Allen Jones is best known for sexually provocative sculptures like Chair, 1969, which present the female figure as a piece of furniture. Tate Shots visited him at his London studio to find out how he progressed from painting and drawing the human body to producing life-size mannequin sculptures that, as he puts it, 'were very much made to offend the accepted canons of what fine art might be'. Allen Jones' work features in Glam! The Performance of Style, at Tate Liverpool, 8 February - 12 May 2013
This picture version was the public's very first hearing - and also seeing - of this splendid, world-famous song, published in 1936. Sung by Alan Jones in the movie 'Firefly'. The actual melody was taken from a classical piece by nineteenth-century composer Rudolf Friml.
From Jake Auerbach Films. The first three minutes of this feature documentary.

excerpt from: Scenes Seen with Allen Jones a film by Michael Blackwood (1970, 28 minutes, color) Website: http://www.michaelblackwoodproductions.com/artm_jones.php During his days as a top member of the Pop Art movement in Britain, Jones had evolved a singular genre of imagery: totemic forms of torso-less legs, sheathed in vinyl, which have become his artistic "icons." His graphic works, drawings, paintings and sculptures all had erotic overtones. Jones is introduced in his London studio, where he is developing an idea for a new painting as he studies his model - a woman clad in vinyl. Other scenes include a visit to a London tailor, where the artist's wife is being fitted with one of Jones' costume designs for the movie "A Clockwork Orange" and a rehearsal of an eccentric stage musica...

You wonder why you wonder when,
You wonder how now and then,
How you became who you've become
You are here, And yet you dream of being there,
Of being where you think the good life has begun
Every darkened hallway, Every fallen dream,
Every battle lost and Every shadow in between
Will bring you to your knees and Closer to the reason
And there's no making cases, For getting out or trading places
And there's no turning back, No you are here
Who can say who made the choice,
In the matter of your birth
Who brought about that fateful day,
Well you are here and born with fire and desire
You're the only one can stand in your own way
And every broken arrow, Every hardened smile
Every foolish gamble and Every lonely mile
Will bring you to your knees and Closer to the reason
And there's no making cases For getting out or trading places
And there's no turning back No you are here
And every sign of love, Every seed that's growing
Every sweet surrender To that silent knowing
Will bring you to your knees and Closer to the reason
And there's no making cases For getting out or trading places
