Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault ordered by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Union positions on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg in the state of Pennsylvania during the American Civil War. Its futility was predicted by the charge's commander, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, and it was arguably an avoidable mistake from which the Southern war effort never fully recovered militarily or psychologically. The farthest point reached by the attack has been referred to as the high-water mark of the Confederacy.
The charge is named after Maj. Gen. George Pickett, one of three Confederate generals who led the assault under Longstreet.
After Confederate attacks on both Union flanks had failed the day and night before, Lee was determined to strike the Union center on the third day. On the night of July 2, Meade correctly predicted at a council of war that Lee would try an attack on his lines in the center the following morning.

Civil War Tour Guide Gary Kross Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg - We lucked out a few years ago and got Gary Kross as our tour guide. He was so good I pulled out my camera and grabbed this video. I missed the first minute or so of his battlefield talk. If you like this, search for little round top, I recorded him there a little later in the tour, just as good, if not better. We're planning another trip sometime in the future...and if Gary Kross is still giving tours we'll schedule him for sure. He stood at the front of our tour bus and gave a driving tour as we went from site to site. His knowledge level is astounding.
A dramatic scene in the movie Gettysburg, where during the battle of Pickett's Charge, General Lewis Armistead rallies the remaining forces of The Confederacy during the battle. I don't own Gettysburg, never have and never will. Stop with the god damn Copyright claims. All rights reserved

Joe Ryan offers an analysis of the relationship between Lee and Longstreet at Gettysburg on the third day. Note: The second slide states incorrectly that the quote comes from General Lee's report dated July 31, 1863. It does not. The quote is found in Lee's supposed second report, dated "Jan. 1864" which was probably manufactured by Charles Marshall after the war. Lee's July 31 report reads, "The general plan of attack was unchanged, excepting that one division and two brigades of Hill's corps were ordered to support Longstreet. . . The morning was occupied in necessary preparations, and the battle recommenced in the afternoon." For you Longstreet men, the video Longstreet's Plan for the Third Day offers an explanation for the probable outcome of a tactical move around Meade's left, h...
A Bucket List item complete. It is quite an experience and suggest that for anyone interested in the Civil War, visiting battlefields and walking the ground where the men fought and died is irreplaceable learning. For many, myself included, they are profound moments and very unique.
A longstanding item of my Bucket List gets taken care of on July 25th. Come join me in Gettysburg on a walk from Seminary Ridge, tracing the steps of the Confederate Troops in Pickett's Charge. The field across to the Federal Line on Cemetery Ridge is very much hallowed ground and understandably restricted to the public for conservation reasons. On the 25th, a special Battlefield Guide Tour provides this rare opportunity to walk literally in the footsteps of history. For Civil War buffs, immersion in knowing what happened on this field in 1863 could well be quite an emotional experience.

Union side of Pickett's charge. At the position where Lewis Armistead fell, and upto the wall to give a perspective of what a Union soldier may of seen. I took these on my families vacation in (2004) and have not got around to uploading them anywhere until now. I've decided to make some short documentary's on the battles whenever I get the time (specifically Gettysburg , and Antietam), but in the meantime I'll upload them here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Declaration of Independence http://constitution.org/us_doi.htm united States Constitution: http://www.constitution.org/constit_.htm The Federalist papers http://constitution.org/fed/federa00.htm State Constitutions http://constitution.org/cons/usstcons.htm Articles of Confederation http://www.barefootsworld.net/aoc1777.ht...
