge style James Brown used to great success later on), "We Like Mambo" (the Afro-Caribbean style welded hard to NOLA second line), and the great break-driven duet "Lover & Friend" with Inez Cheatham. There are an equal number of highlights in his productions and arrangements including -- but not limited to -- "Horse with a Freeze, Pt. 1" by Roy Ward, the Explosions' "Garden of Our Trees," with its burning bassline and tight horn charts, and Curley Moore & Cool Ones' "Funky Yeah" (which is just damn nasty in the way it uses Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" rhythm). Then there's the elastic wah-wah guitar and keys in "The Rubber Band" by Bo with the Soul Finders and the straight-up employment of a Motown-style string chart on his 2007 single "Chained." Anyway you want to listen to this slab, chronologically, on shuffle, or one track played over and over until you gotta move to the next, is just fine because In the Pocket with Eddie Bo. is the bomb. "THE EARLS OF DUKE"

In 1958, with Don Robey’s record company stock on the rise, he formulated a touring review from his biggest R&B stars. The review was known as "Blues Consolidated" and the headliners were invariably Bobby "Blue" Bland and Herman "Little Junior" Parker. Bobby "Blue" Bland had started as a valet and PA to Parker and other Memphis Bluesmen in the late 1940s, but rapidly became a star performer, scoring hit after hit well into the 1980s, many of his records being much covered blues classics. Little Junior Parker is another blues and oddly, Rockabilly legend, whose "Mystery Train" did much to make Elvis what he became... working with such figures as Sam Phillips and Ike Turner, Little Junior Parker had a string of increasingly larger hits right through until 1969, when his new label Capitol started cutting him on ill-advised Beatles covers. But the tough 'Drownin' On Dry Land' deservedly gave him his last R&B chart success in early 1971 which sadly was the same year as his death. It would be thirty years later that he would be honoured by finally being inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame. Both Hall Of Famer's, both amazing performers, both at the bedrock of the music we know and love today... how can you resist! (Cherry Red)

JAMES BROWN "JAZZ"

One of the many compilations issued in the wake of James Brown's passing in 2007 is this rather strange and necessary one produced by Alan Leeds and Harry Weinger. There's no irony in the title, and it's only a little misleading. Brown loved all kinds of music throughout his lifetime and made no secret of it. This set compiles 12 cuts, all of which Brown originally produced, that accent the jazzier -- and sometimes near all-out jazz (though everything on this baby has more than a little soul grit mixed in) -- side of the Godfather. The coolest thing about this set is that it contains numerous unreleased alternate mixes, extended versions, single edits, and literally unreleased versions and tunes that span from standards and soul-jazz cuts to '70s-era pop tunes. Ranging from 1964's reading of the Adderley Brothers' "Tengo Tango" (never before issued in any form) to a 1970s alternate mix of "For Once in My Life," this is perhaps among the most ambitious of Brown recordings to be released in quite some time. Released gems here include Brown on a killer B-3 take of Jimmy McGriff's "All About My Girl" in 1966 and his version of Joe Zawinul's "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)" from 1967. In between, there are hip mixes of standards like "Cottage for Sale" and "That's My Desire." The sequencing here is not stale either, since it's not chronological. In fact, since it bookends in the year 1970, with the 1960s material sandwiched between, it's rather wonderful aesthetically. Recommended. (Thom Jurek, Allmusic)

JUKE BOY BONNER "The Legacy Of The Blues"

Juke Boy Bonner remains one of the great hidden treasures of the blues. He was a one-man band who had serious lyrical concerns in all of his blues, creating stark and moving poetry out of the simplest of forms. Working in a Jimmy Reed style of guitar boogie patterns and blowing an expressive neck-rack harmonica, he never saw much in the way of fame or fortune, but every single session produced music of considerable worth. Add this solo session, produced by Chris Strachwitz for Sonet's Legacy of the Blues series, to the list of essential albums to put into your shopping cart, as it's the blues at its most personal and moving. In tracks like "I'm a Bluesman," "Problems All Around," "Tired of the Greyhound Bus," and "Funny Money," you'll hear a bluesman laying his heart on the line for the music -- something that should happen every time the "record" button goes on, but rarely does. MIKE SEEGER "Close to Home" - Old Time Music from Mike Seeger's Collection 1952-1967

Collected by Mike Seeger from 1952 to 1967 as he roamed around the Appalachian Mountains, Close to Home is one of the better detailed sets of authentic old-time Southern American music to be found. Though mostly recorded at the musician's home on a single, hand-held microphone, the warmth and charm of the performances captured make up for any supposed lack of recording quality, as Seeger no doubt took great pains to document these archaic stylings before they died with their performers. Of the 38 tracks featured, some legends like Sara and Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family fame, Elizabeth Cotten, and fiddler Eck Robertson appear, though the majority are simply local legends or unknowns. As such, it might come as some surprise to hear the level of accomplishment reached by these common folks, as a few were even said to have been badly out of practice when recorded. A majority of the tracks are lively fiddle or banjo instrumentals, though a few harmonica workouts, gorgeous autoharp and dulcimer tunes, and a cappella tracks appear, as well. This is very honest music, without a hint of pretension, and one can only wonder how many similar talents lived and died without ever having shared their talents outside of their local community. Excellent liner notes composed by Seeger himself give a wonderfully detailed commentary on how he came about to record the featured artists, and also place the performers within their historical context. There might be more complete collections on the market, but for the single-disc price and the amount of quality music here, Close to Home is highly recommended. (ALLMUSIC)

"Work Your Soul" Jamaican 60s & Northern 1966-74

Twenty foot stompin' gems! Some superb soulful songs on here, sung in a distinctive, slightly sweeter Jamaican way. Jillem
The influence of the Motown sound didn't only spread throughout the U.S. -- Kingston, Jamaica, epicenter of the reggae world, was no stranger to soul music, either. But while the vast majority of the vintage Jamaican soul that's so far been reissued is inflected with the syncopated island beats that are the hallmark of reggae, the music compiled on the excellent Work Your Soul: Jamaican 60s & Northern 1966-74 is virtually indistinguishable from its urbanized inspirations, emphasizing more traditional, straightforward rhythms and arrangements with only the occasional hint of Caribbean patois in the vocals to belie the performances' geographic origins. Equally remarkable is that the majority of material here are originals, suggesting just how deeply the American soul idiom impacted the reggae community -- the artists weren't just adapting records out of Detroit, Memphis, and Chicago for their own needs, but striving to evoke the stateside sound at the risk of suppressing their native instincts. Highlights include the Marvels' "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show," Jackie Edwards' "I Feel So Bad," Jimmy Cliff's "Let's Dance," Laurel Aitken's "Never You Hurt," and Sugar Simone's "I Want to Know." ~Jason Ankeny (allmusic)

LUCKY MILLINDER & HIS ORCHESTRA "Apollo Jump" 1941-1951

Lucky Millinder could not read music, nor could he play any instrument, Millinder was not the only bandleader with little musical knowledge, Cab Calloway, Jimmie Lunceford, and Tiny Bradshaw were all bandleaders who waved a baton in front of a band, jumped around and maybe sang a song. Yet Lucky Millinder was a catalyst who could bring out the very best in many musicians he employed, and with his tremendous eye and ear for talent he hired an impressive range of top-notch instrumentalists and singers during his 20 years as a bandleader. Above all, Lucky Millinder was a fantastic showman, one that Count Basie in his autobiography Good Morning Blues called "‘one of the best front men in the business, right up there, giving Cab Calloway and Willie Bryant some real competition." This 48 track career overview features the cream of Millinder’s repertoire. (Proper)

An Intro To "NIGHT TRAIN KEYBOARD KINGS"

Tuff City's Night Train International imprint specializes in rare blues, jazz, and R&B material with a particular emphasis on New Orleans musicians, and the label's vigorous release schedule (the 35 tracks here are drawn from 30 different albums) has resulted in a huge catalog of hard to find gems. This two-disc sampler concentrates on keyboard players, with the first disc centering on New Orleans performers while the second features swing, R&B, and jump blues artists from outside the Crescent City. The diversity of styles here is impressive, ranging from boogie-woogie romps to organ-led soul-jazz instrumentals and even some big-band piano pieces. Among the highlights on the New Orleans disc are James Booker's funky "Beale Street Popeye," Wayne & the Velvetones' delightful "Ham Sandwich Twist," a blistering version of "Last Night" by June Gardner (featuring James Booker), and a pair of Eddie Bo keepers, the stomping "Timber" and the fluid, impressive "I Just Wonder." The second disc yields Cousin Joe's "Box Car Shorty / Peter Blue," Lloyd Glenn's accurately languid "Blues Hangover" (which manages somehow to sound both exhausted and energetic at the same time), Jay McShann's bubbling "Hot Biscuits," and Gladys Bently's big, strutting "4th of July Boogie." A wonderfully diverse -- yet still cohesive -- anthology, this one is a winner from first track to last. (STEVE LEGETT, ALLMUSIC)

"LOS ANGELES RHYTHM & BLUES"

Two discs - 73,69 minutes each approximately. The sound on the vast majority of these tracks is very good, surprising knowing the era and the various recording studios used at that time. These tracks are clean yet warm sounding, which only helps music from this era. The booklet gives artist-by-artist info that follows the individual tracks, and helps place this music in it's time. There are black and white photographs of several artists featured in this collection. This music, loosely titled Los Angeles r&b or L.A. blues, is actually music from a number of artists who either moved to or spent some time in L.A., and their collective sounds became known as L.A. r& b. These tracks were all recorded between 1944 and 1954-prime years for this style of music. By and large it's piano-based music, with guitar used as a rhythm instrument. There are exceptions (CHUCK NORRIS AND HIS GUITAR,T-BONE WALKER,JIMMY LIGGINS,PEE WEE CRAYTON,CLARENCE "GATEMOUTH" BROWN,J.D. EDWARDS), where the guitar is used as a lead instrument, which gives this set needed depth. An interesting sidelight, on Billy Valentine's "Beer Drinking Woman", John Coltrane is heard on tenor sax in a small group setting. The vocals are smooth and fairly sophisticated, which is what listeners wanted during the post-war years in big cities like Los Angeles. Anyone who has heard the great Charles Brown or Amos Milburn will have a good idea of the vocal styles found here. The tracks, for the most part, are up-tempo and swinging, with either a rolling piano or a hot sax solo accompanying the vocals. This is a good look at big city r&b on the west coast during the post-war years. The majority of tracks heard here are well worth a listen, with even the lesser tracks having that certain "something", that can't be heard in today's music. The smooth, jazzy, urbane feel of this music, from so long ago, will capture your ears almost immediately I don't know how long this set will remain in stock, so if this is your thing, pick it up while it's available-you won't be sorry. BOB & GENE "If This World Were Mine…" 1967-1972

In the late ‘60’s when soul music--led by such independent powerhouses as Motown and Stax--ruled the charts and countless smaller record labels vied for precious radio airplay, there was a reason why soul slingers like Dyke and the Blazers, Darrell Banks and Donnie Elbert all left their home town of Buffalo, NY. Buffalo, like Detroit, Newark and many other industrial cities across America, was in volatile flux; its music scene was not immune. Unemployment levels skyrocketed as factory jobs vanished. Then, in the summer of ’67, race riots chased much of what musically lingered, as local artists hit the road in search of safer, greener pastures.
One musician who stood his ground however was William Nunn, a man of many hats: singer, saxophonist, factory worker, union leader and father of two. In the fall of ‘67, he built a music studio in his basement and began inviting neighborhood youth--who might otherwise be tempted by the city’s burgeoning gangs--inside his home to express themselves through music. Mr. Nunn promised investment and belief in their talent if they offered discipline and hard work. To great response, they came, alone and in groups, dreaming of a future as professional recording artists. As a result, Mo Do Records (as in “I’m broke, I need some mo’ dough”) was born.
Surrounded by these domestic tones, William’s fifteen-year old son, Bobby Nunn, himself an aspiring singer, was ripe for dreaming. He got together with his sixteen year-old buddy Eugene Coplin and after school the teen duo—now known as Bob & Gene--lost themselves day after day writing and singing love songs. As Bobby says, “We’d see groups like the Five Stairsteps come to town and how the girls would react when they started singing, boy, and that was it, we knew we had to sing too.” The boys dedicated their friendship to perfecting their vocal harmonies while composing original tunes and with the help of some of Buffalo’s finest jazz and funk musicians, fresh Bob & Gene 45s, beginning with ‘67’s “You Gave Me Love”, soon followed. Regional radio play propelled the boys to local fame and over the following four years they routinely performed while assembling enough material for a full-length album. But by ‘71, Mo Do, like so many local business ventures at the time, simply ran out of dough. The LP never came to be.
Fast forward three decades to 2001. Record collector, DJ and New York soul music historian David Griffiths stumbles across a now rare Bob & Gene 45 whose label hints at an “upcoming album If This World Were Mine”. Curious, Griffiths places one call after another when finally, an elderly William Nunn happens to pick up the phone. An eventual meeting ensues and, stunned, Griffiths finds himself entrusted with boxes of disintegrating Mo Do reel-to-reel tapes. “It was crazy on so many levels,” Griffiths states. “You had these intensely emotional songs, mixed with this lo-fi quality, that in a way represented so much great music from so many cities that were never really heard by anyone.” Deciding these tapes needed to be heard, Griffiths (with the Nunn family’s blessing) brings them to Brooklyn contemporary soul / funk powerhouse Daptone Records. What you now hold in your hands, 36 years after its intended release is the tender, re-mastered result in its entirety: Bob & Gene’s If This World Were Mine…
Laced with achingly lush soul ballads as well as funky, Five Stairsteps-esque dance numbers, If This World demonstrates Bob and Gene’s mature songwriting and vocal prowess. With lyrics surely aimed at a “special someone” as well as their ailing community, the twelve songs here are pleas for love and hope during a time when hatred and despair wrapped Buffalo’s bleak horizon. Still involved in the music business today, Bobby Nunn would eventually leave Buffalo, settle in California and work with folks such as Rick James. Gene Coplin still lives in Buffalo and is a practicing minister. The two remain friends and feel lucky to have had an environment like Mo Do to call home. As Gene says, “It was home for our hearts.” True, Mo Do will go down in the history of soul music as one in a million failed record labels. And though, sadly, the late William Nunn never got to see his labor of love come to its ultimate fruition, If This World Were Mine. . . is indeed testimony that his spirit lives on. (LINER NOTES)

BILLY MURE "Billy Mure's Supersonic Guitars" Vol. I + Vol. II (1959) + "Fireworks" (1958)

Billy Mure was one of those uncredited session men from the 1950s whose guitar licks have graced many a rock n roll record. Besides his session work he also recorded many solo albums, which are held Ăn high esteem by those who are familiar with them. Some aficionados of early electric guitar music rate him at least as highly as Les Paul.
Born in the Big Apple in 1915, Mure played violin by age five. In his early teens he switched to guitar and by age 13 he was composing. Between 1937 and 1943 he was part of Val Ernie's prominent society orchestra. Enlisted from 1943-1945, he learned arranging while playing with an Air Force band. Upon returning to New York City in 1947, he joined the staff orchestra at radio station WNEW, where he stayed for ten years. He picked up occasional studio work on the side, playing on a couple of singles by the Three Suns (a trio that included Al Nevins and scored a # 1 hit in 1947 with "Peg'O My Heart"). Starting 1957, his work as a session guitarist began to increase. Especially the Atlantic and Jubilee labels often made use of his services, resulting in sessions with artists like LaVern Baker, Ivory Joe Hunter, Joe Turner, Bobby Darin ("Splish Splash"), Ben E. King, Bobby Freeman ("Do You Wanna Dance"), Don Rondo, Della Reese, the Sparkletones, Ersel Hickey and many others. On these sessions he often also served as arranger and / or conductor.
Mure was also a prolific songwriter, with 243 entries in the BMI database. He produced and wrote "Got A Match" for the Daddy-O's (# 39 in 1958) on the Cabot label (a cover version by Frank Gallop on ABC made # 57), but more interesting is his composition "Gazachstahagen", a good R&R instrumental, which the Wildcats took to # 57 on the Billboard charts in early 1959 (United Artists 154 / London HLT 8787). It's not clear if Billy himself played on the record ; according to Joel Whitburn, the Wildcats were a trio (discovered by Mure) : Dennis Gorgas (guitar), Frank Rainey (organ) and Pat Piccininno (drums). But there is also a Wildcats LP, "Bandstand Record Hop" (United Artists UAL 3031), which is credited to "The Wildcats featuring Billy Mure". Another chart success was "String Of Trumpets" by the Trumpeteers (Splash 800, # 64 in 1959, issued in the UK on Felsted AF 120), a big-band styled group directed by Billy Mure. Also released in the UK was "Jambalaya"/"Kaw-Liga" on Top Rank JAR 344 (1960). Two fine guitar instrumentals.
Already in 1957, Mure had started making albums featuring his "Super- sonic" guitar. His first LP was recorded for RCA Victor and was called "Supersonic Guitars in Hi-Fi" (RCA LPM 1536, released in mono only). For this album Mure utilized four guitars with amplified rhythm, two drums and one bass. The playing was wild and frantic and would fit right into the new sounds of rock n roll. His next LP was "Fireworks" (RCA LPM 1694), this time recorded in "living stereo". It included four of Billy's own songs, "Firecrackers", "Dancing Guitars", "Guitar Theme" and "Crackerjack". He added a third drummer and eight vocalists for these sessions, giving him a unique sound. Billy followed this with a third album for RCA entitled "Supersonics In Flight" (LPM 1869, 1958). His first MGM LP, "Supersonic Guitars" (MGM E 3780, 1960) is in the same vein. It is primarily on these four LP's that Mure's reputation as an exceptional guitarist is based. He followed Les Paul's pioneering work in multitracking, recording separate guitar tracks, often speeding them up for spectacular effects. Unlike Les Paul, he didn't enjoy consistent label sponsorship, so his albums sold poorly and are now hard to find.
In 1963 he left RCA, where he had been on the A&R staff, and formed his own independent production company, BM Productions. He worked with a variety of pop and rock and roll acts, most of them minor, but achieved at least one Top 3 hit with Marcie Blane's "Bobby's Girl" (1962). His later albums, on MGM, Kapp, Everest and the budget label Strand (for which he made several LP's of Hawaiian music), are less interesting. Now in his nineties, Mure is still in good health and continues to perform occasionally. (Black Cat Rockabilly)

Miss Monster Club "Eating Brains Made Me Smart" 2005

The Monstrous girlie-garage combo from Turku, Finland, with capital M. This amazingly scary band is still kickin' today with minor line-up changes. These girls made impossible true. Scary surf-like tunes with modern garage touch make Hanna Hopea's songwriting skills unique and one of the kind, and still highly comparable in every possible scale in the world. Somehow finnish garage scene is so dead that no-one recognizes this band, like it should. Likewise, noone made really made a real number out of their idols, Thee Ultra Bimboos. Listen to this, and you'll know how hard it is to make great shit, when there's no-one to back you up. - http://www.missmonsterclub.com

The Early Stars of "The Grand Ole Opry"

12 notable Grand Ole Opry performers. - Jillem
Created in 1925 by station manager George Dewey Hay, the Grand Ole Opry began as a weekly radio program that featured traditional "country" music, including folk songs and classic mountain tunes. In 1939, the show moved to NBC radio where it reached tens of thousands of listeners across the country. During the 1950s, the Opry was one of the nation's favorite radio programs, and with every song played on the Opry stage broadcast to America, Nashville solidified its spot as the country music capital of the world.

"Surfin the Spillway" 1996

This is easily the best compilation of new artists in a long while. Michigan bands all, there are almost no weak spots here, and some tracks are just plain killer. An absolute must have, no ifs, ands or buts! Magnificent. Did I say I like it? More like love it!!! - Phil Dirt
Michigan surf music compilation with contributions by The Prodigals, The Silencers, The Volcanos, Professor Schmiddy, The Campus Kings, Mondo Mod, and The Lustre Kings. Ann Arbor's The Prodigals bring you four brand new tracks of solid surf typified by absolutely burning guitar work and eclectic arrangements Ă  la Australia's famed Atlantics. Only their live show can match it. Way boss.
Young upstarts The Silencers clock in with their hot 45 release which has been reissued here for your listening pleasure. The "Satan on acid" intro is a nice touch from this metro area wĂĽnderkind. Detroit's The Volcanos represent the old guard of the Michigan surf set. Here they dish out two swingin' samples of the sound that has enabled them to rise above fad and fashion, keeping instrumental music alive and well in the Motor City.
Professor Schmiddy has come to us in a number of guises (a.k.a. Kevin Strange, The Lonely Surfer, etc.) but, as always, he delivers the big surfin' sounds pure and simple. "Hotfoot" makes its debut here while "Outbound" comes to you courtesy of his HHR 45, no longer in print but preserved on SPILLWAY in its full glory.
Hot, new rabble rousers the Campus Kings make their mark with these three brand spankin' new instrumental gems. Their style runs the gamut from pounding "Las Vegas Grind" to shades of the wild west. Keep your ears peeled for that wailin' sax!
The instro-a-go-go sounds of Mondo Mod have been wowing locals for over a year now. Here they turn in two Farfisa-driven winners plus a rousing version of the Marketts' "Penguin" - a tip of the hat to the inspired genius that inspires their own.
Last on the list but first in the hearts of many are the late-lamented Lustre Kings. Sheer surfin' fire here on their first (and last) HHR 45 (a split single with Professor Schmiddy and the Elements). Testament to their brief but memorable career... and quite likely the only time you'll ever hear a reverb tank fighting for its life. - Album Notes

Evan Johns & The H-Bombs "Please Mr. Santa Claus" 1991

The seasonal and primarily instrumental Please Mr. Santa Claus is a holiday postcard that features a polka, the fiddle-fueled "Little Cajun Drummer Boy," a raging "Telstar" and plenty of free-style pickin' throughout. - trouserpress
Put this nine-song mini-album CD in the Christmas stocking of any rock & roll fan. The "crash and burn" guitar style of Johns recalls Santo And Johnny ("Snowed In") and Jimmy Bryant ("Santa's Little Helper"), while his snarly vocals on the title track bring new meaning to "cool yule." Spiced with original instrumentals and a cover of "Telstar," this is a must for Evan Johns fans and those who want a little bite in their yuletide listening. - by Dennis MacDonald

Bass – Dan McCann, John Combs / Drums, Percussion – Jim Starboard / Fiddle – Champ Hood / Guitar – Mark Korpi / Guitar, Steel Guitar, Organ [Vox], Vocals – Evan Johns

JAMES BROWN "The Payback" (1973)

A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". © 1996-2012, Dusty Groove, Inc.
