Frankie Stein & His Ghouls "Monster Sounds and Dance Music" 1965

"Hey RYP, I was at a thrift store today looking for a costume, and I found this old monster rock n' roll LP in pretty good shape. I haven't seen you post this one, so I thought you might like it. Happy Halloween!" - Billy Ktraxfromwax:
1) Weerdo The Wolf (Twist)
Starts off with a howl & grooves you into the music of the Stein man himself. After the initial guitar strumin & organ that famous Frankie mouth harp kicks in. Followed by his trademark sound effects of bangs & screams, this is a timid tune in the Frankie collection, but a nice start. Do we imagine a whacked out werewolf wearing blue jean overalls dancing around to the music howling & laughing, then ripping out the throat of a victim near the end? I do.
2) Goon River (Swim)
Frankie starts off by growling ‘Lets Swim’ & as kids we probably did. More sound effects this time including some favorite whistles, pops & some bubbling liquid of the Goon River itself no doubt. At one point I imagine eyeballs being scooped out of some sockets. Yummy!
3) A Hearse Is Not A Home (Frug)
Dig that crazy sax while listening to a helpless young thing being stretched on the rack. Well at least that’s what I see. Ah that girl screaming, and these were for kids folks. Then one of my favorite sound effect. Those clanging metal things. Like something with large pieces of silverware getting ready to eat. Is that girl on the rack dinner? Don’t know but those screams at the end don’t sound too good.
4) 3 Little Weirds (Monkey, Lindy)
Picking up the musical pace here as the ‘little weirds’ start chattering away. I don’t know but I picture 3 little rats doing the chattering. Whatever they are they continue on as slipping whizzing sounds pop in now and again. The little laughs & giggles enter in & out & at the end three loud bangs of their rat doors close, or were those giant weights squashing them?
5) Lullaby Of Ghost Land (Fox Trot)
The coffin lid opens & my favorite Frankie tune begins. Don’t know why but I just love this one. I even used it as part of a stage show & produced. It just sounds sneaky & detective like, like something you’d hear in an old dark house mystery where ghosts are spooking the houseguests. A few whistles & cranky effects within including a mysterious laugh. Great sax & organ!
6) Knives And Lovers (Swim)
Side Two starts off with a few female screams and your basic sixties styled sounding tune kicks in. Lots of spooky laughing & more screams throughout, and some rockin’ guitar here folks. It really makes you want to get up & dance!
7) Little Ghoul Blue (Mashed Potato, Shimmy)
Ah, time to take it easy on this one. Things finally slow down & you can rest those feet. Whoever the main vocal talent on these LPs is really does some cool stuff. From the goofy or spooky laughing to the odd conversation like jibber here again makes these tunes priceless & in a place of they’re own. That juice harp comes in at the perfect time near the end. Yeah man can you feel it?
8) Ghoul Days (Watusi)
Sharing the same name as a ‘Dracula’s Greatest Hits’ classic a wacky whistle & some ghostly moans begin this cool beat. A swift little ditty complete with laughs, silverware, & agonizing moaning. Ends ghostly and sounds as if the spirit takes off in a plane or is that a buzz saw?
9) Little Brown Bug (Hully Gully)
Something is being twisted to death at the beginning of this thing (sounds like a duck bird) only to lead way to a stupidly simple tune by sax & organ. Ah but it does seem to contain everything here from silverware, screams, & more cranking sounds, and is that a train I hear at the minute mark? Just take it & enjoy it.
10) Neck Twist (Twist)
We’re on our way to wacky territory. Someone loves to laugh here as we hear large footsteps walking around. I imagine a Frankenstein monster groovin to the music. Again some killer sax here. A gentleman screams & some final laughs is a great way to end this first album of the great Frankie Stein. See you next time!

The GoreHounds "Halloween Everywhere" 1987

Gorehounds were formed in Portland towards the end of 1985. The band's first gig was at Geno's during Jordan's Undead 30th B-Day Party. The band used the "Electric Jug" sound like the 13th Floor Elevators did in the 1960's. They were a mixture of Punk Rock, 60's Garage, and 60's Psychedelia. In 1985-87 The Gorehounds place was known as THE GORE MANOR. Lots of punks, bands, and fans stayed there and partied. This was one hell of a wild and crazy time. Lots of broken beer bottles, dirty needles, pot smokin, crack stinkin, and rip roarin mentalness. In the winter the house was so cold that water used to freeze in the sinks and toilets. Rats were living in my couch. And the refigerator was not to be opened except for more BEER. there were punk flyers and grafitti all over the place. It was the best and worst of times. When we finally sunk it was to hit rock bottom... While the band was around it was an original act that played around the NE Coast and Canada as well. There was always a party after a night out at Geno's the hip place to hang for cool music then. Geno's is still around with live music.

"Monster Rock 'N Roll Show" 1990

This is a comp featuring monster or horror themed songs, with old radio commercials for horror movies in between the songs. Check out this CD it's better than Halloween itself!!!I'll keep it short and just say that everything here is classic and the audio commercials are fabulous. It would get 6 stars out of 5 if it were a 2 c.d set because there are many more of these old "monster" hits in addition to many sequels. Buy this c.d. if you can find it. Our family starts playing it a lot throughout October and it just gets better every year. Steve Hoffman, top tier engineer, remastered the songs for this collection so that they sound great too. - By G C. Todd "GCT" (Memphis)

The Route 66 Killers "Murder On Beaver Street" 2003

Route 66 Killers play a unique brand of cautiously optimistic music that occasionally verges on depressing, yet always fascinates and entertains. They write very good instrumentals with solid melodies. They have learned their three R's, playing with restraint, resignation and reverb. Both bands are highly original. - Phil Dirt at Reverb CentralThe Route 66 Killers were formed back in the year 2000, when four Russian serial killers met in a smoky ramshackle bar in the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, just off of Route 66. Having escaped a Russian prison in Siberia, they fled for the United States. All share common interests: murder, voodoo, and surfing. Soon they went on to terrorize the inhabitants of Flagstaff with a series of grizzly murders and zombie-style surf tunes. The local law enforcement has been powerless in the apprehension of the gruesome four, who continue to leave nothing but corpses and mayhem.
The Route 66 Killers consists of the scum of the earth: there’s Sergei, the ring leader of the gang. Sergei was a hit man for the Russian mafia, and carried out 42 hits in Moscow before his eventual incarceration. His weapon of choice is the lead guitar. Boris, hailing from St. Petersburg, was known as the "Nozhe" or "The Knife" in his home town, adding 20 people to his list of victims before he was apprehended. His weapon of choice is the bass. Ivan or Ivan Gryohznii (Ivan the Terrible) comes from the small village of Niledovo north of Moscow, where his massacre of the entire village caught the attention of the world. His weapon of choice is the rhythm guitar. And then there is the Animal or Zhivotnoye. Not much is know of his origins. Coming from some remote area in Siberia, the Animal brutally killed 19 people with his bare hands in a two year spree. His weapon of choice is the drums.
The music of the Route 66 Killers is dark instrumental surf. When listened to long enough, the listener/victim slowly and painfully dies. However, there have been reports of the deceased coming back from the dead and craving human flesh. It is assumed that this marauding gang of murderers currently resides in Flagstaff Arizona, the focal point of an ongoing manhunt since their arrival here. If you have any information leading to the arrest of these madmen, please lock your doors and contact the local authorities at once - The Flagstaff Times July 24th 2001

THE REDCOATS "Meet The Redcoats - Finally!"

The Redcoats were formed in New Jersey in 1964 and recorded an album's worth of material between 1964 and 1967 that ranges from beat to pop sike. The material sadly never saw the light of day due to a manager who did nothing to advance their career. 35 years later, Bacchus Archives comes to the rescue and releases this 12-song Beatles-inspired gem.traxfromwax:

Holly Golightly "Painted On" 1997

Holly's vintage, twangy sound has fast become a workplace favorite!Holly Golightly has more syllables than Jesus, and also more good songs. She is vastly beautiful, and the picture on this cover pays her no flattery. Her music is well-built and completely jammy. Discovering her for the first time at The Showbox is the one reason I'm glad I ever spent a year in Seattle at all. She is the guilty indie pleasure that I enjoy with very few peers here in Las Vegas, this town of Top 40 lovers. If I can somehow convince her to move here, I will make a radio station and let her make the playlist. - Reviewer: james capra (Seattle, Washington United States)

"El Primitivo American Rock'n'Roll And Rockabilly" VA 1993

Sometime, around 1958, a record by a character called Bill Parsons came out on the Fraternity label. it was really recorded by Bobby Bare but that's a whole other story......The title was 'All American Boy' and basically said it all. The first lines were" You get a guitar and you put it in tune / You'll be rockin' and rollin' soon / Riding around in a Cadillac / Fightin' the girls offa your back". These words were a call to glory heeded by young men across the globe with Sears guitars, cheap 15 watt amplifiers and a drummer with a van. They hastened to cut-price, two-track recording studios with dreams of Elvis Presley glory and some deeply strange misconceptions of what constituted a hit rock'n'roll record.
Part of the problem was that the great ones made it all sound so goddamned easy. Elvis's vocal power might have been intimidating, but the likes of Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran brought such a deceptive simplicity to their work that it was possible for thousands of kids with sideburns, burning ambition and no talent to convince themselves that they could do it too.
EL PRIMITIVO is a collection of some of the ones who tried it in Nashville, Tennessee, between about 1956 and 1964. With baritone slurs stolen from Elvis and hiccups looted from Buddy Holly, they came to town and did their worst. Mel Robbins on 'Save It' thought he could borrow the teen-in-heat panting from Gene Vincent's classic 'Woman In Love'. Herbie Smith attempted a really bad Elvis and Chuck Howard seemed to believe he could create a fusion of the Coasters and Eddie Cochran on 'Out Of Gas' but wound up with a manic piece of hybrid pop chaos. The Embers' juvenile delinquent vocals on 'I Walked All Night' (my particular favourite) might have made them the Stooges' uncles if only the fuzz box had been invented to drown out the backing vocals.
With the exception of Mel Robbins, who became a respected session pianist, none of these guys found fame or fortune. Most probably went home and bored the shit out of every bartender and cocktail waitress they met for the next 25 years with stories about how they almost made it in rock'n'roll. What they did have is the vital core of rock'n'roll, absolutely impossible to synthesise, sample or repLace. - Mick Farren, 1993

The Lava Rats "Surfing The Magma" 2004

The Lava Rats first "real" album, with 13 surf instros in their punk underpinned brand of dark surf. Some very good tracks here if you're looking for the underbelly of the curl. - Phil Dirt at Reverb CentralWith their distinct blend of fiery originals and razor-sharp covers, this trio of surf musicians has made a lasting mark. Some very good tracks here if you're looking for the underbelly of the curl. A fine damped reverb rhythm splashes forth a moody pluckster with a tropical disaster feel. The Rats will be appearing on compilation CDs both for LA’s Golly Gee Records and Spain’s OmOm records. This release is the culmination of a year’s worth of songwriting and months of trying out these songs in clubs up and down the California coast. Bill Bergstrom fronts the band, and his arsenal of guitars attracts almost as much attention as he does. Kenan O’Brien, the ever-solid bass player lays down the foundation for Bill to jump from, all while finding the darkest corner of the stage to stand in. The red-faced drummer is Taylor Still, an accomplished drummer and percussionist, who rounds out the band by providing the solid beat and his own flair, all the while driving the band with straight-ahead surf chops. - from: http://www.dwmmusic.com/trax:

Modern Lovers "Live" 1977

It must have been more than 25 years ago I listened to this album for the first time. It's one of these you must have in your collection. Songs like "I'm a little airplane" and "Icecream man" still lingered in my mind and over the years I trapped myself regularly I was humming or singing these songs when I was in a good mood. Now I can make every mood good! I put on this LP and the sun is shining again! What makes a great live album? A faithful reproduction or superior reinterpretation of a studio classic? Audience rapport? Great guitar solos? Fantastic new songs? All of the above? Have I got the album for you.
For post-Beserkley Chartbusters Jonathan fans, this is THE album to have. It kicks off with I'm a Little Airplane, which is available nowhere else. Until the applause kicks in at the end of the song, it is as tight as Jonathan's best studio recordings from the era. It's goofy lyrics (yes, he really is a little airplane), joined with fun riffs and a guitar solo so good that Jonathan requested a second one, result in a thoroughly enjoyable two minutes. The song immediately segues into audience banter where a heckler accuses Jonathan of wearing the same shirt for two consecutive nights. Of course, Jonathan objects! Fortunately, he is not thrown off form and counts into a version of "Hey There Little Insect" that is superior in every way to the studio version. If you don't know the song, it's everything its title promises. From there, the band moves on to their biggest hit, the instrumental "Egyptian Reggae." Doesn't this album sound fun already?
And I haven't even gotten to the marathon rendition of "Ice Cream Man" that closes side one of the old album. This is a far superior version to the studio recording that brings out all of the song's promise of waiting for the ice cream man on a hot summer's day when you were six years old. The fake endings of the song as the audience begs for more is the high point of the album and guaranteed to bring a dumb smile to your face.
Side two has a hard time living up to side one, but that's like saying side one of Abbey Road doesn't hold up to side two. Not much to complain about here. A guided tour to the land of dinosaurs, New England, South America, and Kookenhakens is more than most of us deserve. The final song, "The Morning of Our Lives," is so sweet-natured and kind; do the cynic inside of you a favor and give this song a listen. It will make you wish you never grew up.
All in all, this is my favorite live album by any artist. Jonathan's hero, Lou Reed, did well with "Rock 'n Roll Animal," but this is better. gitit and have a great time! - Steve Lanzarotta (California, USA)The Modern Lovers:

"Estrus 100% Apeshit Rock Sampler" Vol 2 - 2000 VA

TWENTY FOUR hairy palmed blasts of Grade A certified vine swingin' Esterolia culled from the most recent stash o' trash we've slid down the ol' r'n'r pole of late! Grab your head and watch it explode! Put on that dimestore apesuit and dance franny dance! You can't go wrong! The price is right, the music is ripe, and the Art Chantry penned cover is all ape, baby. Don't wait for the flies to come home, snatch up the brand new ESTRUS RECORDS 100% APESHIT ROCK SAMPLER (VOL. 2.) today and GO APE!While most bands on Estrus Records are often been accused of sounding pretty much the same (i.e., like The Mono Men), this budget-priced sampler proves that isn't necessarily the case. While all 24 acts on deck obviously subscribe to the philosophy of "the less slick, the better," there are plenty of different takes on the loud 'n' proud aesthetic displayed here - semi-retro garage rock (The Coyotemen, The Insominiacs), wild-ass punk (Fatal Flying Guilloteens, The No-Talents), messed-up blues (Soledad Brothers, The Immortal Lee County Killers), shoved-into-overdrive hard rock (The Quadrajets, The Nomads), and even a witty Rolling Stones rip from The Bobbyteens and a slice of Meters-style funk from The Crown Royals. Not for the meek, but if you like you like your rock 'n' roll fast, noisy, and with an extra portion of attitude, The Estrus 100% Apeshit Rock Sampler (Vol. 2) delivers a lot of bang for only seven bucks. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Thee Fourgiven "Salvation Guaranteed" 1989

THEE FOURGIVEN was formed out of the ashes of the Unclaimed. The '60s-influenced Thee Fourgiven consisted of members Ray Flores (bass, vocals), Matt Roberts (drums), and Bela Horvath (guitar), rising from the ashes of another similarly styled outfit, the Unclaimed. Formed in the '80s and owing a thing or two to such yesteryear Motor City rockers as the MC5 and Up, the trio issued several albums (It Ain't Pretty Down Here, Testify!, and Salvation Guaranteed), as well as numerous singles and appearances on compilations. The group split up in early 1989. ~ Greg Prato, All Music GuideThee Fourgiven:

The Synfonics "The Synfonics" 2009

"Hello RYP! I'm a guitar player and lead voc in Russian garage-rock / psych-pop band Synfonics. We just recorded an album full of cool tracks! The records session longs for two hours(!), all songs were recorded "live", all instruments and vocal were playing at the same time. The drums was recorded only with 3 mics, like in the 60's. The result is very raw and catchy sound, with lots of mistakes, tempo instability, but a real cool! Artwork included. Feel free to post it in your blog, and thanx for all your work!" - Fill

"Pulp Rock Instros" Vol. 1 VA 1995

Great instro music from the usa & europe, past & present the nonsurf tunes will expand the horizons of surf fans. one of the 2 or 3 favorite instro collections in my surf oriented music library. - By jeffrey j shorts (saegertown, pa United States)What I like about this CD is the unexpected range of the tracks, and the generally high caliber of the artists assembled here, especially considering that this CD spans 35 years if instros, and includes some seldom heard and never before legitimately issued rarities from master tapes. The Canary Sect "Shake It, But Don't Break It" 2006

Pero no son novatos, el grupo lo forman ex-Negativos, ex-Les Cactus, ex-Born Losers, y ex WalkinsonsHere's a brandnew band from Spain that will surely let the mods dance and the rockers roll. When Manuel Navarro and Pablo Jimenez decided to form the CANRAY SECT in Barcelona in the spring of 2003 to keep the spirit of truly authentic rhythm'n'blues alive, they never thought that this band would soon become the hottest beat sensation Europe has to offer these days.
The CANARY SECT combine the essences of traditional UK mid-sixties r'n'b, made famous by bands like the WHO, the DOWNLINER SECT, the SMALL FACES, the PRETTY THINGS and the BIRDS and the classic US soul and blues brilliance of legends like Howlin' Wolf, Ray Charles and John Lee Hooker and come up with a whole set of hip-shakin' beat monsters, recorded and produced at Circo Perrotti studios in Gijon by the 'wizzard of fuzz', Jorge 'Dr.Explosion' Munoz, which can all be found on their debut-album 'Shake it, but don't break it'. Driven by the wailin' harmonica of singer Manuel Navarro, the five-piece that consists of (ex)-members of some of the finest spanish garage-bands of the past 20 years, such as LOS NEGATIVOS, LES CACTUS, the BORN LOSERS and LOS WALKYSONS will be seen in action at an all-nighter near you shortly. Just listen to their incredibe version of the old YARDBIRDS raver 'Stroll on' and the stompin' beat of the furious title track 'Shake it, but don't break it' and you know what we're talking about. It will make you shiver, like it did when we first heard it. - from Soundflat

"NORTHCOAST KICKS" - Cool Surf Instros From Ohio's North Coast! 1996 - VA

"NORTHCOAST KICKS IS TRULY ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND BEST CD COMPILATIONS FEATURING NEW AND ORIGINAL INSTRUMENTALISTS. SO, NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER, GET READY TO ROCK, BECAUSE THE NORTHCOAST KICKS" - MERRELL FANKHAUSER.Brilliant set of 'Surf' instrumentals. Very classy stuff - well recorded and played. Lots of twangy, 'bendy' guitar sounds. Wonderful! When Jimi Hendrix spoke the words "You will never hear surf music again", little did he know that a few decades later he would be proven wrong. Today, surf music and instrumental music are back in a big way. It is heard in movie soundtracks and in radio and television ads. The spaghetti western and spy soundtrack is back, as is the hot rod and motorcycle style.
Instrumental music came back very strongly in 1994, and in 1997 we are still riding high on a wave of instrumental bliss that has circled the globe. It has spawned an entire new generation of instrumental bands and brought back many of the original bands from the early sixties back into the limelight. This CD is an exciting, fun filled blend of all of the above styles with so many great bands that it would take a book just to complete the information on their bios. - From the CD booklet
Cool Surf Insturmentals From Ohio's North Coast! The Surfaholics, the King Dapper Combo, and Ray Carmen are just a few of the artists surfing their brains outs for you on this collection of guitar instrumentals from America's heartland. Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways "The XFM Sessions" 2007

A great ending for the Buff Medways! The album - available on vinyl and CD - captures live performances by Wild Billy Childish and the Friends of the Buff Medway Fanciers' Association. Recorded at sessions and live at a club, thus splendid little record gives us a parting view of the what Billy Childish was doing earlier in this decade. That it sounds a lot like his bands that preceded and followed is irrelevant. In point of fact, many of the songs - as followers of Mr. Childish know - are recycled from one band to another with often undectable changes. And while the songs sound - ex crowd noise and some blather from the announcer on the club cuts - more or less like the orignal recordings, you must also realize therein lies the charm of the band.
The tracks include the four primary members of the band through its existence; Childish's wife Julie being the only one absent. It also includes Graham Coxon drumming on one track. As I said, a perfect end to the band. - By Jersey Kid (Katy, Texas, America!)

The Surf Lords "Shark Attack!!" 2003

These are true masters of surf guitar, and they can (and do) play anything they want - Surf style!Riding whammy & twang the Surf Lords cut o’er the waves of FENDER with gusto and the melodic ease of sunset. In these sunny waters there’s nods to spy and pasta westerns and they’ve sure got their Link Wray down, but surf with a capitol S is the wave of the day on this 15 track disc. Burt’s Tiki Tear Drop, Cleopatra, Shark Attack, and Bombay Highway are superb originals that make the Surf Lords a band to watch. From the easy Third Stone From The Sun to gorgeous moonlight and martinis Goldfinger the Surf Lords pick their covers well. There’s a fun Don’t Fear the Reaper and ropin’ the big sky Ring of Fire and then we find our happily shakin’ butts in a conga line for Conga meets The Little Drummer Boy meets Riders in the Sky – saddle up pars the trail’s about as much fun as you can have standin’ on two feet. The real stand outs here include Bombay Highway Part 1 and Part 2 [a pair of infectious 5 stars tracks if ever I heard one], Burt’s Tiki Tear Drop, Cleopatra and Goldfinger. 4 stars for this fine little gem. Filled with CRUNCH, whamm~y, tw!ang, diStoRtiOn, r-i-f-f, humor and a knack fer melody, the Lords got it all! So what are you waiting for, check out the fine samples and get surfin' with the Lords! - Joe Pulver

Thee Headcoatees "Ballad of The Insolent Pup" 1994

If the Spice Girls went punk, they might have turned into Thee Headcoatees. The line-up was Holly Golightly, Kyra LaRubia and Ludella Black. Bongo Debbie often performed songs with the band when they played live (she left in 1999).

"Instro Nation" - 21st Century Surf Sounds 1995

"I was contacted in 1995 by tower records japan ('orange records') to assemble a surf instrumental compilation of contemporary bands. I got bands from all over the usa for these tracks, and wrote the liner notes (which I forgot to credit myself for on the cd!). I really think that these tracks represent the best that surf instrumental music had to offer at the time!! Sadly the label is no more, but many of the bands still are..." - By DAVID ARNSON (Los Angeles)Instro fans, hear me now! Get this CD as quickly as you can! There are 15 tracks by 15 bands, and even though you may find yourself wondering where Man Or Astro-Man or Impala went, the talent on this disc is very much from the top of the pool.
The Insect Surfers' Dave Arnson wrote the liner notes, and his band contributes "Stingray" to the project. Every song in the collection is top notch. This CD is also a great introduction to several bands that are somewhat newer to the scene, such as Death Valley, Pollo Del Mar, Galaxy Trio and Satan's Pilgrims. On top of that, you get some great stuff from established bands like The Mermen, Davie Allan & The Arrows, The Boss Martians and Sultans Of Surf. The Hillbilly Soul Surfers offer a very unusual twist, mixing surf with a Stax/Volt inspired dash of soul.
The Volcanos, 3 Balls Of Fire, Shig n' Buzz, Boardwalkers, and The Reventlos all make their marks here as well. Instro Nation is outstanding from start to finish. The liner notes give short and informative bio's of the bands, including, in several cases, email addresses for contacting them. Most important of all, this CD will introduce a lot of surf fans to severa lesser known bands. Bands that aren't going to be "lesser known" for long, because this CD is readily available to the masses. I bought this one at Silver Platters, a Seattle CD store that puts Tower Records to shame, both in volume and diversity. If I could happen across it, so could Joe Public. I predict Instro Nation will bring in a lot of new fans. - DJ Johnsontrax:

The Greenhornes "East Grand Blues" 2005

A lot of folks will likely hear of this group when they open for the White Stripes on their 2005 tour and that's a good thing. Live, the Greenhornes kick up a tasty garage rock sound that is a good match for the Stripes, but a bit different from what you'll find here. This EP is a nice little gem that swings from Beatlesque pop to scruffy garage rock, sometimes in the space of the same song.East Grand Blues EP exhibits the full versatility that The Greenhornes have to offer. Their music is a mix of modern day pop and alternative rock with a `60s feel to it. Their songs are guitar-driven while also relying on the percussion to bring it all together and while throwing in a tambourine to really give it that mood of yesteryear. The melodic "I'm Going Away" gives off a vibe similar to that of The Beatles, showing their more pop-oriented side. "At Night" is a more alternative sounding song and is lyrically driven. "Shelter Of Your Arms" is a standout song on this EP; it has a darker feel with strong guitar riffs and a heavy beat showing that deep down, this band is all about the rock. - Stephannie Depa (Synthesis.net)

"Psycho Beach Party" Soundtrack 2000

"Let's go surfin' now, everybody's killin' now, come on a safari with meeeeee!"It's 96 degrees in the shade today in Boston, which is the perfect temperature to groove to the soundtrack of Psycho Beach Party (Unforscene Music). Featuring an original score by instrumental hipster Ben Vaughn (who scored big with his twangy score of the TV's Third Rock From The Sun) Psycho Beach Party is a chock-full of sand-in-your-toes tunes. The disc is bursting with reverb-drenched guitars, cheesy '60s organ fills, wipeout inspired drums and even a vocal or two.
The CD opens with the Vaughn penned tune "Main Title", which bears a striking resemblance to Los Straitjackets' "Caveman". The resemblance is not surprising since Los Straitjackets' drummer L.J. Lester bangs the skins on the soundtrack and is probably the man behind the ominous voice repeating the word "psycho" throughout "Main Title". While not an essential must-have instrumental CD, Psycho Beach Party does include some excellent tracks from some of the best of the instrumental bunch. Those masked rockers Los Straitjackets contribute the guitar gymnastics of "Tailspin" and "Tempest", which sounds oddly like ZZ Top's "Tush" as performed by a psychotic surf band. The ever-wacky Man or Astro-Man perform a rare vocal track, the British post-punk sounding "Mermaid Love". The Fathoms' "Overboard" has that spaghetti western feel while The Hillbilly Soul Surfers' '"Cha Wow Wow" and The Halibuts' "Night Crawler" are both excellent but don't stray far from the traditional surf sound.
The strong point of the CD is the film's original score by Ben Vaughn. Fans of his earlier work with The Ben Vaughn Combo or his solo discs will dig songs like "Chicklet Wipes Out", "Mournful Surfer", and the wonderfully titled "Romantic Beach Scene". The disc closes with Vaughn doing vocal duties on the hilarious "PSYCHO End Title" featuring the classic lyrics "There was a crazy beach party that was underway with lots of rockin' teenagers from the USA." Vaughn is definitely becoming the mayor of instrumental city and its Hawaiian shirt clad residents will surely appreciate Psycho Beach Party. - by David Sakowskitrax:

Holly Golightly "My First Holly Golightly Album" 2005

Holly's first compilation featuring 17 hand picked tracks from her extensive back catalogue. 7 are taken from old DG albums, 8 are re-recorded exclusively for this album. If you've seen Holly live then you'll know all the tracks here.I wouldn't normally review a greatest hits album, because naturally they are good. If you haven't heard Holly Golightly before then this compilation of hits would be a good introduction. She is quite unique in her genre of music. Very few Women have been successful when it comes to writing and recording hard electric blues. But Holly's light gravely voice suits the style wonderfully.
With ten albums under her belt she has a huge selection of songs to pick from, spanning ten years of hard work. The tracks here show how her sound has evolved, from bluesy garage rock through to alt-country blues, with the odd folk song in between. They run together on this disc beautifully and before long you will be singing along. This is great as an introduction, but I would recommend buying one of her studio albums. - Reviewer: Nick Fulton (Wellington, New Zealand)
