Lea (surname)

Lea is an English surname. It originating from the Old English Lēah, which predates the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. After the Norman Conquest, an infusion of Norman, French, and Latin entered into the lexicon of England, resulting in the development of multiple spelling and phonetic variants of the surname. Examples of these variations include the more common version of the surname, "Lee", as well as less common versions, such as Lei, Ley, and Leigh. Whereas the "a" is silent in Lea, it is often mistakenly pronounced with an "ah" sound at the end of the name.

The surname Lea means "meadow", "pasture", "field", or an open clearing of space in a wooded area. There are analogous names in other Germanic languages such as "Loo" in Dutch or "Lōh" in Old High German, with identical meanings.

Lea is still a surviving surname in areas of southern England. Lea has also existed in North America since 1608 with the arrival of the English immigrant William Lea (son of Nicholas Lea, Waterford County, Ireland [Englishman not Irish]) to what is now King and Queen County in the Virginia Colony. Leas were among some of the very first immigrants to come to North America from England in the 17th century, and historically hailed from the southern United States in places such as Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Leas in the 19th century spread into the upper Midwest as well, and by the mid-20th century had reached as far west as southern California. Today, "Lea" comprises a very small percentage of the English surnames in the United States, with some American Leas able to trace back their ancestry to William Lea or one of his two brothers who came with him to Virginia in 1608.

Alex & Sierra

Alex & Sierra is an American duo consisting of Alex Kinsey (born May 21, 1991) and Sierra Deaton (born February 11, 1991), who won the third and final season of The X Factor USA. The duo are also dating. They were mentored by Simon Cowell and became the first and only group to win the American version of the show.

Their debut album It's About Us was released on October 7, 2014, on Columbia Records.

Career

2013: The X Factor

Alex & Sierra auditioned in New Orleans, Louisiana, making it to the next round after wowing the judges with a sultry version of Britney Spears' "Toxic". They continued on to the top 40 and received Simon Cowell as their mentor. For the Four Chair Challenge, Alex & Sierra took on the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John classic "You're The One That I Want" from the 1978 musical film Grease. The judges praised the duo for putting their own twist on the song. Kelly and Paulina felt the performance was "nice" and said they had "sexiness" to them, while Demi Lovato told them they were one of her favorite acts but questioned the future and their relationship. Simon Cowell was annoyed and disagreed, in support of Alex & Sierra as a couple. Despite this controversy, the duo made it through to the live shows. For the first live show, Alex and Sierra earned a spot in the top 12 after performing a stripped-down version of the Robin Thicke hit "Blurred Lines". Kelly Rowland wished it had been a bit sexier and thought it got corny at times, something Simon Cowell disagreed with, praising Alex & Sierra's performance, calling it "original" and "unique". For Motown Night, they took on "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. Paulina felt it was "natural," while Demi said it felt "organic" as well as very "hot" and "sexy". On the re-vote show, which happened due to a graphics error that nullified the votes, Alex & Sierra sang "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran. Simon said, "That was immaculate, it was ragged and raw."

Rae Sremmurd

Rae Sremmurd is an American hip hop duo, composed of two brothers, Khalif "Swae Lee" Brown (20 years old) and Aaquil "Slim Jimmy" Brown (22 years old). They are best known for their platinum singles "No Flex Zone" and "No Type"; the latter peaked at numbers 36 and 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100, respectively. They are based in Atlanta, Georgia. Their debut album SremmLife was released on January 6, 2015. The name "Rae Sremmurd" is derived from the duo's home label, EarDrummers, by spelling each word backwards. The two have drawn comparison to Kris Kross.

History

2013: Career beginnings

The duo had been working for several years under the moniker "Dem Outta St8 Boyz", producing music at home and playing at local parties in their mom's basement and bars respectively. Back then they went by the names Kid Krunk (Swae Lee), Caliboy (Slim Jimmy) and Lil Pantz who is no longer a part of the group. They used money from their part-time jobs to be able to partake in traveling and auditioning in contests. The boys performed as a trio with additional kid, Andre Harrys and appeared on television during the "Wild Out Wednesday" segment of BET's hip hop and R&B show 106 and Park. The trio appeared on the segment for a second time, in which they finished second place overall in the competition, and had also managed to have meetings with representatives from record labels Def Jam Recordings and Sony Music, although they were unable to sign a record deal.
