Ollie & the Nightingales "Stax 68-71: Ollie & The Nightingales"

This Memphis group included some excellent vocalists, although they didn't enjoy as much success as some other Stax artists. Ollie Nightingale (born Ollie Hoskins), Quincy Clifton Billops, Jr., Nelson Lesure, Bill Davis, and Rochester Neal were the original members. Billops had been in the Mad Lads. Their biggest single was "I Got a Sure Thing" in 1968, which made the R&B Top 20. It was also their lone hit. Nightingale left in 1970 and was replaced by Sir Mack Rice. Neal, Billops, and Davis became the Ovations in 1972. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music GuideAppetizing Southern soul by Ollie & the Nightingales, one of Stax Records' many poorly promoted vocal groups. These 19 tracks (from 1968-1971) come from the pens of some of Stax's most renowned songwriters, including Eddie Floyd, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Booker T. Jones, Al Bell, Homer Banks, and Mack Rice. Every singer that came through Memphis, TN, chomped a bit from Ollie Haskins' expressive style. A lilting rendition of "I've Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)" pricks nerves that are normally dormant; "I'll Be Your Everything" is quintessential Southern soul; they share a mic with Mack Rice on "Don't Let a Good Thing Go"; and "I Don't Want to Be Like My Daddy" (written by Haskins) puts some family business in the streets. While not a complete overview of Ollie & the Nightingales' career ("I Got a Sure Thing," their first and most popular Stax recording, isn't among the 19 tracks), it's a helluva start. (Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide)

"Kennedy’s Blues" - African-American Blues and Gospel Songs on JFK

Here's A Really Great R&B and Blues Compilation! Some Really Passionate & Raw R&B from The 60's.Guido van Rijn presents a compilation and analysis of the many blues and gospel songs written about the inspirational president.
Kennedy's Blues: African American Blues and Gospel Songs on JFK collects in a single volume the blues and gospel songs written by African Americans about the presidency of John F. Kennedy and offers a close analysis of Kennedy's hold upon the African American imagination. These blues and gospel songs have never been transcribed and analyzed in a systematic way, so this volume provides a hitherto untapped source on the perception of one of the most intriguing American presidents.
After eight years of Republican rule the young Democratic president received a warm welcome from African Americans. However, with the Cold War military draft and the slow pace of civil rights measures, inspiration temporarily gave way to impatience.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, the March on Washington, the groundbreaking civil rights bill--all found their way into blues and gospel songs. The many blues numbers devoted to the assassination and the president's legacy are evidence of JFK's near-canonization by African Americans. Blues historian Guido van Rijn shows that John F. Kennedy became a mythical hero to blues songwriters despite what was left unaccomplished.
Twenty-eight of the songs discussed in the text are available on a CD produced by Agram Blues (ABCD 2019) to accompany this book. Digitally remastered and featuring full liner notes by the author, the CD is a unique historical document of the Kennedy presidency.

"RED WITH PURPLE FLASHES" Vol 2 VA - LP

"I ain't no Mod, but Mod Music I dig! Such a sampler is very exciting because there aren't many Mod comps around...... You find bits and pieces of this swinging beat here, there and everywhere, but hardly ever a whole platter devoted to it (got to mention the awesome Doin' The Mod Vol 1 CD at this point, you need that!). Although this sampler is not really 100% Mod guaranteed, it's close enough. More than half of the bands are from the UK, but you also got recordings made in the US of A, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Israel (the only weak cut here, a cover of the American Breed's "Cool It").
Strangely the first two cuts are the least Mod of the bunch. Wishful Thinking's "Step By Step" is a nice bubblegumish number, while Act Of Creation's "Yesterday Noon Time" is more in Pop-Psych territory. But a lot of the Mod spectrum is to be found within the other sides. Johnny Deen's awesome cover of "Shotgun" stands somewhere between the Creation and the Artwoods. The other Wishful Thinking number ("Is She A Woman Now") is actually ala The Creation, while Jean-Pierre Messiera's exploitation style instrumental steals bits and pieces from the Artwoods' version of "I Feel Good". Patterson's People make me think of John Mayall '65 (before he became a blues wanker), and Action fans will probably dig the Groove's "Play That Song".
The Who are not forgotten with a pretty neat version of "Call Me Lightning" by the Good Vibrations and the Travel Agency tough popster "Come To Me". No Small Faces wannabees, but you'll find a bit of Trogg in the acid freakbeat "No-one" by Legay, some Easybeat among the Summerset's "What Are You Gonna Do" and one of the most fantastic - though the shortest ever - Yardbird style rave-up in the killer "Drollery" by the Fun Of It. My fave track is the classic " I'm On My Way " by the Lee Kings, but I guess everybody knows that one already. A pretty neat sampler indeed." - Laurent Bigot (Originally published in Ugly Things #19, 2001)traxfromwax:

I probably would've paid a full $15 for this great compilation. Luckily, Vagrant realizes that it's better the get the word out about their bands then to rip off everyone with insane prices. If you know one of these bands, more than likely you know about the rest of them. Saves the Day always puts out quality songs. Dashboard Confessional's contributions are classics. One from the latest album and another from the latest EP (Hands Down). The only bands on this CD that I've never heard of before Viva Death and Rocket from the Crypt. "JERK! SHAKE! AND VIBRATE!" VA

Ultra dancers on this fab 60's soul, boogaloo & R&B comp.Given the hot little groovers on here, it's hard not to jerk, shake, and vibrate when listening to this set -- as the collection's stuffed with loads of funky soul tunes! The package dips into the far end of the 60s indie scene -- going for obscure 45s issued on small labels that mostly never got proper distribution -- with a sound that's informed by the harder and deeper soul artists of the time, but carried off with a lot more energy and pure raw power than the acts that ever made it on the radio! CD version features 24 tracks in all -- with titles that include "I Do The Jerk" by Bil Pinkney, "The James Brown Bougelou" by Little Genie Brooks, "Mister CC" by Jim Pipkins & The Boss Five, "Let's Monkey Again" by The Persians, "Thread The Needle" by Al White & The Hi-Liters, and "Funky Funky Horse" by Lester Young & The California Playboys (Dusty Groove)

Billy Strange "Strange Country" 1966

"Hi Ryp, here's an odd one for you: Billy Strange, "Strange Country". It's a fantastic mix of lounge, country with a twang of surf thrown in for good measure. I have the liner notes for those that are interested, but my scanner has packed up so I won't be able to get them to you until later. In the meantime, hope you enjoy this CD! Cheers" - RussHerein lies one of the most aptly titled records to ever come out of Nash Vegas. Billy Strange's Strange Country is full of all sorts of sounds that would make producers on the underground tip go wild today. When it came out back in the '60s, no one knew quite to make of it, with its layers of 6-, 12- and even 8-string guitars, banjos, tambourines, maracas, and what not. Whether it was Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," or Barry McGuire's "Green Green," or even "Stranger in Your Town," these tunes were plucked, picked, strummed, and beaten out of acoustic guitars and other strings; mandolins played a role too, primarily as percussion instruments. This baby is psychedelic without meaning to be and is a bona fide weirdo classic. ~ Thom Jurek
Recorded in the 1960s (the liner notes do not specify the exact date), this was a sessionman supersession of sorts, also featuring Joe Maphis on banjo, Tommy Tedesco on second guitar, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums. Strange offers fluid, crisp instrumental interpretations of a mixed bag of folk and pop tunes, including not only "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" and "Green, Green," but also compositions by Lee Hazlewood, Jimmy Bond, and Rod McKuen. It's like a marriage of bluegrass picking with pop arrangements, and as of the late '90s was the most readily available recording of Strange's vintage work. ~ Richie Unterberger

ROBOCOP KRAUS "BLUNDERS & MISTAKES" 2007

I stumbled upon a previous album these guys created and enjoyed it enough to pick up this one. There isn't a single track that I dislike. I hope they come stateside in the near future! If you're looking for something different, give these guys (and this album) a try! Good job, fake boys! - Von Mr.Fonk (Offenbach/Main)
German - English translation:
Finally, there, the new album of the only actual Frankish Indieband of world-wide reputation. After the second drastic occupation change - this time in the bass - it was not certainly especially easy to swear the troop to a new album. However, Producer Tobias Levin has performed maybe just so here excellent work and has helped the Robos to a real jump after In front, to a real musical advancement. Where one still sounded clumsy earlier maybe, today one sounds polished where one was maybe overwound earlier, today one is filigree and gambled away. One hears a clear plus in harmony, in virtuosity and emotion variety." Blunders & Mistakes" lets forget the rather square-built LP "They think they are The Robocop Kraus", goes for 1 step back to the wealth of ideas of "Living with other people" and moves two steps in the matter of professionalism and Pop-Appeal forwards. Although one misses pedigree hymns and dance hall bombs, nevertheless, this album with the title track, "Blood on the pullover" and "Snake" has to show three high-carat hits in itself and, in addition, with "Ease the pain" and "Gibraltar" also balladeske, quietly to the pensive pieces which one would not necessarily have expected in this quality from the boys. The Rolling Stones "Between The Buttons" 1967 (Mono Edition)

The Rolling Stones' 1967 recordings are a matter of some controversy; many critics felt that they were compromising their raw, rootsy power with trendy emulations of the Beatles, Kinks, Dylan, and psychedelic music. Approach this album with an open mind, though, and you'll find it to be one of their strongest, most eclectic LPs, with many fine songs that remain unknown to all but Stones devotees. The lyrics are getting better (if more savage), and the arrangements more creative, on brooding near-classics like "All Sold Out," "My Obsession," and "Yesterday's Papers." "She Smiled Sweetly" shows their hidden romantic side at its best, while "Connection" is one of the record's few slabs of conventionally driving rock. But the best tracks were the two songs that gave the group a double-sided number one in early 1967: the lustful "Let's Spend the Night Together" and the beautiful, melancholy "Ruby Tuesday," which is as melodic as anything Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would ever write. - Richie Unterberger, AMG

Zeke "Death Alley" 2001

Blazing riffs, machine-gun drumming, screaming mad vocals... everything a truely great punk record should be made of. Tracks such as "Nightrider" and "Crossroads" show Zeke as a progressive outfit exploring new grounds with speed-metalish melodies and solos, whereas "Live Wire", "Eyes of Satan", and "Mountain Man" (among others) are reminiscent of the devastatingly headbangable likes of earlier Zeke albums.
Only two minor complaints: 1) Zeke really need to make longer albums, and 2) I liked Blind Marky's more raspy tone of voice he had on "Dirty Sanchez". He takes a slightly smoother approach here.
This isn't to say the album doesn't render weakling wannabe punk groups like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte utterly worthless, because it does. Buy it and rock on. - By Thgew (CA)trax:

Die Wiederauferstehung von RADIO BIRDMAN, STOOGES und MC5 ereignete sich in Toulouse! Aber warum kennt die keiner? Die JERRY SPIDER GANG jedenfalls steckt 90% aller Skandinavier in die Tasche, hat ohne Ende Groove und einen Gitarrensound, der so abgrundtieg dreckig klingt, dass man die Gedanken dessen, der sie spielt, gar nicht kennen will. The Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed" (Mono Edition) 1969

"Bruce here from AMG has all the info, I'd just be borrowing his words. 320 rip, tags fixed, artwork included. Enjoy! Next up, 'between the buttons' and 'around and around' in 320 mono." - ksnOn the basis of the numbers of copies that were pressed, the mono Decca Records version of Let It Bleed (which only existed in England) is probably the rarest of all the mono editions of the Rolling Stones' classic albums -- so rare, in fact, that its existence wasn't even on the radar screens of most collectors. Thus, the existence of this perfect bootleg edition -- part of a series of superb digi-pak style issues of Stones mono LPs -- doesn't merely save completists lots of money, but also many years of hunting. As to the release itself, this is the punchiest-sounding version of Let It Bleed yet to appear on CD, the original mono mix keeping the rhythm section all together instead of dividing the bass, drums, and percussion as the stereo master did -- "Live With Me," in particular, is a knockout in this edition, its pounding beat punched up all the more by the merging of the bass, drums, rhythm guitar, and piano (the VU meter on this reviewer's amplifier bumping away like a heart patient headed toward cardiac arrest); and the close sound to the mastering doesn't hurt, either. "Let It Bleed" sounds about as good as it ever has, the lead guitar nice and up front in the mix where you can make out every nuance of the playing. Indeed, fans of Keith Richards will have to hear this version of the record just for the way it showcases his playing, but in case that isn't enough, there are the bonus tracks (that bring this CD up to over 70 minutes' running time), which include "Gimme Shelter" as sung by Richards (as well as the ubiquitous Mick Jagger-sung version of "You Got the Silver"). Along with the chronologically related "Loving Cup" and "Sister Morphine," plus "Memo From Turner" and two different mixes of "Honky Tonk Women," the "bonus" section of this disc is pretty well as substantial as the official album portion, with embarrassingly good sound on its tracks. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

One Man Bannister "Moth" 2007

Matthew Bannister is best known for being one of the two songwriters in Flying Nun band The Sneaky Feelings. He also went on to front Dribbling Darts Of Love and more recently The Weather. After a break of many years, he is back with his debut solo album under the moniker of One Man Bannister. The title is Moth.Auckland singer-songwriter and sometime member of Don McGlashan's band Matthew Bannister made some of the most charming, slightly unnerving and genuinely lovely music with his Flying Nun bands Sneaky Feelings and Dribbling Darts of Love, and in my opinion never really got his dues.
He thought the same and wrote about his music and life in the Nunnery in Positively George Street. It's definitely worth tracking down.
As is this lovely solo album which finds him hunkered down in his house with guitar and recording equipment for a lo-fi and compellingly intimate album of 18 bitter-sweet but deliciously melodic songs augmented by layering of guitars and vocals.
Bannister is almost profligate with melodies and certainly gives those higher profile local albums (Goldenhorse, Phoenix Foundation, Brunettes) a run for their money in that department.
Moth is apparently the companion to an album (Aroha Ave) with his band the Weather to be released later this year. That is the "proper" album as it were -- a studio, produced by Ed Cake etc -- but in the meantime don't let this little gem pass you by. - Review courtesy of Graham Reid from Elsewhere

Eleventh Dream Day "Zeroes and Ones" 2006

"To be a band at this point," Rizzo said, "the process has changed, but the chemistry is the same."This year I was introduced to Eleventh Dream Day based on an enthusiastic recommendation to buy the re-release of Prairie School Freakout. I was pretty blown away by that (their first, sort of) album, so I had to explore more of their stuff. Next up was their latest, Zeroes and Ones, the subject of this review. I'm not sure if I like this better than Prairie School Freakout or not, because they're very different. Much has changed in the 20 years between the two records. Where Prairie School Freakout sounded like kids just jamming away in a garage (or barn), this one sounds like, well, adults doing the same damn thing, but without sounding like they're looking back or treading old ground in any way. I'm not going to go track by track, but this record is phenomenal. There is not a weak song on here, and everytime I listen I find a new favorite. "The Lure" will grab you right away. Later, you'll realize how amazing "Journey With No Maps" is. And "For Martha". And the other nine songs... A bunch of great songs, and perfect for a late night drive. If you love good rock music with edge, this is it. Eleventh Dream Day should be more appreciated. - By D. Cook (Massachusetts, USA)

Eleventh Dream Day "El Moodio" 1993

Eleventh Dream Day remains one of the most remarkable bands in the history of Chicago rock. Though today they are a part time band--core members of the band involved with other projects, in particular drummer-singer Janet Bean with the great neo-traditional country act Freakwater and bassist Doug MacCombs with a number of projects, though most famously with Tortoise--they have never ceased performing live from time to time and have continued to release albums every few years, including the recent and quite excellent ZEROES AND ONES. - By Robert Moore (Chicago, IL USA)Rick Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean, the husband and wife who anchor Chicago's Eleventh Dream Day, know all about domestic warfare. On El Moodio, they comb a battleground littered with damaged relationships, searching for specifics of what went wrong. "You threw the bottle against the wall/Motivated by alcohol," shouts Rizzo on "That's the Point," as the band thrashes wildly; the edgy "Makin' Like a Rug" features Bean's laconic tale of an abusive union ended by gunfire, concluding wearily, "Love is a one-way ride/No, you can't buy a ticket out."
While not every track on the quartet's third major-label outing boasts such startling urgency, the lion's share of the material reveals a knack for emotionally charged scenes, underscored by Bean's brusque drums. In a way, Eleventh Dream Day's thrilling eloquence comes as a surprise, because you've heard its tricks elsewhere. For starters, Rizzo's off-the-cuff vocals owe a heavy debt to Lou Reed and Tom Verlaine. And though Rizzo and fellow guitarist Matthew O'Bannon excel at scalding feedback ("The Raft") and pastel fantasies ("Honeyslide"), their fondness for Neil Young's ragged epics becomes a serious distraction. "Rubberband" carries affection to the point of mimicry, echoing the sound of "Cowgirl in the Sand" without approaching its dynamic sweep.
When they're cooking, however, influences don't matter. The brooding "Murder," for instance, unleashes an angry swarm of noise guaranteed to alarm the fainthearted. Proving once again that the root of great rock & roll isn't originality but spirit – and Eleventh Dream Day has passion to burn. - RS 660/661 JON YOUNG

Eleventh Dream Day "Borscht" 1990

Eleventh Dream Day's origins dated to 1981, when singer/guitarist Rick Rizzo met vocalist/drummer Janet Beveridge Bean at the University of Kentucky. Inspired by punk, Rizzo taught himself to play guitar with the aid of Neil Young's Zuma songbook; Young remained the group's major inspiration throughout their career, his incendiary aesthetic informing much of Rizzo's own raw, rootsy style. The couple soon relocated to Chicago, where they teamed with bassist Douglas McCombs and guitarist Baird Figi; after several years of honing their explosive live set, Eleventh Dream Day finally recorded their eponymous debut EP for the Amoeba label in 1987. ~ Jason Ankeny & Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
