The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a species of Hyaena native to North and East Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is listed by the IUCN as near-threatened, as the global population is estimated to be under 10,000 mature individuals which continues to experience deliberate and incidental persecution along with a decrease in its prey base such that it may come close to meeting a continuing decline of 10% over the next three generations.
It is the smallest of the true hyenas and retains many primitive viverrid characteristics lost in larger species, having a smaller and less specialised skull. Though primarily a scavenger, large specimens have been known to kill their own prey, and attacks on humans have occurred on rare instances. The striped hyena is a monogamous animal, with both males and females assisting one another in raising their cubs. A nocturnal animal, the striped hyena typically only emerges in complete darkness, and is quick to return to its lair before sunrise. Though it has a habit of feigning death when attacked, it has also been known to stand its ground against larger predators such as leopards in disputes over food.

While on one of our treks to visit with the Hadza people of Lake Eyasi, we heard about an active striped hyena den and decided to take a look. We climbed up the rock face, through caves and dense bush and finally found the den. I stashed a GoPro and an Olympus Stylus camera. In the morning, I was rewarded with this gorgeous footage of an animal rarely even seen by people.
Sudanese striped hyenas are nocturnal but won't pass an easy meal during the day. Neither a dog or cat family member, the mongoose and meerkat are the hyena's closest relative. Females dominantly rule over males but are also aggressive towards one another. Well known as scavengers, they can also hunt and take down large prey as a team. A hyena's keen sense of smell, vision, and hearing helps it locate a potential meal and each other. Once roaming as far east as China and Great Britain, their range is now limited to northern Africa, Middle East and Asia. Awareness: There are only 4 Northern White Rhinos on Earth, making them the most critically endangered species. This magnificent creature will vanish before our eyes... endextinction.org

In 1896, taxidermist Carl Akeley ventured to Somalia on a research expedition with Field Museum scientists, and procured a quartet of striped hyenas (among many other things). For more than six decades, these taxidermied mounts sat in an unfinished diorama case - and we wanted to do something about it! Fast forward to last year, when we launched our Indiegogo campaign, "Project Hyena Diorama." Today, thanks to more than 1,500 donors, 50+ staff, viewers of The Brain Scoop, and many many more supporters who shared and promoted Project Hyena Diorama, the Field Museum is celebrating the opening of its first full-scale habitat diorama in more than six decades. We COULD NOT have done this without your help! This was such a huge undertaking, and it was all made possible by passionate learners ...
Was assigned to the zoo hospital dept today, and had the chance of following the zoo veterinarian and other veterinary staff on their rounds around the zoo after the morning chores. It was my lucky day, I suppose, as we had guest officers from Hamilton Zoo, NZ, visiting Zoo Negara.... So I had the wonderful privilege then to meet these three lovely female juvenile striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena), and show them to our guests. Pinkie, Yellow and Blu were personally hand-reared and raised by our zoo veterinarian, Dr Blanca. It was just great being able to see Dr Blanca (the woman in the light brown cap with the camera) and the close bond she shared with these animals, and how much love and devotion she had poured into them. Had so much fun having playtime with them, chasing them and running w...
