La Sagrada Familia:
The Sagrada Famillia is arguably the most recognisable aspect of Barcelona’s skyline; however, you may not know of the bizarre methods used to create it. When Antonio Gaudi was designing the Nativity Façade, in order to perfect the shape of his sculptures, he would temporarily sedate turkeys and chickens, as well as use the corpses of stillborn babies. He is even recorded as having hoisted a live donkey up the façade of the church to see what it would look like in the nativity scene.
The Eiffel Tower?
Whilst the Eiffel Tower is regarded as the ultimate Parisian symbol, it was originally meant for Barcelona. When Gustave Eiffel proposed the project to the city, they rejected him believing that the now globally iconic tower would end up looking like an eyesore.
Caga Tio:
If you’re ever in Barcelona during the Christmas period, then you’ll probably encounter the curious Catalan tradition of Caga Tió … also known as the Poo Log. This small and smiley fellow is cared for by children in the run up to Christmas, in the hope that he will poo out lots of presents for them on Christmas Eve. And, he had better not disappoint, for – as a Catalan song translates – “If you don't want to poo, We will hit you with a stick."
La Rambla:
La Rambla is one of the busiest streets in Barcelona, with an estimated 150,000 people passing through it every day. It is also a hotspot for street performers, meaning that in recent years the number of these living statues has been limited to just 15 to prevent tourists from blocking the narrow streets. These well-practised street artists are creepily static, that is until they are given away by a twitch of a nose or blink of an eye.
El Raval:
If you happen to come across this seemingly innocent hole in the wall found in the heart of El Raval, then you may be surprised to learn of its purpose. Originally attached to the House of Mercy, this is not simply a decorative window, but rather a wooden turntable used to drop off donations for the church, including unwanted infants. Active from 1853 to 1931, this curious portal saw hundreds of babies enter the orphanage.

El Clásico (Spanish pronunciation: [el ˈklasiko]; Catalan: El Clàssic,pronounced: [əɫ ˈkɫasik]; "The Classic") is the name given in football to any match between fierce rivals Real Madrid C.F. and F.C. Sagrada Família
The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (Catalan pronunciation: [səˈɣɾaðə fəˈmiɫiə]; English: Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family) is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop.
Construction of Sagrada Família had commenced in 1882 and Gaudí became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.
Sagrada Família's construction progressed slowly, as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, only to resume intermittent progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining and an anticipated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death.

La Sagrada Familia:
The Sagrada Famillia is arguably the most recognisable aspect of Barcelona’s skyline; however, you may not know of the bizarre methods used to create it. When Antonio Gaudi was designing the Nativity Façade, in order to perfect the shape of his sculptures, he would temporarily sedate turkeys and chickens, as well as use the corpses of stillborn babies. He is even recorded as having hoisted a live donkey up the façade of the church to see what it would look like in the nativity scene.
The Eiffel Tower?
Whilst the Eiffel Tower is regarded as the ultimate Parisian symbol, it was originally meant for Barcelona. When Gustave Eiffel proposed the project to the city, they rejected him believing that the now globally iconic tower would end up looking like an eyesore.
Caga Tio:
If you’re ever in Barcelona during the Christmas period, then you’ll probably encounter the curious Catalan tradition of Caga Tió … also known as the Poo Log. This small and smiley fellow is cared for by children in the run up to Christmas, in the hope that he will poo out lots of presents for them on Christmas Eve. And, he had better not disappoint, for – as a Catalan song translates – “If you don't want to poo, We will hit you with a stick."
La Rambla:
La Rambla is one of the busiest streets in Barcelona, with an estimated 150,000 people passing through it every day. It is also a hotspot for street performers, meaning that in recent years the number of these living statues has been limited to just 15 to prevent tourists from blocking the narrow streets. These well-practised street artists are creepily static, that is until they are given away by a twitch of a nose or blink of an eye.
El Raval:
If you happen to come across this seemingly innocent hole in the wall found in the heart of El Raval, then you may be surprised to learn of its purpose. Originally attached to the House of Mercy, this is not simply a decorative window, but rather a wooden turntable used to drop off donations for the church, including unwanted infants. Active from 1853 to 1931, this curious portal saw hundreds of babies enter the orphanage.

This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. The Museu Marítim is situated in the royal dockyards of Drassanes, that were built when the city was at its zenith. Its buildings are unique examples of Gothic architecture and the vast dimensions of the dockyard allowed 30 ships to be built simultaneously in the name of the Catalonian-Aragon crown.
Few parks are as famous as the Park Güell. With this, Antoni Gaudi created a new design concept in this fabulous garden city. At its entrance, Gaudi placed a colorful lizard as a symbol of the water that is collected in subterranean cisterns and is used for the distribution of water in the park. The city itself is also featured in Gaudi's magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.
Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

The Barri Gòtic (Catalan for "Gothic Quarter") is the center of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Catalan modernista architecture (related to the movement known as Art Nouveau in the rest of Europe), developed between 1885 and 1950 and left an important legacy in Barcelona. Several of these buildings are World Heritage Sites. Especially remarkable is the work of architect Antoni Gaudí, which can be seen throughout the city. His best-known work is the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Família, which has been under construction since 1882, and is still financed by private donations. As of 2007, completion is planned for 2026.
Barcelona was also home to Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion. Designed in 1929 for the International Exposition for Germany, it is an iconic building that came to symbolize modern architecture as the embodiment of van der Rohe's aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details." The Barcelona pavilion was intended as a temporary structure, and was torn down in 1930 less than a year after it was constructed. A modern re-creation by Spanish architects now stands in Barcelona, however, constructed in 1986.
Barcelona won the 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture,the first (and as of 2015, only) time that the winner has been a city, and not an individual architect.

Palau de la Música Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, included in the UNESCO Heritage List in 1997.
Works by Antoni Gaudí, including Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milà (La Pedrera), Casa Vicens, Sagrada Família (Nativity façade and crypt), Casa Batlló, Crypt in Colonia Güell. The first three works were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1984. The other four were added as extensions to the site in 2005.

The total park surface grows about 10 ha per year, with a proportion of 18.1 square metres of park area per inhabitant

Upon my first visit to Barcelona we decided to celebrate our mom's birthday so the whole family came down. We stayed at Placa Reial on the famous La Rambla pedestrian street downtown Barcelona.
The most important advise I can give you about Barcelona; it is a very busy and boiling hot city in the summer, so you may want to consider visiting Barcelona in fall when the weather is a bit cooler.
My favorite places included the Barri Gothic known for its classical gothic architecture, the massive olympic park from the 1992 summer olympics, the largest public market in Catalonia called Mercado de la Boqueria and the delicious dishes at Bo de B.
Does Barcelona have return value? YES!

Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame.
First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. The axis upon which the project spun was the idea to “turn Barcelona around“‘ to face the sea, creating whole swathes of beach from virtual wasteland.
Before the Civil War gripped Barcelona, one architect shaped it more than any other – and he was Antonio Gaudi. Although categorized with the Art Nouveau movement, Gaudi created an entirely original style and she takes in numerous examples of his work all over Barcelona, taking in Park Guell, and Casa Batlló and the spectacular Sagrada Familia, a large Roman Catholic basilica which is still under construction 120 years after the first brick was laid. In the Maritime Museum she learns all about Barcelona’s fascinating seafaring history. Meanwhile, at the Miró Foundation art gallery she marvels at one of the artist’s “wild paintings”entitled “Man and Woman in front of a Pile of Excrement”. Next off, she hits the Museu Picasso - the most visited art gallery in Barcelona which caters to approximately 1 million visitors annually and houses the largest collection of Picasso’s work in the world.
Next off, Megan indulges in some retail therapy taking in the iconic Las Ramblas - “rambla” means “torrent” in Arabic and it seems this boulevard was once a dried watercourse, paved over for public use in the Middle Ages. Her shopping trip ends at they city harbour where she takes in the colourful atmosphere of street performers, artists, and street vendors. She explores the Barrí Gotic - or Gothic Area - which combines the best of both worlds: shopping and culture. This the original Roman centre of Barcelona is home to bizarre antique shops, old bookshops, and thriving young fashion designers. She window-shops culinary delights like Casa del Bacau -The House of Cod - which sells only cod. Along the way she is intrigued by a shop window draped in black curtains – the Rey de La Magia was founded by famous magician Joachim Partagas 125 years ago and has been supplying great magicians ever since.
Next, she takes a road trip out of town to Cap De Creus - a haven for migratory birds and exotic fauna, it was pronounced a natural park in 1998. She journeys on to Port Lligat near where she visits the home of the surrealist painter: Salvador Dali. Along the way she takes in the picture postcard fishing town of Cadaques where Dali used to spend his summer holidays as a child and where he produced his first paintings. Opting for a sun sea and sand session, she takes a train to Sitges which is a Mecca for the gay community. This whitewashed town is clustered around a 16th century church on a promontory called La Punta. It became a resort thanks to the annual Modernista Festival organised here in the 1890s by Catalan artist Santiago Rusinyol.
She rounds off her trip and last day in Barcelona with a cable car trip up Mount Montjuic- a lush natural paradise filled with history and art – where and visits Montjuic Castle at the very summit of the Olympic mountain. Last off, she returns to the metropolis and the El Ravalbarrio where she has a final fling with a spot of Rumba Catalana. ¡Olé!
