Science fantasy

Science fantasy is a mixed genre within the umbrella of speculative fiction which simultaneously draws upon and/or combines tropes and elements from both science fiction and fantasy. It also sometimes incorporates elements of horror fiction.

Science fantasy versus science fiction

Distinguishing between science fiction and fantasy, Rod Serling claimed that the former was "the improbable made possible" while the latter was "the impossible made probable". As a combination of the two, science fantasy gives a scientific veneer of realism to things that simply could not happen in the real world under any circumstances. Where science fiction does not permit the existence of fantasy or supernatural elements, science fantasy explicitly relies upon them.

Historical view

The label first came into wide use after many science fantasy stories were published in the pulp magazines, such as Robert A. Heinlein's Magic, Inc., L. Ron Hubbard's Slaves of Sleep, and Fletcher Pratt and L. Sprague de Camp's Harold Shea series. All were relatively rationalistic stories published in John W. Campbell, Jr.'s Unknown magazine. These were a deliberate attempt to apply the techniques and attitudes of science fiction to traditional fantasy subjects. The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction published, among other things, all but the last of the Operation series, by Poul Anderson.

Science fiction

Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes and extraterrestrial life. Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations, and has been called a "literature of ideas." It usually eschews the supernatural, and unlike the related genre of fantasy, historically science fiction stories were intended to have at least a faint grounding in science-based fact or theory at the time the story was created, but this connection has become tenuous or non-existent in much of science fiction.

Definitions

Science fiction is difficult to define, as it includes a wide range of subgenres and themes. Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty, saying "science fiction is what we point to when we say it", a definition echoed by author Mark C. Glassy, who argues that the definition of science fiction is like the definition of pornography: you do not know what it is, but you know it when you see it.

Science

Science is a systematic enterprise that creates, builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.

Contemporary science is typically subdivided into the natural sciences which study the material world, the social sciences which study people and societies, and the formal sciences like mathematics. The formal sciences are often excluded as they do not depend on empirical observations. Disciplines which use science like engineering and medicine may also be considered to be applied sciences.

During the middle ages in the Middle East, foundations for the scientific method were laid by Alhazen. From classical antiquity through the 19th century, science as a type of knowledge was more closely linked to philosophy than it is now and, in fact, in the West the term "natural philosophy" encompassed fields of study that are today associated with science, such as physics, astronomy and medicine.

In the 17th and 18th centuries scientists increasingly sought to formulate knowledge in terms of laws of nature. Over the course of the 19th century, the word "science" became increasingly associated with the scientific method itself, as a disciplined way to study the natural world. It was in the 19th century that scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and biology reached their modern shapes. The same time period also included the origin of the terms "scientist" and "scientific community," the founding of scientific institutions, and increasing significance of the interactions with society and other aspects of culture.

The Maw (video game)

The Maw is a 2009 action-adventure video game developed by Twisted Pixel Games. Released for Xbox Live Arcade and Windows, the game centers on the extraterrestrial Frank and a purple, amorphous creature called The Maw, who have crash-landed their spacecraft on an alien planet. The player assumes the role of Frank and directs The Maw—which can take on the abilities of objects and fauna it consumes—via a leash.

Critical reception of The Maw was above average; both the Xbox 360 and Windows versions hold a rating of 75/100 on Metacritic, and respective ratings of 76.06% and 73.33% on GameRankings. The game won the 2008 Audience Choice award at PAX10, and was a finalist at the 2009 Independent Games Festival. As of year-end 2011, The Maw has moved more than 237,000 units.

Synopsis and gameplay

The Maw is set in a futuristic universe. The game begins with Frank, a pacifist bipedal alien, and The Maw, a purple one-eyed creature with large teeth, both having been captured by the Galactic Bounty Hunters. For unknown reasons the ship on which they are being held crash lands on a strange planet, killing all the crew. Alone, they set out for a communications tower in the distance while on the run from additional Galactic Bounty Hunters who have come to recapture them.

Mera Saathi

Mera Saathi is a 1985 Indian Bollywood film produced by K. Kesava Rao on Sree Brahmarambika Films banner and directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. Starring Jeetendra, Rajiv Kapoor, Jaya Prada and Mandakini in pivotal roles and music composed by Bappi Lahiri. The film is a remake of Telugu Movie Dharmaatmudu (1983), starring Krishnam Raju, Jayasudha in lead roles.

Plot

Ranga (Jeetendra) a rowdy lives alone, one day an unknown girl named Ragini (Jayaprada) entries into his house accidentally changes his way of living. Ranga comes to know she ran way house to protect herself from Banssy Das (Shakthi Kapoor) who want marry her for her property, Ranga protects her from him and marries her and lives a happy life. One day Ragini comes to know he is in crime line, she asks him to change his lifestyle; Ranga changes his entire lifestyle and joins as a worker in a factory, he & Ragini lives very happily they blessed with a daughter. After some time when the factory was in heavy losses Ranga takes the same factory in the lease, develops it and becomes a millionaire. After few years their daughter Shanthi (Mandakini) whom Ranga loves from than anyone else loves a guy Shyam (Rajeev Kapoor) who is in trap of Banssy Das, Ranga comes know this he doesn’t agree for their marriage but Shanthi marries Shyam without his permission, Shyam takes way the entire property of Ranga and sends him & Ragini away from their house, then Banssy Das cheats Shyam and keeps him in his custody, Ranga comes to know this he protects Shyam from Banssy Das, Shyam also realizes his mistakes and then they all live happily.
