The general design hasn’t really changed between the lifeproof fre for the iPhone 5s and 6. The back of the case looks pretty similar and the front hasn’t really changed either but they have removed the plastic piece around the camera on the front.
Installation of the case is pretty simple and requires you to snap two pieces that you snap together. The gasket that sits at the bottom of the latch cover still can be lost if you’re not careful but we’ve noticed that the green o-ring comes out much easier than the o-ring on the previous generation.
In terms of Protection, the Fre is waterproof up to 6.6ft and droppable from 6.6 ft. We’ve dropped our Fre several times on concrete and the iPhone’s fine but the Fre did crack on a 6 ft drop. If you’re concerned about that, well, think about all the times when you’re actually going to be dropping your iPhone 6 from 6 ft.
In terms of water protection, we didn’t take the Fre down to 6.6 ft but checked its waterproofing with a water test as prescribed by LifeProof. In terms of dust, since it’s waterproof, it’s going to be dustproof if you keep all the ports sealed. The only places that dust can enter the case is around the lightning port and headphone jack cutouts so dust and debris entering the case will be kept to a minimum.
For screen protection, the plastic screen protector does a decent job of protecting your iPhone’s touchscreen as you can see in our face-first drop tests. LifeProof does recommend that you remove all films prior to installing the Fre. Given how tightly the Fre fits around the iPhone, I wouldn’t try to use another screen protector.
Functionality is where the Fre falls flat on it’s face. Apple-branded accessories will work but nothing else. The cutout for the lightning port will not fit your Amazon basics cables and the headphone cutout will not fit headphone jacks that are slightly larger than Apple’s Earpods. There is a caveat for the headphones as LifeProof does include its signature threaded waterproof headphone jack extension so that fits with any type of headphones.
Also, you can’t attach a wrisstrap to the Fre. On the previous versions you could attach a wriststrap via where the headphone jack plug attached to the case but they’ve removed that feature on the 6 version of the Fre.Using your iPhone 6 in one-hand isn’t great as the Fre’s back isn’t very rubbery so it doesn’t sit on the palm of your hand too well.
The LifeProof Fre isn’t great with sound. Unlike the 5/5S versions of the case, sound coming from the Fre isn’t louder. In fact it’s a little muted which is weird since there is still some sort of acoustic chamber on the back of the case but out of the 4 tests I did for sound coming out of the bottom speaker, the Fre was slightly muted. We will note that the Fre does cover most of the mics with the mic at the bottom of the iPhone being the only one that has one of those thin acoustic membranes.
In terms of the loudness coming from the ear piece speaker, it is a bit muted. On our tests, the iPhone in the Fre averaged a difference of 5-10 db’s lower than the iPhone without the Fre. This isn’t much but it still will mute it.
In terms of accessing your iPhone’s touchscreen, there is still a gap and it is noticeable but does not degrade the sensitivity of the iPhone too much (or that we noticed). Getting to the rest of the screen is quite easy as there is nothing that gets in the way.
On to the screen viewablity of the case, there are issues galore. The glare on the screen protector is generally noticeable and the screen protector still diffuses your iPhone’s touchscreen. Rainbowing is still an issue on the Fre but I feel its been a bit minimized. The screen doesn’t perma-stick to the iPhone like the 5 version did but you can still see the rainbows if you’re looking for them. Several viewers have also noted this with their Fre’s.

As most people know, the LifeProof FRE for the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus is a waterproof case that is drop protective to 2 meters. What I didn’t realize, having never used the FRE before, was what a very nice user experience this case has. Waterproof cases are well known for being practical and protective, but less than pleasant to use: issues with sound quality and screen protectors are perhaps the most common complaints. The FRE, however, is a simply lovely case to use. Sound quality, while not perfect, is quite good (and slightly better than the sound quality of the LifeProof NUUD), and the screen protector is the best plastic screen protector I have yet encountered. There is a little bit of glare, and a small issue with rainbowing, particularly when the humidity is higher, but it is only noticeable when the phone is off or the case is at an angle, and I really do not find it to be a major issue.
As far as screen usability is concerned, the FRE is great. The Touch ID membrane is very sensitive and seems to work just as well as the Touch ID on a naked iPhone. As I said before, I am very impressed with the quality of the built-in screen protector. Even though it is plastic, and non adhesive (which are two things that usually seem to be the kiss of death for screen protectors), there is a minimal air gap between the screen protector and the phone’s touchscreen, giving it very good sensitivity. It isn’t as good as the bare touchscreen of the LifeProof NUUD, but it is very impressive nonetheless. 3D Touch works without incident and optical clarity is very good. I really have no complaints about the screen protector. Swiping up and down is perfect, and there are no problems getting the applications tabs to appear if you press on the side of the screen.
Pros:
* Waterproof to 6.6 ft (2 meters) for up to one hour.
* Drop rated for 6.6 feet.
* Dustproof and snowproof.
* Very good audio quality.
* Pleasant amount of grip and good hand feel.
* Plastic screen protector has a minimal air gap, excellent optical quality and works very well.
* The Touch ID membrane is very sensitive and works perfectly.
Cons:
* The clear window for the Apple logo on the back, while pretty, is bound to be a weak spot in the event of impact.
* Screen protector suffers from a small amount of glare, and exhibits some rainbowing in higher humidity conditions.
Conclusion: Overall, I just love the FRE. It is slim, surprisingly lightweight, and doesn’t detract very much at all from the experience of using your iPhone. The only areas where the FRE experience really differs from that of using a regular slim protective case would be that it is slightly bigger, the screen protector, while very good, is not the same as a naked glass screen, and the sound quality is slightly degraded. Slightly is really the word, here, however. It is absolutely usable and really doesn’t bother me at all.

Based on my time with the Fre Power, I’ve given the case a score of 3.8 Eh’s out of 5 which is a tad higher than what we thought of LifeProof Fre’s but not as high as the Nuud. In terms of design, this is a massive iPhone though its not as big as the Ballistic Hardcore and its sleeve. It also adds a bit of weight to your iPhone but this should be surprising given that this case comes with a spare battery and is pretty tough.
Installation of the case is quite simple as you snap two pieces together. And like other LifeProof products, you use a coin to take it apart.
In terms of the build quality, the Fre Power feels better built than the other LifeProof cases. It feels solid and you’ll see why in a minute. The only issue that we had with the build quality, and this is something that we’ve said for all the LifeProof cases is that the case will show wear and tear quicker than other cases.
In terms of protection, the Fre Power is shockproof up to 6.6 ft and waterproof up to 6.6 ft. We did a full torture test for this case so if you want to see us hurt the iPhone, check that video out.
For water protection, LifeProof sticks with their brightly covered o-rings along the edge of the case and at the bottom of their latch. We generally didn’t have any issues with the waterproofing but if you do get the Fre Power, keep an eye on the o-rings as if they get dirty, your going to lose your iPhone.
In terms of accessing your iPhone inside the case, there’s some really great things about the Fre and some not so great. In general, it handles just as well as the Fre at the buttons are bit tougher to use and smaller, the Touch ID membrane works quite well.
Sound coming from your iPhone is quite unique. Unlike other LifeProof cases that have the sound out the bottom, the Fre Power has sound coming out the back through these two slits. Covering up the slits will essentially mute your iPhone.
In terms of voice, there is a bit of vibrating through the ear piece speaker which is annoying if you’ve never used a waterproof case but from all the ones we’ve used that’s the norm. The mic on the bottom, like the speaker is moved to the back as well. I didn’t really notice a difference in call quality on my end as the microphones on the iPhone seem to do a pretty good job of picking up my voice.
The cutout for the flash is actually large enough that no noticeable clipping will occur.
No before I before I talk about the battery, I’m going to talk the screen protector. There is a tiny gap between the screen protector and the iPhone but its not noticeable and because the screen protector covers the whole iPhone, you can get to every part of the iPHone’s touchscreen.
In terms of screen viewability, I’ve basically said this about every Fre product that I’ve reviewed which is how much the screen viewability sucks. The worst part of is the diffusion of the iPhone’s Retina HD screen which really sucks the joy out of using your 1000 dollar iPhone.
The 2600 mah battery will basically add another days worth of battery under my normal day use. If you ration your battery use, you could probably get 3-4 days of use with the Fre Power. The battery charges fairly quickly and like all other battery cases, you can switch between charging and not charging by pushing on the only button on the back which also tells you how much power is left.
Unlike some of the earlier Morphie case, the Fre Power allows you to sync your iPHone through the case using a Micro-USB cable. LifeProof includes a micro-USB cable and I would suggest that you hold onto that cable since its optimized for the Fre Power case which I believe is true because charging it with other cables was incredibly slow.

This is one of the first waterproof and shockproof cases for the iPhone 6. At Mobile Reviews Eh!, we've tested tons of Fre's and it since to see LifeProof change some its design their Fre. The back has a bit more texture and the rain-bowing effect seems to be gone but they still use a screen protector that diffuses the iPhone's touchscreen which is frustrated given that upgraded displays of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus's.

We generally didn’t have any issues with the waterproofing but if you do get the Fre Power, keep an eye on the o-rings as if they get dirty, your going to lose your iPhone. In terms of accessing your iPhone inside the case, there’s some really great things about the Fre and some not so great. In general, it handles just as well as the Fre at the buttons are bit tougher to use and smaller, the Touch ID membrane works quite well. Sound coming from your iPhone is quite unique. Unlike other LifeProof cases that have the sound out the bottom, the Fre Power has sound coming out the back through these two slits. Covering up the slits will essentially mute your iPhone. In terms of voice, there is a bit of vibrating through the ear piece speaker which is annoying if you’ve never used a waterproof case but from all the ones we’ve used that’s the norm. The mic on the bottom, like the speaker is moved to the back as well. I didn’t really notice a difference in call quality on my end as the microphones on the iPhone seem to do a pretty good job of picking up my voice. The cutout for the flash is actually large enough that no noticeable clipping will occur. No before I before I talk about the battery, I’m going to talk the screen protector. There is a tiny gap between the screen protector and the iPhone but its not noticeable and because the screen protector covers the whole iPhone, you can get to every part of the iPHone’s touchscreen. In terms of screen viewability, I’ve basically said this about every Fre product that I’ve reviewed which is how much the screen viewability sucks. The worst part of is the diffusion of the iPhone’s Retina HD screen which really sucks the joy out of using your 1000 dollar iPhone. The 2600 mah battery will basically add another days worth of battery under my normal day use. If you ration your battery use, you could probably get 3-4 days of use with the Fre Power. The battery charges fairly quickly and like all other battery cases, you can switch between charging and not charging by pushing on the only button on the back which also tells you how much power is left. Unlike some of the earlier Morphie case, the Fre Power allows you to sync your iPHone through the case using a Micro-USB cable. LifeProof includes a micro-USB cable and I would suggest that you hold onto that cable since its optimized for the Fre Power case which I believe is true because charging it with other cables was incredibly slow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to stay in the loop! Loving the LifeProof FRE: An Excellent Waterproof Case for the iPhone 6s Plus!
As most people know, the LifeProof FRE for the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus is a waterproof case that is drop protective to 2 meters. What I didn’t realize, having never used the FRE before, was what a very nice user experience this case has. Waterproof cases are well known for being practical and protective, but less than pleasant to use: issues with sound quality and screen protectors are perhaps the most common complaints. The FRE, however, is a simply lovely case to use. Sound quality, while not perfect, is quite good (and slightly better than the sound quality of the LifeProof NUUD), and the screen protector is the best plastic screen protector I have yet encountered. There is a little bit of glare, and a small issue with rainbowing, particularly when the humidity is higher, but it is on... -

Installation of the case is pretty simple and requires you to snap two pieces that you snap together. The gasket that sits at the bottom of the latch cover still can be lost if you’re not careful but we’ve noticed that the green o-ring comes out much easier than the o-ring on the previous generation.
In terms of Protection, the Fre is waterproof up to 6.6ft and droppable from 6.6 ft. We’ve dropped our Fre several times on concrete and the iPhone’s fine but the Fre did crack on a 6 ft drop. If you’re concerned about that, well, think about all the times when you’re actually going to be dropping your iPhone 6 from 6 ft.
In terms of water protection, we didn’t take the Fre down to 6.6 ft but checked its waterproofing with a water test as prescribed by LifeProof. In terms of dust, since it’s waterproof, it’s going to be dustproof if you keep all the ports sealed. The only places that dust can enter the case is around the lightning port and headphone jack cutouts so dust and debris entering the case will be kept to a minimum.
For screen protection, the plastic screen protector does a decent job of protecting your iPhone’s touchscreen as you can see in our face-first drop tests. LifeProof does recommend that you remove all films prior to installing the Fre. Given how tightly the Fre fits around the iPhone, I wouldn’t try to use another screen protector.
Functionality is where the Fre falls flat on it’s face. Apple-branded accessories will work but nothing else. The cutout for the lightning port will not fit your Amazon basics cables and the headphone cutout will not fit headphone jacks that are slightly larger than Apple’s Earpods. There is a caveat for the headphones as LifeProof does include its signature threaded waterproof headphone jack extension so that fits with any type of headphones.
Also, you can’t attach a wrisstrap to the Fre. On the previous versions you could attach a wriststrap via where the headphone jack plug attached to the case but they’ve removed that feature on the 6 version of the Fre.Using your iPhone 6 in one-hand isn’t great as the Fre’s back isn’t very rubbery so it doesn’t sit on the palm of your hand too well.
The LifeProof Fre isn’t great with sound. Unlike the 5/5S versions of the case, sound coming from the Fre isn’t louder. In fact it’s a little muted which is weird since there is still some sort of acoustic chamber on the back of the case but out of the 4 tests I did for sound coming out of the bottom speaker, the Fre was slightly muted. We will note that the Fre does cover most of the mics with the mic at the bottom of the iPhone being the only one that has one of those thin acoustic membranes.
In terms of the loudness coming from the ear piece speaker, it is a bit muted. On our tests, the iPhone in the Fre averaged a difference of 5-10 db’s lower than the iPhone without the Fre. This isn’t much but it still will mute it.
In terms of accessing your iPhone’s touchscreen, there is still a gap and it is noticeable but does not degrade the sensitivity of the iPhone too much (or that we noticed). Getting to the rest of the screen is quite easy as there is nothing that gets in the way.
On to the screen viewablity of the case, there are issues galore. The glare on the screen protector is generally noticeable and the screen protector still diffuses your iPhone’s touchscreen. Rainbowing is still an issue on the Fre but I feel its been a bit minimized. The screen doesn’t perma-stick to the iPhone like the 5 version did but you can still see the rainbows if you’re looking for them. Several viewers have also noted this with their Fre’s.

As most people know, the LifeProof FRE for the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus is a waterproof case that is drop protective to 2 meters. What I didn’t realize, having never used the FRE before, was what a very nice user experience this case has. Waterproof cases are well known for being practical and protective, but less than pleasant to use: issues with sound quality and screen protectors are perhaps the most common complaints. The FRE, however, is a simply lovely case to use. Sound quality, while not perfect, is quite good (and slightly better than the sound quality of the LifeProof NUUD), and the screen protector is the best plastic screen protector I have yet encountered. There is a little bit of glare, and a small issue with rainbowing, particularly when the humidity is higher, but it is only noticeable when the phone is off or the case is at an angle, and I really do not find it to be a major issue.
As far as screen usability is concerned, the FRE is great. The Touch ID membrane is very sensitive and seems to work just as well as the Touch ID on a naked iPhone. As I said before, I am very impressed with the quality of the built-in screen protector. Even though it is plastic, and non adhesive (which are two things that usually seem to be the kiss of death for screen protectors), there is a minimal air gap between the screen protector and the phone’s touchscreen, giving it very good sensitivity. It isn’t as good as the bare touchscreen of the LifeProof NUUD, but it is very impressive nonetheless. 3D Touch works without incident and optical clarity is very good. I really have no complaints about the screen protector. Swiping up and down is perfect, and there are no problems getting the applications tabs to appear if you press on the side of the screen.

Slightly is really the word, here, however. It is absolutely usable and really doesn’t bother me at all.

As most people know, the LifeProof FRE for the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus is a waterproof case that is drop protective to 2 meters. What I didn’t realize, having never used the FRE before, was what a very nice user experience this case has. Waterproof cases are well known for being practical and protective, but less than pleasant to use: issues with sound quality and screen protectors are perhaps the most common complaints. The FRE, however, is a simply lovely case to use. Sound quality, while not perfect, is quite good (and slightly better than the sound quality of the LifeProof NUUD), and the screen protector is the best plastic screen protector I have yet encountered. There is a little bit of glare, and a small issue with rainbowing, particularly when the humidity is higher, but it is only noticeable when the phone is off or the case is at an angle, and I really do not find it to be a major issue.
As far as screen usability is concerned, the FRE is great. The Touch ID membrane is very sensitive and seems to work just as well as the Touch ID on a naked iPhone. Based on my time with the Fre Power, I’ve given the case a score of 3.8 Eh’s out of 5 which is a tad higher than what we thought of LifeProof Fre’s but not as high as the Nuud. In terms of design, this is a massive iPhone though its not as big as the Ballistic Hardcore and its sleeve. It also adds a bit of weight to your iPhone but this should be surprising given that this case comes with a spare battery and is pretty tough.
Installation of the case is quite simple as you snap two pieces together. And like other LifeProof products, you use a coin to take it apart.
In terms of the build quality, the Fre Power feels better built than the other LifeProof cases. It feels solid and you’ll see why in a minute. The only issue that we had with the build quality, and this is something that we’ve said for all the LifeProof cases is that the case will show wear and tear quicker than other cases.
In terms of protection, the Fre Power is shockproof up to 6.6 ft and waterproof up to 6.6 ft. We did a full torture test for this case so if you want to see us hurt the iPhone, check that video out.
For water protection, LifeProof sticks with their brightly covered o-rings along the edge of the case and at the bottom of their latch. We generally didn’t have any issues with the waterproofing but if you do get the Fre Power, keep an eye on the o-rings as if they get dirty, your going to lose your iPhone.
In terms of accessing your iPhone inside the case, there’s some really great things about the Fre and some not so great. In general, it handles just as well as the Fre at the buttons are bit tougher to use and smaller, the Touch ID membrane works quite well.
Sound coming from your iPhone is quite unique. Unlike other LifeProof cases that have the sound out the bottom, the Fre Power has sound coming out the back through these two slits. Covering up the slits will essentially mute your iPhone.
In terms of voice, there is a bit of vibrating through the ear piece speaker which is annoying if you’ve never used a waterproof case but from all the ones we’ve used that’s the norm. The mic on the bottom, like the speaker is moved to the back as well. I didn’t really notice a difference in call quality on my end as the microphones on the iPhone seem to do a pretty good job of picking up my voice.
The cutout for the flash is actually large enough that no noticeable clipping will occur.
No before I before I talk about the battery, I’m going to talk the screen protector. There is a tiny gap between the screen protector and the iPhone but its not noticeable and because the screen protector covers the whole iPhone, you can get to every part of the iPHone’s touchscreen.
In terms of screen viewability, I’ve basically said this about every Fre product that I’ve reviewed which is how much the screen viewability sucks. The worst part of is the diffusion of the iPhone’s Retina HD screen which really sucks the joy out of using your 1000 dollar iPhone.
The 2600 mah battery will basically add another days worth of battery under my normal day use. If you ration your battery use, you could probably get 3-4 days of use with the Fre Power. The battery charges fairly quickly and like all other battery cases, you can switch between charging and not charging by pushing on the only button on the back which also tells you how much power is left.
Unlike some of the earlier Morphie case, the Fre Power allows you to sync your iPHone through the case using a Micro-USB cable. LifeProof includes a micro-USB cable and I would suggest that you hold onto that cable since its optimized for the Fre Power case which I believe is true because charging it with other cables was incredibly slow.
