Thameslink is a 68-station main-line route in the British railway system running 225 km (140 mi) north to south through London from Bedford to Brighton, serving both London Gatwick Airport and London Luton Airport, with a suburban loop serving Sutton, Mitcham and Wimbledon and a suburban line via Catford and Bromley South to Sevenoaks. It opened as a through service in 1988 and by 1998 was severely overcrowded, carrying more than 28,000 passengers in the morning peak. Almost all the services are currently operated by Thameslink.
The Thameslink Programme is a major £5.5 billion scheme to extend the service to a further 100 stations and to greatly increase capacity on the central London section to accommodate more frequent and longer trains, scheduled for completion in 2018.
In January 2016 a proposal was put out for consultation that responsibility for some local London rail services, but not necessarily including Thameslink services, might be transferred from the Department for Transport to Transport for London, to create a London Suburban Metro.
Gatwick Airport(IATA: LGW, ICAO: EGKK) is 2.7 nautical miles (5.0 km; 3.1 mi) north of the centre of Crawley,West Sussex, and 29.5 miles (47.5 km) south of Central London. Also known as London Gatwick, it is London's second-largest international airport and the second-busiest (by total passenger traffic) in the United Kingdom (after Heathrow). Gatwick is Europe's leading airport for point-to-point flights and has the world's busiest single-use runway, with a maximum of 55 aircraft movements per hour. Its two terminals (North and South) cover an area of 98,000 m2 (1,050,000 sq ft) and 160,000 m2 (1,700,000 sq ft), respectively. In 2015, 40.3 million passengers passed through the airport, a 5.6 per cent increase compared with 2014.
From 1978 to 2008, many flights to and from the United States used Gatwick because of restrictions on the use of Heathrow implemented in the Bermuda II agreement between the UK and the US.US Airways, Gatwick's last remaining US carrier, ended service from Gatwick on 30 March 2013. This leaves Gatwick without a scheduled US airline for the first time in over 35 years. The airport is a base for scheduled airlines British Airways (BA), EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Virgin Atlantic and charter operators such as Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. Gatwick is unique amongst London's airports in its representation of the three main airline business models: full service, low-/no frills and charter. As of April 2015, these respectively accounted for 30 percent, 64 percent and 6 percent of Gatwick's seat capacity.

Looking at the new 12 carriage Thameslink Class 700 trains, including a sample ride between London Bridge and East Croydon stations. Built by Seimens and from their Desiro City product range, these trains are configured in 8 carriage and 12 carriage formats. Internally they are of a full walk-through design so that when one part of the train becomes crowded passengers can walk to adjacent carriages which may be emptier... experience on other trains which have the same feature suggests that sometimes doing this can result in passengers finding vacant seats. To encourage passengers to do this the electronic passenger information screens include "train loading information" which shows the occupancy status of each carriage.
New trains are coming to the Thameslink line, and Londonist got an exclusive look at one of those already built by Siemens in Germany. Geoff Marshall welcomes you aboard for a test drive.
Today we are in Central London along the Thameslink line. Thameslink operates a north-south railway network through London, connecting Luton and Gatwick Airports with major stations in London, such as St. Pancras International, Farringdon, Blackfriars, and London Bridge. The line is quite unusual, in that it actually crosses the city of London instead of terminating at one of the terminals. The film begins at St. Pancras International station, where the Thameslink platforms only recently opened in 2007. We then move to Farringdon, where there is a direct interchange between Thameslink and the London Underground Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The final part of the film shows City Thameslink station. Enjoy!

Video: My first ever ride on the brand new Thameslink Class 700 Desiro City train, from St Pancras International to East Croydon. Very nice and spacious train, very technologically advanced with the onboard information displays are something to marvel at. Just like new London Underground and Overground trains, they are completely walkthrough, and also they operated under Automatic Train Operation (ATO) in the core St Pancras to Blackfriars Thameslink section. The train has capacity sensors that shows when and where there is a lot of people at present in a carriage, it then displays on the screens the standing and seating spaces available. Also, there is a live display of where and when the toilets are being used... pretty unique and very high tech. For long distance journeys, the lack of t...
This video is property of Train_PlaneHub, "RachaelMatt" 1080p HD! Only the week prior to this Thameslink operated its first class 700 in passenger operation between London Bridge & Brighton. Over the course of the week they have been operating them only a few times a day on certain services, so I decided I'd try and get one and take it for a spin. Over the coming weeks the Class 700's will start rolling out much more frequently between Bedford & Brighton so look out for them. I travelled on 700109, which was operating the 14:54 from London St. Pancras where I travelled on it as far as Gatwick Airport. This video includes some footage of the service arriving and departing from outside as well as a walk through and look around inside the new unit. Overall my opinion of them is good. Lo...
Getting to the milestone of the first passenger service for the Class 700 Desiro City has been a real team effort. 115 brand new, state of the art Siemens trains have started to join the Thameslink route and here are some of the team behind making that happen.
