Canon T6 vs Nikon D3300 - Which is the best beginner DSLR?

The first thing you’re going to notice is that both of these cameras are very small. Now if you’ve never used a dslr, they might actually seem pretty big, but compared to bigger dslrs like the nikon d7200 or the canon 80d, these are quite small in comparison. And that’s great for travelling and when you don’t want to be lugging around a big camera body. For beginners, I think that they both have a great fit. Both cameras are nicely weighted and will work well with a smaller lens like the 18-55 kit lens or even a 50mm 1.8. On the top, both lenses have mode dials on the right hand side here. As you’d expect, they each have a number of different beginner modes like portrait and landscape, but also both allow you to go into full manual mode for when you want to get a little bit more serious with your camera. They’ve both got built in flashes which is nice for low light scenes So in generally theres really not a big difference in the build quality of both of these cameras, and as its probably your first dslr, you’ll probably feel right at home on either of these systems. - So lets talk about the lcd screens on the back of both of these cameras. Now unfortunately both of these cameras are lacking artuiculating screens that you’d find on higher end models. And that is a little bit of pity as they can be great for getting up high or down low on a shot. But a plus side of that is that it’s going to really make you try and use the viewfinder a little bit more, which is something a lot of new photographers aren’t used to. Unfortunately both cameras are also lacking a touch screen as well. Both screens are nice though although I did find that the Canon’s was slightly brighter. - Let’s talk about battery life quickly. Now in my testing I found that the Nikon D3300 did perform a little bit better than the Canon. But not by a long shot. The biggest difference was when shooting video where the Nikon did have quite a lot more battery on time. But in terms of stills shooting, both of these cameras performed well and should last for a full day of shooting for most occasions. - Let’s talk about using these cameras for video now. Now if you haven’t used a dslr for filming video before, both of these cameras will be great to get used to it. Both produced some lovely video quality, especially for such budget cameras. In fact I made a video using the Canon T6 the other day and I’ve got to say I was very impressed with how it turned out. In good lighting conditions where it’s not too dark, the t6 to me was nearly as good as the likes of the canon t6i or even the canon 70d which is pretty impressive. Now one area where the Nikon has the upper edge on the T6 though is on the side here. The d3300 comes standard with a mic jack which means you can plug in a microphone to get better audio. If you’re only planning on shooting the occasional video, then that’s not going to be an issue at all, but if you do want to start making youtube videos or you want to get into the world of dslr video, thats a nice bonus on the D33300. - Let’s talk about the burst mode on both of these cameras now. Now both of these cameras aren’t exactly the fastest firing dslr’s around, but they will allow you get capture a few fast photos in succession. The Nikon has the upper hand here with 5 frames per second compared to 3 on the Canon. For reference sake this is what the nikon sounds like, and this is what the canon sounds like. For most people, I think 3 shots per second is more than enough, in fact i generally only take 1 shot when i shoot, but if you know you’re going to be shooting sports and things like that, maybe look int the diffraction of the nikon. I did however find that the Canon was the better performance in Autofocus. Now both cameras weren’t great, especially compared to higher priced models, but they definitely did work pretty well.
