In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Vanuatu.

1. The ancient practice of land-diving (bungee jumping) originated on Pentecost Island. The goal was to land close enough to the ground to just graze it with hair or shoulder. For those who survived, this proved their manhood and ensured a good yam harvest for the following season.
2. The last reported act of cannibalism was in 1969, on the island of Malekula. I really have to stress the word reported here, for obvious reasons. I will probably stay away from this island if I can.
3. A nambas is a traditional penis sheath from Vanuatu. Namba are wrapped around the penis of the wearer, sometimes as their only clothing.Two tribes on Malakula, the Big Nambas and the Smol (Small) Nambas, are named for the size of their nambas.
4. The arrival of Americans during World War II, with their informal habits and relative wealth, contributed to the rise of nationalism in the islands. The belief in a mythical messianic figure named John Frum was the basis for an indigenous cargo cult (a movement attempting to obtain industrial goods through magic) promising Melanesian deliverance. Today, John Frum is both a religion and a political party with a member in Parliament.
5. The Vanuatu group of islands first had contact with Europeans in 1606 when the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, working for the Spanish Crown, arrived on Espiritu Santo and called it La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo or “The Southern Land of the Holy Spirit”. He thought he had arrived in Terra Australis or Australia. Europeans did not return until 1768, when Louis Antoine de Bougainville rediscovered the islands. In 1774, Captain Cook named the islands the New Hebrides, a name that would last until independence in 1980.
6. Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu and is located on the island of Efate. Its population in the last census (2009) was 44,040, an increase of 50% on the previous census result (29,356 in 1999). The city suffered massive damage from a category 5 cyclone named Cyclone Pam in March 2015, whose eye wall passed just to the east of Port Vila.
7. There are several active volcanoes in Vanuatu, including Lopevi, Mount Yasur, and several underwater volcanoes. Volcanic activity is common, with an ever-present danger of a major eruption. Vanuatu has relatively frequent earthquakes. Of the 58 M7 or greater events that occurred between 1909 and 2001, few were studied. Tropical cyclones are also quite frequent.

Vanuatu (English 
i/ˌvɑːnuːˈɑːtuː/ vah-noo-AH-too or /vænˈwɑːtuː/ van-WAH-too; Bislama IPA: [vanuaˈtu]), officially the Republic of Vanuatu (French: République de Vanuatu, Bislama: Ripablik blong Vanuatu), is a Pacific island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is some 1,750 kilometres (1,090 mi) east of northern Australia, 500 kilometres (310 mi) northeast of New Caledonia, east of New Guinea, southeast of the Solomon Islands, and west of Fiji.
Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesian people. The first Europeans to visit the islands were a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Fernandes de Queirós, who arrived on the largest island in 1606. He then claimed the archipelago for Spain, as part of the colonial Spanish East Indies, and named it Austrialia del Espiritu Santo.
In the 1880s, France and Great Britain claimed parts of the archipelago, and in 1906 they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago as the New Hebrides through a British–French Condominium. An independence movement arose in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was founded in 1980.

Fact
A fact is something that has really occurred or is actually the case. The usual test for a statement of fact is verifiability—that is, whether it can be demonstrated to correspond to experience. Standard reference works are often used to check facts. Scientific facts are verified by repeatable careful observation or measurement (by experiments or other means).
Etymology and usage
The word fact derives from the Latin factum, and was first used in English with the same meaning: a thing done or performed, a meaning now obsolete. The common usage of "something that has really occurred or is the case" dates from the middle of the sixteenth century.
Fact is sometimes used synonymously with truth, as distinct from opinions, falsehoods, or matters of taste. This use is found in such phrases as, "It is a fact that the cup is blue" or "Matter of fact", and "... not history, nor fact, but imagination." Filmmaker Werner Herzog distinguishes clearly between the two, claiming that "Fact creates norms, and truth illumination."

Constitution of Vanuatu
The Constitution of Vanuatu is the supreme law of the Republic of Vanuatu. It was enacted in 1979, and came into force upon the country's independence on 30 July 1980.
The Constitution asserts Vanuatu to be a "sovereign democratic state", with sovereignty vested in "the people of Vanuatu which they exercise through their elected representatives". The Constitution enumerates certain "fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual", establishes a basic citizenship law, and establishes and regulates the country's major political, judicial, and cultural institutions. Amongst the latter are the President; unicameral Parliament; an advisory National Council of Chiefs; the Prime Minister directly elected by Parliament; the Supreme Court; and the Court of Appeal. Bislama, English, and French are declared to be the country's "official languages", with English and French as the "principal languages of education".
The electoral franchise is guaranteed as "universal, equal and secret", and in principle is extended to all adults aged 18 years or older. Members of the National Council of Chiefs are to be "elected by their peers". An unusual feature of the Constitution is that the President is elected by an electoral college, made up of members of Parliament and the chairpersons of the local government councils.

Facts in Five: The Game of Knowledge is a trivia game for two or more players. It was originally published in 1964 by Advanced Ideas Co of Arlington, Massachusetts. In 1967, Facts in Five was acquired by the 3M Company for its bookshelf game series. In 1976, 3M divested its game business to Avalon Hill of Baltimore, which published it until 1998, when it disbanded. Hasbro bought the rights to Avalon Hill's games, but stopped publishing Facts in Five; the rights reverted to the game's inventor, Rick Onanian. In 2007, a new edition was published by University Games.
The game is based on the parlor game Categories. Onanian got the idea for the game after reading in the newspaper supplement This Week that Categories was the favorite word game of the recently deceased President John F. Kennedy.
Each game set included a number of cards, each containing one or more Class; within each Class may be one or more Category. The game also included tiles, one for each letter of the alphabet, a five-minute sand timer, and scorecards.

Here in Vanuatu, the traditional cultures are so very important, and they're still very much alive among the Melanesian people. Custom and tradition have been thriving for centuries and ensure respect within communities. One of these such customs is the drinking of Kava. Kava isn't a food, but plays a significant part in Vanuatu cultural society. Kava is a derivative of the Pepper Tree family, and the drinking of Kava takes place in a Nakamal. There are different types of Kava all throughout the South Pacific. But the Kava from Vanuatu is prized above all others. Traditionally the Nakamal used to be strictly for the men only. But now, on most of the islands, women can go along as well. This is all part of the natural progression. So here at the local Nakamal, a large shell of Kava will set you back 100 Bartok, and a small shell is only 50 Bartok, and that's all I'll need. They tell me that the chief of the village will use Kava to relax and unwind before making an important decision for his people. If only our leaders in the western world would do the same. 1. The ancient practice of land-diving (bungee jumping) originated on Pentecost Island. The goal was to land close enough to the ground to just graze it with hair or shoulder. For those who survived, this proved their manhood and ensured a good yam harvest for the following season.
2. The last reported act of cannibalism was in 1969, on the island of Malekula. I really have to stress the word reported here, for obvious reasons. I will probably stay away from this island if I can.
3. A nambas is a traditional penis sheath from Vanuatu. Namba are wrapped around the penis of the wearer, sometimes as their only clothing.Two tribes on Malakula, the Big Nambas and the Smol (Small) Nambas, are named for the size of their nambas.
4. The arrival of Americans during World War II, with their informal habits and relative wealth, contributed to the rise of nationalism in the islands. The belief in a mythical messianic figure named John Frum was the basis for an indigenous cargo cult (a movement attempting to obtain industrial goods through magic) promising Melanesian deliverance. Today, John Frum is both a religion and a political party with a member in Parliament.
5. The Vanuatu group of islands first had contact with Europeans in 1606 when the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, working for the Spanish Crown, arrived on Espiritu Santo and called it La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo or “The Southern Land of the Holy Spirit”. He thought he had arrived in Terra Australis or Australia. Europeans did not return until 1768, when Louis Antoine de Bougainville rediscovered the islands. In 1774, Captain Cook named the islands the New Hebrides, a name that would last until independence in 1980.
6. Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu and is located on the island of Efate. Its population in the last census (2009) was 44,040, an increase of 50% on the previous census result (29,356 in 1999). The city suffered massive damage from a category 5 cyclone named Cyclone Pam in March 2015, whose eye wall passed just to the east of Port Vila.
7. There are several active volcanoes in Vanuatu, including Lopevi, Mount Yasur, and several underwater volcanoes. Volcanic activity is common, with an ever-present danger of a major eruption. Vanuatu has relatively frequent earthquakes. Of the 58 M7 or greater events that occurred between 1909 and 2001, few were studied. Tropical cyclones are also quite frequent.

Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it.

Hi I'm Amelia Armistead and you're watching the lifestyle channel on Vanuatu TV. Here in Vanuatu, the traditional cultures are so very important, and they're still very much alive among the Melanesian people. Custom and tradition have been thriving for centuries and ensure respect within communities. One of these such customs is the drinking of Kava. Kava isn't a food, but plays a significant part in Vanuatu cultural society. Kava is a derivative of the Pepper Tree family, and the drinking of Kava takes place in a Nakamal. There are different types of Kava all throughout the South Pacific. But the Kava from Vanuatu is prized above all others. Traditionally the Nakamal used to be strictly for the men only. But now, on most of the islands, women can go along as well. This is all part of the natural progression. So here at the local Nakamal, a large shell of Kava will set you back 100 Bartok, and a small shell is only 50 Bartok, and that's all I'll need. They tell me that the chief of the village will use Kava to relax and unwind before making an important decision for his people. If only our leaders in the western world would do the same. We spent 12 wonderful days on Espiritu Santo, the largest island in the Vanuatu archipelago. Diving, hiking, caving, canyoning, kayaking and snorkelling are just some of the activities available in this South Pacific gem. Impressive as its natural attractions may be, it's the charming, relaxed Ni-Vanuatu who make it such a great place to visit.

Vanuatu, officially the Republic of Vanuatu (French: République de Vanuatu, Bislama: Ripablik blong Vanuatu), is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is some 1,750 kilometres (1,090 mi) east of northern Australia, 500 kilometres (310 mi) north-east of New Caledonia, west of Fiji, and south of the Solomon Islands. Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesian people. Europeans began to settle in the area in the late 18th century. In the 1880s France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the country and in 1906 they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago through a British-French Condominium as the New Hebrides. An independence movement was established in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was created in 1980...

Most visitors to Vanuatu arrive at the nation’s capital, Port Vila, situated on the main island of Efate. Vila, as it’s affectionately known, sits at the edge of a magnificent natural harbor filled with corals and sea life.
Like many South Pacific ports, Vila is wonderfully relaxed, so leave your designer gear at home, pull on some flip flops and slide into island time.
Just a ten-minute drive from port Vila, is Ekasup Cultural Village, where proud villagers are waiting to share their centuries-old customs, crafts, music and stories.
From Vila, take a 50-minute flight to Espiritu Santo. At the island’s sleepy capital Luganville, stock up on supplies at the markets, before venturing off to explore the island’s natural wonders.
After exploring mainland Santo, visit the islands off its southern coast, such as Aore Island, Bokissa Island and Malo Island.
Just a 45-minute flight south from Port Vila, Tanna Island is fringed with beaches ranging from pure white to black volcanic sands. Many of the hillside villages on Tanna remain largely unaffected by the trappings of the modern world. Feel the earth shake on Mt. Yasur, one of the world’s most active and accessible volcanoes.
After experiencing the warmth and generosity of Vanuatu’s people, it’s easy to feel that Vanuatu could be one of richest places on earth.

There are around 190 thousand people living in the archipelago. Even though the Americans brought the modern world to the islands during the Second World War, most of the inhabitants still live in the jungle.
Christianity is the most widespread religion but the old belief in Voodoo and witches’ priests still continues. There are over one hundred languages spoken here.

I had so much fun in Vanutau!
If you are wondering why my brother got scars, its because the tide pushed him into the coral. I stayed at two different resorts while I was there (Island Magic Resort and Holiday Inn).
I put so much effort into this video so I would appreciate just a simple thumbs up, it would make my day!

Vanuatu is an island archipelago consisting of approximately 82 relatively small, geologically newer islands of volcanic origin (65 of them inhabited), with about 800 miles (1,300 km) north to south distance between the outermost islands.[2] Two of these islands (Matthew and Hunter) are also claimed by the French overseas department of New Caledonia. Fourteen of Vanuatu's islands have surface areas of more than 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi). From largest to smallest, these are Espiritu Santo, Malakula, Efate, Erromango, Ambrym, Tanna, Pentecost, Epi, Ambae or Aoba, Vanua Lava, Gaua, Maewo, Malo, and Anatom or Aneityum. The nation's largest towns are the capital Port Vila, situated on Efate, and Luganville on Espiritu Santo.[3] The highest point in Vanuatu is Mount Tabwemasana, at 1,879 metres (6,160 ft), on the island of Espiritu Santo.
