ROY HEAD & THE TRAITS "Treat Me Right" 1965

Actually a country and rock vocalist rather than an R&B; star, Roy Head nevertheless cut one of the great pieces of up-tempo soul in the mid-'60s. "Treat Her Right" on Back Beat made it to number two on the R&B; charts and number two pop, and the fact that Head was white was soft-pedaled in R&B; circles while the song made its way up the charts. That performance alone was enough to qualify Head as one of the finest blue-eyed soul singers of the 1960s. But in fact, Roy was one of the most versatile stylists of the era, capable of hard R&B;/rock tunes (even cutting material with a pre-fame Johnny Winter on backup guitar); mournful, soul-tinged country; and straight R&B; and blues covers. Head was also an excellent entertainer, and his live shows of the period even included some fancy footwork clearly under the influence of James Brown. (by Ron Wynn & Richie Unterberger)traxfromwax:

THE WILDEBEESTS "Annie Get Your GNU"

The band that features (ex)-members of the MILKSHAKES, KAISERS and THANES, can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and at anytime.
A Gnu-sound classic and bluesy beat-punk masterpiece.
Look out, here come those Wildebeests again with a whole new bunch of tunes to make you the listener perk up and take heed. Whether it be 'rivvum and bloos', 'tank pok', 'instro-mental larkabout', or 'skewed sick-stays styled beat-noise', these Lairds can KO with the best of them, fuck it, let's make with the fact that The Wildebeests, the band that features (ex)-members of the MILKSHAKES, KAISERS and THANES, can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and at anytime. After a pile of single, EP and album releases on Norton Records, Sympathy For The Record Industry and Smartguy Records in the US the Wildebeests have returned to Germany and Screaming Apple (who coincidently released their first single way back in 1995) to release this the groups 4th long-player and has taken many a long long while to arrive (often thought to have been lost in the peat bogs deep in the Tripe valley) and for that you have not to thank the efforts of the 3 goons who, heretoforeandthereafter, should be referred to as the artists, but for the efforts of record company blunders and problemos reaching near and far across the desert-scapes of days, nights, weeks, nay months I say, bouncing here and there almost resulting in a veritable record label tennis! The Lairds of the Boss Racket themselves had almost given up hope of this LP ever seeing the needle of a record player... Holy gnu, its years now since the artists first threw this lot of rumbling artefacts onto magnetic tape after at the very least 3 long minutes of rehearsal and preparation. What could be better? Well just listen to the dim simplicity of 'Lucinda' and the untamed beauty of 'Your Mind' to say nothing of the wracked emotion of 'It Ain't Right' to get the measure of what these sensitive artists had to wade thru in order to bring their fans a steaming product of damn near perfection. LAVERNE BAKER "Real Gone Gal" (Atlantic R&B; 1953-1962)

LaVern Baker was one of the most successful female R&B; vocalists of the 1950s. In the tradition of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, Baker's blues-driven, gospel-tinged vocals paved the way for future female rock and rollers. However, unlike the more liberal 1990s, Baker rose to stardom in a decade where songs recorded by black artists were termed "race records" and thus received little airplay on radio stations. "Whitewashing" was a common practice in which white vocalists would re-record a black artist's single note for note and popularize them beyond the original version's success. Despite these barriers, particularly the incessant competition from white cover artist Georgia Gibbs, Baker succeeded. With novelty rock hits "Tweedlee Dee," "I Cried a Tear," "Bop-Ting-a-Ling" and "Jim Dandy," Baker secured her place in pop culture's collective repertoire and her role as pioneer female recording artist.traxfromwax:

The Halibuts "Life On The Bottom" 1996

"Fun, Entertaining, & Original"While it would be easy enough to stuff the Halibuts into the retro surf-band file, a quick listen to this shows them to be a top-notch instrumental combo with a propensity for handling a diverse number of styles. While the reverb stun-gun attack of the guitars veers them into retro territory, their takes on Gershwin's "Summertime" and "Istanbul" make them a band with a little more to offer when you've overdosed on every cover version of "Misirlou" there is. "MAMA’S GOT A BAG OF HER OWN" - VA

One of the coolest collections of female soul tracks we've ever seen -- a package that goes way past the obvious to bring together a range of great bits from the early 60s through the early 70s! Half the work here is quite obscure, but even the better-known tracks are still ones that don't show up that often -- and together the tunes resonate with a depth and quality that easily blows away other sets of this nature -- a great sound that goes way past easy hits and common cliches to showcase a really full range of female soul! Tons of great tracks -- with titles that include "I'm My Own Doctor" by Debbie Dovale, "Don't Stop The Wedding" by Ann Cole, "Groovin At The Go Go" by The Four Larks, "Let Me Down Easy" by Betty Lavette, "Mama's Got A Bag Of Her Own" by Anna King, "One Of Those Good For Crying Over You Days" by Clydie King, "You're No Good" by Dee Dee Warwick, "You Got Em Beat" by Soul Sisters, "Hard To Handle" by Patti Drew, "Beatmaker" by Doris, "Expressway To Your Heart" by Margo Thunder, "There's So Much Love All Around Me" by Three Degrees, "Feel Like Makin Love" by Marlena Shaw, "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" by Tina Britt, "I'm Just Not Ready For Love" by The Ikettes, and "Just Not Ready" by The Exciters. © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

The Halibuts "Chumming" 1994

Southern California's longest running & most authentic surf band spawns surf rock in the instrumental style a la Dick Dale!I don't know how many of these songs were written by Pete Curry and I don't really care... lets just say that he wrote enough to make this the best surf CD of modern times... Bar None!!! If Dick Dale is the King of Surf Guitar then Pete Curry is the King of Surf Music.Pete has single handidly lifted the entire genre from its stagnant, rif based, three chord guitar nausea to an incredibly elevated level of inspired, rif based, three chord guitar brilliance.Whether its Pete's Guitar playing on Halibuts CD's.His Bass playing with the Nightriders and Los Straight Jackets or his Drumming for everybody from the HillBilly Soul Surfers to Dave Allen there is one thread that follows him through all his writing and recording... Genius! The good old American kind of genius...the 90% perspiration 10% inspiration kind of Genius! All of his songs have an attention to compositional detail, to playing quality and (on the tunes that he has enginered and produced) attention to sound! These ingredients alone don't make good listening, but add what I consider Curry's forte and you have an A+ ,10 on a scale of 10 CD. Pete's Secret? ...Fun! No pretense... No Pompous whining... No self-indulgence. Just.... "Man this is a great day, life is great,I'm glad to be alive listening to these tunes" ... fun music! from amazonThe Halibuts:

"The Bombay Jazz Palace" VA

John Coltrane was obsessed with India; Miles Davis would stay up for days on end listening to his tabla player; Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck and Stan Getz all spent several months in Bombay in the 1950s; Charles Mingus had his ashes scattered in the Ganges. For decades, jazz musicians have bought into the modes, polyrhythms and extended time signatures of Indian music. This collection samples the fruits of these Indo-jazz fusions recorded by Indophile Westerners and jazz-literate Indians alike -- both the exotic and the intellectual, the rootsy and the genteel, the ethereal and the seriously funky. Dig the patter of the tablas, the purr of the tamboura and the liquid funk of the sitar as you enter the Bombay Jazz Palace...
We at Outcaste have dug deep to bring you The Bombay Jazz Palace, a retrospective snapshot of the long gone venue that played host to this new sound - collecting some of the most famed tracks to come out of this era. Sitars and trumpets, tablas and jazz snares, composed by true musical innovators including the jazz guitar/sitar style of Volker Kriegel, the kitsch piano scats of Dave Mackay & Vicky Hamilton and the blaxploitation tabla beats of Lalo Schifrin. (liner notes)
Released 31st July on Outcaste Records. Harv & Sunny (aka Sutrasonic) at Outcaste Records invite you along to the Bombay Jazz Palace, where a delightful array of Eastern influenced, down-tempo jazz/electronica is waiting upon your arrival. So no, its not some exotic porn den - you're only going to get jazz 'n table at this hotel. Worth a look in. - liner notes
