In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and ranked seventh in the world in the 2014 Global Cities Index. As of 2014, Chicago had the third largest gross metropolitan product in the United States at US$610.5 billion.

School of Rock, also called The School of Rock, is a 2003 American comedy film directed by Richard Linklater, written by Mike White, and starring Jack Black. The main plot follows struggling rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn (Black), who is kicked out of his band and subsequently disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. After witnessing the musical talent in his students, Dewey forms a band of fourth-graders to attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands and pay off his rent. The picture's supporting cast includes White, Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman and Miranda Cosgrove. School of Rock went on to gross over $131 million worldwide and became the highest grossing musical comedy of all time, until it was overtaken in 2015 by Pitch Perfect 2. A stage musical adaptation opened on Broadway in December 2015, and a television adaptation for Nickelodeon is also due to premiere in 2016.
The films opens with a rock band known as No Vacancy performing at a nightclub. Dewey Finn creates on-stage antics, including a stage dive that prematurely ends the performance. The next morning, Dewey wakes in the apartment he lives in with Ned Schneebly and Patty Di Marco. Ned and Patty pressure Dewey to make up for the share of the rent, which is four months overdue. When Dewey meets No Vacancy at a rehearsing facility, he finds out that he has been fired and replaced by another musician named Spider. Later, Dewey answers a phone call from Principal Rosalie Mullins, the principal of the Horace Green prep school, inquiring for Ned about a short-term position as a substitute teacher. Desperate for money, Dewey impersonates Ned and is hired. On his first day at the school, Dewey adopts the name "Mr. S" and spends his first day behaving erratically, much to the class' confusion.

This photo essay, part of our collaboration with Magnum Photos, documents Alex Webb's exploration of Chicago and the Loop. Inspired in part by one of his early influences, Ray Metzker's "My Camera and I in the Loop," he explores the streets of the US's "Second City." Though unlike the street photographers of the so-called Chicago School (Callahan, Metzger, Sturr, Sterling), Alex Webb has chosen to photograph the city's multitudinous character in color. Having spent most of his 30 year long career shooting outside of the US, Alex Webb turns his lens to his home nation during this very important election year. We Built This City traces the Irish involvement in building Chicago, from the famous I&M; canal to the rise of the Irish culturally and politically. A generation of Irish architects came to study under Mies van der Rohe at IIT in the fifties and sixties and this has inspired Irish architects working internationally today. The film is presented by Clare Lyster, Associate Professor at UIC School of Architecture, who is a writer and urbanist based in Chicago. We Built this City is a Dyehouse Films production, directed by Bonnie Dempsey and edited by David O'Sullivan. The film was screened as an introduction to a panel discussion about the contribution Irish people have made to the built and cultural fabric of Chicago, from historic to contemporary times, which took place at the Arts Club of Ch...
The inner-ring, Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, Ohio (population 51,000) calls itself a "walking school district". Since Lakewod has never had school buses in its history, kids naturally grow up walking and biking to school. Mornings and afternoons are a beehive of activity on the streets adjacent to schools as kids and parents flow to and from classrooms. You can feel the energy and the students are likely healthier, happier and more aware of their community for it. The freedom of being able to walk and socialize with friends is immeasurable. According to city planner Bryce Sylvester, "Lakewood is the densest community between New York and Chicago" and strives to structure their city so that every child is in walking distance of their school. It's a fact that has also paid off financiall...
