Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. Open-source software may be developed in a collaborative public manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development.
The open-source model, or collaborative competition development from multiple independent sources, generates an increasingly more diverse scope of design perspective than any one company is capable of developing and sustaining long term. A report by the Standish Group (from 2008) states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.
In 1997, Eric Raymond published The Cathedral and the Bazaar, a reflective analysis of the hacker community and free software principles. The paper received significant attention in early 1998, and was one factor in motivating Netscape Communications Corporation to release their popular Netscape Communicator Internet suite as free software. This source code subsequently became the basis behind SeaMonkey, Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird and KompoZer.

The film begins with glimpses of Raymond, a Linux IPO, Torvalds, the idea of Open Source, Perens, Stallman, then sets the historical stage in the early days of hackers and computer hobbyists when code was shared freely. It discusses how change came in 1978 as Bill Gates, in his Open Letter to Hobbyists, pointedly prodded hobbyists to pay up. Stallman relates his struggles with proprietary software vendors at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, leading to his departure to focus on the development of free software, and the GNU project. Torvalds describes the development of the Linux kernel, the GNU/Linux naming controversy, Linux's further evolution, and its commercialization. Raymond and Stallman clarify the philosophy of free software versus communism and capitalism, as well as the deve...

Several interviews with experts in free software and open source.
https://twitter.com/socialsquare http://www.socialsquare.dk/ (BIT BLUEPRINT mentioned in the video is now known as Socialsquare) Have you ever wondered - What is open source? We made this stop motion video in an attempt to explain it for anyone. This, simply to help scale the positive principles within the open source paradigm. The video itself is open for everyone to use, modify and share. So feel free to do that! We made this video to explain the idea of Open Source. We wanted it to be easy to understand - even for people with no prior knowledge of Open Source or Free Software. However, history is never simple. We can only urge people to do further research into the history and as such the development of open source. Kræn Hansen wrote this blogpost to explain our thoughts behind th...
A simple explanation of how open source projects manage change as well as the structure, roles, and terminology of open source software.
Due to a growing trend of users using linux, using open source software and then spitting in the faces of the developers, the community as a whole, the open source ecosystem, how it works and what this side of the fence stands for in comparison to the proprietary Microsoft windows operating system and proprietary software world.... I think we need to take a step back, get educated, acknowledge and appreciate how this wonderful operating system and open source ecosystem came into existence. Many of us take the history for granted and make uninformed criticisms with the mind set of a paying Microsoft Windows customer wanting the SAME experience, SAME technical direction and vision with an ideology that is thankfully completely and utterly incompatible with this view. If you don't like it or...
Steve Fisher at TEDxRedDeer, Alberta, Canada, October 20, 2011 Hear how open source offers possibilities and new ways to solve old problems; new perspectives using collaboration, not isolation; and can multiply knowledge, effort, inspiration, creativity, and innovation. Film directed by Nick Saik. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certa...
Here at XDA we love open source software. Not just because of its cost, though that doesn't hurt. There are many reasons open source software is great: security, quality, freedom, customizability and being able to see what the code does for yourself. These are the reasons we like open source software. But let's not be blind fanbois, there are - as the title says - problems with open source software. In today's video Jayce talks about the problems with open source software. He interviews Huw Collingbourne of RantsandRaves.co.uk to find out what he believes is the problem with open source software. Do you agree or disagee? Check out this video to see what he has to say. Due to that, a lot of forums have emerged, with people helping each other and discovering new things together. So, what is the best way to contribute to the open source community? How should you approach those people those projects and benefit yourself...
Tsvetan Usunov founded Olimex, and runs the company with the ideal of making development itself an open process. His philosophy is that being open from the start of development pulls in your most dedicated customer base to help guide development, avoid pitfalls, and ensure that the best features make it to the final product. On of his most recent and more ambitious projects is to develop a completely open source laptop. This is the topic of the talk he presented at the Hackaday | Belgrade conference. The Open Source Beehives project is a collaborative response to the threat faced by bee populations in industrialised nations around the world. We design hives that can support bee colonies in a sustainable way, to monitor and track the health and behaviour of a colony as it develops. Each hive contains an open source sensory kit, The Smart Citizen Kit, which can transmit to an open data platform: www.smartcitizen.me The OSBH project is a collaboration between Open Tech Forever and Fab Lab Barcelona. Please join our community and help save the bees at www.opensourcebeehives.net.
It's a video game in a box! Using a Teagueduino and a few inputs and outputs, we put together a physical side-scrolling video game. To control it, there's a knob on the side. As time advances the game gets faster and faster -- can you avoid all the obstacles and make it to the end? Watch the second half of the video for an overview of how everything is hooked up. The complete source code is available on http://teagueduino.org And if you're curious about Teagueduino and want to buy one, support the project on Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/teague/teagueduino-learn-to-make

Each hive contains an open source sensory kit, The Smart Citizen Kit (SCK), which can transmit to an open data platform: Smartcitizen.me These sensor enhanced hive designs are open and freely available online, the data collected from each hive is published together with geolocations allowing for a further comparison and analysis of the hives.

www.knitic.com by Varvara Guljajeva & Mar Canet http://www.varvarag.info/ ; http://www.mcanet.info/ Knitic is an open source knitting machine, which controls a Brother electronic knitting machine via Arduino. The old 'brain' or control panel has been removed and replaced by Arduino, which allows us direct and immediate control over the needles. With it, one can knit as long a pattern as desired, as well as modify the pattern on the fly. Why are we developing Knitic? Because we feel the knitting machine, as the first domestic fabrication tool, has been totally overlooked in the age of digital fabrication.
hey, you said it ain't bad to unveil your politics
and hey, you said it ain't bad to show your special tricks
you'll find out, wait patiently and let things take their course
hey, you shouldn't keep back your thoughts and good ideas
and hey, you shouldn't detect your ancient fears
it's yourself who keeps working the idea behind it all
