Ernie Ball (born Roland Sherwood Ball; August 30, 1930 – September 9, 2004) was an American entrepreneur, musician, and innovator, widely acclaimed as a revolutionary in the development of guitar-related products. He began as a club and local television musician and small business entrepreneur, building an international business in guitars and accessories that would eventually gross US$40 million a year.
Ball was born Roland Sherwood Ball in Santa Monica, California, USA, and grew up in a musical family, the son of Frances (née Shankland) and Roland Adelbert Ball. His paternal grandfather, Ernest Ball, wrote the standard, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and his father was a car salesman who taught Hawaiian steel guitar on the side. Although Ball initially picked up the steel at age nine to please his father, he became bored and gave it up. In his early teens he began to take a renewed interest in the instrument, practicing as many as three hours a day. Within a year he was a member of the Musicians Union.
Ernest Loyal Hughes Jr. is a former American football center who played five seasons in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1978 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and attended Capital High School in Boise, Idaho.
Hughes & Kettner is a German brand of guitar and bass amplifiers, cabinets and effects processors. It was founded in Neunkirchen in 1984 and is based in St.Wendel since 1987.
Notable users of Hughes & Kettner products include Alex Lifeson and Tommy Thayer, who have signature amplifiers by the company (The TriAmp MKII Alex Lifeson and the Duotone Tommy Thayer). Other Hughes and Kettner users are Peredur ap Gwynedd, Nuno Bettencourt, Tony Macalpine, Rocky George, Eluveitie, Dave Sharman and Allan Holdsworth.
Hughes & Kettner, up until recently, relied on its flagship TriAmp and Statesman family of amplifiers. Recently, however, Hughes & Kettner has worked to establish itself in the high-gain 50-100 watt amp head market. With the recent release of the Coreblade amplifier head, Hughes & Kettner is spending most of its resources in this market.
In September 2011, Hughes & Kettner released the Tubemeister 18, an 18-watt, 5 kilogram, head. Meant to appeal to the gigging guitarist that values versatility and mobility, this amplifier is small and works best with smaller cabinets, generally in the area of one or two 12-inch speakers. The amp has received a lot of attention for its "Power Soak" feature, which enables the player to leave volume and gain levels high yet limit the output of the head to more reasonable levels. It is clearly designed by Hughes & Kettner to attend to the guitarists that perform consistently at a variety of volumes, even sporting a "red box" output (XLR) and the option to mute the speaker output entirely (intended for mixing desks).
Yellow jacket or yellowjacket is the common name in North America for predatory wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries. Most of these are black and yellow like the Eastern yellowjacket Vespula maculifrons and the Saxon wasp Dolichovespula saxonica; some are black and white like the bald-faced hornet, Dolichovespula maculata. Others may have the abdomen background color red instead of black. They can be identified by their distinctive markings, their occurrence only in colonies, and a characteristic, rapid, side-to-side flight pattern prior to landing. All females are capable of stinging. Despite having drawn the fear and loathing of humans, yellow jackets are in fact important predators of pest insects.
Yellow jackets are sometimes mistakenly called "bees" (as in "meat bees"), given that they are similar in size and appearance and both sting, but yellow jackets are actually wasps. They may be confused with other wasps, such as hornets and paper wasps. Polistes dominula, a species of paper wasp, is very frequently misidentified as a yellow jacket. A typical yellow jacket worker is about 12 mm/0.5 in long, with alternating bands on the abdomen; the queen is larger, about 19 mm/0.75 in long (the different patterns on their abdomens help separate various species). Workers are sometimes confused with honey bees, especially when flying in and out of their nests. Yellow jackets, in contrast to honey bees, are not covered with tan-brown dense hair on their bodies, they do not carry pollen, and do not have the flattened hairy hind legs used to carry it.
