Tight turns, breathtaking drops and magnificent views make the 61 kilometer rail link between St. Moritz and Tirano, originally opened in 1906, into one of the most impressive sections of the Rhaetian Railway. Snow, wind and freezing temperatures make the battle with King Winter a though one for the Rhaetian Railway staff. This film shows the many faces of a Bemina winter between Pontresina and Poschiavo. Early morning snow clearance with the 9218. Fantastic panoramas of a sunny day between Ospizio Bemina and Alp Grüm, snow storms at the stations, the cold stillness of the almost deserted Cavaglia and wanderous images of the Dampf Schneeschleuder in its line clearing challenge. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► http://goo.gl/HYQdhg Join us. Part 2; from Ospizio Bernina to Cavaglia Part 1 is here: https://youtu.be/dY7hBfKYNYk In 2005 the REOS team visited the Berninabahn in the Southern Switzerland. The line was completed on 5th July 1910 and trains only ran during the summer months between St. Moritz and Tirano. Trains ran on 750 volt DC until 1935 when it was changed to 1000 volt DC which is still used today. The line was almost bankrupt when it merged with the Rhatischebahn in 1944. The RhB renovated the line to provide a winter service as well as for military reasons. With a 7% grade it is one of the steepest adhesion lines in the world and with a height of 2253 above see level it is the highest railway crossing in the Alps. The line was added to the Unesco list of World Heritage sites on 7th July 2008. REOS filmed ...

The Bernina Pass (el. 2328 m.) (Italian: Passo del Bernina) is a high mountain pass in the Bernina Range of the Alps, in the canton of Graubünden (Grisons) in eastern Switzerland. It connects the famous resort town of St. Moritz in the Engadin valley with the Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo, which ends in the Italian town of Tirano in Valtellina. The pass lies a few kilometres east of Piz Bernina. A lower pass is located west of the Bernina Pass, at 2,253 metres. The Bernina Pass is crossed by road and rail, with a popular tourist train, the Bernina Express operating year-round between Chur and Tirano. The train crosses the lowest pass at 2,253 metres (at Ospizio Bernina) - it is the highest adhesion railway route in Europe. Lago Bianco, Lej Nair and Lej Pitschen are located on the pass.
