Captain and Chief officer are overlapping terms, formal or informal, for the commander of a military unit, the commander of a ship, airplane, spacecraft, or other vessel, or the commander of a port, fire department or police department, election precinct, etc. Captain is a military rank in armies, navies, coast guards, etc., typically at the level of an officer commanding a company of infantry, a ship, or a battery of artillery, or similar distinct unit. Chief officer may be used interchangeably with captain in some situations, as when a Captain-ranked Navy officer is serving as the commander of a ship. The terms also may be used as an informal or honorary title for persons in similar commanding roles. In mining (esp. Cornish), it is an honorific given the superintendent or manager of a mine.
The term "captain" derives from katepánō (Greek: κατεπάνω, lit. "[the one] placed at the top", or " the topmost") which was used as title for a senior Byzantine military rank and office. The word was Latinized as capetanus/catepan, and its meaning seems to have merged with that of the Italian "capitaneus" (which derives from the Latin word "caput", meaning head). This hybridized term gave rise to the English language term captain and its equivalents in other languages (Capitan, Kapitan, Kapitän, El Capitan, Il Capitano, Kapudan Pasha etc.)
This list of ship directions explains dozens of related terms such as fore, aft, astern, aboard, or topside. For background, see below: Origins.
Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny) is the lead ship of the Destiny-class of cruise ships. Along with two of her four sisters, she is operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone shipyard in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northern Italy, she was christened as Carnival Destiny in Venice, Italy, in November 1996 by Lin Arison, wife of Ted Arison, the founder of Carnival Cruise Line.
Upon entering service, Carnival Destiny was the first passenger ship ever built to be over 100,000 tons as measured by gross tonnage. She became Carnival Sunshine on May 5, 2013, after receiving a major renovation featuring all Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades. At a ceremony in New Orleans on November 17, 2013, she was rechristened, with Lin Arison once again serving as her godmother.
Carnival Destiny went into dry dock in Trieste, Italy in 2013 to be refitted and renamed Carnival Sunshine. The refitting, which was completed in May 2013, had been delayed a month to allow for new back-up generator systems to be installed after Carnival announced the first part of its fleet-wide review. Two of Carnival Sunshine's European sailings were cancelled to allow time for the generators to be installed. The ship was renamed due to the size and scope of the renovation, which included almost every guest area on the ship.
Only 11 of Germany's 1,445 container ship captains are female. 26-year-old Julia Petzold is hoping to join them. She's second-in-command on the carrier vessel Grietje, and is hoping to be made captain within the next five years. A tour of the best cabin on the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship... cabin 9115, one of two Captain's Suites onboard. This is the largest cabin on the ship and also features the largest balcony. This suite has a living room, a bedroom, two bathrooms, two televisions, a wardrobe area with closets, and large picture windows with an amazing view. The large balcony has padded outdoor furniture and is wind protected by large glass windows at the front and side. This cabin is located at the far forward end of Lido deck, directly above the ship's bridge. It did not originally exist when this ship was the Carnival Destiny. The "Captain's Suites" were added during the 2013 refurbishment when the ship was transformed in to the Carnival Sunshine. You may be wondering if the "Captain's Suite" is w...

A full length full flight video in real time, from Luxembourg to Dusseldorf, onboard Hahn Air Cessna Citation CJ4 D-CHRB operating flight HR311 on July 29 2016. **Every moment of the flight included from airport to airport. ATC for full flight.** Our journey begins outside the terminal at Luxembourg International Airport (LUX), before we enter the terminal to check in at the Luxair desks. From there it's an easy transition through security to the departure lounge, which is pretty quiet. We make our way to the gate for today's flight, where the passenger service agent soon arrives and informs me that I'm the only passenger on today's flight! The very quick boarding is completed and I make my way down to the bus, on which I'm the only passenger, to be driven out to today's ride, Cessn...
"Diving Bell ; The Truth Shall Not Sink with Sewol" (Director’s cut / free release) - invited by Busan Int'l Film Festival(2014), Salaya Int'l Film Festival(2015) - Grand Prix at Fukuoka Asian Film Festival (2015) The Sewol ferry with 476 passengers onboard sank on April 16th, 2014. The passengers waited still, believing the statement “Wait in the cabin” from the captain. However, at the same time the captain party boarded lifeboats in secret. The ship finally sank, and 304 passengers died in total. Among them 250 were the students from Danwon Highschool, who were on their way to Jeju Island for the field trip. Even though there are 9 people in the wrecked ship still now, the Korean Government has postponed the salvage operation. The Korean Park Geun-hye Administration is taking no ...
Hop on board SkyWest 5391 (Bombardier CRJ700) on a short hop from Denver Intl Airport to Aspen–Pitkin County Airport from October 28th, 2016. Footage includes the flight from taxi to parking at the gate. As a bonus, full ATC recordings are included. Any questions and comments are welcome below. We had the pleasure of having two captains onboard due to one being check captain since the other captain was on a check ride to be certified into Aspen. The captain be evaluated was extremely friendly and funny and I wish I got his name and speech. Since he was being evaluated we flew the LOC/DME-E approach which is considered one of the hardest and steepest approaches in the world. Since we are in VFR conditions you get a good idea of the approach. Video Guide: Taxi: Start of Video Takeoff: 3:15...

During the Second World War, onboard a small insignificant ship in the U.S. Pacific Fleet, an event occurs unlike any that the United States Navy has ever experianced. A Ship's Captain is removed from his command by his Executive Officer in an apparent outright act of mutiny. As the trial of the mutineers unfold, it is then learned that the Captain of the ship was mentally unstable, perhaps even insane. The Navy must then decide: was the Caine Mutiny a criminal act? Or an act of courage to save a ship from destruction at the hands of her Captain.
This video is property of Train_PlaneHub, "RachaelMatt" 1080p HD! Finally, the day had arrived I was heading back across the Caribbean once again. But this time to an island I'd not yet visited until now, Cuba. The Caribbean is one of my favourite areas in the world and so far I've not been disappointed by any of the islands I've visited. There's just something special about heading longhaul over to the tropics that makes holidaying over there so much better. Not particularly the best day for flying across the Atlantic as you'll see in the video. A beautiful morning at Gatwick, very few clouds around. However once well on the way, over the Atlantic the Captain must have been rather aware of some turbulent in our path towards Holguin. So some 2 hours before landing the crew were reques...
This video is property of Train_PlaneHub, "RachaelMatt" 1080p HD! Quite an eventful journey home from Zurich to say the least. Due to Storm Imogen arriving in the UK, particularly the South including London bringing storm force winds with gusts up to 80mph and stronger in coastal reasons flights in & out of London were heavily disrupted. In actual fact I was due to fly on LX456 an Helvetic ERJ190 from Zurich to London City Airport, however after boarding we waiting for half an hour only to be told that due to the conditions in London we would be cancelled and passengers rebooked onto a Heathrow flight. So that's what happened to me, I ended up on this aircraft, flight LX332 to Heathrow. After boarding flight was given an ATC restriction due to the weather and Heathrow only accepting 25...
