From Friday 4th to Sunday 6th November, 2016, the Royal Botanic Gardens was the base camp for the highly informative fifth annual “Port of Spain BioBlitz and Nature Fair”. Hosted by the Trinidad & Tobago Field Naturalists Club (TTFNC) and the University of the West Indies Zoology Museum, the occasion included over twenty organizations, NGO and charities.

Prominent businessman and cultural activist, Earl Crosby, passed away at the age of sixty-five on Wednesday 3rd August, 2016, after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. Crosby was warded at the Vitas House Hospice, St. James at the time of his passing.

Memorial Service for Asami Nagakiya

Asami Nagakiya, a thirty-year-old professional musician from Japan who had been coming to Trinidad for seven years to play the steelpan, was murdered during the 2016 Carnival celebrations. Her body was discovered on Ash Wednesday in the Queen’s Park Savannah near the Queen’s Royal College.

On Saturday 16th January 2016, the Kalypso Revue Tent Judging Night was hosted at the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU) Hall on Wrightson Road, Port of Spain. The tent, which is managed by veteran calypsonian Michael “Sugar Aloes” Osuna, was filled with enthusiastic lovers of the calypso art form.

The Life and Times of Donald “Junior” Noel

Donald “Junior” Noel, percussionist and master drummer of the Northwest Laventille Cultural Movement passed away recently on 28th November, 2015. Junior Noel, as he preferred to be called, was born on 6th August, 1960. From an early stage he showed an affinity for drumming and was a foundation member of several cultural groups.

Nrityanjali Theatre Institute for the Arts and Culture, presents “Shakuntalam”

On Tuesday 19th July, 2016, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-Operation, High Commission of India and the Nrityanjali Theatre presented an Indian Classical Ballet titled “Shakuntalam”, a Sanskrit play written by Kalidasa. This dance drama is the story of love between Shakuntala and Dushayanta played by Alana Rajah and Kyle Robert Poliah.
