Andre Williams "The Black Godfather" 2000

Man, I love this record. It's the voice. I could just about care less as to the indie rock credibility he's gained by playing w/ Blues X, Compulsive Gamblers, etc. and with the Beck-like production to boot. The godfather sings like he is quite literally losing his mind. He screams like he wants the devil to come out of his body. Imagine Joe Cocker in the body of Howling Wolf on some major amphetamines in a padded room. Simple arrangements with nods to punk, surf, metal and soul permeate the background for Mr. Williams, Esq's blow torch vocals, intimations on adultery, drug-dealing, stripping, and just being a godfather. One last thing, play this album late at night with an equal amount of drunk men and women in the same room. Fun. - By Yalu Jenkins

Andre Williams w/Diplomats Of Solid Sound "Aphrodisiac" 2006

Men, let's keep Andre Williams week going on:With a mind-boggling 50-year career in the music business, 70-year old Andre Williams is showing no signs of slowing down. The original rapper and R&B; performer returns to his soulful roots on "Aphrodisiac," enlisting the 'Diplomats of Solid Sound' as his backing band on this diverse an adventurous offering. Hints of blues, rock, R&B;, rap and soul fill the grooves of this release that flows seamlessly from start to finish. Andre's voice never sounded better as he tackles topics ranging from alcoholism (I'm Not Worthy), Hurricane Katrina (Thee Sisters), rejection (I Can See), and love (Do You Remember). But it's also a fun, masterfully produced album that will transfix both past Andre fans and new listeners. Recorded in Iowa City, this is the real Andre…the real deal…from the 'Black Godfather.' (From Pravda Records website)
Ready to shake to the morbid atmosphere of this sound? I particularly like the duet "prove it to me". There's also a tune about the hurricane Kathrina.

Andre Williams "Rhythm and Blues!" 2004

"He spoke to his audience long before the disco generation learned to rap." Andre's special language has never gone out of style.Happily, Andre is once again the epitome of health, a recent court case has seen him finally awarded royalties from his most popular composition "Shake A Tail Feather" - a 1963 hit for The Five Du-Tones, memorably featured in the films "Hairspray" and "The Blues Brothers" - and he is currently once again electrifying crowds around the world, thanks to the acclaim garnered by such staggeringly sleazy albums as "Silky", "Red Dirt" and "The Black Godfather." The Fuzztones "Teen Trash" vol. 4: From Los Angeles, CA 1993

Compiled as part of Music Maniacs' Teen Trash series which showcased several 80's garage bands from Europe, this collection features B-Sides of singles, all of which had never been previously released on album or CD. If this album was ever reviewed, we were not aware of it. - from: http://www.fuzztones.net/discography.htmRudi and "Mad" Mike move to Los Angeles and reform the Fuzztones. Ironically, two of the new members are former New Yorkers. This line-up recorded In Heat, which was produced by the legendary Shel Talmy, and was the only 80's garage band to land a major label deal. Their high energy stage performance and testosterone-driven off-stage antics earned them the nickname, "The Paisley Pussy Posse."The Fuzztones:

Andre Williams with The El Dorados "Greasy" 1996

All hail Andre! Hep, hep! "Every bit as suggestive as his Fortune label sides. Synthetic soulos beware, GREASY is sloppy fat and all that." - NOWThe fact that he managed to resurrect his career in the mid-nineties with a spate of recordings, including the album "Greasy" (on Norton), is a credit to his determination, and the excellent support he has had from people such as Jon Spencer, and Billy Miller & Miriam Linna at Norton Records. In fact, Williams now lives in Queens, New York, and has released more records since his comeback than in the first 40 years of his career! In 1999, he even satisfied a lifetime ambition by making a country album for the Bloodshot label, and has continued his habit of collaborating with the most diverse artists, including the El Dorados, the Sadies, and Dick Taylor (ex-Pretty Things guitarist). Andre Williams "Bait & Switch" 2001

"...Raw, R-rated shizznit... filled with grungy, one-take production and plenty of Williams' lascivious personality..."Another irreverent, punkish set from the king of sleaze rock, Bait and Switch contains almost no surprises for fans of Andre Williams' predictably wild and raucous R&B. Backed by a garage band featuring the aggressive guitar of Matt Verta-Ray and the greasy, growling tenor sax of Lonnie Youngblood, Williams belts his tales of double-standard misogyny with the same enthusiasm as his early singles back in the 1950s. Fans of music that denigrates women will find "Sling It, Bang It and Give It Cab Fare Home" appealing, but Williams also goes far enough to balance the tables with the hilarious "Put That Skillet Away" (his lover is not cooking with it, but threatening to beat him). Long-lost brother to the late Screamin' Jay Hawkins or thug rapper born 40 years too early, Williams is still a treasure of the American rock underground. ~ John Duffy, All Music Guide

THE SQUARES "Squarification" 1995

5th and final Lp by this great Medway influenced band from France. Produced by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios.Despite the French government's curious attempt to legislate cultural isolationism, there are now officially two good bands in France: Les Thugs, of course, and this quartet. But there's nothing new in the garage these guys call home—a heavy debt to Billy Childish is evident throughout, and the Squares flirt with plagiarism on tunes like “Believe” and “Kick Me Out.”
Still, the Squares aren't content to simply mime the current garage-punk trend (no entering its 33rd year, by the way). This band pays snarling, snotty respects to the guys who couldn't play and didn't care even before that was hip and postmodern. “Baby” and “You've Won” are as good an “I Need You”-era Kinks burn as you'll find this side of “My Generation,” while “I'm Going Home” (not a Sonics cover) wouldn't be out of place on a Crypt Back from the Grave sampler. And the tom-tom–heavy title track—with its sensitive cannibal's refrain “Mmm, your eyeballs taste nice”—is sillier than anything the Trashmen ever pondered. — John Pecorelli - Alternative Press magazinetraxfromwax:

THE SQUARES "Tribute to the Medway Scene" 1993

Some of the best Medway-sounding Garage came from France with The Squares. This was their 3rd LP, recorded at Toe Rag Studios with Liam Watson. Great stuff! With the Squares, it's like playing at home. Going out and ten minutes later, see them live in town. The Squares mean for me the P'tit Zing headquarters with Dédé behind the counter. It means the concerts in a place we miss, the rehearsals with the guys of the band "Panik" in the next room.
The influence of the Headcoats on their stuff is real, but they shouldn't be reduced to the label "French Headcoats". They have a bigger debt to the whole Medway scene, to which they will dedicate an entire album. The only time we saw Billy in Nancy was at the P'tit Zing with the Squares opening for the Headcoats. And all was said.
The Squares, 3 guys : Nick (guitar/vox), Stanley (bass) and Oli (drums) who toured in the whole country (with a crash for every van they had on tour, rock'n'roll attitude !) and abroad. The Crawdaddys "5 x 4" 1980 - EP

still steamin... THE CRAWDADDYS!In a time of trendy discotheques, bombastic arena rock, and sonic punk barbarisms, the Crawdaddys were truly a peculiarity of the late '70s. The Southern California four-piece rhythm & blues combo, led by two gifted songwriter/guitarists, Steve Potterf and Ron Silva, who began in the similar garage band the Hitmakers, shrugged off all present scenes and regressed to the past, to a Mersey-era Beatles style...

... Influenced by '50s R&B masters like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, the Crawdaddys jump-started their own California garage rock scene, which spread widely in the early '80s as more illustrious groups like New York's Chesterfield Kings and London's Barracudas also hiked their guitars up to chest level. Other influences, like the Yardbirds and the Velvet Underground, can be heard in the Crawdaddys' surprising yet sincere sound.
Potterf left the group after recording the first Crawdaddys' first LP, leaving Silva as head Crawdad. Unfortunately, the group's sound took a slight dive in aggression level as a result. ~ Matt Carlson, All Music Guide

The Crawdaddys offer a precise account of 1960s R&B with appropriate versions of John Lee Hooker's "Let's Make It Right Now," and Willie Dixon's "Tiger In Your Tank," and Chuck Berry's "Oh Baby Doll."The Crawdaddys:

THE DOWN-N-OUTS "Subterranean Beat Punk Blues" 2000

The Down-n-Outs are a genuine garage band with Vox guitars and organ...... The record even says it’s recorded in fabulous mono (I’m pretty sure it’s recorded in stereo). All the songs even remind me of a simpler time, when all you had to worry about was teenage love gone wrong. "Set Me Free" starts off with some cool organ and has an extra long intro. As a matter of fact, you think it’s gonna be a instrumental until Micheal Daboll comes in and sings one verse screams and has a screaching guitar solo outro. "Ain’t Got You" is a nice piece of straight ahead rock ‘n roll. It has a great harp solo. "Yeah" is a slow burner that starts off with a fat fuzzy riff and then has that organ kick in. It reminds me of the Fuzztones. My favorite track is "I Saw A Girl." It has a jangly riff and a cool chorus, "I saw a girl. I saw a girl. I saw a girl and I wanna make her mine." It comes in at a punk rock length of a 1:30, they nail the song and shut the hell up. This is a cool garage punk record. If you dig the stuff from the Crypt’s "Back From The Grave" series, you’ll probably dig this. - cyclops marktrax:

A Nonkonformist less...

Willy DeVille R.I.P., 1950-2009
Friday, Aug. 7 2009 @ 10:24AMPunk rock soul man Willy DeVille has died of pancreatic cancer in New York at the age of 59. Though his band Mink DevIlle was more bluesy, swinging and sometimes Springsteenesque than most of the groups that congregated at CBGB back in the glory days, he fit comfortably amid its grunge, and glittered in it. He wrote some extraordinary songs and sang them with deep feeling, yet despite this (and an Atlantic Records contract) never had a breakout hit (though he did place a song on the soundtrack of The Princess Bride, for which he received an Academy Award nomination). He was big in Europe, though, and among his fellow musicians (Jack Nitzsche said he was the best singer he ever worked with). DeVille went through all kinds of mess, including his wife's suicide, a car wreck that left him hobbled for years, Hepatitis C and cancer. You might say this is sort of thing that would teach a man the blues, were it not so clear in his music that he had them bone-deep from the start. - from: forum.rollingstone.de

alphish said: Many thanks for remembering Willy. I am currently near New York City, where he die last night. It's somewhat "funny" that Willy was/is more popular in my country (Holland) and yours (Germany) than over here. Anyway, here is a great radio broadcast of a concert in Bremen last year (2cd with artwork; no password):

Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation "Spread The Word" 1986/1999

Like a souped-up time machine delivered a house party! The garage rock spirit of Zaremba's band, The Fleshtones, is in full force on this recently-reissued solo album that dates back to '86. Good-time rock'n'roll mixed with a horn section, backup female vocalists, and other studio amenities - you can add all the fixings you want to Peter Zaremba's songs yet they're still raw and overflowing with energy. You can't expect much less than a party from the romping "Hama Lama Bing Bang" or the horn-driven "I'm Gonna Knock You Out." With all the conviction of a Morrison or Jagger, Zaremba's vocals make even the most derivitive tracks transcendent. In the hands of other musicians these songs might sound stale, but the hand-clapping, high-spirited zeal with which this album was recorded is unparalled compared to 99% of the music produced since this release. Could it be that Zaremba was still breathing the punk vigor and idealism that most had lost by the mid '80s? Or maybe he was listening to too much KC & The Sunshine Band. Whatever the influences, Spread the Word is enough to make you shake your booty, defiantly snarl, and all the while feel the love. - by Elliott S.Peter Zaremba's Love Delegation:
