Bombay City Improvement Trust
The Bombay City Improvement Trust (BIT) was created on December 9, 1898, in response to the Mumbai plague epidemic of 1896. It was created through an Act of the Parliament. The Municipal Corporation and the government handed over all vacant lands to this body. The CIT undertook a host of measures to improve sanitary and living conditions in the city. The planned opening up of suburbs was due to the Trust.
The CIT widened roads in the central, crowded, parts of the town. A new east-west road, the Princess Street, was constructed to channel the sea air into the centre of the crowded residential areas. The north-south Sydenham Road (now Mohammedali Road) was also constructed with this end in view.
The Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion suburban development was started in 1899 with the express purpose of relieving congestion to the south. Well-laid out plots, with mixed land-use patterns marked these sections. Completed in 1900, access to these parts were through the newly completed Mohammedali Road.

Mumbai (/mÊŠmˈbaɪ/; also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world and the seÑ?ond most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 20.7 million as of 2011. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West, or Central Asia. Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires among all cities in India.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company when in 1661 King Charles II married the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and seven islands of Bombay. During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterized by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India's independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital.

Exploring Mumbai in One Day - Best Sights in Bombay
We had an awesome day in Mumbai taking in the sights of the city that was previously named Bombay! Mumbai was quite different than other cities we have visited in India so far, mostly because the city is right on the coast. During our one day of exploring Mumbai, we visited the Gateway of India (and almost got robbed), had a coffee inside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, visited Chowpatty Beach at sunset, tried vada pav for the first time, and got to see the CST train station (chhatrapati shivaji terminus) lit up at night! Oh yeah, and when we arrived in Mumbai we took the local Mumbai train. That was WILD! Mumbai was quite different than other cities we have visited in India so far, mostly because the city is right on the coast. During our one day of exploring Mumbai, we visited the Gateway of India (and almost got robbed), had a coffee inside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, visited Chowpatty Beach at sunset, tried vada pav for the first time, and got to see the CST train station (chhatrapati shivaji terminus) lit up at night! Oh yeah, and when we arrived in Mumbai we took the local Mumbai train. That was WILD!
If you are visiting Mumbai and are wondering what to do with one day in Bombay, feel free to follow our itinerary! If you are a foreigner visiting India for the first time like we are, be sure to schedule in lots of breaks during your day exploring Mumbai because not only is it very hot, but it's very busy! People at the Gateway to India can be very excited to take pictures with foreigners visiting India, and if you're like us, this can result in a weary traveler! Going for a coffee inside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel (just across the street from the Gateway of India) is a great way to take a peaceful, air conditioned break after your visit to the harbor.

It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

During our one day of exploring Mumbai, we visited the Gateway of India (and almost got robbed), had a coffee inside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, visited Chowpatty Beach at sunset, tried vada pav for the first time, and got to see the CST train station (chhatrapati shivaji terminus) lit up at night! Oh yeah, and when we arrived in Mumbai we took the local Mumbai train. That was WILD!
If you are visiting Mumbai and are wondering what to do with one day in Bombay, feel free to follow our itinerary! If you are a foreigner visiting India for the first time like we are, be sure to schedule in lots of breaks during your day exploring Mumbai because not only is it very hot, but it's very busy! People at the Gateway to India can be very excited to take pictures with foreigners visiting India, and if you're like us, this can result in a weary traveler! Going for a coffee inside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel (just across the street from the Gateway of India) is a great way to take a peaceful, air conditioned break after your visit to the harbor.

It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

Bombay City Improvement Trust
The Bombay City Improvement Trust (BIT) was created on December 9, 1898, in response to the Mumbai plague epidemic of 1896. It was created through an Act of the Parliament. The Municipal Corporation and the government handed over all vacant lands to this body. The CIT undertook a host of measures to improve sanitary and living conditions in the city. The planned opening up of suburbs was due to the Trust.
The CIT widened roads in the central, crowded, parts of the town. A new east-west road, the Princess Street, was constructed to channel the sea air into the centre of the crowded residential areas. The north-south Sydenham Road (now Mohammedali Road) was also constructed with this end in view.
The Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion suburban development was started in 1899 with the express purpose of relieving congestion to the south. Well-laid out plots, with mixed land-use patterns marked these sections. Completed in 1900, access to these parts were through the newly completed Mohammedali Road.
