Russia's old world to me is a deeply atmospheric place, full of passion and romance. And, of course, at her heart stands St Petersburg - majestic, elegant and beautiful.
Having recently watched the new version of Anna Karenina (2012) starring Kiera Knightley, I was moved to create this video which shows St Petersburg as the perfect setting for the love stories of two great Russian writers Count Leo Tolstoy and Alexander Pushkin. The love stories of Anna Karenina and Onegin are both deeply moving and, as with many love stories, tragic too.
But as well as the romance of the people is the captivating and often breathtaking beauty of the natural settings, costume, architecture and interiors. Old world Russia - a country to inspire writers, musicians, choreographers and architects. An aesthete's paradise.
The background music is the 1st Movement Of Piano Concerto No.2 by Rachmaninoff. The movie excerpts are from Anna Karenina (1997) played by Sophie Marceau, Onegin (1999) starring Ralph Fiennes and Russian Ark (2002).

Клэр Томалин родилась в Лондоне в 1933 году. Claire Tomalin talks about Charles Dickens and his career as a writer, how from his early age, he was forced to earn a living, how he filled the gaps in school education by observing Londoners on the streets, in theatres, prisons, public buildings, schools, courts, and parks. He was able to describe everything that he saw so vividly and accurately, that his very first novel The Pickwick Papers made Dickens famous at the tender age of twenty. Later, when Dickens's name was well-known far from the UK, young Leo Tolstoy became interested in his works – he even bought an English edition of David Copperfield.
Claire Tomalin will talk about an amazing diversity in Dickens's works, from comedies and tragedies, from thrillers and to historical narratives, from personal research of the child psychology to the panoramic observation of London’s life, from surrealism and to poetry.
Claire Tomalin, born in London in 1933, graduated from Cambridge, was literary editor of both the New Statesman magazine and the Sunday Times newspaper. In 1974 her book The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft won the Whitbread Book Award. Claire Tomalin has continued writing biographies, including highly acclaimed biographies of Katherine Mansfield and Jane Austen (the latter was translated into Russian by Alina Deriglazova in 2013) while her novel The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens published in 1990 won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography), the NCR Book Award for Non-Fiction and the Hawthornden Prize. Later the book was turned into a film starring Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones. Her biography of the seventeenth-century diarist Samuel Pepys published in 2002 won the Whitbread Book of the Year award. Claire continues to explore the lives of great people with her new biography Charles Dickens: A Life that has received very positive reviews, including The Times newspaper. For more than ten years Tomalin has been a member of the Board of the National Portrait Gallery of London and an honorary doctor of many universities.

Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes (/ˈfaɪnz/; born 27 May 1970) is an English film and stage actor. He is known for his portrayals of William Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Love (1998), for which he was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, Sir Robert Dudley in Elizabeth (1998), Commisar Danilov in Enemy at the Gates (2001), and for starring as Monsignor Timothy Howard in the second season of the TV series American Horror Story (2012-2013).
Early life and family
Fiennes was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, in 1970, the son of photographer Mark Fiennes and novelist Jennifer Lash. The youngest of six siblings, his elder siblings are actor Ralph Fiennes; filmmakers Sophie Fiennes and Martha Fiennes; composer Magnus Fiennes; conservationist Jacob Fiennes, his twin brother; and archaeologist Mike Emery, his foster brother. He is a third cousin to explorer Ranulph Fiennes and eighth cousin of the Prince of Wales.

Claire Tomalin will talk about an amazing diversity in Dickens's works, from comedies and tragedies, from thrillers and to historical narratives, from personal research of the child psychology to the panoramic observation of London’s life, from surrealism and to poetry. Claire Tomalin, born in London in 1933, graduated from Cambridge, was literary editor of both the New Statesman magazine and the Sunday Times newspaper. In 1974 her book The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft won the Whitbread Book Award. Claire Tomalin has continued writing biographies, including highly acclaimed biographies of Katherine Mansfield and Jane Austen (the latter was translated into Russian by Alina Deriglazova in 2013) while her novel The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens published in 1990 won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography), the NCR Book Award for Non-Fiction and the Hawthornden Prize. Later the book was turned into a film starring Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones. Russia's old world to me is a deeply atmospheric place, full of passion and romance. And, of course, at her heart stands St Petersburg - majestic, elegant and beautiful.
Having recently watched the new version of Anna Karenina (2012) starring Kiera Knightley, I was moved to create this video which shows St Petersburg as the perfect setting for the love stories of two great Russian writers Count Leo Tolstoy and Alexander Pushkin. The love stories of Anna Karenina and Onegin are both deeply moving and, as with many love stories, tragic too.
But as well as the romance of the people is the captivating and often breathtaking beauty of the natural settings, costume, architecture and interiors. Old world Russia - a country to inspire writers, musicians, choreographers and architects. An aesthete's paradise.
The background music is the 1st Movement Of Piano Concerto No.2 by Rachmaninoff. The movie excerpts are from Anna Karenina (1997) played by Sophie Marceau, Onegin (1999) starring Ralph Fiennes and Russian Ark (2002).

Клэр Томалин рассказывает о становлении Чарльза Диккенса как писателя: с самого раннего возраста он был вынужден самостоятельно зарабатывать на жизнь, а пробелы в школьном образовании восполнял наблюдениями за обитателями лондонский улиц, театров, тюрем, публичных домов, школ, судов, парков и рек. Диккенс описывал увиденное так ярко и занимательно, что уже самый первый его роман «Записки Пиквикского Клуба» принес двадцатилетнему писателю славу и успех. Уже потом, когда имя Диккенса стало звучать далеко за пределами Британии, к его романам проявил интерес молодой русский писатель Лев Толстой – и даже приобрел «Дэвида Копперфильда» на английском языке со словарем в придачу.
Клэр Томалин родилась в Лондоне в 1933 году. Окончив Newham College в Кембридже, начала работу в издательстве и занялась журналистикой, став литературным редактором в New Statement и The Sunday Times. В 1974 Клэр Томалин опубликовала свою первую книгу «Жизнь и смерть Мэри Уолстоункрафт», которая получила премию Уитбреда. Claire Tomalin talks about Charles Dickens and his career as a writer, how from his early age, he was forced to earn a living, how he filled the gaps in school education by observing Londoners on the streets, in theatres, prisons, public buildings, schools, courts, and parks. He was able to describe everything that he saw so vividly and accurately, that his very first novel The Pickwick Papers made Dickens famous at the tender age of twenty. Later, when Dickens's name was well-known far from the UK, young Leo Tolstoy became interested in his works – he even bought an English edition of David Copperfield.
Claire Tomalin will talk about an amazing diversity in Dickens's works, from comedies and tragedies, from thrillers and to historical narratives, from personal research of the child psychology to the panoramic observation of London’s life, from surrealism and to poetry.
Claire Tomalin, born in London in 1933, graduated from Cambridge, was literary editor of both the New Statesman magazine and the Sunday Times newspaper. In 1974 her book The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft won the Whitbread Book Award. Claire Tomalin has continued writing biographies, including highly acclaimed biographies of Katherine Mansfield and Jane Austen (the latter was translated into Russian by Alina Deriglazova in 2013) while her novel The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens published in 1990 won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography), the NCR Book Award for Non-Fiction and the Hawthornden Prize. Later the book was turned into a film starring Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones. Her biography of the seventeenth-century diarist Samuel Pepys published in 2002 won the Whitbread Book of the Year award. Клэр Томалин рассказывает о становлении Чарльза Диккенса как писателя: с самого раннего возраста он был вынужден самостоятельно зарабатывать на жизнь, а пробелы в школьном образовании восполнял наблюдениями за обитателями лондонский улиц, театров, тюрем, публичных домов, школ, судов, парков и рек. Диккенс описывал увиденное так ярко и занимательно, что уже самый первый его роман «Записки Пиквикского Клуба» принес двадцатилетнему писателю славу и успех. Уже потом, когда имя Диккенса стало звучать далеко за пределами Британии, к его романам проявил интерес молодой русский писатель Лев Толстой – и даже приобрел «Дэвида Копперфильда» на английском языке со словарем в придачу.
Клэр Томалин родилась в Лондоне в 1933 году. Окончив Newham College в Кембридже, начала работу в издательстве и занялась журналистикой, став литературным редактором в New Statement и The Sunday Times. В 1974 Клэр Томалин опубликовала свою первую книгу «Жизнь и смерть Мэри Уолстоункрафт», которая получила премию Уитбреда. Claire Tomalin talks about Charles Dickens and his career as a writer, how from his early age, he was forced to earn a living, how he filled the gaps in school education by observing Londoners on the streets, in theatres, prisons, public buildings, schools, courts, and parks. He was able to describe everything that he saw so vividly and accurately, that his very first novel The Pickwick Papers made Dickens famous at the tender age of twenty. Later, when Dickens's name was well-known far from the UK, young Leo Tolstoy became interested in his works – he even bought an English edition of David Copperfield.
Claire Tomalin will talk about an amazing diversity in Dickens's works, from comedies and tragedies, from thrillers and to historical narratives, from personal research of the child psychology to the panoramic observation of London’s life, from surrealism and to poetry.
Claire Tomalin, born in London in 1933, graduated from Cambridge, was literary editor of both the New Statesman magazine and the Sunday Times newspaper. In 1974 her book The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft won the Whitbread Book Award. Claire Tomalin has continued writing biographies, including highly acclaimed biographies of Katherine Mansfield and Jane Austen (the latter was translated into Russian by Alina Deriglazova in 2013) while her novel The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens published in 1990 won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography), the NCR Book Award for Non-Fiction and the Hawthornden Prize. Later the book was turned into a film starring Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones. Her biography of the seventeenth-century diarist Samuel Pepys published in 2002 won the Whitbread Book of the Year award. Actor Joseph Fiennes on the Movie "Risen", His Siblings and Acting Career
RISEN is the Biblical story of the Resurrection and the weeks that followed, as seen through the eyes of an unbelieving Clavius, a high-ranking Roman Military Tribune, played by actor Joseph Fiennes. Clavius is instructed by Pontius Pilate to oversee the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, and to ensure his radical followers don’t steal the body and claim resurrection. Despite the tomb’s protection by Roman guards, the body goes missing. Only by finding the remains of Jesus can they disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah.
