The question is: how is that three hundred years later the Catalans still speak Catalan? After 1714, the new Spanish government launched a project to unify the whole with a single language, Spanish. But at that time in Catalonia practically only Catalan was spoken. In 1786, Judge Francisco Zamora scoured Catalonia with an order of King Charles III to determine whether the measures that had been dictated to achieve that goal had taken effect or not. In the mid-nineteenth century, the language of the country was changing. The classes had taken Spanish as usual language and the imposition of Spanish in schools began to notice. At the same time, Irish Gaelic, which until then was the majority language in Ireland, began to disappear. To the extent that in the early twentieth century, when Ireland became an independent state, the Irish language had practically disappeared. In Catalonia could pass it. But then a group of intellectuals propose to recover the Catalan literary language. And in 1859 organized the first Floral Games retrieved. The two dictatorships of the twentieth century retook the project unifying violently. But the real linguistic change came from the big migrations of the century. Many of those newcomers initiated a new historical change. In Santa Coloma de Gramenet, the most Spanish-speaking city in the Catalan country, a group of immigrant parents drove the first immersion experience. Després del 1714, la nova administració espanyola va engegar un projecte per unificar tot el territori amb una sola llengua, el castellà. Però a la Catalunya de llavors pràcticament només es parlava català. El 1786, el jutge Francisco de Zamora va recórrer tot Catalunya amb un encàrrec del rei Carles III: esbrinar si les mesures que s'havien dictat per aconseguir aquell objectiu havien fet efecte o no. A mitjans del segle XIX, la llengua del país estava canviant. Les classes benestants havien assumit el castellà com a llengua habitual i la imposició del castellà a les escoles es començava a notar. En aquesta mateixa època, el gaèlic irlandès, que fins aleshores era la llengua majoritària a Irlanda, va començar a desaparèixer. Fins al punt que a principis del segle XX, quan Irlanda es va convertir en un estat independent, la llengua irlandesa pràcticament havia desaparegut. A Catalunya podia passar el mateix. Però aleshores un grup d'intel·lectuals va proposar-se recuperar la llengua literària catalana. I l'any 1859 van organitzar els primers Jocs Florals recuperats. Les dues dictadures del segle XX van reprendre el projecte unificador d'una manera violenta. Però l'autèntic canvi lingüístic va venir dels grans moviments migratoris del segle. Molts d'aquells nouvinguts van impulsar un nou canvi històric. A Santa Coloma de Gramenet, la ciutat més castellanoparlant del país, un grup de pares immigrants van impulsar la primera experiència d'immersió lingüística.
