The Downliners Sect "Sectuality" 2002

If you've never heard the Sect, be prepared for a lot of smiles, fun, rockin' and surprises. This double-CD set is essential listening -- not just for Downliners Sect fans, but for anyone who's ever worn out copies of any of the first three Rolling Stones albums or owns anything by the Yardbirds, the Pretty Things, Them, the Graham Bond Organisation, the Animals, early John Mayall, the Shadows of Knight, or any of countless blues-inspired American garage bands. In content, it's approximately equivalent to Charly's Yardbirds Ultimate Collection, encompassing the complete contents of the Downliners Sect's three original LPs, from the bluesy "Baby, What's Wrong" to the pounding, proto-psychedelic "Glendora." Thus, listeners don't get the EP and demo tracks "Cadillac," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Beautiful Delilah," or "Shame Shame Shame," and "I Can't Get Away from You" and "Roses" are also missing from the other end of their history -- all of which are present, along with a lot else, on See for Miles' Definitive Downliners Sect: The Singles A's & B's, which is the perfect complement to this set. What listeners do get is two hours of some of the most delightfully raw and unaffected, downright affectionate British renditions of American rock & roll and R&B, so unstylish that they achieve a kind of beguiling, offhanded stylishness all their own -- where the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, the original Fleetwood Mac et al. all had personalities with a certain allure and mystery that made them insinuate themselves into the music, the Sect thump away with more enthusiasm than distinctive talent or personalities, or inventiveness...... That must be why they can shift from sounding like Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley to Bill Haley & His Comets on "I'm Hooked on You," then resemble the early Spencer Davis Group on "Comin' Home Baby," then suddenly sound like the rawest American garage band this side of the Litter on "Why Don't You Smile Now," then switch back toward the Rolling Stones on "Don't Lie to Me" (which includes the most delightfully out of tune bass accompaniment you may ever hear on a finished, released record, not that the guitarist seems to have known where middle C was either...), and follow that with the jocular "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose," sounding like the Pretty Things having fun -- and they even end in a vaguely Kinks-like mode (circa 1966-1967) with "The Cost of Living." And all of that's on their last album, which isn't usually thought of as representing their peak -- geez, on "I'm Looking for a Woman" they get into this Bo Diddley groove that's so perfect, despite being so much more flaccid than Bo would ever permit his band to sound, that your fingers will start dancing to that shave-and-a-haircut beat; there's just something so real and honest about the way these guys plunked and plodded their way through their music, running on sheer bravado and a genuine affection at their core -- it didn't propel them to stardom (except maybe in Scandinavia), but it makes their stuff worth hearing in full 40 years later, and how many bands beyond the Rolling Stones is that true about? This set will dazzle any enthusiast of British blues or British Invasion rock, or, for that matter, first-rate American-style garage punk. The sound is excellent and the annotation is very thorough; there are some misprints and missing words on the song listings, but where it counts, this set would be worthwhile even at twice the price. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guidetrax disc 1:

"Trash Box" Vol 3 of 5 - VA

"Here is the links to the five volumes of the trash box compilation. This is a mid nineties reissue of the fabulous early Pebbles compilation releases minus the Pebbles Surf LP. Enjoy!!" - Red Neckerson (link in the sitebar)The Trash Box is a 5-CD box set of mid-1960s garage rock and psychedelic rock recordings, primarily by American bands. This box set is similar to the earlier Pebbles Box (a 5-LP box set) and includes almost all of the same recordings in that box set (and in the same order), along with numerous bonus tracks at the end of each disc. Supposedly, the Trash Box collects the first five volumes of the CDs in the Pebbles series (i.e., those released by AIP Records, not to be confused with the 4 earlier CDs that were issued by ESD Records). However, as is generally true of the CD reissues of these five volumes (though not nearly to the same extent), the tracks differ significantly on all five discs as compared to both the original Pebbles LPs and the later Pebbles CDs in the corresponding volumes; and the surf rock rarities on Pebbles, Volume 4 have been eschewed entirely. Overall, there are 109 tracks in the box set (excluding the introduction and ending cuts) as compared to 101 songs on the individual CDs and 72 tracks in the Pebbles Box. Although most of the recordings on the Trash Box were released at some point on one of the individual Pebbles albums, several of the songs have not appeared elsewhere in the Pebbles series. Inexplicably, one of these songs is the well-known hit "I Fought the Law (but the Law Won)" by the Bobby Fuller Four (on Disc Four) – which is also included in the Pebbles Box – in place of the much rarer "Wine Wine Wine" by Bobby Fuller that appears on Pebbles, Volume 2. - from wikitrax Vol 3:

THE FUZZTONES "MONSTER A-GO-GO" 1995

"Heh, Heh! THE FUZZTONES in the great Rock'n'Roll tradition of the immortal (I just love that word) Phil Spectre... er, I mean Spector Christmas album, the goblins of garage grunge have conjured up 13 mouldy mantras in commemoration of EVERYONE'S favorite holiday! Slap this on the ol' hifi and watch everyone shake their BONES! Even your MUMMY! Now, thanks to the Fuzztones, every day is Halloween!!!"This LP is a collection of 60s and 60s-type monster and Halloween songs by the New York neo-60s garage band from the 80s, the Fuzztones. The Fuzztones (especially the original lineup) played 60s-style garage music, mostly covers of great stompers from the Pebbles/Back From the Grave, etc comps. If you are reading this, then you probably know what they are and who the Fuzztones were/are!
On this LP, they play tribute to the "monster" craze of the 60s, covering songs that were done by other people, like Zacherly the Cool Ghoul. (Zacherly's version of "Dinner With Drac" is WAY better than the Fuzztones' version; but kudos for giving a nod to the man!). There are all kinds of nods to to other influences, like Screaming Jay Hawkins (another one of my faves!), whom the Fuzztones got to play with, the lucky bastards!
People who are familiar with this kind of music may have heard some of these songs before, especially "I'm A Wolfman", "The Witch", and "Jack the Ripper."
All of them are great tunes. My only beef against the Fuzztones is that sometimes they could be a little too "slick" for my taste, but hey, as a fanatical lover of 60s garage and 60s monster movies & music, I am GRATEFUL that ANYBODY would do this kind of stuff.
Great stuff for discriminating monsters! - a reviewer from amazon

THE WILDEBEESTS "Dimbo Party!" 1997

You remember last year's hot album on Sympathy, well here's the follow-up from Scotland's lairds of boss racket! A monstrous slice of trashy garage, blues, and punk rock stupidity! Featuring refugees from THEE MILKSHAKES, THE KAISERS and THE THANES, this great new album from THE WILDEBEESTS is sure to be a winner. The band consists of these three gits John Gibbs (a founding member of the Kaisers, Holly Golightly), Lenny Helsing (Thanes, Green Telescope) and last but not least Russ Wilkins (Pop Rivets, Milkshakes and Delmonas) who all cut their teeth playing raw beat music and generally causing a rumpus aurally, when their paths crossed they found that they had the same old cranky, rusty equipment plus some new(ish) shiny tunes that had accumulated along the way, the Wildebeests were born! fueled by enthusiasm, dunce caps and other ingredients, like finding out that they all shared the same attitudes and ideas when it came to what 'making a right old honest bloody racket'' was all about...and thusly the Wildebeests did verily go forth and bang , scrape, thump and twang.
Utilising the sheer sonic force of their 50 Watt P.A, 50 Watt Treble 'n' Bass and the blistering power of the 15 Watt guitar 'knee trembler' the 'Beests have stumbled through the shady underbellies of the popular music scene building a large following of like-minded 'dimbos' and 'dimbettes' both in Britain and the rest of Europe...could the world be their oyster? nope, but this doesn't deter them from jabbing a knife in it's side and trying to prise it open... - from: http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~weblink/index.htmltraxfromwax:

"GOLDWAX COLLECTION" Vol 2 VA

The Goldwax Record label was formed in 1964 by Quinton M. Claunch and Rudolph V. "Doc" Russell in Memphis, Tennessee. Goldwax recorded soul music.
Quinton Claunch was born in 1922 in Tishomingo, Mississippi, and in the 1940s played in a country band on radio station WLAY in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. When he got married in 1948, he moved to Memphis and got a job as a traveling salesman, selling hardware supplies. While a salesman, he still dabbled in the music business, and he was a friend of Sam Phillips (of Sun fame). Claunch played guitar and co-wrote some songs with Bill Cantrell that were recorded on the Sun label. In 1957 he, Cantrell, and others formed the Hi Record label, but Claunch sold his interest in the label in 1959. When Doc Russell, a Memphis pharmacist, expressed an interest in forming a record label, Russell and Claunch established Goldwax. Their first record was "Darlin'" by the Lyrics, which was a good-sized regional hit.
Claunch and Russell had their biggest success with two members from a gospel group called the Redemption Harmonizers. The two, along with a songwriter, showed up on Claunch's doorstep one midnight and told Claunch they had some tapes they'd like him to hear. The first singer was O.V. Wright, who had been a member of the Sunset Travelers that recorded on the Peacock Label. They recorded Wright on a tune the songwriter of the trio -- Roosevelt Jamison -- had written called "That's How Strong My Love Is." The record was a soul music classic -- later recorded by both Otis Redding and the Rolling Stones. As the record was climbing the charts, they were notified by Don Robey of Peacock Records that O.V. Wright was under contract to Peacock as a member of the Sunset Travelers. Even though Claunch and Russell felt that Wright's contract with Peacock did not cover solo recordings, they eventually agreed to give up future rights to him in exchange for continued distribution of the single.
The other singer of the three that visited Claunch that night was James Carr. Carr began singing gospel at age eight in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, and he later spent time in several gospel groups including the Harmony Echoes (along with Wright). Carr had some great soul hits for Goldwax, including "You've Got My Mind Messed Up," "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man," and the Dan Penn/Chips Moman tune "At the Dark End of the Street." Unfortunately, Carr was unprepared for success and slipped into mental illness. It became more and more difficult for him to complete a recording session, and that, coupled with the dissolution of Goldwax in 1969, effectively ended his career in the charts, although he has performed occasionally even into the 1990s. There have been many reissues of the James Carr Goldwax records. Many regard these as some of the best soul music ever recorded.
Another group recorded by Goldwax was the Ovations, with lead singer Louis Williams. Claunch and Russell recorded them on the Sam-Cooke-soundalike song "It's Wonderful to Be In Love," which made the lower reaches of the Top 30 soul charts in 1965. The Ovations went on to more success on MGM records in 1972 and 1973.
Goldwax albums were distributed by Bell Records of New York. The only known albums released by Goldwax in the United States are by James Carr (Goldwax 3001)trax:

The only known albums released by Goldwax in the United States are by James Carr [Goldwax 3001 and 3002]. There was a Goldwax Ovations' album issued in Japan; the number was 3003. Whether this album was ever released in the United States during the 1960s is unknown. The label was dissolved in 1969 due to personal differences between Claunch and Russell.

CHOPPER "Slogans And Jingles" 1993

TOP OF THE POPS - 50 ESSENTIAL U.S. POWER POP ALBUMS
This one's a big, fat, juicy slice of pure pop fun, owing musical debts not only to the Fab Four, but also to the Zombies and bubblegum. Chopper's majordomos Steven Deal and Robert Dietrich abandoned the power-chorded Who-isms of their first release in favor of the almighty jangle, with smile-inducing results. "Is it love Inside?!?!" is a treat, with an opening riff that recalls "The Rapper" by the Jaggerz, while "Swirling Girl" has a joyous, poppy vibe to it. A cover of the Records' "Same Mistakes" is a nice touch also. Deal: "We were so excited and inspired to do the 'perfect pop album' that I think we came close, or as close as we could. Our goal was to try and do a PET SOUNDS, RUBBER SOUL, or ODESSEY AND ORACLE, which is why in retrospect some of the tracks are almost tributes to the music we love." - GOLDMINE MAGAZINEtrax:

Alpha Safari "Comercial Suicide"

"Hi RYP. Dunno if this is quite your cup of tea, but... I find this sound to be somewhat close to early Nirvana (yea, 90's hit band, not the real 60's acid scorcher) meets Shellac meets Helmet meets early Stone Temple Pilots. So you could expect something quite different from these guys, but still, this is worth of giving it a try." - SuicidekinGThe story of Alpha Safari started when lead vocalist Patrik Wiréns previous band Misery Loves Co split up in the year 2000. Together with Entombed guitarist Ufo Cederlund and the rhythm section of Patrik Thorngren (bass) and Olle Dahlstedt (drums) the four of them began playing together as Washoe and soon did a few shows in the Stockholm area. Their first demo, with songs like "Björklinge" and "It wasn't designed for us", spawned great reviews from the most conservative of rock & indie critics before the band changed their name to Alpha Safari. Their debut, "Commercial Suicide", will be released August 18 (2004) in Scandinavia. USA and Europe will follow shortly after. - From "Threeman" label webpage (i added 2004, since this was not released elsewhere...)

Tuff Darts! "Tuff Darts!" 1978

Back in 1978 when The Ramones and The Sex Pistols were all the rage, there was another punk rock group that dented the charts. Tuff Darts! Headed up by lead guitarist Jeff Salen, this cult favorite made only one album, featuring hard driving punk/pop songs. Fans have been screamin' for this one!I first became aware of this band when I was in Junior High School. It was the late 70's, folks were mainly into Disco. After seeing the Sex Pistols on Good Morning America, I was drawn into the world of Punk Rock, never to return! Now, as I near the age of 40, I'm reminded of one of my all time favorite records! Tuff Darts was a major inspiration for me in my youth (says something about me, eh?). I can still remember all the lyrics to "your love is like nuclear waste" and "rats". I got my vinyl from, believe it or not, the Columbia Record Club! Got it with Never Mind the Bollucks! Amazing! Still have it somewhere! - Jason "mcdeavitt2" (Lincoln, NE United States)Tuff Darts:

The Stunt Doubles "Sea of Graves" 2006

"RYP, I've been to your site a number of times and have always been stoked to be able to replace some worn out vinyl I once had or to discover something new. So I figured I'd give a little back and send out a link to my band, The Stunt Doubles' latest (and last) album, Sea of Graves. We're from the Cape Fear pennisula (aka Wilmington, NC USA). We played a mix of surf-instro/cowpunk. So check it out, any comments (good or bad) are welcome. If you like it enough to want to buy one, go to www.myspace.com/thestuntdoubles and we'll set it up. Thanks again for some great tunes!!""Up from the waters of the Cape Fear comes The Stunt Doubles. A four piece band with a recipe for cowpunk. Take one part first wave L.A. punk ferocity of bands such as The Gun Club, X, and The Bags. Add a heaping helping of the surf-guitar frenzy of Dick Dale and Man or Astroman. Add a dash of outlaw country; and top it all off with influences of surfing, skating, fishing and the Carolina coastal history that follows close behind. Composed of 13 songs, Sea of Graves is the painting of a Cape Fear Cowpunk soundscape, featuring tales of swashbuckling corsairs, backwoods swamp juju, matadors and mariachis; and no-count women and the men who kill them.“The Stunt Doubles:

Ronnie Spector "She Talks To Rainbows" 1999 - EP

"Greetings RYP! Here's a link to another rock'n'roll mama, Ronnie Spector's "She Talks To Rainbows" EP. Great record this! It was released in 1999 and co-produced by Joey Ramone. Probably the best thing Ms Spector has done since her days with the Ronnettes.
"She talks to birds she talks to angels
she talks to trees she talks to bees
She don't talk to me."
- Tiger TigerThis is an EP by the former lead singer of the Ronettes. It was produced by Joey Ramone and Daniel Rey, and includes covers of two Ramones songs, a Beach Boys song and a Johnny Thunders song, as well as a live version of the old Ronettes song "I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine". Ronnie can still sing, and this is a fun, albeit short, CD. Joey Ramone duets with Ronnie on "Bye Bye Baby" and contributes harmony vocals to the end of "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory". Ronnie Spector fans, or Joey Ramone fans for that matter, should enjoy this CD. - By Johnny Heering "trivia buff" (Bethel, CT United States)
