Chuck Prophet "Age Of Miracles" 2004

Lots of fun stuff hiding out on this one... and the more you listen the more you'll discover. When last we left our hero, the former Green on Red guitarist--one of the most underrated Telecaster players on the planet--was parsing the connections between neo-soul, twangy blues, and Dylanesque rock on 2002's No Other Love, perhaps his best solo album. On this postmodern roots plunge, he swims deeper into pastiche song structures, adding lighter strings, heavier guitar licks, and more restless romanticism. His beats, however, remain as thick as they are organic, his voice occluded in a raspy filter. If the songwriting resonates a bit less fiercely (with the notable exceptions of the title track and the power-poppy "Just to See You Smile"), Prophet continues to make records that sound like none other on the loosely defined alt-country scene--lush, elliptical, inventive, moody, and deeply, even eloquently, grooved. --Roy Kastentrax:

"WESTERN SWING ON THE RADIO"

Western Swing on the Radio is a 20-song compilation of Western Swing from the '40s and '50s, including terrific cuts from bandleaders like Bob Wills, Wesley Tuttle, Hank Thompson, Leon McAuliffe, Tex Williams, and Cecil Brower. What makes the compilation quite interesting, for both casual fans and collectors, is how it spotlights lesser-known artists, not just the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills. In doing so, it provides an excellent service, demonstrating the richness of the music, as well as its surprising variety. It remains a terrific, low-key way of exploring one of the most popular genres in country music.by Thom Owens, Allmusic

Chuck Prophet "No Other Love" 2002

Throughout the album drips and burns. Shuffles, prowl, broods and twangs. Nugget begets nugget. He's on fire.No Other Love is the sixth album in a solo career that began when California native Chuck Prophet split from Green on Red in 1990. Green on Red helped lead the way for the insurgent country of the 1990s, but on his own Prophet has grown far beyond the category. His previous album, 2000's The Hurting Business, was a striking breakthrough--hip-hop scratching and samples added to his bedrock country and R&B influences. No Other Love is maverick genre-bending in the manner of Beck and Jim White, and the stylistic variety suits Prophet's compositions, peopled by crazed desperados and beautiful losers. The songs run the gamut from the raunchy horn-driven swagger of "That's How Much I Need Your Love" to the stinging, pleading "Elouise," where his ever-inventive guitar vies with Farfisa organ. Prophet enjoys spicing songs with pop culture references, but his wry humor is counterbalanced by a strong moral undertow in "I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman I See" and the beautiful "Summertime Thing." This is a Prophet with plenty of honor. --Gavin Martintrax:

RED ALLEN featuring Frank Wakefield "The Folkways years 1964-1983"

The late Red Allen is considered to be one of the most important exponents of the "high, lonesome sound," the epitome of bluegrass singing. Red Allen's spirited vocals and strong rhythm guitar make him one of the greatest innovators in bluegrass while remaining true to his roots, playing it straight and singing it with soul. Allen's 1964 Folkways bluegrass album Red Allen, Frank Wakefield and the Kentuckians, featuring Wakefield on mandolin, is regarded as one of the most influential documents in the genre. Smithsonian Folkways presents this remarkable album plus six never-released cuts and additional selections from four later Folkways albums. 72 minutes. 36-page booklet with photos and extensive notes.

Chuck Prophet "The Hurting Business" 2000

For most of his life, San Francisco has been Chuck Prophet’s muse...or more accurately, his drug of choice. “It can suck you under. That first hit. It really does a whammy to you. And if you're like me you can find yourself chasing the San Francisco dragon for the rest of your life. That's what the record is about.”Now five records into a solo career, the former guitarist for Green on Red leaves his stripped-down, bluesy past behind, adding a score of Mellotron, saxophone, synthesizer, and sampling for a more urban mosaic. The result is a soulful medley where Prophet continues to follow the Dylan book of songwriting, arming his characters with compelling story lines and clever wordplay. The title track's account of a broken relationship proves exultant thanks to a playful Farfisa organ and splendid backing vocals by Prophet's wife, Stephanie Finch. Prophet mimics Tom Waits over a fierce J.J. Cale riff on "La Paloma." And radio programmers looking for a hit should check out "Dyin' All Young," a mother's ode to her young son's death. It's an instantly catchy, though forever haunting ballad that propels Chuck Prophet up another rung on the ladder of underappreciated songwriters. --Scott Holtertrax:

"CINCINNATI BLUES"

It's not the Mississippi Delta, but Cincinnati has a rich and varied blues heritage. When W.C. Handy published the first blues hit song, “Memphis Blues,” in 1912, it was with a Cincinnati company. Eight years later, when the record industry loosened up enough to allow an African-American woman to record a blues song (then a craze among white vaudeville acts such as Sophie Tucker), it was Cincinnatian Mamie Smith who broke the color line. That song and 49 more can be found on Cincinnati Blues, an excellent and essential two-CD set from England's Catfish label. The collection will be released in the United States on Tuesday. The set comes with a detailed booklet, annotated with a genuine sense of place by Steven Tracy, the Cincinnati native who wrote the local blues history, Going to Cincinnati (University of Illinois Press; $29.95, $16.95 paperback). With its broad scope, Cincinnati Blues is as much an overview of early blues styles as it is a document of the local scene. The set opens with Ms. Smith's groundbreaking “Crazy Blues,” but it quickly forsakes that vaudeville blues sound, with its hokey trombones, for an earthier country blues style. With its rural guitars and loping rhythms, it's a sound shared by the jug bands of Louisville and Memphis. “Sixth Street Moan,” by Kid Cole, for example, could have just as easily come from Memphis' Furry Lewis, with “Beale” substituting for “Sixth.”
Jug bands started in Louisville, entertaining the crowds at the Kentucky Derby, but the most popular groups came out of Memphis. These groups started a national craze that blended percussive washboards, trumpet-like kazoos and tuba-like jugs with more traditional instruments. Two local groups are here, the Cincinnati Jug Band (whose “Newport Blues” was also on Harry Smith's seminal Anthology of American Folk Music) and King David's Jug Band.
Piano blues is represented by three non-Cincinnati artists who happened to record here. Indianapolis' Leroy Carr pays tribute to the local scene with “George Street Blues,” about the West End's equivalent to Beale or Bourbon. Walter Davis, who recorded “M&O Blues” here in 1930, hailed from St. Louis. Pianist Jesse James was recalled by the late Pigmeat Jarrett as living here in the '50s. But Mr. Tracy cites blues scholars who trace Mr. James to Memphis and Little Rock, Ark. Indeed his final song (and the last on the set) is “61 Highway Blues” about the road that runs from Memphis through the Mississippi hill country and into the Delta. This doesn't mean, of course, that there were no Cincinnati blues pianists. But the local blues artists who traveled to Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, New York and Atlanta to record were country bluesmen, probably chosen by the record companies to compete with the popular jug bands and guitarists from fellow river cities Louisville and Memphis. Only two songs were recorded in the Tristate — Walter Davis' “M&O Blues” (cut in Cincinnati) and Bob Cole's “Sing Song Blues” (done at Gennett Studios in Richmond, Ind.).
Had the record companies sent field units here specifically in search of blues, it's likely that we'd have an even more varied portrait of local blues.
Cincinnati Blues is the definitive collection of what did get recorded between the two world wars, classic country blues with plenty of references to the Queen City's wild, river town past.
In “I'm Going to Cincinnati,” Walter Coleman sings, “Now when you come to Cincinnati, stop at Sixth and Main. That's where the good, hustlin' women get the good cocaine.”
Most of this stuff has been available piecemeal on various anthologies for years. Cincinnati Blues brings together the city's early blues heritage in a single, well-annotated (and bargain-priced) collection. This is an essential part of any collection of local music. And it took a European record label to do it. Thank you, Catfish Records. By Larry Nager, The Cincinnati Enquirer

THE QUARTER AFTER "Changes Near" 2007

The Quarter Afters' Changes Near is an accomplished, finely-crafted record in the Neo-Folk Psychedelic space. The production is consistently strong and the mix and the sound quality somehow manage to be both old and new at the same time.
It's a big step forward in the evolution of The QA, as well as a big step back toward the roots of their family tree, The Byrds. To review The QA one feels compelled to address their relationship to The Byrds. They are direct off-spring, perhaps a grandchild. In the song, appropriately titled "This is How I Want to Know You", one can hear all of their signature elements--12 string Rickenbacker, layered, smooth harmonies, loose rockin solos going a little longer than you'd expect, shakers and tambourines and well crafted, tight lyrics.
(Amazon)Brand spanking new album from psych-pop kingpins. Lead by the two Campanella siblings- songwriter/singer Dominic & guitarist/producer Robert. Dom`s prominent twelve-string Rickenbacker & rich melodies set the tone for songs that range from dense guitar-driven psychedelic attacks to further explorations into down home country in the grand tradition of West Coast rock. They are joined by a collection of LA musicians including friend & mentor Ric Menck (Velvet Crush, the Tyde), Matthew Sweet, Miranda Lee Richards, Mara Keagle, Eric Heywood (Son Volt), Christoff W. Certik (Winter Flowers), Kirk Hellie (Meow Meow), Probyn Gregory (Wondermints, Brian Wilson Band), & Matthew Sigley (Lovetones, Daytime Frequency). POPMATTERS: "It is a fine line between derivation and influence. The work of Quarter After exhibited on this perfectly transcendent piece of retro pop easily places them closer to the latter. As his swollen list of credits attests, Rob`s skills as a producer are unsurpassed. The bright, harmonized, richly dynamic sheen on this record is not a parody of groundbreaking `60s sound, but a shining example of it still vibrating in the 21st century." (Not Lame)trax:

WAND DEEP SOUL "Soulful Broadway 1650" - Vol. 1

The primary subsidiary of Florence Greenberg's Scepter Records, the Wand imprint was founded in 1961. Though the launching pad for hits including Chuck Jackson's "Any Day Now," the Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout" and Maxine Brown's "Oh No, Not My Baby," its biggest record wasn't an R&B; effort at all, but the Kingsmen's frat rock monolith "Louie Louie"; still, despite the occasional chart hit Wand never really experienced the kind of prominence enjoyed by Scepter, and even seemed to suffer from something of an identity crisis -- in the eyes of many it was an uptown soul label, but in fact a fair chunk of its output trafficked in a more rural, deeper soul idiom. Soulful Broadway 1650 Vol. 1: Wand Deep Soul fills in the gaps by assembling some of these little-known singles, and while there's nothing here to rival the output of labels like Stax or Atlantic, this is nevertheless the real deal: rootsy, poignant soul molded from the hardscrabble earth of the American south. Highlighted by four cuts from a pre-Blowfly Clarence Reid ("Somebody Will," "Part of Your Love," "I Refuse to Give Up" and "I'm Your Yes Man"), the disc also includes entries from the Masqueraders ("Let's Face Facts"), and Marvin Preyer ("What Can I Call My Own?"). ~ Jason Ankeny, Allmusictrax:

"WESTERN" COWBOY BALLADS & SONGS 1925-1939

The Frémeaux & Associés release Western Cowboy Ballads and Songs 1925-1939 compiles the early recordings of all the famous cowboy songs one would expect plus plenty more which never rooted into American popular culture of the era as deeply. "The Gal I Left Behind Me," "Cattle Call," "Home on the Range," and "Oh! Suzannah!" are all collected here alongside the amazing performance by the Sons of the Pioneers of the dark, yet joyous, "Hold That Critter Down" and Powder River Jack Lee's humorous and cocky run-through of "Tying a Knot in the Devil's Tail." This set is put together nicely in that the first disc in the set of two is devoted to actual singing cowboys such as J.D. Farley and Jules Verne Allen, while the second disc is devoted to the stars of the early Hollywood Westerns like Gene Autry, Patsy Montana, and Roy Rogers providing a nice compact study showing how much influence authentic cowboys had on the music moviegoers heard from the musical Westerns with which the culture was so obsessed at the time.by Gregory McIntosh, ALLMUSIC

The Vibes "What's Inside?" 1986

Among all of the bands to emerge from the U.K. Trash’n’Garage scene, few made it more often onto Psychobillies’ record players than THE VIBES. Though they drifted away further down the road of Acid with ?What’s Inside? compared to their earlier output, many of the eleven tracks offered by this Chainsaw Records release still have the power to please most open-minded Psychobillies. Their lone long-playing album was also a solid commercial success, teasing the Top 10 of the U.K. Independent Chart in Autumn 1986.trax:

"NEW YORK CITY BLUES" 1940 - 1950

New York City Blues: 1940-1950 presents a window into the blues musicians who moved to New York City after the war and found themselves somewhat of a community in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the time. As a result, much of this collection strays from the general expectations of early acoustic blues recordings and instead supplies some refined performances from the likes of Leadbelly and Josh White, which both had success attributed to the folk community even though they were rooted firmly in blues traditions. French label Fremeaux & Associes always digs deep when assembling these packages to ensure that the should-have-been classics are seated next to the classics, and this release is no different. From the legendary Sonny Terry to the unheard-of Dennis McMillan, New York City Blues: 1940-1950 has plenty of material to study from a historical standpoint as well as for pure listening enjoyment. by Gregory McIntosh, Allmusic

"GOSPEL" VOL. 3 - GUITAR EVEANGELISTS & BLUESMEN 1927-1944

Where the first collection in Fremeaux & Associes' gospel series, Gospel, Vol. 1: 1926-1942, was a nice overview of many different styles of gospel and the second edition, Gospel, Vol. 2: Gospel Quartets 1921-1942, focused solely on vocal quartets, the third collection enjoys many of the benefits of diversity featured on volume one, while implementing a similar focus on one section within the whole of gospel recordings. Gospel, Vol. 3: Guitar Evangelists and Bluesmen 1927-1944 is centered all around gospel guitarists -- which, by all means, is nothing groundbreaking as far as a collection of early recordings is concerned, but where Fremeaux & Associes ups the ante is in the care they've put into piecing these particular tracks together. The two-disc collection is one of the few where Blind Joe Taggart, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sleepy John Estes, Skip James, Kid Prince Moore, and Memphis Minnie actually appear side by side, which makes it a fine set of songs for any collector of early recorded music. "GOSPEL" Vol. 1 - NEGRO SPIRITUALS/GOSPEL SONGS 1926-1942

The first volume of gospel recordings on French label Fremeaux & Associes, titled Gospel, Vol. 1: 1926-1942, is a fantastic collection displaying a wide variety of artists, from the famous (Louis Armstrong's lovely a cappella version of "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen") to the obscure (Arizona Dranes' jaunty "I'll Go Where You Want Me To"). The great deal of care that was put into the selection and sequence of this two-disc set makes it a standout among other labels issuing historical recordings in that this set is a nice listen from start to finish. The following two collections in Fremeaux & Associes' gospel series parallel this one in terms of the timeline but are slightly more focused thematically. (Allmusic)trax CD 1:

"COUNTRY" Vol 2 - Country Gospel 1929-1946

Country, Vol. 2: Country Gospel 1929-1946 is another volume of early recordings exploring the roots of American music put out by French label Frémeaux & Associés; but where most of their other collections focused on early black spirituals, this one focuses on white artists such as Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and the Carter Family. Again, Frémeaux & Associés has put together a nice collection focusing not only on the bigger names mentioned above, but also lesser-knowns like Carson Robinson, the Armstrong Twins, Molly O'Day, and Carl Story. As the collection's title suggests, this compilation is filled with country gospel, which tends to be less uplifting than the spirituals that found a home on the label's previous compilations. The music here occasionally takes a glass-half-empty approach to spirituality, such as in Jimmie Davis' performance of "There's Evil in Ye Children" and Molly O'Day's "The Drunken Driver," which evokes the dark Bible belt impression of the Southern United States and parallels the arc of murder ballads associated with the same place and time in U.S. history.

The Frantic Five "On The Move" 2007

It is really worth-mentioning the fact that Greece's "Farfisa Kings" THE FRANTIC FIVE from Thessaloniki, keep going with a new album (their second studio one) after 13 years of their presence in the garagedom!!! They are, probably along with the fabulous Thanes from Scotland, one of the very few bands of the genre that keep the faith! "On The Move" is the follow-up album after last year's live CD "A Go-Go At A Cave Near You" on INKA Records! Great compositions, well-structured instrumentation and awesome production in combination with a "lost-in-tyme" artwork make this effort by far their best! Their now-sound can be described as "retro neo-garage", based on the legacy of the best groups of the 60's punk Era and the most important revivalists of the 80's and 90's, since the majority of the groups of the genre today sound with an obvious distorted orientation. Thus, it is not only their Farfisa dominated sound that rules inhere but overall, an appreciation attitude towards the originators. "The Brood" is the album's opening track, a great instrumental tune with references to the B-movies atmosphere of the mid-60's! Way-cool fuzz-punkers will follow such as "Why She'd Ever Leave", "I Live In Hell", "You Made Me Cry" and the self-titled "On The Move". A New England mood you can feel by listening to "How Can We Go On" whilst "Treat Me Kind" is truly a melodic number and "So Sad" reflects the band's folk punk influences. "Away From Your Lies" brings to mind the Wilson Pickett's classic "In The Midnight Hour" and "I Can't Wait Till Friday Comes" recalls The Pretty Things and The Tell-Tale Hearts! "I Got A Girl" is the swinging moment of the album which closes with an excellent cover of Kit & The Outlaws' "Don't Tread On Me". Listen to THE FRANTIC FIVE's brand-new stunning album and you will surely wait to their next step!!!
