Woodland Park, Colorado

The City of Woodland Park is a Home Rule Municipality that is the most populous city in Teller County, Colorado, United States and is immediately west of El Paso County and the unincorporated community of Crystola. Many residents in this bedroom community, which is surrounded by the one-million acre (4,000 km²) Pike National Forest, make the 17-mile (27 km) commute to Colorado Springs. Ute Pass lies 12 miles (19 km) to the west of Woodland Park on US 24. The population was 6,515 at the 2000 census. Nearby Douglas County is about a fifteen-minute drive from the city.

Called the "The City Above the Clouds," Woodland Park, at 8,465 feet (2,580 m) above sea level, often enjoys clear skies while weather in neighboring towns may be rainy or overcast. The city has pursued a policy of careful growth, and enjoys dramatic views of Pikes Peak. Woodland Park offers easy access to hiking, climbing, and fishing. Because of the city's location, there is a natural limitation to population growth.

Woodland Park, Lexington

Woodland Park is a neighborhood located immediately south of downtown Lexington, Kentucky, United States. It is composed of several small neighborhood associations. The neighborhood is alternatively named Aylesford and is sometimes referred to by locals as "Chevy Chase". However, Chevy Chase is actually a separate neighborhood located southeast of Woodland Park.

The neighborhood's boundaries are Rose Street to the north, Main Street to the east, Euclid Avenue to the west, and Clay Avenue to the south.

Woodland Park long ago was the property of Mr. Irwin, son-in-law of Henry Clay, and was the site of the Agricultural College when it was established as a branch of Kentucky University in 1865. Every year the Woodland Arts Festival brings artists all over central Kentucky to share their talents for purchase. There is also Ballet Under the Stars which occurs near the gazebo.

Burke-Canyon

Burke-Canyon is the canyon of the Burke-Canyon Creek, in the northernmost part of Shoshone County, Idaho. There are several ghost towns and/or remnants of former communities along the Burke-Canyon Road, which runs through the canyon.

From Wallace, a community humorously notorious as the "Center of the Universe", Burke-Canyon Road runs north and eastward toward the Montana border through Woodland Park, Webb, Gem, Frisco, Black Bear, Burke, and Mace.

Gem, Frisco, and Burke have been described as ghost towns, although there are some residents in the area.

History

Gold was initially discovered in the early 1860s in the mountains to the north of the Snake River basin. Silver, copper, and other minerals were subsequently discovered. Idaho experienced boom after boom, and mining towns arose overnight, boomed, and then disappeared as the miners left for the latest rush.

More than a century ago, railroads moved hardrock ore out of the mines in Burke-Canyon.

In 1892, miners called a strike which developed into a shooting war between union miners and company guards. The first shots fired were exchanged at the Frisco mine in Frisco. The violence soon spilled over into the community of Gem. From there, union miners who had successfully shut down both the Frisco and the Gem mines, travelled to the Bunker Hill mining complex near Wardner, to the west, and closed down that facility as well. The Idaho National Guard and federal troops were dispatched to the area.

Colorado (horse)

Colorado (1923–1929) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won the 2000 Guineas in 1926 and the Eclipse Stakes in 1927. He was also noted for his rivalry with the Derby winner Coronach whom he defeated on three of their four meetings.

Background

Until the emergence of Fairway at the end of the decade, Colorado was regarded as the best racehorse sired by Phalaris, who became the most influential stallion of the 20th Century. His dam, Canyon, won the 1000 Guineas in 1916 and was a successful broodmare. In addition to Colorado she produced the Eclipse Stakes winner Caerleon.

He was a small, but powerfully built colt standing just over 15 hands, known to be a particular favourite of his owner, Lord Derby. He was trained at Lord Derby's Stanley House stable by George Lambton who found him a difficult horse to prepare because of his habit of "choking" in exercise gallops.

Racing career

1925: two-year-old season

Colorado was a leading two-year-old in 1925, winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. In the Free Handicap, an official assessment of the year's two-year-olds, Colorado was assesses on 118lbs, eight pounds below the joint topweights Coronach and Legatee.

Colorado is a 1940 American Western film directed by Joseph Kane and starring Roy Rogers.

Plot

During the American Civil War a Confederate officer who is also a Captain in the Union Cavalry is keeping Federal troops in the Colorado Territory from reinforcing their armies in the East by forming an alliance of secessionists, outlaws, and opportunists as well as arming hostile Indians. Unable to send more reinforcements, the United States Secret Service sends one man, Military intelligence officer Lieutenant Jerry Burke to identify who is behind the troubles and put an end to it. Armed with a sweeping letter of both law enforcement and military powers signed by President Abraham Lincoln Jerry meets his old comrade in arms Gabby to go west.

The Confederate/Union officer calling himself Donald Mason is actually Jerry's brother Donald. Donald escapes arrest but confronts his alliance that they are getting rich whilst he is doing all the work and facing all the danger. Donald takes over by shooting a corrupt Indian Affairs commissioner after informing him that the agent is no longer an asset but a liability.
