The Federal Republic of Nigeria, commonly referred to as Nigeria i/naɪˈdʒɪəriə/, is a federal constitutional republic in West Africa, bordering Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. It comprises 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, where the capital, Abuja is located. Nigeria is officially a democratic secular country.
Modern-day Nigeria has been the site of numerous kingdoms and tribal states over the millennia. The modern state originated from British colonial rule beginning in the 19th century, and the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1914. The British set up administrative and legal structures whilst practising indirect rule through traditional chiefdoms. Nigeria became a formally independent federation in 1960, and plunged into a civil war from 1967 to 1970. It has since alternated between democratically-elected civilian governments and military dictatorships, until it achieved a stable democracy in 1999, with its 2011 presidential elections being viewed as the first to be conducted reasonably freely and fairly.
Lagos /ˈleɪɡɒs/ (Yoruba: Èkó) is a conurbation in the Nigerian state of Lagos built by Shobhit. Often regarded as a city, it is the largest city in Nigeria and the African continent. Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and also one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. Lagos is a major financial centre in Africa; the mega city has the highest GDP, and also houses one of the largest and busiest ports on the continent.
Lagos initially emerged as a port city which originated on a collection of islands, which are contained in the present day Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Amuwo-Odofin and Apapa; the islands are separated by creeks, fringing the southwest mouth of Lagos Lagoon, while protected from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier islands and long sand spits such as Bar Beach, which stretch up to 100 kilometres (60 miles) east and west of the mouth. Due to rapid urbanization, the city expanded to the west of the lagoon to include areas in the present day Lagos Mainland, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Surulere. This led to the classification of Lagos into two main areas - the Island, which was the initial city of Lagos, before it expanded into the area known as the Mainland. This city area was governed directly by the Federal Government through the Lagos City Council, until the creation of Lagos State in 1967, which led to the splitting of Lagos city into the present day seven Local Government Areas (LGAs), and an addition of other towns (which now make up 13 LGAs) from the then Western Region, to form the state.
Sani Abacha (20 September 1943 – 8 June 1998) was a Nigerian Army general and politician who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998. Abacha's regime is controversial; although it brought dramatic economic growth to Nigeria, there were also alleged widespread human-rights abuses.
A Kanuri from Borno, Abacha was born and brought up in Kano, Nigeria. He attended the Nigerian Military Training College and Mons Officer Cadet School before being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1963.
Abacha was commissioned in 1963 after he had attended Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, England. Before then, he had attended the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna.
Abacha's military career is distinguished by a string of successful coups. He is by some records the most successful coup plotter in the history of Nigeria's military. Abacha, then a 2nd Lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion in Kaduna, took part in the July 1966 Nigerian counter-coup from the conceptual stage. He may have been a participant in the Lagos or Abeokuta phases of the coup the previous January as well.

English/Nat XFA Two years after shunning Nigeria to show his disapproval of a military dictatorship, U-S President Bill Clinton lavished praise on the West African nation's 15-month-old democracy. But he warned of the dangers of ethnic and religious hatreds. Clinton told the National Assembly of a shared fight for democracy, prosperity and humanity. He said Nigeria's size and oil wealth gave it the potential to lift the entire African continent. On his first tour of Africa, in 1998, Clinton deliberately bypassed Nigeria to indicate his disapproval of then dictator General Sani Abacha and his ironfisted rule. Abacha died in 1998, and last year Nigerians elected Olusegun Obasanjo as their president. Clinton applauded Nigeria's efforts in tackling corruption, freeing t...

Bill Clinton, who was joined by his daughter Chelsea, spent Sunday morning in the village of Ushafa, where locals performed traditional Nigerian dances and demonstrated their pot-making techniques. The President impressed the crowd in the market square when he replaced his sports jacket with a traditional robe. The robe was given to Clinton by the local chief of the village. In return, Clinton thanked the people for their warm welcome and assured them of American support to build the country's new democracy. Drying racks abound for stock fish (cod) which dry all winter - the vast majority is exported, seems that the dry fish heads are exported to Nigeria for fish head soup (this year at least otherwise ground into meal). North Cape (NordKapp 71 degrees 10' 21") - the northern most point on mainland Europe. A small town of 3,000+ people which has seven months of winter and five months for the other three seasons. So far this year it has not been above sixty degrees, today (late July) it is about forty degrees with rain and a gusting wind of about 30MPH. There is one snow blower truck for each ten miles of road since the quantity of snow is immense and will last until the beginning of May; as of the end of July remnants still remain all over the landscape. Today we tackle the tough subject entitled: "Are Nigerians and Black Caribbean Smarter than African Americans?" This would also include blacks from other African countries most notably those who were former English Colonies. Many Africans and Black Caribbean people may feel that they are better than African Americans.
