Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Cha's / Boozoo Chavis and the Magic Sounds "Zydeco Live Direct From Richard's Club, Lawtell. Louisiana 1988"

... Evidently, Boozoo's contract with Floyd Soileau wasn't exactly ironclad or exclusive during this time frame because a live CD (at Richard's) came along in 1987--Boozoo Chavis With Nathan & Zydeco Cha-Cha's--a shared album. Released on Rounder (RD-2069), it was supervised by Scott Billington. "It actually turned out all right considering the fact that I had borrowed [blues guitarist]John Mooney's van and set up a Sony F-1 digital recorder in the rear," said Scott. Still in print, it remains a steady seller but what was important about the venture was that Boozoo was able to make the first contact with the internationally distributed Rounder of Cambridge, MA, which would serve him in good stead in the 90s... - Larry Benicewicz, B.B.S.

The Milkshakes "Fourteen Rhythm And Beat Greats" 1982

One of the Medway's finest bands from the eighties. Very much influenced by the rhythm and beat from the 50's and 60's,as well as the comedians from the 40's onwards. Formed in 1980 from the ashes of the Pop Rivets. 1982: With ex-Rivet Russ Wilkins replacing Bertie on bass, 14 Rhythm & Beat Greats (recorded in Germany on borrowed money) showcases a band more in dynamic control and confident of their direction. Distinct echoes of the Kinks and assorted forgotten US garages begin to reverberate in the vinyl canyons.Since the introducing of Rhythm-and-Beat with The Milkshakes' debut LP, "Talkin' About Milkshakes", closely followed by their single "It's You", all the facts and figures point to The Milkshakes being the indeniable leaders of world beat.
From the opening rasp of "7 days", to the dying chimes of "Wo' now", the frenzied beat goes on. Even the more subdued tracks are given that unmistakable Milkshakes brand.
This is the 2nd great LP from the four Milkshakes, and from every corner of the globe daily reports are coming in of new successes for the four young men - Sidney, Australia - "Rush as many records as yer can spare, cobbers. It's a stampede!" - Dallas, Texas - "Oil ain't the word for it!" - and the story is the same the world over. William Loveday 1982 - liner notesThe Milkshakes:

Clifton Chenier With His Red Hot Louisiana Band "Live At The San Francisco Blues Festival" 1982

ZYDECO, the musical marriage of Louisiana's indigenous Cajun and Southern R&B; traditions, first crawled out from the bayous and oil derricks of southwestern Louisiana 30 years ago, with the black-chart success of Chiftin Chenier's 'Aye Tete Fille'. Chenier has ruled the zydeco kingdom as a private fiefdom since then, rebuffing all challengers to the Imperial Margarine-style crown he sports at performances. And Live at the San Francisco Blues Festival captures the Tabasco-fueled power and finesse of his Red Hot Louisiana Band at its peak. It's an accidental album, really taped three years ago by a sound man who set up a couple of mikes near the mixing booth at the outdoor festival and came up with a surprisingly clear crisp mix. Live is an aural documentary, an unadulterated, unretouched portrait of a Clifton Chenier performance complete with between-song pauses and stage patter ("Where we come from the crawfish got soul and the alligators sing the blues"). - Don Snowden, Boston Phoenix, 19 November 1985Clifton Chenier With His Red Hot Louisiana Band:

The Milkshakes "in Germany" 1983 (Wall City Records / Berlin, Germany)

With two guitars, bass, drums, and plenty of snarl and cheek, the Milkshakes joyously grind out their affectionate variations based on the rougher aspects of early 1960s U.K. rock & roll (Kinks, Beatles) and its '50s forefathers (Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry).1979: The Pop Rivets, a Canterbury group of devoted acolytes to punk's gritty DIY ethos, release Greatest Hits, home-recorded and enclosed in handmade sleeves (later repressed in printed covers; later still retitled for its Hangman reissue). A more mod-oriented and less reserved TV Personalities or Desperate Bicycles, the Rivets (aka Rivits) retrospectively fit neatly in with the sloppy, violent pop noisemeisters of the era, endearingly careless (though even the best songs leave mere flesh wounds as opposed to the scars inflicted by their more prominent contemporaries).
Empty Sounds from Anarchy Ranch consolidates the band's sound into a tamer, more controlled — albeit equally ill-tempered — punk stew. While Fun in the U.K. is a compilation drawn somewhat randomly from both LPs, Live in Germany '79 simultaneously nods deeper to their UK punk basis and points up their obvious (again in retrospect) trash '60s roots and attitudes 'In Germany' was originally released in 1983 on Wall City records from Berlin, Germany. Original copies have been selling on e-bay for over GBP 75! In 1984, the Milkshakes undertook an effort to have four albums released on four labels, in four countries, and all on the same day.

Screaming Jay Hawkins "Feast of the mau mau" 1988

"I hear those Voices again... I Smell Nookie!"... at least that's what I always thought he said... - BenTLiner notes by Pete Brown 1988
The wildman stops pounding out the blues on the piano and strolls over to where a long stick with a greenish-white skull on top stands. He picks up the stick, lights a cigarette, and places it in the skull's mouth. He regards the skull with a mixture of delight and disdain as it appears to puff the cigarette. A strange French band plays uneasy riffs in the background. Screamin' Jay Hawkins is in town
• Eating a wax feather sandwich • In the middle of • Nineteen hundred and yesterday
Some of us in the Beat poetry movement in the late fifties / early sixties, under the influence of various forbidden or destructive liquids and substances, used to play a game invented by Corso, Kerouac etc called "wordslings". We'd make up weirder and weirder juxtapositions of images and sentiments, trying to outweird each other, with pauses for laughter. A kind of surrealist contest or exercise. Later we would incorporate some of our findings in our work. We didn't know then but Screamin' Jay Hawkins had done it all already, without anything in his bloodstream but his own blood.
• Yesterday's comin' back tomorrow • Is is now
Let's face it, individuality is a pretty scarce commodity in these days of clip-on weirdness kits and midi'd chestwigs. People don't even make their own records anymore. Courage is even scarcer, because Courage and Corporate don't mix. That's why it's great to have these two albums, long favourites of mine, back in circulation, to stretch and disturb the minds of another generation of music lovers.
I'm not going into the history. The best of these performances are timeless and speak for themselves, standing proudly for themselves, standing proudly beside the work of Slim Gaillard, Eddie Harris, Sleepy John Estes, Victoria Spivey and Wynonie Harris (well, whoever wrote his songs).
These blasts put the most savage punk bands to shame, and rival the fiercest social and sexual commentators of our time.
• A pain called • "Had to eat more" • Made me get a job
and
• I've been hurt • Till I love the pain
I don't hesitate to say that WHAT THAT IS is a masterpiece. What album these days can boast a track like "The Feast Of The Mau Mau"?
• Cut the fat off the back of a baboon • Boil it down to a pound in a spoon • Scoop the eyes from a fly flying backwards • Take the jaws and the paws off a 'coon...
This should be compulsory listening for all white South Africans. And it gets heavier - how about the sheer graphic horror of "Constipation Blues" ("nobody ever made a record about real pain") with the great Plas Johnson's baritone sax expressively suggesting dark dysfunctions of the digestive system?
WHAT THAT IS was recorded live in a Hollywood club over two days with a changing personnel with more interesting contributions from Johnson and from the legendary British pianist Graham Bond (also signed to Mercury at the time), jazz guitarist Herb Ellis and the excellent Earl palmer on drums. I wish I'd been there. Just to see the audience. There are few albums in the history of obscurely popular music less uninhibited than this. The second album, BECAUSE IS IN YOUR MIND / ARMPITRUBBER (both titles appear on the original sleeve) contains, on first impressions, more conventional material. It's efficiently produced by Huey Meaux, with a solid studio band and some nice horn charts. It's more soul than blues-orientated especially on such numbers as "Tryin' To Reach My Goal" and "Our Love".However, there's much of interest - all the songs are about love or sex, and on several Screamin' Jay duets with an intriguingly sensual female vocalist, notably on two pornohumorous songs. "Bite It", based on the Mar-Keys famous "Last Night", is the funniest, featuring the lady on very rude backup noises that suggest that she indeed has the bit in between her teeth, and "I Wanta Know (What You Do Down There)" is about the same geographical region.
Screamin' Jay also subverts the ballad "Goodnight My Love" by implying he is having dealings with under-age jailbait. "Move Me", too, generates a strongly sexual groove.
To sum up, Screamin' Jay didn't just write "I Put A Spell On You". Digest these tracks and you will realize that: -
Screamin' Jay is a great singer, moving easily between Blues, Soul, Billy Eckstine and Spike Jones.
He is a great lyricist, exploring areas where most songwriters usually fear to tread.
He is a great humorist, both in writing and performing his own words and subverting the words and music of others. Listen to his loveably insulting mimicry in the "How do they talk?" sequence from "Feat Of The Mau Mau", then try to find his earlier recordings of "I Love Paris" and "Hong Kong" and you'll see what I mean.
He is a great screamer. His music is a cry from the streets of the mind. He is there to put you wise, and he isn't taking any shit.
• There's a sack hangin' in your head • With your brains in it • Eating stuffed chop suey • Corroded biscuits • And bat meat soup • In a gas mask
Or -
• To Was • Or not to have been
Ignore these records and their philosophy and you will be missing an important stage in your development. Luckily, Screamin' Jay is still with us. Be proud to have met him. Tell your friends. Don't be afraid. Maybe one day he will play in your town. Then you too will be able to see the skull smoke. - Pete Brown[Sides one and two were originally released as WHAT THAT IS! (Philips PHS 600-319) and were recorded live at the Club Amigo in North Hollywood on June 23rd and 24th, Nineteen Hundred and Yesterday, and is dedicated to President Nixon whose efforts to recapture the era of the early 50's do not pass unnoticed. Sides three and four originally comprised the LP SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS (Philips PHS 600-336)]

Freddie Cannon "Big Blast From Boston: The Best Of Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon" 1995

A shockwave of energy. Freddy will not leave the stage until the audience is dancing. I have seen him perform with Tommy Roe, Little Richard, Chuck Berry - you name it - and he steals the show every time because he always gives the audience everything he has. I promise you a rockin' time! - Ken Guss"Big Blast From Boston" certainly gets points for being the first high-quality Freddy Cannon CD reissue. Varese Records, though, trumped Rhino's hand with Palisades Park: The Very Best Of Freddy Boom Boom Cannon 1959-1963 (Varese). Brilliantly remastered and running 20 songs (19 of them Top 100 hits), it's a near-perfect package. All of those songs were cut for tiny Swan Records; when Cannon switched to major label Warner Brothers, he scored a couple of hits (including the theme song to Clark's later TV production, Where The Action Is) before fading from sight. After a 15 year gap, he charted one last hit in 1981 with "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock 'N' Roll," recorded with the Belmonts (sans Dion). Varese's Where the Action Is: The Very Best 1964-1981 covers those lean years and, while hardly as essential as Palisades Park, it's a must-have for Freddy's faithful flock. Cannon remains a popular attraction on the oldies circuit, where his irrepressible showmanship always brings his audience to their feet. - from: http://www.randysrodeo.com/oldies/cannon.php

The Delmonas "Do The Uncle Willy" 1989

If the Liverbirds - those supremely primitive girl group rockers from early-'60s Liverpool - are your speed, then this album, assembled from across the history of the Delmonas, is for you.Released two dozen years earlier, Uncle Willy would probably have generated a few top-40 singles, would have contributed cuts to several numbers of the Nuggets series, and would today be getting exactly the same degree of airplay on stations such as WFMU and WMBR. Such is its perfection. The musical influences in Do the Uncle Willy cover a wide span between psychedelia and rockabilly, running from Lesley Gore to Link Wray, with nods to more obscure sources like Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti-Western themes, the Zombies, Seeds and the Easybeats (and a very close listen will disclose what might be Cramps and Dead Boys riffs). However, what most characterizes Uncle Willy is that it’s a clean synthesis, not a pastiche. Thus, "Jealousy" isn’t a Monkees rip-off, though the Monkees might have done a rather fair job with it. "Lie Detector," which the Milkshakes turned into a Lennon anti-tribute, is here played for straight blooze-crunge. Out of print for several years, this Delmonas collection was originally released by Skyclad Records in the mid-80’s and preceeds Thee Headcoatees et al in bringing to the USA the unique and always brilliant raw garage of the Billy Childish saga. Get Hip has rescued this Garage Pop gem and re-releases it with brand new artwork and mastering right at the peak of the new garage movement so the masses of White Stripes fans can get a peak at one of the albums that influenced them in the first place. - from amazon

The Goldentones "Atlantis" 1996

These guys play instrumental surf music that has much in common with Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. Like that group, they take the basic surf sound and update it without it sounding lame. They also add elements of other musical stylings for variety's sake. Their first full-length CD, "Atmosphere" was a mostly surf-oriented affair, but on this one they expand a bit. Not that the surf element isn't still predominant on songs like "F-Forward," "Praying Mantis" and "Freestyle," but they mine a more rock territory with tunes like "Spitfire" in which they forgo the reverb for some harder-edged chords. "Departure" finds them in a moody, waltz-tempo mood with some shimmering guitar work. Being an instrumental band, they understand the importance of not fitting into one genre too much, and on this CD they do a fine job of proving that they can express themselves with just guitar, bass, drums, and some fine tunes. - Review by Alan Wright, contact: head13@aol.com

Flat Duo Jets "Wild Blue Yonder" - LiveLiveLive 1997

I have listened to all their stuff - studio and otherwise - and this is the best of their recordings. These guys were never meant to be in the confines of a studio and this recording shows why. Listen to Been By the Mountain, Been By the Sea. - By jude (Atlanta)the flat duo jets were the best live band of the 90's maybe of all times. these two guys fit like a puzzle. they have paved the way for the white stripes, the black keys, the kills the soledad brothers, etc. but listening to them on record doesnt do them justice. even though they had amazing class, grace, and knowledge when it came to recording. everyone has forgeton there genius. i feel it is a dirty shame when bands like the white stripes (who has discretly mention them even though all his old friends say he was obsessed) and the black keys can be that successful but the flat duo jets were pushed aside. LISTEN TO THIS!! who sounds this confident, exciting, sexy and wild anymore. let alone live!!! you will not regret it. unless you are a incubus fan. - By jonny angel "jon" (Motor city, Michigan)

SPY-FI "The Shadow Knows..." 2000

"Hello RYP, here is another gem from Phantom Frank." - WYVDat waren mooie tijden. - Noorderslagkrant 2001Bas Albers | Gerard Janssen | Phantom Frank

Girl Trouble "The Illusion of Excitement" 2003

Girl Trouble incorporates so many influences from Garage, Rockabilly, 50’s Crooners, early Punk and Country Cow Punk. You won’t be getting the value meal with this band; you are getting the supreme buffet! Get ready to feed your head! - By Christopher DudaThe Girl Trouble albums seem to come out less frequently, but no less full of the twistin' dance party garage rock action we know and love them for. This is the second release on their own label, and the first since 1998's Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays CD. With the trademark sound still very intact, Girl Trouble have created yet another infectious CD of outstanding quality. From the opener "Community Creep" to the closer, this is unbridled rock and roll music made for both dancing and romancing. K.P.'s voice is in great form here, and he adds some cool sax to the cooking instro tune "Simulator" and the slow burner "Going Going Go For It (Theme From "Go For It Summer"). Kahuna stretches a bit more with his varied guitar sounds, from rockabilly-ish to surf twang to heavier punk styles, while Bon and Dale keep the rhythm going. There's even a cool version of Brook Benton & Dinah Washington's "Rockin' Good Time" (with Kahuna doing the Dinah bit!) and a totally deranged version of Rosco Gordon's "Just A Little Bit." - Alan Wright

Girl Trouble "New American Shame" 1993

I hate to say that they actually have a BEST disc because they are all UNREAL, but if I had to choose... this would be the one I would want the world to hear. Toe-tapping, head-bopping, booty-shakin' rock and roll. Simple and to the point. This is the real northwest rock. Garage rock at it's BEST!!! - Reviewer: Paul L. CangelosiI bought this CD when it first came out in 1993 and have played it probably a hundred times, but I'm still not sick of it yet. I've seen probably 30 or so of this band's live shows and this CD captures the fun that is Girl Trouble onstage! They sound like maybe a cross between the Sonics, The Cramps, The Ramones, and a little bit of 60's Elvis thrown in. The cover they do of a little know Elvis song, "Put the Blame On Me" is one of the highlights of the CD. Some of their best all-time songs are on here, such as "House of Stone" and "Storm Warning." When they play these songs live, I dance so hard I practically get whiplash, and they are just as kick-*ss on the CD. Do yourself a big favor and pick this one up, especially if you've seen this band live-- you won't regret it. - Reviewer: A music fan

GIRL TROUBLE "Tuesdays, Thursdays And Sundays" 1998

"Hi, RYP. As promised, here is GIRL TROUBLE "Tuesdays, Thursdays And Sundays". I found it this week in a second hand record shop for 1.20 €. At this price, the CD box is completely destroyed on both sides but artwork and CD are in perfect shape. I remember it was on your blog that I discovered this band some months ago so that's why I asked you yesterday if you were interested in. Just consider it as a very little gift from me in return of all the huge amount of unknown but great music I have found here." - by ChrisHad the Cramps grown up in Tacoma, Washington, at the time when the Sonics and the Wailers (not those Wailers) regularly played high-school dances, they might have become Girl Trouble. As it happened, Girl Trouble was a lounge act way before cocktail rehabilitation struck; the members met not at a high-school dance but in a Tacoma bar shaped like a coffee pot. Once the foursome had taught one another to play their instruments and began gigging, the Java Jive also provided Girl Trouble with a venue and a mascot of sorts in the person of an 80-something go-go dancer named Granny. Girl Trouble's full-timers have been constant throughout the band's first dozen years together: lanky singer K. P. (Kurt) Kendall (briefly replaced by Dave Duet early on), guitarist Bill "Kahuna" Henderson, his sister/drummer Bon Henderson and bassist Dale Phillips. [Grant Alden]trax:

The Explorers Club "Freedom Wind" 2008

For all you summer-addicts!
The Beach Boys are the obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and you'll hear flourishes of Paul McCartney, The Byrds, Emitt Rhodes, ELO, and doo-wop. Embracing a pop blueprint from a time when great songs were played on the radio and everybody loved them all, The Explorers Club has recorded the sweetest pop record you're likely to hear this year. They're reclaiming the classics as their own, injecting them with life, and making music that transcends any era
. - amazonThese South Carolina dudes have made an outstanding Brian Wilson influenced album. This new band has taken all the great things I loved about the Beach Boys and 60's California soft pop, and given this classic sound a modern indie pop twist. Theres been hundreds of Beach Boys tributes over the years, but only a few have been able to capture the sound and spirit of the original group and their music. Traces of The Apples In Stereo, REM, ELO, Paul McCartney (Wings era), Jimmy Webb, Phil Spector, Buffalo Springfield, Curt Boettcher, The Association and Turtles also pop up.
Great hook-filled songwriting, tight harmonies (sadly lacking in most modern rock) with smart production and arrangement skills. They honestly add nothing new to this sound, but they all have youth on their side (they are in their early-mid 20's) and the Club amazingly makes it all sound fresh and cool again. It's far from your usual "oldies" tribute band stuff. If you love the "boys" and classic 60's soft pop you'll be right at home with the Explorers Club. (And could Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnson & Co. come up with something this good now?) - By Somewhere in Texas (Planet Texas)

DEXTER ROMWEBER "Chased By Martians" 2001

The brevity of the tracks allows Romweber to play with the pace of the album, delivering a nice balance of adrenaline-charged barnburners and slow, soulful numbers. The high-octane "Rockin' Maybelle" leads into the somber ballad "Used To You," which is immediately followed by the spooky, "Do the Lurd!!"
As always, Dexter draws from diverse elements of classic American music. The driving opener, "15,000 Lives," blends the movie Western sound of old style country with the gothic quality of The Cramps, while "The Seeker," is an upbeat, folksy number. Other songs are pure Rockabilly, including Romweber's "Late at Night" and "Hold Me Baby," penned by drummer Sam "Crash LaResh" Sandler. Start to finish, Chased by Martians affirms Dexter Romweber's unbridled talent and endless passion for true American rock-and-roll
.Chased by Martians is former Flat Duo Jets' member Dexter Romweber's magnum opus pastiche of old-tyme rock & roll, surf, garage, and rockabilly music. His previous solo album, Folk Songs: Solo Collection, was a collection of roots rock ditties. Here, he's expanded his repertoire and gone for a production style that perfectly fits the various musical styles. Most of the tracks have a perfect aged sound and demented outlook, as if a young Glenn Danzig were unleashed inside Sun Studios in Memphis sometime in the mid-20th century. Want some fuzzed-out guitar, a honky tonk, country-fried version of "The Seeker" (credited to Peter Townsend), and Reverend Horton Heat-style psychobillly (distorted Vox and all)? You got it all here. Romweber's previous band always went for a straightforward garage sound, but this album seems more like a direct tribute to Romweber's influences. There are covers of Charlie Rich, W.C. Handy, Eddie Cochran, the Surfaris, and the aforementioned Who song. From the song title of "Walkin' With Scary Hillbilly Monsters" alone, you get a sense of what he's trying to do here. Romweber himself even appears on the cover with a ghoulish getup. Perfect for any fan of roots or garage rock, or anybody who just likes music with spirit, unearthly or otherwise. (by Jeremy Salmon, All Music Guide)trax:

--Gregor Kannberg

FLAT DUO JETS "Introducing..." 1994

Introducing is another ripsnorting winner, mixing a handful of apt cover choices (including Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," which gets tender, sensitive treatment, and Bo Diddley's "Pretty Thing," which rattles like a jalopy going downhill with a busted axle as Crow attempts to demonstrate a three-handed version of Bo's signature beat) and a full supply of Dexter's originals. (Trouser Press)These are our boys. The most natural of musical traditions have coalesced into this fluid Rock and Roll unit. THE MORELLS "Think About It" 2005

The Morells, more specifically Lou Whitney and D. Clinton (Donnie) Thompson, have made a career of being in bands that the critics (and everyone who hears them) love, but don't get heard near enough. The Skeletons have backed up Steve Forbert and Dave Alvin, as well as having recorded on their own, and the Park Central Squares were a hit wherever they played throughout the midwest. The Morells is their name for their band that focuses on obscure covers of old rock, blues, R&B, and country songs with the occasional original thrown in."Think About It", their first offering in four years and their first for the Hightone label, is chock-full of treasures. From the cover of Chuck Berry's "Nadine" to the Thompson guitar showcase of Duane Eddy's "Guitar Man", the Morells have created another masterpiece of bar-band rock. Along with the covers "Girls Don't Worry My Mind (the Delmore Brothers), "How Come My Dog Don't Bark (Big Joe Turner), "Ups and Downs" (Paul Revere and the Raiders), and "Let's Dance On" (The Monkees), they have contributed five originals, more than their other two albums combined.
As usual, they cover the gamut of styles here. Ron Gremp's "Ain't My Day" is a '50's style bopper reminiscent of Bobby Pickett's "Monster Mash". The three contributions from Donnie Thompson make their way from Texas with the swing of "Popbelly" and the 2-step of "She's Gone" to the California pop of "Cool Summer". The lone contribution from Whitney (in collaboration with Thompson) is "Get What You Need", a frat-rock raver that invites you to sing along. (Amazon)trax:

THE SKELETONS "Nothing To Lose" 1997

Another charmingly ragged slice of American roots music, "Nothing to Lose" is a typically infectious set of blues, country-rock and rock & roll that proves why the Skeletons have long been considered one of America's best, most underrated bar bands. (AMG)I was overjoyed when I saw that the Skeletons were back together again and had released this new album. In my humble opinion, this is the best Skeletons album to date and I, for one, am begging for more! This album grabs you and doesn't let go. Its got basically no slow spots at all and I find myself listening to the entire album straight through regularly. I strongly recommend it to any Skeletons fan or anyone who is interested in being introduced to Missouri's finest roadhouse musicians. (Amazon)trax:

Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited "Jet Sound Inc." 2002

Hip music made on flee-market instruments!Remember the sixties instrumental one-day-hit-wonder 'Telstar' ? It sounds like SSSU picked up the old organ from this song (moog?) from a flee-market and started to make their own instrumental music on it, sampled with some other old electronic instruments that nobody looks after anymore. Quite good, the more you listen to it, the more you will like it. The atmosphere is like science-fiction music of the past, all instrumental, some songs with a echoing Ennio Morricone country-guitar. Perfectly fits in a lounge bar decorated with Barbarella posters. Reviewer: Sander Kessels "sander@kessels.com" (amsterdam, nh Netherlands)

THE SKELETONS "Waiting" 1992

The third album from bar-band par excellence the Skeletons finds their retro sound tapping into everything from R&B to frat rock. This band is outstanding! The music is funny, has a beautiful 60's backbeat and has infulences from all over the Rock/Country/Punk spectrum! "St. Louis" is a fantasic remake of the Blues Classic, "Waiting for my Gin to Hit Me" is a strange blend of monotone country and wild psychedelic's! "Hardware" is a Demented techno song, and "Rainy Day Parade" will have you dancing and spinning! Just amazing! I just wish they were still touring! This one and their first LP are a must have in any real music lovers collection! (also check out "In The Flesh", the Skeletons first Lp, and "The Morells SHAKE AND PUSH") The Morells are the first incarnation of the Skeletons... They play a song called "REDS", Reds was a Rt.66 drive-in hamburger stand, it is in all the Rt.66 Books... Famous for their "Giant Hamburg"... THE MORELLS "Shake And Push" 1982

"Here is one studio album of The Morells. The remaining related band, The Skeletons, have two other albums: Waiting - 1992, and Nothing To Lose - 1997. That will tie up all the Skeletons/Morells cool rockin’ sound." - Gyro1966How's this for an intriguing assortment of musicians: a middle-aged couple (he, once of Arthur "Sweet Soul Music" Conley's band, on bass and guitar; she on keyboards; both sing), a phenomenal guitarist who'd be stiff competition for Dave Edmunds and Brian Setzer if he were based in a city larger than Springfield, Missouri and - on occasional sax - a fellow whose main occupation is producing unconventional country star Boxcar Willie. Guitarist D. Clinton Thompson (who also served in the Ozark Mountain Daredevils) and bassist Lou Whitney (producer of the first Del-Lords LP) have been together in a variety of lineups; the former's superb "Driving Guitars" 45 rescued a swell Ventures tune from obscurity. In the Skeletons and Original Symptoms, they have mined the vaults of rock, R&B and country arcana for some ought-to-have-been classics and the inspiration to pen their own instant winners.
The Morells can easily slay most revivalist bands, and Shake and Push proves it with a casualness that's all the more ingratiating. A dozen bars into the second track, if you ain't slobbering on the LP jacket wondering where you're gonna find a dee-luxe greaseburger place like "Red's," then you just ain't American. The Del Fuegos "Stand Up" 1987

"Stand Up No, Not Tull, The Del Fuegos""This album was not accepted well critically, or by the band's fans when it was released in 1987. It featured a big name producer and multiple guest stars. I was not fond of it. The producer sounded like he was making a Stones, Springsteen, Dylan record with all the trimmings. When ripping it recently, I remembered several songs I'd liked before, and I warmed up to a few more. This is still my least favorite of their albums, but there are a few really great songs on it. The Trashwomen "Spend the Night with..." 1996

Really great lo-fi. This 12-song CD sounds like it was recorded in a cave and mastered directly from vinyl. The Trashwomen don't play or sing particularly well, but they still attack each and every tune with all they can muster. About half the tunes are covers and at least a third are instrumentals. The whole thing blows by in a furious whirlwind of reverbed-out guitar, steady bass and some real sloppy (but steady) drumming courtesy Tina "Boom Boom" Lucchesi. The perfect soundtrack for your next Hallowe'en party. - Adem TepedelenIf you took Thee Headcoatees, the Frumpies and surf music and threw them into a psychotic blender, you might get the Trashwomen. An offbeat, often playful mix of songs, "Spend the Night..." is a short, quick burst of yowling energy. The only downside to this obscure jewel is that it's under a half-hour. But even with that and the challenge you'll encounter trying to find it, it is still worth your time. If the sun rises and sets for you with the punk screech of a female, this is for you. Now let's hope someone releases the rest of the Trashwomen oeuvre on CD. - By Jose Jones

THE SKELETONS "In The Flesh!" 1987/8

Prior to the Skeletons, guitarist D. Clinton Thompson (who also served in the Ozark Mountain Daredevils) and bassist Lou Whitney (producer of the first Del-Lords album) played together in a variety of lineups, including the pride of Springfield, MO - The Morells. The former's superb "Driving Guitars" 45 rescued a swell Ventures tune from obscurity, and the pair has continued to mine the vaults of rock, R&B;, and country arcana for some minor classics (unearthing tunes, as Robert Christgau put it, "Dave Edmunds would give his doctorate for") and the inspiration to pen their own instant winners. The 'Rockin' Bones' LP (1987) compiled the entire contents of the band's original three pre-Morells singles (from '79-'80, after which three of the Skeletons became Steve Forbert's band) and added three tunes cut after the Skeletons were revived in the mid-'80s. The album, which is simply delightful from start to finish, takes an automotive angle, with Whitney's flawless "Trans Am" and covers like "Gas Money" and the instrumental "B/Gas Accord." If Johnny Otis' "Crazy Country Hop" and Whitney's Presleyesque "Tell Her I'm Gone" break the topical mold, they do nothing to interrupt the magical mood.
Adding a second keyboard player, the Skeletons made an all-new (recording-wise, that is) album, reducing the overt nostalgia in favor of a more integrated old-fashioned sound that brings a wider collection of influences into the studio. Besides a wonderfully updated cover of Sonny Bono's "Laugh at Me" (This time the protagonist is bald!) and the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Older Guys," 'In the Flesh!' (1988) contains the Del-Lords' purposeful "I Play the Drums," the somewhat sappy "For Every Heart," and a brief "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," with the lyrics altered by one note. The playing's great and the spirit never falters, but this accomplished collection doesn't have quite enough of what makes 'Rockin' Bones' so downright upright. In 1991, East Side Digital released a CD, also titled 'In the Flesh!,' that comprised both Skeletons LPs and included a short essay and history of the band by Daniel Durchholz. - Jim Green/Ira Robbins
