Atomic Swing "Bossanova Swap Meet" 1994
About as good as their brilliant debut.People often think A Car Crash in the Blue is Atomic Swing's masterpiece if one exists. I don't think so. The debut album was OK, but short of real ideas, repeating itself (and especially the drum beat) again ang again and again. Bossanova Swap Meet is a different story. First, let me praise the title track. It takes a bit from the 1960s psychedelia, something from 1970s glam, a slice of 1990s indie rock, and cooks a meal that is one of the best ever served. The ultimate psychedelic song, ever? Possibly. Compared to the song "Bossanova Swap Meet", the rest of the album may first seem almost lame. But after all it isn't so; "Suburban Wing" plays with minor and major chord changes very cleverly, "Like a John Needs a Yoko" sure rocks and contains one of the best guitar solos ever (even repeated in the song ending! Yum!), "Envy Moon" is a wonderful lounge gem, et cetera. And, listening the album thoroughly, it is easy to find out that on the whole album there is no song which isn't good, at least. Check this out if you like rock music that is exciting, intensive, and well, psychedelic. - fairyeeeAtomic Swing:

Atomic Swing "A Car Crash In The Blue" 1993
It's a small country, Sweden. Maybe too small for the swedish Todd Rundgren! "In The Dust" is a killer. "Stone Me Into The Groove" was the hit. "Smile" figured in some commercials. "Panicburgh City" rocked. Great guitar playing from Mr Frisk.
ANOTHER GREAT ONE FROM VOLVOLAND!Atomic Swing was founded in 1992, when singer / guitarist Niclas Frisk left Perssons Pack and decided to form his own band. He was joined by keyboardist Micke Lohse, drummer Henrik Berglund and bassist Petter Dahlstrom, and in September 1992, the first single, "Stone Me Into The Groove," was released. On the single you could hear the sound that Atomic Swing were to be associated by: guitar- and organ based pop, with heavy influences from the seventies pop movement and the lighter side of psychedelic pop. "Stone Me Into The Groove" was a big hit in Sweden, and when the album, A Car Crash In The Blue, was released in February 1993 the critics was overwhelmed. It sold 100,000 copies (which is a lot in Sweden), and also spawned the semi-hit singles "Smile," "In the Dust" and "Panicburgh City." As many other Swedish bands at this time, Atomic Swing also made it big in Asia, especially Japan, which lead to heavy touring in the eastern parts of the world. Actually, Atomic Swing was one of the first Swedish bands that made success in Japan, and was soon to be followed by bands like Eggstone, the Cardigans and This Perfect Day. In 1994, Atomic Swing got two Grammy Awards for A Car Crash in the Blue, and the rest of that year, they spent in the studio, recording the eagerly awaited follow-up album.Atomic Swing:

The Troggs "Hit Single Anthology" 1991
Love is all around these wild things, flipping over the first 9 singles and their flipsides. The review title refers to what this CD consists of: This influential band's first 9 singles along with their flipsides chronologically ordered. I gave this CD five stars because even the flipsides are great (e.g., "I Want You", "As I Ride By"). Simple and raw mostly. Caveman rock (a precursor to the punk sound). Other influences? "Give It To Me" sounds like a pre-evolved Bay City Roller's "Saturday Night." Also: a Troggs session was recorded with the band bickering in the studio (available elsewhere as the Trogg Tapes), which supposedly became the inspiration for the movie "Spinal Tap." I mention this only because "Love is All Around" reminds me of Tap's "Flower People" and the rest of the CD sounds like 60's alternatives to "Big Bottom." Not necessarily the music, but the mind-set is pretty much in the same place. Much more than "Wild Thing," but more of the same, as well. - By Tad Nastic "Tad" (place USA)

The Chocolate Watchband "The Inner Mystique" 1968
The first 3 tracks really shines, and these three raga-psychedelic music are excellent examples of music of any kind.Inner Mystique is perfect for the music lover who romanticizes about the rock n roll revolution of the Sixties. With each listen, Inner Mystique sucks you into the portal of what the Sixties were all about politically, socially, and musically. It's rebellious; it's innovative; it's electric Bob Dylan; it's Byrds-esque at times. Truly, Inner Mystique is a masterpiece, a classic, that all rock n roll lovers should have in their collections. - By "merrygold" (MD, USA)

The Chocolate Watchband "No Way Out" 1967
The Chocolate Watchband was one of the greatest unknown bands of the 1960s. They had no hits, but they managaged to release a lot of great music. They had a garage band feel, with a singer who sounded like Mick Jagger. This was their first album, which was produced by Ed Cobb, who is best known for producing those great songs by the Standells. But I guess Mr. Cobb didn't have much faith in the Chocolate Watchband, because he replaced lead singer Dave Aguilar's vocals with black session singer Don Bennett on some songs. And he added two psychedlic instrumetals that didn't actually feature the Chocolate Watchband at all. But amazingly enough, the album actually turned out pretty well. It may not be the album the group wanted, but it is still a good listen. - By Johnny Heering "trivia buff" (Bethel, CT United States)

The Del-Byzanteens "Lies To Live By" 1982
"At that time everyone in New York had a band," Jarmusch recalls. "The idea was that you didn't have to be a virtuoso musician to have a band. The spirit was more important than having technical expertise, and that influenced a lot of filmmakers." (Interview in The Washington Post, 1984)"A band that insouciantly blended high and low, virtuosity and amateurism, calypso and science fiction, pots and pans and drones and the Supremes. They released several records, on a British label, which did very well in the former Yugoslavia." -Luc SanteIn the early 1980's, Jim Jarmusch was part of a band called The Del-Byzanteens. They released a 7" single, "Draft Riot", a 12" EP, "Girl's Imagination", and one LP "Lies to Live by".The group consisted of (from left to right):
Josh Braun (Percussion, Drums), Dan Braun (Drums, Percussion), Jim Jarmusch (Vocals, Keyboards), Philippe Hagen (Bass) and Phil Kline (Vocals, Guitar)

The Cynics "Rock N Roll" 1989
Incredibly tight playing, murderous sound. Third, and loudest album from the Cynics. This one smolders all the way from start to finish with the perfect blend of garage and MC5 high energy hi-jinks! Includes searing versions of Cry, Cry, Cry (Unreleated Segments) and Last Time Around (Del-Vetts).It must be hard to name your album Rock and Roll, it's too brash a statement with the potential for promising way more than average bands can handle. Not a problem for the Cynics. This masterpiece is the very Definition of Rock and Roll. This is hands down their best album, when I got this one home on vinyl I was SHAKING. Play side 2 (er, tracks 8 through 14) first, the CD plays like a garage band opera with MUCH more impact if you start with "Baby What's Wrong", put "The Room" in the middle, kick the tension back up with "You Got The Love" and let your whole world come crashing down in the dynamics of "Cry, Cry, Cry", which features the most blood-curdling rock scream EVER. Do not attempt to debate this with me, I will not be moved! If somebody would PLEASE, GOD! re-release this and The Miracle Worker's Overdose on CD, I could die a happy man knowing kids men and women everywhere could get their hands on such glorious genius. Too good to die, ever. Reviewer: mptesteroni (enjoying much-needed R and R from Star Wars)

ART NEVILLE "Mardi Gras Rock ‘n’ Roll" 1986
Art Neville cut some of this LP’s most pertinent tracks right before serving in the Navy in the late '50s and never got the chance to properly promote the records that came out on Art Rupe's Specialty label. This compilation has that great rockin’ New Orleans flavor, making it an essential for lovers of Big Easy music. (Andrew Hamilton, AMG)traxfromwax:

Jim Basnight "We Rocked & Rolled" - 25 Years Of Jim Basnight & The Moberlys 2008
“Long before Seattle was the grunge rock capitol of America, it had a long history of rugged, tough-as-nails rock, beginning in the 1960s with garage rock stalwarts the Sonics and Wailers and culminating in the '80s with Jim Basnight and the Moberlys, a band that evoked the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at the same time, while turning out some of the decade's finest, if unfortunately obscure, New Wave pop. In truth, Seattle is only the beginning and finishing line for the band, the city which gave them their start and to which they finally returned, with a couple other musical hotbeds serving as temporary homes during the middle part of their run. Despite the aggregate's peripatetic career, they accumulated a consistently invigorating, distinctly Seattle body of work that stands as one of the finest collections of mostly unknown songs from the 1980s. - allmusic.com

GARNET MIMMS "Warm & Soulful"
Best known for his original rendition of "Cry Baby," later a major item in Janis Joplin's repertoire, Garnet Mimms' pleading, gospel-derived intensity made him one of the earliest true soul singers. His legacy remains criminally underappreciated, since for some reason he never scored another hit on the level of "Cry Baby," but his output from the early to mid-'60s -- a blend of uptown sophistication and earthy, impassioned vocals -- has earned comparisons to Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson from hardcore soul aficionados.
Mimms quickly struck gold with the proto-soul performance of "Cry Baby," a smash hit that reached the pop Top Five and topped the R&B; charts in 1963. The follow-up, a cover of Jerry Butler & the Impressions' "For Your Precious Love," hit the pop Top 40 later that year, as did the flip side, "Baby Don't You Weep." Mimms and the Enchanters parted ways in 1964; the group to record separately with a new lead vocalist, while Mimms cut solo sides for UA steadily over the next few years. Ragovoy's productions became increasingly polished, mirroring the shift in R&B; spearheaded by Motown, yet Mimms' vocals retained all the fire of his gospel training, making for a combination that was fairly unique for the time. Minor hits like "It Was Easier to Hurt Her" and "I'll Take Good Care of You" (the latter Mimms' last Top 40 hit in 1966) didn't perform nearly as well commercially as their quality seemed to indicate. In 1967, United Artists moved him to their Veep subsidiary, where "My Baby" was another inexplicable flop (it, too, was later covered by Janis Joplin on Pearl). (Steve Huey, AMG)traxfromwax:
01 cry baby 02 for your precious love 03 baby don't you weep 04 tell me baby 05 a quiet place 06 one girl 07 look away 08 a little bit of soap 09 it was easier to hurt her 10 that goes to show you 11 i'll take good care of you 12 more than a miracle 13 as long as i have you 14 it's just a matter of time 15 it's been such a long way home. 16 my baby

O.V. WRIGHT "Gone For Good" 1983
Wright began singing in church and later fronted a gospel music group, the Harmony Echoes. It was during this time that he was discovered (along with James Carr) by Roosevelt Jamison a songwriter and manager. Their first pop recording in 1964 was "That's How Strong My Love Is", an impassioned ballad later covered by Otis Redding and the Rolling Stones. It was issued on Goldwax, the label Wright signed to after leaving his gospel career. It determined that Don Robey had him under contract, due to his gospel group recorded for Peacock. After his contract was shifed to Don Robey’s Back Beat label, further R&B; hits followed, with Wright's plaintive delivery excelling on the slow material. Working with producer Willie Mitchell, success continued on songs including "The Ace of Spades" and "A Nickel and a Nail".
However, Wright was imprisoned for narcotics offences during the mid-1970s, and, despite signing for Hi Records and releasing a series of quality recordings, his commercial success failed to recover after his release. A continuing drug problem weakened his health and he died from a heart attack aged 41.traxfromwax:

Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs "Under The Covers Vol. 1" 2006
What do alt-rock/power pop heroes like Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) and Matthew Sweet do on their time off? They get together in Matthew's comfy home studio and record a stunning album of their favorite '60s pop hits and rarities, of course!Sid (Matthew Sweet, after his character's name in the Austin Powers band Ming Tea) and Susie (Susanna Hoffs, who joined him and Mike Myers in belting out "BBC" on the soundtrack) are in as fine voice as ever on Under the Covers, Vol. 1, a 15-song collection of tunes first made famous by the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Who. And man, were they born to sing this stuff. Both the Bangles and Sweet discographies are derivative--in the best possible sense--of late-'60s pop-rock, and who didn't love the Merry-Go-Round, Grass Roots, Simon & Garfunkel, and Big Star covers Hoffs and company scattered among their originals? Recorded at Sweet's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album opens strong with "I See the Rain," a Marmalade song from 1967 that Jimi Hendrix called the year's best British single but was a hit only in the Netherlands. Maybe Sweet's stinging, ringing fretwork (he plays most of the non-percussion instruments on this disc) and Hoffs's throwback vocals will rectify that, nearly 40 years later. The two proceed to nail the Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," one of the high points on Revolver, and score similarly with Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (Hoffs in full ballad mode), the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum," the Who's "The Kids Are Alright," Love's "Alone Again Or," and a pair of Neil Young numbers, "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." Some of the selections do miss the mark--Hoffs's smoky-sweet backing vocals seem a little misplaced on Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "The Warmth of the Sun" was probably the wrong Beach Boys track for Sweet to attempt (Brian Wilson himself strains at those high notes nowadays). But by and large this is a delightful power-pop excursion. Van Dyke Parks's liner notes, keyboards, and string arrangements make it that much better, as do Sweet collaborator Ric Menck's drums, Ed Fotheringham's illustrations, and Henry Diltz's photographs (Hoffs looks as stunning today as she did when laying down All Over the Place). - Benjamin Lukofftrax:

The Saints "The Monkey Puzzle" 1981
Everybody Knows the Monkey! The Monkey Puzzle, the Saints' first full-length album after the departure of founding guitarist/songwriter Ed Kuepper, is quite different from the first three Saints LPs -- which were all different from each other anyway -- but holds up well to the test of time. Instead of the abrasive punk or Memphisy sound of earlier records, Monkey Puzzle's jangly rock hints at the direction bands like R.E.M. took mid-'80s college rock. Lead singer Chris Bailey's distinctive, resonant voice shines on the gorgeous "Let's Pretend," the very Byrdsy "Always," and the incendiary "Simple Love." The Australian version also includes the classic B-side, "In the Mirror," with its highly memorable bass intro and astounding hooks, and a wonderfully sloppy and loose cover of Larry Williams' "Dizzy Miss Lizzy." Elsewhere, the fare is more conventional rock, albeit with chiming guitar, great songs, and singing. Barrington Francis' jangly guitar, original drummer Ivor Hay, and bassist Janine Hall give the band an entirely new dimension. On its release, Monkey Puzzle shocked fans with its maturity; though it was made by 21-year-old punk, most other 21-year-old punks thought it was too much like regular rock -- a sin in 1981. Since it wasn't released in the U.S. or England, not many people heard it anyway. Ironically, a few years later, bands like Guadalcanal Diary and the Connells came to the forefront using a very similar approach. Of course, by then Bailey had moved into a whole new musical space. Highly recommended. ~ Geoff Ginsberg, All Music GuideThe Saints:
