NARGARGOLE ON THELEMA A magical philosophy, Created by that self-styled Beast, Aleister E. Crowley (whose name does not rhyme with 'holy' but 'jowly')), founder of the Order of the Silver Star; of the O.T.O., its Outer Head, the Ordo Templi Orientis which eagerly (by all accounts, by Crowley's) accepted the Aenonic Word, Thelema, meaning Will. Now the underlying thesis of this philosophy is that every human's life objective should be the exclusive doing of their true will. But just what is this will, so precious and divine (meaning of greatest moral value)? How's it to be recognized? how ascertained? It seems true will arises in five connected ways: firstly independently of DNA, of social state (despite, in other words, of our conditioning from childhood, and genetic endowment); Secondly, spontaneously like love at first impression when, as those troubadour Italians say, when the lightning bold of love assails you! Yet, thirdly, without those superficial cravings that the herd of humankind imparts to an innocent and open mind - simply the conviction that Destiny is truly forged - made manifest - by the ruminations of the mind. Fourthly, imparting to the focus of the will an ultimate significance not to be ignored because the very self of me or you is from this greatest goal indivisible and this target of your focused mind the very future life by which you will succeed and derive full meaning from. All a thousand miles began with this first step of recognition! Fifthly, with no pressing preconceptions of the detail of your master plan; an illustration Actors say they had the call to that redoubtable profession before they even knew what actors do! Then, against their parents' 'good advice', moved earth and heaven to realize their sacred dream which Kings have called a wretched vice! but did I say: 'a dream that cannot be ignored'? Because it often is, and this the cause of most men's misery (and women's too) oh hideously, do we deny our liberty our life in destiny, our love for life, our light of genius, the Truth of who we are! And this expressed in perfect Action what Crowley termed 'love under will'. This leads to the Second Thesis of the Beast Championed by the OTO: if everyone was following the path of their true will, Utopia would be established and maintained - by the energized enthusiasm of everyone's true will, each to his own plantation bound but not despairing, not blaming others for any lack of vision, or betrayal of that very self, the will expresses! For this would never be the case because, he would be truly happy with his lot, be it mending roads, building bridges or smoking Pot because, by these activities, he would his Truth, his Self, be perfectly expressing, with no one to deny his Calling, not least, not least, himself! So now to Crowley's thesis third:: How can we discern what it is we should be doing in the execution of our true will? And this is relevant to the Remit of the Order of the Silver Star first, through Mysticism, Crowley's term for yoga, we hear the voice of our true self calling from the depths of yogic silence second, by force of magick ritual, to stimulate our lucid dreams, to populate them with such symbols as may, on further contemplation, furnish us with wondrous clues as to the nature of those actions that must perfectly express our Truth Now these glyphs, dream generated, would be related to some external schema say the Cabbalistic tree of life or to some alphabet of occult meaning which, when possibly combined, reveals to us the contents of our mind, those parts that normally are hidden or denied. Thus to provide the bas relief of our true self that is gradually engraved upon that consciousness that binds to the grave of mediocrity, as Mozart's rival warned. Do I believe in this Thlema? How can something that should arise spontaneously be searched for almost scientifically? And does not this urbane and treacherous life teach us that it is only by blind fortune that success and failure are determined? Or simply by the skills that we attain - that we almost drift into acquiring - can we discover opportunities that only by some lack of skill made seemingly unobtainable? Can the contents of our dreams ensure we operate beyond the confines of our conditioning -- our DNA inheritance? But maybe these old dreams of ours point to nothing more than self-delusion this is Nashville, where everyone dreams of greatness! So of Thelema and its founder I have my doubts because too many awkward questions remain unanswered and Thelema is presented as a system of belief another name for God, in fact, extended merely to include the concept of the self to make it seen respectable, when I do believe, for sure, it is but a rich man's upper class and pompous fantasy, no more!
