Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie, is an epic poem by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in English and published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians.
The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitating Greek and Latin classics, though the choice was criticized. It became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime and remains one of his most popular and enduring works.
The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. More recent scholarship has revealed the historical errors in the poem and the complexity of the Expulsion and those involved, which the poem ignores.
Evangeline describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near. Finally she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor. While tending the dying during an epidemic she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he dies in her arms.
The Miss World pageant is the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since his death in 2000, Morley's widow, Julia Morley, has co-chaired the pageant. Alongside with its rival, the Miss Universe and Miss Earth contests, Miss World pageant is one of the three most publicised beauty contests in the world.
The current Miss World is Mireia Lalaguna of Spain who was crowned on 19 December 2015 in Sanya, China PR.
In 1951, Eric Morley organised a bikini contest as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations which he called the Festival Bikini Contest. The event was popular with the press, and was dubbed "Miss World" by the media. The swimsuit competition was intended as a promotion for the bikini which had only recently been introduced onto the market, and which was still widely regarded as immodest. When the 1951 Miss World pageant winner, Kerstin "Kiki" Hakansson from Sweden, was crowned in a bikini, it added to the controversy.
Evangeline Pascual is a Filipino actress, artist, radio host and beauty queen who won Miss World Philippines 1973 and represented Philippines at Miss World 1973 where she placed 1st runner up.
In 1973, the 23rd annual Miss World pageant was held at the Royal Albert Hall in England. Fifty four delegates vied for the crown, with Miss United States Marjorie Wallace emerging as the winner and 17-year-old Pascual, as first runner-up. However, Wallace had to be fired from her duties as Miss World; pageant organizers extended an offer to Pascual to carry out the duties of Miss World for the remainder of the year without being officially granted the title; Evangeline Pascual was doing a movie at that time when Miss World offered her the crown. Pascual already signed a movie contract and she won't be able to fulfill her duties as Miss World so she said no to the offer, they turned to second runner-up Miss Jamaica Patsy Yuen, who accepted.
She did movies at age 18, playing lead roles with Fernando Poe, Jr. in Ang Pangalan: Mediavillo (1974), and Ramon Zamora in The Game Of Death (1974) and The Dragon Force Connection (1974). She starred also in Mission: Get The Mastermind (1975) with Roberto Gonzales, The Exit (1975) with Tony Ferrer, and Golden Chaku with Rey Malonzo.
Miss World 1973, the 23rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 23 November 1973 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. 54 delegates vied for the crown won by Marjorie Wallace of United States. She was crowned by Belinda Roma Green of Australia. Wallace won $7,200 in prize money for the first place result.
Marjorie Wallace became the first Miss USA to be crowned Miss World. The United States' representative had previously finished as first runner-up on five occasions, in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1965, and 1969. Wallace would also become the first winner not to complete her reign when she was fired in March 1974, because she had "failed to fulfill the basic requirements of the job". She was never officially replaced by any of her runners-up.
