The Eastern Mediterranean denotes the countries geographically to the east of the Mediterranean Sea. This is commonly interpreted in two ways; the region of Syria plus the island of Cyprus (also known as the Levant), and Turkey, which limits the definition to Western Asia, or the Levant plus Greece, and Egypt, thereby including European and African components to the definition.
The eastern Mediterranean populations share not only geographic position, but cuisine, certain customs, and a very long intertwined history.
The countries and territories of the Eastern Mediterranean include:
The following countries could be sometimes included under the term North-eastern Mediterranean:
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
MED or med may refer to:
Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image. One type of commonly known gas is steam.
The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increasing attention. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. For a comprehensive listing of these exotic states of matter see list of states of matter.
Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly including varying amounts of other higher alkanes, and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and/or hydrogen sulfide. It is formed when layers of decomposing plant and animal matter are exposed to intense heat and pressure supplied by existing under the surface over millions of years. The energy that the plants originally obtained from the sun is stored in the form of chemical bonds in the gas.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel used as a source of energy for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as fuel for vehicles and as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. It is a non-renewable resource.
Natural gas is found in deep underground rock formations or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs in coal beds and as methane clathrates. Petroleum is another resource and fossil fuel found in close proximity to, and with natural gas. Most natural gas was created over time by two mechanisms: biogenic and thermogenic. Biogenic gas is created by methanogenic organisms in marshes, bogs, landfills, and shallow sediments. Deeper in the earth, at greater temperature and pressure, thermogenic gas is created from buried organic material.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has inaugurated a new gas field off the Mediterranean Sea, North of Alexandria. It's called West Nile Delta Gas field and is considered the largest in the Mediterranean. It's expected to produce 900 million cubic feet of gas per day. The gas field holds reserves that exceed 5 trillion cubic feet. The discovery of vast reserves of liquefied natural gas (LNG) off the coasts of Israel and Cyprus was bound to bring equally vast consequences in its train. Among the least anticipated, perhaps, has been the creation of a new geopolitical entity in the eastern Mediterranean – a tripartite alliance that promises to bring both stability to the region, and the prospect of enormous technological, economic and environmental advances.
Energy ministers from Cyprus , Greece, Israel and Italy sign EastMed agreement 1,300-kilometer undersea gas pipeline, the longest in the world, from the area of the Leviathan reservoir, passing through the Cypriot gas reservoirs, Cyprus, Crete, Greece, and from there to Italy. An initial survey estimated the cost of the undersea segment of a pipeline with an annual capacity of 12-16 BCM at $5.7 billion. As in the case of the Nord Stream, it is possible that if additional large scale gas fields are discovered in Israel and Cyprus, it will be worthwhile laying two parallel pipelines capable of transporting 30 BCM of gas a year. http://www.euronews.net/ Turkish warships could be deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean as the row over gas and oil exploration escalates. The internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government has confirmed it is to start drilling off the divided island within days. Turkey's Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeated his country's opposition to exclusive economic zones agreed by Cyprus and Israel last year and said they will start drilling work.

Natural gas findings are flourishing in the Eastern Mediterranean, creating a dynamic emerging energy corridor that might transform the regional political equilibrium from conflict to cooperation. Such an energy corridor would enable Turkey, Europe and the non-oil producing states of the Middle East and North Africa to reduce their dependence on Persian Gulf petroleum as well as Russian and Iranian gas. Offshore production is a boon to Egypt, Israel, and Cyprus as these countries monetize their newfound reserves. Turkey and Greece, for their part, could become natural gas transport hubs. Could these shared hopes for a prosperous future drive longstanding conflicts toward resolution? Our panel will also consider the role these gas discoveries may play in a transition away from oil (in the f...
