Allrighty….

As of half past ten this morning, I am a homeowner.

I can’t tell you how strange it is to walk into an office and tell someone “How about loaning me a couple of hundred thousand dollars? C’mon, you know I am good for it…”

Here are some pictures of the house.

Next up? Kitchen cabinets…

A Victory for, er, Democracy

Sure thing, just ask Robert Fisk (warning, that’s a pay link. I bet you’ll think of something…), the last journalist not cowering in his hotel room in Baghdad…

The media boys and girls will be expected to play along with this. ‘Transition of power,’ says the hourly logo on CNN’s live coverage of the election, though the poll is for a parliament to write a constitution and the men who will form a majority within it will have no power.

They have no control over their oil, no authority over the streets of Baghdad, let alone the rest of the country, no workable army or loyal police force. Their power is that of the American military and its 150,000 soldiers whom we could see at the main Baghdad intersections yesterday.

The big television networks have been given a list of five polling stations where they will be ‘allowed’ to film. Close inspection of the list shows that four of the five are in Shia Muslim areas where the polling will probably be high and one in an upmarket Sunni area where it will be moderate. Every working class Sunni polling station will be out of bounds to the press. I wonder if the television lads will tell us that today when they show voters ‘flocking’ to the polls.

But, hey, man, if this is the signal we need for Washington to fire the starter pistol for the race to withdraw, then by all means… ON YOUR MARKS….

GET SET….

Shopping List

Mrs. Dog is acting in a theater production of The Diary of Anne Frank right now. Went to see it last night. It’s a good production, Mrs. Dog is, as always, a stellar actor, and the show is, despite its tiny handful of faults, moving and frightening.

Lately, I have been thinking about the Nazis more than is probably healthy for a young man like myself. I watched The Pianist some months ago, and a friend recently watched Triumph of the Will. Whoops, wrong photo

I can’t watch the Nazis, or think about the Nazis and the rounding up of the Jews in Warsaw and Utrecht without running a mental inventory of the guns in my gunsafe and ammo in my closet. Watching Anne Frank, I found myself wondering what would have happened if the Jews of Warsaw had been as heavily armed as I am.

I may be a leftist and an environmentalist and an advocate for a safer and saner society, but I am not a fool.

Moveon.org might need to throw it in reverse when someone makes the Bushista/Nazi comparison, but I feel no such compunction. These people scare me. Tomorrow I will be at the Gun Store™ buying a case of .308. If nothing else, milk jugs will quake at the mention of my name for years to come.

Picture time

These two pups are up for adoption. Mrs. Dog and I are trying to figure out if we can afford them in terms of time and space.

From the description in the email that I got:

Two 8-week old puppies still avilable.

Mother is Chocolate Lab, Father is unknown

These sweet puppies need a good home. I don’t want to have to take them to the animal shelter. But we already have 4 adult dogs plus other animals.

One is male and one is female. One is all black and the other is black with white paws.

did I mention?

We close on the house on Monday. Then begins my leastest favorite passtime- MOVING.

After moving I have to figure out what to do about kitchen cabinets and closet space, since this little farmhouse is pretty spare on both.

After that, it should be getting close to tilling time. Then chickens. Hopefully, shortly after that, Mrs. Dog will be able to live in the same town as her husband.

I think that (ideally) the housewarming party will be on March 5th. You’re invited.

Payola stops here

Right?

I mean, now that they’ve been busted twice….

After the revelation that another columnist who supported his administration’s policies received government money, President Bush said Wednesday that he disapproved of the practice and wanted it to stop.

Please.

Don’t.

Stop.

Sugartime, ladies!

Josh Marshall points us towards this:

The nation’s new education secretary denounced PBS on Tuesday for spending public money on a cartoon with lesbian characters, saying many parents would not want children exposed to such lifestyles.

The not-yet-aired episode of Postcards From Buster shows the title character, an animated bunny named Buster, on a trip to Vermont — a state known for recognizing same-sex civil unions. The episode features two lesbian couples, although the focus is on farm life and maple sugaring.

A PBS spokeswoman said late Tuesday that the nonprofit network has decided not to distribute the episode, called Sugartime!, to its 349 stations.

It’s those hyper-tolerant commies at PBS again!

A friend of mine watched Triumph of the Will last night. He said it was the creepiest thing he had ever seen.

I asked him if he had any moments of creeping “This is too familiar”-ism, and he refused to comment while at work. That certainly raised my eyebrows, and he just nodded at me.
