East Timor (i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.
Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor, on the eastern part, and Indonesia, on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District. The island covers an area of 30,777 square kilometres. The name is a variant of timur, Malay for "east"; it is so called because it lies at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Anthropologists identify eleven distinct ethno-linguistic groups in Timor. The largest are the Atoni of western Timor, and the Tetum of central and eastern Timor. Most indigenous Timorese languages belong to the Timor–Babar branch of the Austronesian languages spoken throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The non-Austronesian languages are thought to be related to languages spoken on Halmahera and in Western New Guinea. Some are so mixed it is difficult to tell which family they descend from.
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
East Timorese may refer to:
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.
During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation. The UN's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union and their respective allies. The organization participated in major actions in Korea and the Congo, as well as approving the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. The organization's membership grew significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its budget for economic and social development programmes far outstripped its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold War, the UN took on major military and peacekeeping missions across the world with varying degrees of success.

http://democracynow.org - While covering the United Nations climate summit, we speak with Constâncio Pinto, minister of commerce, industry and environment of Timor-Leste, or East Timor. East Timor was compared to Western Sahara for decades. Both countries were occupied in 1975, Timor by Indonesia and Western Sahara by Morocco. Both populations supported U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for referenda for self-determination, which Timor got in 1999 and voted overwhelmingly to become independent. The people of Western Sahara, however, are still calling for that referendum to take place. Minister Constâncio Pinto just came from East Timor, where on November 12 he was involved in the 25th anniversary observance of the Santa Cruz massacre, where the Indonesian military attacked, using ...

In July 2015, they led a trip to Asia's youngest nation Timor Leste to support and raise funds for HIAM Health. It clearly faces an uphill struggle: Since independence in 2002 the country has had to rebuild its infrastructure and economy after a brutal Indonesian occupation. Now with nearly half of the population under 15 years old, enormous resources need to be applied to education and health. TCRP also visisted a green school in Ma...

“Iralalaru HPP” is a Bouvet Media documentary on a planned hydroelectric power plant in Lautem, East Timor (Timor-Leste). It shows principles for hydropower generation. Tetum with English subtext. This project planned a hydropower plant that may produce cheap and reliable electricity for Timor-Leste for 100 years. It has a capacity to produce a maximum of 28 MW (million watts), or a total of 189 GWh (billion watt-hours) per year, to the low cost of 0.07 US dollars per kWh. This has the potential to save 50 million US dollars per year as compared to using diesel based generators, using a clean and renewable energy source. “Iralalaru HPP” was filmed 2007–08. It was directed, filmed and edited by Basil Rolandsen for HydroTimor. A Bouvet Media Production.

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media is a 1992 documentary film that explores the political life and ideas of linguist, intellectual, and political activist Noam Chomsky. Canadian filmmakers Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick expand the analysis of political economy and mass media presented in Manufacturing Consent, a 1988 book Chomsky coauthored with Edward S. Herman. Sandalwood trees are evergreen
Cut them down
Plant coffee beans
Build no schools
Construct no roads
Mark them as fools
Let ignorance rule
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
Red is the cross that covers out shame
Every Kingdom, every land
Has it's heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
In coral sands
On golden shores
Buried are those
Who lived their lives
No place to hide for
Father and child
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
We shake the hands that kill and forgive
Every Kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
On barren graves
Where flowers won't grow
Blooms our Red cross lovingly
This nightingale deed
So we can be free
Stranded on their island
This army of the silent
We toast our own goodwill and forget
Every kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
