South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Friday marks a year since 34 miners were shot dead by police in the South African town of Marikana in a dispute over wages. Mine unions say there has been little improvement since then. South Africa's economy has long been driven by mining but production has dropped over the decades. Mark Lowen was given rare access into a gold mine to see what conditions are like and to follow the mining process
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...

“Visions of Gold” is a short color film on “Gold! The thread from which we weave our dreams! The key to stability!” Produced by South African film maker Emil Nofal in the mid-1960s, the film opens with rows of gold bars as the narrator Joe Stewardson explains how (in1 885) itinerant prospectors George Walker, along with George Harrison, stumbled on surface outcrops of gold-rich conglomerate on an old farm near the Witwatersrand basin —land that is now near the center of Johannesburg. (Both men quickly sold their claims for the equivalent of a few hundred dollars. Today, the gold fields in the region are worth billions.) From across the world, prospectors descended on South Africa in search of gold, as we see throngs of prospectors and opportunists starting at mark 02:45. Spurred on by visi...

www.imaker.ca CLIFFS NATURAL RESOURCES MINING IN CANADA Stainless steel - a material most of us take for granted. Because of this extraordinary metal, we have sophisticated medical instruments, buildings, refineries, and infrastructure. But what gives stainless steel its impressive heat and corrosion-resistant properties, and glossy appearance? A unique mineral called chromite. Chromite can only be added to the steelmaking process after it is combined with a fluxing agent and carbon reductant, to create an alloy known as ferrochrome. Currently, most chromite products needed to supply worldwide stainless steel demand are produced in Kazakhstan, South Africa and India - countries with abundant chromite deposits. China has significant ferrochrome furnace capacity, but lacks the qualit...

Founded 18 years ago, Design Indaba [link] has grown to be the world's biggest design conference, drawing speakers from around the world and spawning an Expo showcasing South African creativity, a music festival and a film festival. Naidoo explains that he started Design Indaba in 1994 as an attempt to shift the economic discussion in post-Apartheid South Africa away from mining and tourism and instead promote the economic value of "ideas and intellectual capital". "We wanted to create a platform that would help to inspire [design in South Africa]", he explains. "This was an opportunity for...

In Defence of Life follows the struggles and triumphs of four communities resisting large-scale mining projects in Colombia, the Philippines, South Africa and Romania. Courageous environmental and human rights defenders from these communities describe how they have suffered and why they are standing firm to protect their families, land, water and life from destruction by mining. Their inspiring David and Goliath struggles demonstrate that when injustice and destruction become globalised, so does resistance. South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...

promotional video is similar to South Africa's 2014 tourism video MANILA -- Hours after the Department of Tourism launched a promotional video in a new tourism campaign, social media users noticed its resemblance to the one released by South Africa in 2014 that went viral. Both videos feature a blind man, who is experiencing the world through senses other than sight. In both tourism campaign videos, the man's disability is not revealed until the end when he pulls out a walking cane.

Arriving in the Victoria West area on our first day of our timelapse trip to the Karoo South Africa, we were anxious to scout some locations to get shooting as soon as possible. It was now evident that there was indeed a heatwave passing through the country... As soon as we decided where to shoot first, we didn’t waste any time to unpack our equipment. I don’t think we realized just how much gear we had until we started hiking up these rocky hills, solar panel and all! It took several hikes to get everything up to the spot where we wanted to shoot. And once the shooting started, it didn’t stop. We had two cameras firing away, mostly one on a Shukuma DOLLY and one on a Shukuma MINI. Much planning is required for any timelapse shots, keeping various factors in consideration and this w...

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. In contrast to Johannesburg, ...

http://www.TheExpeditioner.com Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of the world's best places for wildlife viewing. In this video I go in search of lion, while also catching glimpses of giraffes, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, hyenas, and baboons.
In Fall of 2009, I hunted black wildebeest in Africa in order to again "meet my meat." My wonderful guide was Chris Bolton, of Zungah Safaris, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After the hunt, we transported the meat to a well-known Cape Town Chef, Pete Goff, of The Kitchen Cowboys. This was a very emotional experience for me and my friend, Sonja Kroop, who was shooting most of the footage. We had not anticipated the hunt nor filming, when we arrived to visit a friend in Cape Town, so the footage quality is old mini-dv, not high quality HD. Some viewers may find this to be GRAPHIC CONTENT, as it shows the killing of an animal for food.
13 x 24min Travel Series "Take a walk on the wild side and see what lies...below" Below the Belt is the massive South African hit 13x 24min, "cheeky adult variety series" , hosted by the "world famous" Baroness Coral von Reefenhausen, the program takes an irreverent and risqué look at sex, and alternative culture in South Africa. The Baroness tackles subjects including pornography, S&M;, swinging, prostitution, traditional African sex therapies, gay nightlife and other topics 'hidden' in the underworlds of Johannesburg and beautiful Cape Town. Touring in her limo (driven by Gino, her stud driver and cohort) from nudist beaches to pick-up joints, the Baroness chats to ordinary people she encounters; both those in search of a good time as well as those that provide these services. She ask...
After my safari in South Africa I hitched a ride to Tofo, Mozambique, a sleepy fishing village on the Indian Ocean known for its great beaches and amazing diving. In this video I head underwater to check out the local population of manta rays, whale sharks, and coral life; meet up with some new friends who make their living selling art in town; and recuperate from a bout of malaria I unfortunately caught while there.
This is the fourth video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We interview Jennifer Aston, from WHL (http://www.southafricahotel-link.com/) and ask her how she views the position of responsible tourism in South Africa, and any practical tips she can provide to help people to reduce their negative impact. We then meet with a local friend and tour guide (Siviwe Mbinda) for walking tour around Langa - the first black township in Cape Town. He explains the history from apartheid to current day, and how tourism has helped benefit the local community. We even share a beer and watch a soccer game in a shebeen with the locals. In South Africa the word ‘township’ refers to a residential area for black Africans and Coloureds that segr...
I traveled to Kruger National Park, South Africa with the Board of Directors & Scientists from the Palm Beach Zoo, FL. In this video clip, Frankie, our guide from Tinga Lodge, leads us on an early morning (6 am) game drive. We had the unexpected pleasure to encounter LIONS! We chose to travel to South Africa in the middle of winter (which was freezing for us South Floridians) but best for viewing wildlife due to the lack of foliage. This was a science mission since the Palm Beach Zoo seeks to expand it's African wildlife collection. National Geographic has spoiled all of us with never before scenes of wildlife encounters with photographers camped out in the wild for weeks or months. We were giddy with exhilaration just to be in Africa and get ANY encounters! Driving through the Afri...

This is the third video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We meet with a local friend and tour guide (Shaqir Erasmus) for a local breakfast and hike up Lion's Head (Part of the Table Mountain National Park). From a geographical and natural perspective, he explains the wildlife, scenery and history. From the times of when the Khoikhoi (indigenous peoples who inhabited the area since the 5th Century AD) ran their cattle along the tracks of the mountain, to the endangered floral species such as the Silver Tree. We manage to meet the mountain ranger who also gives us a few tips and advice on safety. Don't forget to bring your water bottle guys! Along the journey, we will also provide our message and discovery, including some u...
On January 14th, 2010, Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP), also known as Jabba, one of South Africa's leading Hip Hop artists for the last decade, will travel to Washington, D.C. for a two-week “Artist-In-Bloom” residency at BloomBars, a Washington-based non-profit organization that works to inspire and unite communities through the arts while nurturing artists committed to serving the community. As the situation in South Africa worsens day to day, it is becoming increasingly more likely that a race war is the final outcome of this horrendous struggle. Cultural Marxism propagated by Western institutions, along with the newly introduced social justice culture is poisoning race-relations in African countries, especially that of South Africa. If you think I'm exaggerating just how bad the animosity is towards Whites and other non-Africans is in South Africa, just wait until this video is descended upon by racists saying things like "fuck Whites!" or "Whites should go extinct!" This video is not trying to inflame tensions, nor am I putting blame directly onto the native South Africans. However, this growing trend of hatred and racism towards Whites is greatly concerning to say the l...

And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings. Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces. Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
