"Diggin' Gold - A Galaxy Of West Coast Blues" 2004 - VA

In 1963 Fantasy hired legendary LA production team Cliff Goldsmith and Ray Shanklin to furnish artists and masters for their R&B subsidiary. Over the next two years the team would produce a small but perfectly formed catalogue of classy, soulful blues of the highest quality, showcased for the first time on "Diggin’ Gold – A Galaxy Of West Coast Blues". Of the acts Goldsmith and Shanklin brought to Galaxy, by the far the most successful was Little Johnny Taylor, whose 1963 single ‘Part Time Love’ was a huge hit in that era and has since become a blues standard. Taylor’s prolific release schedule has been anthologised elsewhere, but with "Gold Diggin’" we are proud to present seven tracks by this exemplary blues stylist that are totally new to CD, including three titles previously unissued on any format. Also featured on the compilation are blues stalwarts such as Clay Hammond and Saunders King, along with a handful of more obscure acts such as Del Cunningham, Joe Johnson, Billy Keene and Rob Robinson. All these singers are staunchly in the same gutsy gospel-blues mould as Taylor, and similarly, are backed by the jazzy horn charts, stinging guitar and meaty rhythm section of Shanklin’s fabulous accompaniment. Many of these original Galaxy singles are also exceptionally rare. All tracks were cut in Los Angeles 1963-65, with this being the debut on CD for 22 of the 24 sides. Meticulous research in the Fantasy vault has meant the original session tapes have been utilised throughout, making this a feast for the ear of any discerning blues aficionado.

CHUCK JACKSON "Mr. Emotion" 1984

Chuck Jackson is one of the great underrated soul singers of the '60s. His deep and unerringly smooth vocals and the slick uptown sound of his records may give some listeners and critics the impression that he is lacking in soul. Not so. One listen to him soaring through the incredible "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" or "I Keep Forgettin' (Everytime You're Near)" will certainly dispel any doubts. Other hilights include the unusually raw "Hand It Over" and an intimate version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself." (Tim Sendra, All Music Guide)traxfromwax:

Destroy All Monsters "Live" 1989

Upon releasing their first-ever single, 1978's "Bored", Destroy All Monsters became darlings of the British music press, based largely upon the connection to the Stooges' legacy; "Bored" was soon set for UK release on the Cherry Red label, which licensed the record before ever even hearing it."Lester Bangs once said that D.A.M. was the closest thing to the Stooges ever to emerge from Detroit's underground. The wall of sound immediatly overwhelms you. It's dangerous and very addictive even in small doses. Ron Asheton's Les Paul builds layers of dense metallic textyre. Michael Davis counter attacks with a thunderous base. Niagara haunting vocals, at times eclipsed by this mayhen add the erie atmosphere tus band is famous for. Larry Steel's explosive percussion completes the assault. Their music has been called a war of nerves and to witness it without the benefit of a couple of stiff ones is not recommended. I could never quite figure out what is different about Detroit bands, but there is a certain kind of energy that defies discription. But what ever it is, I think you'll agree that Destroy All Monsters are at ground zero." - Garry Henderson

JULIE DRISCOLL, BRIAN AUGER & THE TRINITY "Open" 1968

One of the icons of London's underground jazzy mod scene, Brian Auger puzzled more than one music critic bringing this crossover to perfection during the mid-late sixties. 1967's Open sees Auger switch to a more hippy folk acid R&B with the help of Julie Driscoll - his female partner already featured in his earlier project, the Steampacket. Driscoll performs in her perfectly trendy disjointed vocal style over Auger's Hammond aural carpet to createsome interesting pop r'n'b tunes culminating in the fabulous cover version of Donovan's "Season Of The Witch". (Elusive Disc)From the outgrowth of Steampacket, a band that included not only Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll, but also a young Rod Stewart, came Auger and Driscoll's collective effort that produced two albums. When Driscoll left in 1969 to pursue a solo career, Auger, drummer Clive Thacker, and bassist Dave Ambrose continued as Brian Auger & the Trinity. Open has been unfairly characterized as a kind of groove jazz rip, one that combines Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McGriff, and the rock sensibilities of the psychedelic era. Whatever. There are many tracks here, from deep grooved funky jazz to lilting ballads and greasy blues numbers and the skronky exotica number "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph." Auger may not have been as gifted an organist as Alan Price technically, but he could more than hold his own on the Hammond B-3 (as evidenced by the first two tracks here which are instrumentals, "In And Out" and "Isola Nate"). He was also able to pull more sounds out of the instrument than any of his peers. Auger wasn't much of a vocalist, but he could dig deep and get the emotion out of a song — especially in a funky number like "Black Cat," which featured a killer though uncredited studio horn section. Driscoll's contributions are all on the second half of the album, beginning with the shuffling choogle of Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," continuing through a moving reading of Pops Staples' "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)," two Auger originals, and concluding in a reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" that single-handedly established her reputation as a vocalist of great interpretative ability and emotional dexterity. Almost eight minutes in length, it is the perfect interplay for the quartet with its dark, smoky swirling energy and extant soul groove, and capos the album on a high note, making it a delightful precursor to the classic Streetnoise which was to follow. - AMG Review

THE LEFT BANKE "There’s Gonna Be A Storm"

The excellent Left Banke collection is long out of print and now sells for good money! This New York group pioneered "Baroque'n'Roll" in the '60s with their mix of pop/rock and grand, quasi-classical arrangements and melodies. Featuring teenage prodigy Michael Brown as keyboardist and chief songwriter, the group scored two quick hits with "Walk Away Renee" (number five) and "Pretty Ballerina (number 15). Chamber-like string arrangements, Steve Martin's soaring, near-falsetto lead vocals, and tight harmonies that borrowed from British Invasion bands like the Beatles and the Zombies were also key elements of the Left Banke sound. Though their two hits are their only well-remembered efforts, their debut album (Walk Away Renee / Pretty Ballerina) was a strong, near-classic work that matched the quality of their hit singles in songwriting and production. GENE CHANDLER "Just Be True" 1980

Chicago Soul At It’s Very Best!Gene Chandler is remembered by the rock & roll audience almost solely for the classic novelty and doo wop-tinged soul ballad "Duke of Earl"; the unforgettable opening chant of the title leading the way, the song was a number one hit in 1962. He's esteemed by soul fans as one of the leading exponents of the '60s Chicago soul scene, along with Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. Born Eugene Dixon, he was a member of the doo wop group the Dukays and "Duke of Earl" was actually a Dukays recording; Dixon was renamed Gene Chandler and the single bore his credit as a solo singer. Chandler never approached the massive pop success of that chart-topper (although he occasionally entered the Top 20), but he was a big star with the R&B audience with straightforward mid-tempo and ballad soul numbers in the mid-'60s, many of which were written by Curtis Mayfield and produced by Carl Davis. TED TAYLOR "Keep Walking On" 1980

16 great songs from the late 50’s to the early 70’s!Soul-blues singer Ted Taylor unleashed his stratospheric, falsetto-driven voice on a wide variety of material during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, his gospel heritage never far from the surface. Taylor first entered the studio as a member of the Cadets and Jacks, a Los Angeles R&B vocal group with two names that recorded for Modern. By the late '50s, Taylor was signed to Ebb, and a myriad of other imprints soon followed (notably Duke, where he waxed his first version of the sugary ballad "Be Ever Wonderful"), Okeh (his sides for the Columbia subsidiary were done in Chicago and Nashville), and Ronn, where he spent nearly a decade. A car wreck claimed his life in 1987. (Bill Dahl, All Music Guide)traxfromwax:

The Damned "Strawberries" 1982

There is their high-energy punk edge, their ever-present and exceptional melodic sensibility (Vanian's voice has never sounded better), dark psychedelic textures, great lyrics, and EVERY song is excellent.Finding their feet again after yet another career misstep, the Damned emerged with STRAWBERRIES, their fifth studio album in as many years. With their line-up more or less stable at this point, it features Dave Vanian's more assured vocals and the more-pop-by-the-minute keyboards and guitars of Captain Sensible. STRAWBERRIES evokes the best of the Stranglers with a touch of XTC thrown in. Well produced by the band themselves, aurally it's a great improvement over previous efforts, and even includes a lyric sheet. From the catch-a-fire punk of "Ignite," the album moves on to new-wave pop with "Generals" and "Stranger on the Town." "Dozen Girls" foreshadows the gothic Damned of the near future, while "The Dog," STRAWBERRIES' most interesting track, fortifies their creepy vampiric image. For un-cynical punks in love, there's also the surprisingly bouncy un-cynical love song "The Pleasure and the Pain," and its companion "Life Goes On." An enjoyable album and highly recommended. - from cd universeThe Damned:

LOS BRUJOS "FIN DE SEMANA SALVAJE" 1991

"Hi there! Heres some stuff from Argentina. If you want/like/can post it... well its in your hands... if not.. hope you like it! ... lol ..." - Pablo "Pochola" Cazorlathe review/history of the band:
Argentinean alternative band Los Brujos got involved in the local scene in 1988. Combining '60s beat sounds and '80s hardcore-metal, Los Brujos was pointed out as an experimental group. In addition, their theatrical performances, where musicians created a special atmosphere around them, made Los Brujos a very special rock act. Daniel Melero produced their first album, called Fin De Semana Salvaje, in 1992; soon, their song "Kanishka" hit the charts. In 1993, San Cipriano was released, followed by 1995's Guerra De Nervios, which had contributions by Gustavo Cerati and Juana La Loca's dummer Aitor Graña. The band announced its breakup in 1998.

TYRONE DAVIS "The Tyrone Davis Story"

The king of romantic Chicago soul, Tyrone Davis' warm, aching vulnerability and stylish class made him especially popular with female soul fans during a lengthy hitmaking run that lasted throughout the '70s. Best known for the classics "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turn Back the Hands of Time," Davis was a versatile baritone singer who could handle everything from pop-soul to funk to bluesy chitlin-circuit R&B;, but smooth soul was his true bread and butter. Once Davis broke through in the late '60s, he never really stopped recording; although the R&B; chart hits dried up by the early '80s, he was still going strong into the new millennium, decades after his first single was released. The Solarflares "Laughing Suns" 2004

The second Big Beat album from the band formed by the two lead members of the Prisoners - Allan Crockford and Graham Day - and members of Billy Childish's Buff Medways and Dutronc. Day is one of the country's great unsung vocalists and songwriters. Big Beat's re-issue of the Prisoner's catalogue has seen good sales and a re-awakening of interest in the band once described as one of the great lost acts of the 80s. " Laughing Sons" shows an extension of the SolarFlares' modus operandi from the straight garage rock'n'roll of " Look What I Made Out Of My Head" into a more psychedelic vision of albion, most notably on the tour- de-force 'Chatham Town'trax:

THE MILKSHAKES / THE STING-RAYS / THE CANNIBALS "These Cats Ain't Nothing But Trash" 1983

"I tell you it just won't go away... It's been buried more times than Bela Lugosi and still it keeps right on bouncing back... Every time the bland start leading the bland up the charts... Along comes......
They called it ROCK'N'ROLL They called it ROCKABILLY They called it BEAT They called it PUNK

THEY CALL IT TRASH
It's found in garages living off the carbon monoxide fumes and every now and then it crawls out of the pit and onto the stage. The 100 Club, The Hope And Anchor, Brixton's Garage and even Dingwalls have all hosted a Night Of Trash. Now for the first time the three bands at the top of the heap, together on one record." The Solarflares "Can Satisfy You" 2003

The Solarflares return with their 4th album on their own Own-Up label, following last year’s LP on Big Beat – and it’s a collection of covers and live tracks with the odd new track and alternate take from previous albums.
It all starts with a new track, ‘Inside Of A Dream’, a current highlight of the band’s set and a typical Graham Day masterpiece with a crunching guitar riff and lyrics that build up to a chorus that remain in your head before it merges into a cover of possibly The Monkees’ finest moment in ‘Valerie’.
Wimple Winch’s ‘Save My Soul’ is probably the ultimate freakbeat track and I doubt many could do the track justice – no surprise that The Solarflares are one of the few who could, and aside from the guitar riff, the haunting organ of Parsley comes to the fore.
The first of 3 live tracks follow with ‘Miles Away’, originally on ‘That Was Then And So Is This’, the band’s 2nd album. Another Graham Day original, the live cut is from a blistering performance at the tail end of last year. Then a trip back to The Prisoners’ ‘A Taste Of Pink’ album, and a dust-down for ‘Creepy Crawlies’. It still retains the rawness of the original and shows how well these songs stand up 21 years later.
The Seeds’ ‘Satisfy You’ is covered next before the 2nd LP is raided again for an alternate take on ‘Get It Together’ and the 2nd live track ‘Suckin’ Out My Insides’. There’s not a great deal of difference between the 2 versions of ‘Get It Together’, though a little heavier on the organ, whilst ‘Suckin’ Out My Insides’ sees the band in full flow at the Buffalo Bar Islington, with their energetic live sound captured perfectly.
The Ramones’ ‘Glad To See You Go’ is tackled next followed by a new take on last year’s excellent single, ‘Open Your Eyes’. A great Who-like number, ‘Just Wanna Be Bad’, the 3rd live track on the album, is again full of power, energy and anger and builds up to a feedback crescendo. The quality of the live tracks makes me wonder why they don’t issue a live LP.
The album finishes with 2 more covers, Fire’s ‘Father’s Name Is Dad’ and ‘Hold On’, which sees Parsley take lead vocal and let loose on the keyboard.
It’s more or less a fan club album and is only currently available from Detour Records. It is, however, well worth tracking down for some interesting covers, great live cuts and especially ‘Inside Of A Dream’. - Reviewed by Dave Edwards
