Alex Boyé

Alex Boyé (born 1970) is a British-born American singer and actor.

Early life

He was born in London, England in 1970. Boyé's mother and father are Nigerians. While pregnant, Boyé's mother went to London while his father remained in Nigeria. According to his own words, he never knew his father. His mother remarried and worked for London Underground, cleaning tracks at night. One day his mother said she was going to Nigeria for a couple of weeks for a visit and did not come back for eight years. Boyé was raised in the Tottenham neighbourhood that has been described as "tough.". He spent much of his youth in foster homes with Caucasian parents. As a teenager, he listened to the music of Motown, including artists Stevie Wonder, Kool and the Gang, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson and Otis Redding. When he was 16, Boyé was working in a McDonald's in London when he was introduced to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) by a manager. He was baptised soon afterward, without his mother's knowledge. Boyé first performed in public while serving as a missionary for the LDS Church in Bristol, England.

Amazing Grace

"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807).

Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (conscripted) into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. He continued his slave trading career until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology.

Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have simply been chanted by the congregation. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper's Olney Hymns but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States, however, "Amazing Grace" was used extensively during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies, but in 1835 it was joined to a tune named "New Britain" to which it is most frequently sung today.

We have to admit—this journey took us a lot further than we expected. Retracing our steps reveals several factors that made this a reality. As we started arranging it we had serious writer's block. Perhaps some of the worst we've ever had. In fact, one day instead of writing we went around the entire studio with a can of WD-40 and coated every piece of metal to ensure that we were a squeak-free studio. Then on a whim we decided to back away and take an entirely new approach to the song—an African approach. It may seem random in retrospect, but at the time it was an exciting way to restart the arrangement. It was working, but our journey still was on foot until we called in Alex Boye, one of the most talented people we've ever met. Alex has this contagious energy that gave new life to the song and to us. He sings the tune in 4 different languages: Swahili, English, Yoruba (his mother's native language), and Alex's own African "scat" (we'll call it...Scafrican) =) Most of the words you hear are translated from the lyrics in the original Coldplay Tune. We're huge fans of Alex -- We bet you are now too! When we had finished the arrangement we all agreed that listening to it was like taking a journey to somewhere remote and ruggedly beautiful. How were we to depict this... We had two options: one, wrestle a mountain rodent and harvest cacti or two, starve. Duane, our head pilot, took pity on us. He took off (literally) and moments later landed in a Wendy's parking lot, ordered 5 of everything (sadly, he couldn't use the drive through) ...took off again and brought us chicken sandwiches and hamburgers via airmail. Thank you Duane! The story: I went out of town for work and when I got back, my wife Julie told me, "You've got to hear this. She puts on the music and my little 4 year old Adanna struts and shimmies across the living room singing every single word of "Let it go" with feeling and reckless abandonment!! Along with every other kid in the country, She got "Frozenitis! My mind immediately started racing and I thought "I HAVE TO AFRICANIZE THIS!!! But it needed to have a unique twist. How cool would it be to actually have kids performing this? Seeing as they are the the biggest fans! So I called up my friend Masa Fukuda who just happens to have a 140 strong choir of the most incredible singing kids and asked if he was willing to collab on my crazy idea of doing an africanized version of frozen. awhile back, I had heard a young girl named Lexi Walker sing at a local event, and WOW, she just blew me away! I knew she would be the perfect person to sing lead on this song!! Masa is a machine!!! By the next day, he had already rounded up some choir members, produced the music, and recorded the choir in his studio. All within 2 days!!! The singing ability, discipline, and professionalism of the kids was just astounding to me! The video shoot was amazing and even though it was SO cold you couldn't feel your toes, the kids were amazing and so patient! This year, let's think outside ourselves and our friends and family and help those we do or don't know, who are struggling in some way offer some service. it doesn't always have to be money. One of my best christmases was when i went to a homeless shelter and cut hair for anybody who wanted it. i was there from 9pm til about 3am. My wrist was in pain for the next week, but, that experience was memorable! you forget about all your worries when you are focused on others. Still trying to think about what to do this year. Thinking about going to do an outdoor acoustic concert by the homeless shelter or something CAN YOU GUYS GIVE ME SOME IDEAS? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Please share in your comments section.
