Thank you so much for stopping by. Hopefully this video is helpful to you, and I'm not too awkward to watch! I've wanted to make videos like this for a while - you see I sometimes receive emails from new illustrators & wanted to create something that could help answer all of their questions.
The illustration industry is a baffling place and I'm still learning from after 5 years in the business, but hopefully my tips will help some of you out there!
P.s sorry for the weird out-of-sync bits, and occasional weird noises - I have no idea what went on there but I'd already spent about a thousand hours editing so they're here to stay. Lets refer to them as "amateur quirks". I'm still learning here!
P.p.s sorry for all the blinking - the sun was bright & my eyes are super sensitive to light!

Finding clients is probably the most daunting aspect of freelancing, especially for those just starting out in their careers. The good news is that there are definitely things you can do to be proactive about finding work, regardless of where you are in your career. I'm sharing some of things I’ve done over the years to build up my client base as a freelance illustrator. I hope some of it is helpful for you!

My Watercolour Materials:
Paints:
My watercolor supplie include: Winsor and Newton professional Watercolor paints and Winsor & Newton Cotman paint as well as Schminke watercolours. I also love to make my own paint using Sennelier Watercolours pigments and some times include some Liquid Watercolors as well. In my humble opinion these are the best watercolor paints ever!
Brushes:
I mostly use DaVinci professional watercolour sable brushes from davinci’s maestro series #35. However I also love to use sable watercolour paint brushes from Rosemary and Co.
Paper:
I love to work with 300gsm hot pressed watercolour paper from Strathmore or Arches or Canson (but I occasionally use 300gsm cold pressed watercolor paper too) For plain-air painting I use a hard bound watercolour sketchbook and for sketching and crafting new painting ideas I use 90gsm sketching paper from strathmore artists paper.
Extras:
I some times use watercolor pencils, watercolour sticks and watercolour markers from wander and newton but watercolour tube paint are my favourite. Love to use dip pens instead of plastic pens and markers as I feel they are both more environmentally friendly and timeless.

Freelancer
A freelancer or freelance worker is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term. Illustrator
An illustrator is an artist who specializes in enhancing writing or elucidating concepts by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text or idea. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, which is the reason illustrations are often found in children's books.
Illustrations have been used in advertisements, architectural rendering, greeting cards, posters, books, graphic novels, storyboards, manuals, business, magazines, shirts greeting cards, video games, tutorials and newspapers. A cartoon illustration can add humor to stories or essays.
Techniques
Some traditional illustration techniques include watercolor, pen and ink, airbrush art, oil painting, pastels, wood engraving, and linoleum cuts. John Held, Jr. was an illustrator who worked in a variety of styles and media, including linoleum cuts, pen and ink drawings, magazine cover paintings, cartoons, comic strips, and set design, while also creating fine art with his animal sculptures and watercolor, many established illustrators attended an art school or college of some sort and were trained in different painting and drawing techniques. Universities and art schools offer specific courses in illustration (for example in the UK, a BA (Hons) Degree) so this has become a new avenue into the profession. Many illustrators are freelance, commissioned by publishers (of newspapers, books, or magazines) or advertising agencies. Most scientific illustrations and technical illustrations are also known as information graphics. Among the information graphics specialists are medical illustrators who illustrate human anatomy, often requiring many years of artistic and medical training.

My watercolor supplie include: Winsor and Newton professional Watercolor paints and Winsor & Newton Cotman paint as well as Schminke watercolours. I also love to make my own paint using Sennelier Watercolours pigments and some times include some Liquid Watercolors as well. In my humble opinion these are the best watercolor paints ever!
Brushes:

Thank you so much for stopping by. Hopefully this video is helpful to you, and I'm not too awkward to watch! I've wanted to make videos like this for a while - you see I sometimes receive emails from new illustrators & wanted to create something that could help answer all of their questions.
The illustration industry is a baffling place and I'm still learning from after 5 years in the business, but hopefully my tips will help some of you out there!
P.s sorry for the weird out-of-sync bits, and occasional weird noises - I have no idea what went on there but I'd already spent about a thousand hours editing so they're here to stay. Lets refer to them as "amateur quirks". I'm still learning here!

This video is the first in a two-part series covering some of the practical aspects of freelance illustration, including: Finding clients, using contracts and getting paid.
Finding clients is probably the most daunting aspect of freelancing, especially for those just starting out in their careers. The good news is that there are definitely things you can do to be proactive about finding work, regardless of where you are in your career. I'm sharing some of things I’ve done over the years to build up my client base as a freelance illustrator. I hope some of it is helpful for you!

On WATERCOLOR by Scarlett Damen you’ll find lots of watercolor painting tutorials for beginners and new artists with simple step by step classes covering how to use watercolour and basics and beginner watercolor techniques. (everything from how to paint a graduated and veragrated wash, chasing the right watercolour paper, to using salt, plastic wrap, soap and alcohol in your paintings as lets not forget watercolour texture medium and of course everything you ever wanted to know about watercolour masking fluid… to name a few.)
I’ve also created many full length watercolour lessons for intermediate and advanced watercolorists wanting to learn how to paint botanical art in watercolour. These classes include both speed paintings with commentary and full watercolor painting step by step demonstrations to help you learn to master watercolour techniques as well as a lots of art tips, watercolour facts and fun painting tricks to help you along your art journey.

My Watercolour Materials:
Paints:
My watercolor supplie include: Winsor and Newton professional Watercolor paints and Winsor & Newton Cotman paint as well as Schminke watercolours. I also love to make my own paint using Sennelier Watercolours pigments and some times include some Liquid Watercolors as well. In my humble opinion these are the best watercolor paints ever!
Brushes:
I mostly use DaVinci professional watercolour sable brushes from davinci’s maestro series #35. However I also love to use sable watercolour paint brushes from Rosemary and Co.
Paper:
I love to work with 300gsm hot pressed watercolour paper from Strathmore or Arches or Canson (but I occasionally use 300gsm cold pressed watercolor paper too) For plain-air painting I use a hard bound watercolour sketchbook and for sketching and crafting new painting ideas I use 90gsm sketching paper from strathmore artists paper.
Extras:
I some times use watercolor pencils, watercolour sticks and watercolour markers from wander and newton but watercolour tube paint are my favourite. Love to use dip pens instead of plastic pens and markers as I feel they are both more environmentally friendly and timeless.

An image is worth a thousand words.
Is this the reason why in the world of publishing, journalism, media, illustration is used so often? Be it the cover of a book, or the fact it matches an article, or that it allows to make an infographic or commercial, illustration, still or animated, it has become the key to success and awareness of a variety of newspapers and magazines.
But who lies behind the image? An illustrator, naturally.
The work of a freelance illustrator is a "new" job, especially in Europe, also if from some perspectives it could be considered as ancient as printing. Nowadays illustrators are recognized at an international level, they earn a lot, and travel to find new sources of inspiration.
How do you become an illustrator? How does an image come to life? How much time does it take to create a personal and recognizable style? What steps do you have to take to become famous and work for magazines, websites and international newspapers?
ILLUSTRATORS is a documentary that asks these questions to four Italian artists, who are wide world famous and have been awarded many prizes and recognitions: Alessandro "Shout" Gottardo, Emiliano Ponzi, Olimpia Zagnoli and Francesco Poroli. Four people who, through talent and technology, have managed to pursue their dream.
The list of newspapers they work for is boundless: The New York Times, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, Time, Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, The Washington Post , Businessweek, The Boston Globe, Le Monde, The Guardian, London Telegraph, Rolling Stone as well as many advertising and media agencies.

The Charlie Gard cartoon published on August 1 turned my stomach.Setting aside, for the moment, the notion that there ever needs to be a cartoon illustration of a dead child, the "Face of Government Run Health Care" caption was totally ridiculous and had no place on the Editorial page.The legal battle in Great Britain over the little boy's care was ......
