Travel video about destination Caribbean Islands.
Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus, it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past. They inhabit a tropical world, an exotic Caribbean island that consists of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The Arawak Indians named the island, Hayti, Land of Mountains, and later Columbus changed the name to Hispanola. Wonderful beaches and golden sand, tropical rainforests that reach almost to the sea and crystal clear turquoise water, a perfect place to relax in one of the most beautiful regions in the world.
Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation, and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author, Ian Fleming.
Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae.
Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than 700 islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can be seen from everywhere, as they overshadow the city's buildings. On each side of its tranquil streets, the city's pastel colored houses look like something from a confectioner's shop.
Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis, that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better!
Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.

The Caribbean (/ˌkærᵻˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/; Spanish: Caribe; Dutch: 
Caraïben ; Caribbean Hindustani: कैरिबियन (Kairibiyana); French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles) is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean), and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.
Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 700 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. (See the list.) These islands generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean islands, consisting of the Greater Antilles on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), are part of the somewhat larger West Indies grouping, which also includes the Lucayan Archipelago (comprising The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands) north of the Greater Antilles and Caribbean Sea. In a wider sense, the mainland countries of Belize, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are also included.

The Caribbean islands are those islands that border or are surrounded by the Caribbean Sea organized by the political entity to which each island belongs.
There are thousands of islands that are part of the island countries of the broadly defined Caribbean region: Anguilla has 21; Antigua-and-Barbuda has 37; Aruba (4); Barbados (2, formerly 3 but Pelican Island is now absorbed into Barbados through land reclamation, 1956–1961); Belize (many); British Virgin Islands (43); Cayman Islands (12); Cuba (23); Dominica (7); Dominican Republic (2); Grenada (39); Guadeloupe (38); Haiti (12); Honduras (6); Jamaica (26); Martinique (50); Montserrat (4); Caribbean Netherlands (20); Puerto Rico (142); Saint Barthélemy (13); Saint Kitts-and-Nevis (20); Saint Lucia (17); Saint Martin (8); Saint Vincent-and-the-Grenadines (39); Trinidad-and-Tobago (21); and United States Virgin Islands (81).
Some continental countries also have islands in the Caribbean, including Colombia (which has 10 islands in the Caribbean Sea, known as San Andrés-and-Providencia), Mexico (4 islands), Nicaragua (4), Venezuela (15), Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama. The United States also claims several small Caribbean islands (including Alto Velo).

Ray Watts
Raymond Carson Watts DFC (13 August 1917 – 17 January 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
A forward, Watts grew up in Launceston and played his early football with Churinga in the Tasmanian Amateur Football League. He won the league's awarded for the best and fairest player in 1935.
Watts made his VFL debut in the 11th round of the 1937 VFL season against North Melbourne and kicked three goals. He kicked 60 goals for Essendon in 1938, a total bettered by only one teammate, Tom Reynolds. This included a career best seven goals in a win over St Kilda, which he equaled twice more in his career. He was Essendon's third leading goal-kicker in 1939 and 1940.
He was a member of the Essendon seconds premiership team in 1941 but made only two appearances in the seniors that year, as he had enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force.
During the war he served as a warrant officer and in 1943 was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, along with his pilot Arthur Simpson, for their efforts in a bombing operation over Germany. They were flying over Hanover on a Lancaster bomber when the airscrew of a German night fighter tore a hole under the plane's nose, which resulted in the plane falling 3000 feet. Despite this, they were able to recover and still achieve their objectives in dropping the bombs at their target.

Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae.
Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than 700 islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can be seen from everywhere, as they overshadow the city's buildings. On each side of its tranquil streets, the city's pastel colored houses look like something from a confectioner's shop.
Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis, that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better!
Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.

Mexico's Riviera Maya is situated on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula. Stretching along the coast for over 60 miles, the Riviera Maya encompasses fabulous beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, and the spectacular island of Cozumel.
Just a half hour drive south of Cancun, laid-back Puerto Morelos is the northern gateway to the Riviera Maya. Continuing south, explore family-friendly beaches like Akumal Beach and Half Moon Bay.
Riviera Maya's largest town, Playa del Carmen has a distinctly European feel. Filled with boutique hotels, fine restaurants and designer stores, the town is a great base from which to explore the Riviera's other treasures.
From Playa del Carmen, hop on a ferry to the Island of Cozumel, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. On the island's western side, Playa Palancar and the Chankanaab Marine Park offer calm waters which make exploring the reef a breeze, even for beginners. Above the waters, wildlife lovers can explore the island's mangrove, lagoon and coastal habitats at Punta Sur and Punta Celerain. The island offers plenty of rustic beach-side cantinas serving up cold cervezas and idyllic views.
For the best views of all, head back to the mainland to one of Mexico's first resorts, the 13th century ruins of Tullum. Sitting high on coastal cliffs the temples are the perfect place to greet the sun, just as Mayan kings did centuries ago.

Mexico's Riviera Maya is situated on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula. Stretching along the coast for over 60 miles, the Riviera Maya encompasses fabulous beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, and the spectacular island of Cozumel.
Just a half hour drive south of Cancun, laid-back Puerto Morelos is the northern gateway to the Riviera Maya. Continuing south, explore family-friendly beaches like Akumal Beach and Half Moon Bay.
Riviera Maya's largest town, Playa del Carmen has a distinctly European feel. Filled with boutique hotels, fine restaurants and designer stores, the town is a great base from which to explore the Riviera's other treasures.
From Playa del Carmen, hop on a ferry to the Island of Cozumel, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. On the island's western side, Playa Palancar and the Chankanaab Marine Park offer calm waters which make exploring the reef a breeze, even for beginners. Above the waters, wildlife lovers can explore the island's mangrove, lagoon and coastal habitats at Punta Sur and Punta Celerain. The island offers plenty of rustic beach-side cantinas serving up cold cervezas and idyllic views.
For the best views of all, head back to the mainland to one of Mexico's first resorts, the 13th century ruins of Tullum. Sitting high on coastal cliffs the temples are the perfect place to greet the sun, just as Mayan kings did centuries ago.

The adventure starts off the island’s east coast, an hour or so from Fort-de-France. Moving at high speeds and dangling precariously over emerald waters — these boats are designed to stay afloat only while in motion: in other words, if the boat stops, it sinks! Our teacher and pro-racer Jean-Yves Aglae teaches Basecampers the technical ins-and-outs of Martinique’s most popular sport (the Le Tour de Yoles Rondes is the largest sporting event on the island). The race culminates at the gorgeous and secluded “Oscar Island.” There, we kick back and enjoy the evening and massage sore muscles. What a way to start the trip: heart-pumping activity, gorgeous Caribbean waters, a crimson sunset — and a mouth full of sand for Basecamper Sarah. ;)

The Arawak Indians named the island, Hayti, Land of Mountains, and later Columbus changed the name to Hispanola. Wonderful beaches and golden sand, tropical rainforests that reach almost to the sea and crystal clear turquoise water, a perfect place to relax in one of the most beautiful regions in the world.
Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation, and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author, Ian Fleming.
Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae.
Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than 700 islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can be seen from everywhere, as they overshadow the city's buildings. On each side of its tranquil streets, the city's pastel colored houses look like something from a confectioner's shop.
Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis, that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better!
Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.

An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
