"Lou Beatty’s DETROIT SOUL" Thirty Rare Gems From The Vaults Of La Beat Records

Ask any soulie, dancer, collector or dealer to name a city closely associated with the scene and most would probably say Detroit first. Ask them to name a label from Detroit and La Beat would be near the top of the list. Both are synonymous with the scene and deservedly so.
This release from Grapevine is in the opinion of many long over due and rightly deserves a lasting tribute to the joy the label has brought to many soulies for over 30 years.
One look at the people involved behind the scenes at LaBeat, its subsidiaries Mary Jane, Coolschool and Rambler and also Lou Beatty’s early collaboration with James Hendrix and his Carrie Label….Fred Bridges, Bobby Eaton and Richard Knight writing team, Curtis Trusel and John Mills, not just writers but part of the in house production team/musicians The LPT’s, Melvin Davis involved writing and of course the famed Mike Terry to name but a few, you just know you are in for a treat!!!!
The CD kicks off with the ever popular dancer from Edward Hamilton “I’m Gonna Love You” (the flip “Call Me” features later in the cd). Edward is represented several times the soulful “My Darling Baby” with the Natural Looks and of course with the Arabians with the superb and vastly under-rated and definitely underplayed “Thank Your Mother” and lastly with the all time classic “Baby Don’t You Weep”…Northern Soul just doesn’t get any better…or does it!
Al Williams is probably the name most associate with LaBeat. First played at Wigan although not what you would call a typical Wigan sound, “I Am Nothing” personifies just what the scene is all about, Rare, obscure and above all a dancer. It has remained out of reach for most collectors not just because of it’s rarity but also it asking price of £2500 plus. The flip the soulful midtempo “Brand New Woman” also features on the cd and rightly so in my opinion it probably deserved a release of its own. Cheaper but not by much is the later release on Palmer.
Al Williams other recording for the label remained in the can but have at long last seen the light of day and it was well worth the wait. A ballad called “She Does It” and very good it is but it’s the dancer “Try Them” that will appeal to most I guess and rightly so….due for limited release on Grapevine 7” I can see this one taking off and becoming a firm favourite with crowds up and down the country once one or two DJ’s get behind it..
Another LaBeat release that went on to gain legendary status at Wigan and still as popular to this day is “This Won’t Change” from Lester Tipton, his solitary release for the label. Again this fills all the criteria needed to make it a Northern Soul classic, the intro instantly drags you to your feet making you want to dance with Lester still saying he still loves his girl and things won’t change, despite the hurt she’s caused. Again an asking price of £3000 plus puts this way out of reach for most collectors plus the fact it’s as rare as the proverbial rocking horse s***!
The Masqueraders although pretty well known for their musical output and many discs that have gone on to be scene classics are pretty much soul superstars to UK soulies due to their recent live performances over here during the last couple of years. “How” kicks off their input to this cd and the track has become very much sought after in recent times and gained a high asking price a price considered ridiculous by some. On listening you can see why its coveted by collectors and DJ’s…perfect Northern. Personally I prefer the driving “I Got The Power”, also considerably cheaper as well! If you prefer your soul that bit grittier with a bit more bite then “I’m Gonna Make It” will be right up your street. The mid-tempo lovers won’t be disappointed either with the inclusion of “Be Happy For Me”.
Clifford Binns with his Carrie outing “You Got To Help Me” rightly deserves it’s inclusion, a firm favourite in the mid 80’s during the Stafford era the disc has received some re-activation in recent times.
James Shorter and Don Hart, two friends who as well as being a double act also recorded individually. James Shorter’s “Modern Day Woman” is probably the best known by him. As soulful as they come and becoming very much in-demand and probably more so after the release of the cd. The flip also represented on the cd, “Getting Ready For The Heartbreak”, more of an up tempo dancer make this a highly collectable double sider, watch the price rise!! Don Hart best effort in my opinion is his Cool School release the delightful mid-tempo effort “I’ll Keep Holding On”. The track hasn’t had the recognition it deserves in my opinion and hopefully that will now change.
Nelson Sanders has two releases included on the cd, “This Love Is Here To Stay” and “Mojo Man” suit those who love the more R&B;/funkier sound while his “I’m Lonely” and “Tired Of Being Your Fool” are two great ballads.
Not too be outdone by his artists, Lou Beatty chips in with his version of the Masqueraders “A Family” and the previously unreleased “Wet Pillow”.
With the inclusion of the unreleased instrumental of “I Am Nothing” there’s pretty much something for everyone on the cd, deep to dancer, ballad to mid-tempo to R&B.; You also get the added bonus of a pretty good read whilst listening from the comprehensive sleeve notes from Dave Welding!
LaBeat, although just a tiny label in Detroit’s thriving music scene of the 60’s and what would be considered a commercial failure, has played a large and influential part in the history of Northern Soul and with this release a small band of musicians and artists have at long last had all their efforts recognised and hopefully they will at long last reap some reward for their efforts. - Karl “Chalky” White, June 2006

The El Caminos "Reverb Explosion" 1997

"The El Caminos hang ten to a surf sound so authentic you'd think they must have been conceived in Huntington Beach, California, 1962...A slammin' collection of cool covers and classic sounding originals... Great new stuff." - Chris Gill, GUITAR WORLDJapanese surf band the El Caminos are quite a surprise. The cover of Reverb Explosion!, which shows the band cavorting with guitars while a city burns and topples around them, promises a wild ride. And it delivers, more or less. Like most surf records, it's kinky, fast, and lots of fun; however, the cover art and the novelty of the band being Asian are probably its biggest distinguishing characteristics. That's not to say that the El Caminos aren't good, because they are: Japanese themes mingle with wild west shootouts and car chases, voices cackle, and guitar wizardry abounds. Overall, this is an aggressive Del-Fi debut that should make surfaholics proud. Non-fanatics, though, would probably be wise to borrow it from a friend. ~ Jim Smith, All Music Guidetrax:

THE BIRDWATCHERS "South Florida's Birdwatchers 60's Sounds"

This long-lived group from Tampa, Florida produced mainly highly-derivative beat/pop fare, though enjoyable nonetheless. They recorded under several other assumed names, including two 45s with Duane Allman as The New Rock Band. The 1980 retrospective LP collects most of their 45s from 1965 to 1967. The version of Mary Mary here is a different version to the 45. There's also two cuts - Hey Schroeder and Can I Do It - which the compilers imply were not released, but these could be the unconfirmed 45 No. 10 above. Some copies of the Mary Mary 45 come with a paste-over label where the title is given as It's To You That I Belong. Ordered by a Miami radio station because of perceived marijuana connotations, this 45 variant is known as a "WQAM copy".A Bobby Puccetti composition, Heard You Went Away, was recorded by the Proctor Amusement Co..Joey Murcia went on to join Magic whose rare LP Enclosed has seen a reissue. Spirit fanatics should note the cover of Mr. Skin on the Geminix 45.Sam Hall, who joined the band in 1966, was previously in The Mor-Loks and The Trolls. He became a Christian in the late sixties or early seventies and later toured as Sammy Hall and The Sammy Hall Singers. Jerry Schills was previously with Milwaukee's Legends. The Birdwatchers:

THE PREACHERS "Moanin'" - Howlin' L.A. 60's Garage Rock!

Here is the entire output of The Preachers (and their later incarnation, JOHN ENGLISH & THE LEMONDROPS). This LA area '60s punk band is best known for their scoarching version of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" which appeared on an early volume of Pebbles. The band had the total punkish sound, lyrics and image. They even wore preacher suits -- pretty brave for 1965! This pounding slab of '60s insanity finally gives justice to one of the toughest sounding garage bands to come out of Los Angeles.trax:

"LET'S COPP A GROOVE!" Lost UK Soul 1968-1972

A collection of rare groove singles, a fusion of northern soul, classic soul, & reggae recorded & released in the UK, mostly by UK artists, by the Beacon label."Lost UK Soul - 1968-72". See this as the label compiler of the Beacon label, a small indie ran by one Milton Samuel. The "lost" part of the title I'm not sure I can explain, I mean, were these songs ever found? It's not really you'll find massive hits on this CD but I didn't grow up in the UK at the time, of course so I don't know. The "UK" part is correct in that the label was based in the UK but the CD features non-UK artists too. And finally, the "soul" is fitting but you'll hear it in different incarnations, smooth and rough, commercial, and bit funk here and a bit reggae there; the '68 to '72 time frame tells you what to expect.
Milton Samuel's real job was offloading large amounts of carbon paper to unsuspecting businesses, a practice called 'heavy sell' in which more carbon paper was sold than any firm reasonably could expect to use EVER. His passion was with music however and he started Beacon after he picked up a license for Ain't Nothin' But A Houseparty by The Showstoppers. It turned out to be the largest hit on Beacon and it's a shame it's not included on this disc. Anyway, Milton Samuel was some sort of character and it shows on this compilation in a great and diverse taste of music. The label went belly up in 1972, the masters were bought by a former associate and early 21st century they got out of the vaults again for this CD.
The music is diverse and pretty obscure, only if you dig deeper you'll find links to the better known world of music. The Showstoppers had some younger brothers of Solomon Burke in the band, The Clangers' organ was played by Jackie Mittoo (I read that on website somewhere), some tracks are written and produced by Eddy Grant and so on. It's not unique sounding but in my imagination this collection doesn't sound completely like a comparable American collection, I think the "UK" angle can be heard.
It's a reasonable neat package and the personal aspects make this a lovely release. The personality of the label owner but also the linernotes which consists of personal recollections by the guy who bought the masters and the former press officer of Beacon records. Buy it for the music though, the linernotes (the stories plus a few pics and song info) alone aren't sufficient reason. (Caesar Tjalbo)trax:

Eddie Angel "Eddie Angel Plays Link Wray" 2006

Eddie Angel is lead guitarist for Los Straitjackets, America's premier instrumental combo. He has been a devoted Link Wray fan for over 20 years. He learned to play Rawhide, Run Chicken Run and Jack the Ripper in the nightclubs of Washington D.C., Link's old stomping grounds. This is his tribute to the world's coolest rock-n-roll guitarist.Eddie Angel Plays Link Wray is essentially one master playing tribute to another. As guitarist and composer for "America's Instrumentalists," the Mexican-wrestling-masked Los Straitjackets, Angel has staked out his own (albeit more recent) livelihood and legend as a black belt of the form. Angel is both a guitar primitive and sophisticate, treating the instrument with an equal blend of reverence and irreverence. On his own and with Los Straitjackets (as well as the cavemen-dressed Neanderthals), Angel writes beautiful, wistful guitar instrumentals ("Pacifica," "University Boulevard") and also unleashes primitive, tribal, booty-shaking assaults ("Itchy Chicken," "Arula Mata Gali"). His own compositions and performances rival the best of his predecessors: the bright ocean rolls of the Ventures, the gentile twang of the Shadows, and (more to the point here) the snarling, jagged menace of Link Wray. Wray has been an important touchstone for Angel for decades, ever since Tex Rubinowitz first turned him on to the elder guitarist's boiling instros back in the early '80s, and it is Wray's complete rejection of established rules and institutions that have informed a lot of Angel's playing in subsequent years. (Angel also shared the stage with Wray numerous times in the '90s.) With the passage of the old master, Angel is the true inheritor of Wray's idiom. But listening to Angel pay tribute in his fifth decade, as a master himself, also makes clear the difference between the two players. Wray's aggression came out in his twangy, devil-may-care looseness; Angel has a more focused, tighter attack. You can hear that here on "Comanche." Wray's version, from Sundazed Records' Slinky! The Epic Sessions, is a limber, hip-shaking stroll, while Angel's take is a tough and aggressive fuzzbomb. On the other hand, it's harder to parse out the differences between the artists' versions of "Slinky," other than to say that Angel has a bit more mastery over his tone (which is cleaner), both in the studio and in live performances. Both, however, are masters of phrasing, and hearing Angel move through the power chords and scaled guitar figures of this track is like hearing him tracing his own six-string DNA. The bottom line is this: nobody plays Link Wray like Link Wray, but Eddie Angel is a true disciple. And hearing him put his own stamp on these compositions is instro manna from heaven, a crossing of generations -- and a whole lot of danger, sex, and menace distilled in a flurry of guitar notes. ~ Erik Hage, Rovi

"SOUL EXPLOSION" - Stax Soul

A landmark double LP collection of work from Stax Records – issued at the end of the 60s, after their split with Atlantic – and a real celebration of the new life that was coming to the label at the time! The range of work is really great, and the 28 track set moves easily from hits to more obscure numbers – in a mode that really shows the growing sound of Stax as the 70s approached. HANK PENNY "Crazy Rhythm" (The Standard Transcriptions)

Crazy Rhythm brings together 30 songs recorded for the Standard Transcription Service in 1951 and never released comercially until now. You get Hank's signature tune "Little Red Wagon," along with a grab bag of dancehall Western Swing, proto-rockabilly and a few ballads and novelty tunes thrown in for good measure. Although he never achieved the fame he deserved, Hank's music remains as a dazzling example of one of country music's unheralded greats. - AmazonIt's tempting to dismiss a man with three measly hits and a fitful career as a bit player in country-music history. Yet Hank Penny's music says otherwise. He was a mere 17 when he was captivated by the salacious Western swing of idol Milton Brown in 1935, and by the following year, he'd established his own outfit, the Radio Cowboys--the first Western swing band to take root east of the Mississippi River. His buddy Merle Travis convinced him to move to Los Angeles in the mid-1940s, and along with Bob Wills and Spade Cooley, Penny was a significant figure in that decade's vibrant Western swing scene. Yet, while Penny's combativeness seemed to keep him from the success that the other two achieved (though Wills and Cooley were hardly passive gentlemen), his bands were stylish, finely honed ensembles, more akin in sound to Cooley's polish than Wills's power, capable of moving from sharp jazz instrumentals to peppy novelties to pop standards.
Penny and crew recorded these radio transcriptions in 1951, and they boast the full range of the repertoire. Penny's mellow, charismatic crooning shows the influence that Brown still had over his style 15 years after he'd died. Penny's musicians, meanwhile, were wonderful, led by guitarist Benny Garcia and Penny's longtime pal Noel Boggs on steel. --Marc Greilsamertrax:

Eddie Angel "Eddie Angel's Guitar Party with the Panasonics" 1997

Los Straitjackets guitarista Eddie Angel recorded this pet project & issued it on the tiny No Hit label in the UK, then reissued it on CD in the US on Art Bourasseau's MuSick Recordings. The Eddie Angel's Dinosaurs's "Jurasic Beat" c/w "Caveman" single comes from this album. Over all sound is more garage than surf. Still, there's enough coolness and reverb in the tracks to please the most dedicated reverbivore. "Werewolf" is the great Frantics tune from the Pacific Northwest, covered more familiarly by the Ventures as "Fourth Dimension." With Eddie, simple progressions and very little melody doesn't mean boring. Eddie has always been able to carry off simplest non-melody tracks and make them shine!Los Straitjackets' guitarist Eddie Angel's solo outing offers an acceptably authentic homage to greasy instrumental 1950s rock & roll, largely though not wholly comprised of original material. Angel's biggest influence is the scratchy, distorted guitar of Link Wray, but there's also some grinding R&B roadhouse in the saxophone of Morrissey sideman Boz Boorer. Floating around in the mix are echoes of the surf era ("Kawanga") and tinges of exotica sleaze ("Casbah") and horror movie soundtrack creepiness. For all that, it doesn't have the menace or innovation of those old Link Wray records, though it has a heartfelt sense of fun. It's also hard to imagine any surf or instrumental rock band titling one of its songs "Topless Beach," as one of these tracks is named. ~ Richie Unterberger

"THE GOSPEL SONGBIRDS" Ring Them Bells (The Best Of The Gospel Songbirds)

Certainly no gospel collection would be complete unless it included this classic work of art. If you enjoy the old quartet style with deep harmony and tight mesmerizing sounds than this is one that surely you must get. The 1st four songs are just wonderful. I usually try to keep good things to myself, but this time I will make an exception. Out of the many gospel CDs that I own this is day in and day out my favorite. I can hear dem birds singin now. What a cd....What a CD, thank God for dem birds. (Amazon)On this Compact Disc you'll hear some REAL-TRUE-TO-THE-BONE Gospel Music recorded from 1962 to 1966 that will have your hands clappin' and your shoulders shakin'! If you're a fan of The Mighty Clouds Of Joy, and The Swan Silvertones (Vee-Jay Recordings) you'll be truly moved with the material found on the collection. Nashboro Records never originally released an Album on this group. There was MORE than enough recordings for 2 (Two) albums!, So I think it's safe to call this the 'Lost Album Of The Gospel Songbirds'. ALL of the songs are of great 60's Gospel quality especially "The Bible Is Right", "When They Ring Them Golden Bells", "Traveling Pilgram", "Let Jesus Lead You", "I Believe", and "I Love The Name Of Jesus'". 2 (Two) of the groups lead vocalists Otis Clay & Maurice Dollison (aka Cash McCall) who are both featured on the collection BOTH went on to become household names in the world of Deep Soul, R&B and Soul Music! On the down side...There is enough material left to release another collection of music on this great group. In fact they (Nashboro) could have included the Group's entire Nashboro Recordings! There was/is more than enough time left, so that is not an excuse! It almost a crime to only tease us with some recordings instead of ALL of their Nashboro Recordings. We'll probley never get the chance to hear these recording unless an overseas company steps up to the plate to do this! But in the meantime grab this A.S.A.P. because THIS IS OUT OF PRINT!!! "KRAUT! DEMONS! KRAUT!" - German Psychedelic Underground

This is the kind of compilation you can expect to flourish as the realization comes to pass that several types of special-interest rock cults will not be catered to by the CD explosion. There's no label or catalog number on it, but if you're in a big city or hip college town with a record store oriented toward specialty collectors, you might be able to find it. What we're dealing with here is rare Krautrock, some taken from private pressings that reached only into the three figures. None of these artists will be familiar, even to those who listen to college radio stations willing to play vintage Krautrock, with the exception of Can (represented by a 1969 single, on one side of which the band backed Margareta Juvan). This is actually more accessible than the more widely known, progressive rock-oriented style of Krautrock's salad days, as it bears a heavier influence of late 1960s psychedelia. The groups tend to draw from the more serious and instrumentally virtuosic side of that genre, with Floydian and Doorsian organs, along with some Hendrix-inspired guitar wangling and the denser, more impenetrable Teutonic experimentalism with which Krautrock is commonly identified. Less hip reference points like Jethro Tull and Iron Butterfly also rear their head from time to time. If Krautrock is your thing, raise the three-star rating above a notch; you'll have a hard time finding this elsewhere, and it provides a rather different slant on the style than you'll find in the Krautrock records that have become most famous. ~ Richie Unterberger, Allmusic

BIG MAMA THORNTON "The Way It Is" 1970

Big Mama Thornton was an outstanding singer who never quite got the recognition she deserved. She recorded "Hound Dog" before Elvis ever heard of it, and she influenced Janis Joplin to such an extent that Joplin covered Thornton's "Ball and Chain." The Way It Is, a live recording from 1970, is now available on CD; a good thing, because Thornton's rich voice, with its throaty, menacing growl, is something no blues fan should miss. The opening song, Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster," is slow and intense, allowing Thornton's vocals to reach full power; "Sweet Little Angel" is equally powerful. The medley of "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Mojo Workin'," two standards of the genre, works well despite the different tempos, and the traditional "Wade in the Water" gets an almost-rock & roll treatment that is oddly appealing. The Way It Is is definitely worth picking up, for a taste of what her live performances were like. --Genevieve Williams

"THE GIRLS CAN'T HELP IT" A Modern Girl Group Compilation (13 Swinging Hits From Today's Grooviest Gals) 1984

This most recent trend of American artists mining the sounds of vintage sixties girl groups inspired me to pull out Rhino Records 1984 all female compilation The Girls Can’t Help It. At thirteen tracks Girls is an inspired time capsule featuring, among others, Leslee Swanson, Tiger Lilly, On The Air, The Antoinettes, the Pandoras and the Dynette Set. An underground, new-wave, take on Phil Spector production and the Shangri-Las, the long out-of-print compilation is an excellent slice of pure ’60s pastiche. Bittersweet though, as, save for the two tracks below, I’ve since lost my copy. (Aquarium Drunkard)trax:

LORI BURTON "Breakout" 1966-1967

So you think the Shangri-Las were tough and streetwise girls? Well, you ain't heard nothing. The Whyte Boots 'Nightmare' takes the 'Leader of the Pack' scenario to the next level: a girl has been showing off the singer's boyfriend's ring, leading to a vicious catfight in which one of the girls is killed!! Woah! But in reality, the Whyte Boots did not exist, but were a construct of Brill Building hit girls Lori Burton and Pam Sawyer. Together they formed one of the better New York pop/rock songwriting teams of the '60s, although not too many of their songs were widely known hits. Their 'I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore' gave the Rascals their first chart entry; 'Baby Let's Wait,' also done by the Rascals, gave the Royal Guardsmen a hit; Patti LaBelle & the Blue Bells did 'All or Nothing'; Lulu and Cindy Malone did 'Try to Understand' and Prince Harold did 'Forget About Me.' Burton and Sawyer were briefly signed to Motown as songwriters and were one of the few (if not the only) female production teams on the New York rock scene in the mid-'60s. But Lori Burton was also a very credible blue-eyed pop/soul singer, who had a very good earthy voice, delivering both cool sensual low growling and impassioned rasp at the most climactic points. She began recording as a solo act for Roulette in the mid-'60s and in 1967, issued this album, Breakout, on Mercury. The LP has a cover showing Lori in biker chick/Cleopatra makeup breaking out (geddit?) of a barrier consisting of a huge Billboard chart. From the strains of 'Nightmare' to the thundering Northern Soul extravaganza of 'Gotta Make You Love Me' and 'There Is No Way (To Stop Lovin’ You)', what we have here is impressive, well-produced pop-soul with New York's sophisticated brand of pop-rock production. 'Since I Lost Your Lovin'' is the closest female impersonation of the Righteous Brothers you'll come across, and 'Bye Bye Charlie' does the same to early Neil Diamond, though Burton actually brings a more vibrant, emotional vocal quality to her vocals than Diamond did on such material. It is unfortunate that Lori did not have the chance to develop further as a recording act in her own right. This reissue of her 1967 album Breakout contains the mono single versions of three of the album cuts and, as a bonus track I have included the A-side of her only single for Roulette 'Yeh, Yeh, Yeh (That Boy of Mine)'. (Amazon & Allmusic)

THE BAROQUES "Purple Day" [The Baroques + Singles & Demos]

The Baroques were, simply put, Milwaukee's finest rock band of the late 1960s. Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Jay Borkenhagen, The Baroques produced two wonderful singles, Iowa-A Girls Name b/w Mary Jane in 1967 and I Will Not Touch You b/w Remember in 1968, all included in this wonderful compilation, as well as an excellent album, The Baroques, released on the Chicago based Chess label in 1967, the majority of which is included here. This fine disc is completed by the highlights of the further recordings by the band released on band's self-released lp Baroques demos. There are too many highlights to mention them all, but the disc is graced by two versions of their debut single, the hard-edged, finely tuned "Iowa, A Girl's Name" as well as two take on the humorously titled but seriously recorded "Musical Tribute To The Oscar Meyer Weiner Wagon." A further highlight is the band's 11 minute 48 second psychedelic masterpiece "Tangerine Sunset." How this band kept from breaking big is a mystery. The songs are well constructed, well executed, and there is certainly no filler to be found here. Their lack of success was perhaps due to the fact that their wonderful album was released on the Chess label, known mainly for its blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc. and was not a good fit for distributors who were perplexed by the psychedelic rock found on The Baroques. Had the album been released on a more suitable label this band may well have become legendary. The talent was there, the promotion wasn't. How tragic. However, this compilation is still available, though limited to only 1000 pieces, and Distortions has discontinued pressing cds, switching to vinyl only production. In other words, this cd will soon be completely unavailable. So grab this classic compilation while you can. If not you may never know what a jewel you have missed out on. (Amazon)trax:
