Turkmenistan (ⁱ/tɜːrkˈmɛnᵻstæn/ or ⁱ/tɜːrkmɛnᵻˈstɑːn/; Turkmen: Türkmenistan/Түркменистан, pronounced [tyɾkmeniˈθtan]) is a country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west.

Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. In medieval times, Merv was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas resources. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert. Since 1993, citizens have received government-provided electricity, water and natural gas free of charge.

투르크메니스탄, 제 5차 실내무도아시안게임 개최 준비 완료 The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is set to take place in the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan in September. Our Kim Hyesung reports on how the preparation work is going, and what holding the sports event means to its people. The countdown to Ashgabat 2017 has begun, and Turkmenistan is ready. Thirty multi-sport venues and a main Olympic stadium that can seat 45-thousand people are all connected by a monorail. "More than 55-hundred athletes from 62 countries will compete at the fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games this September. This is the first major global sports event ever to be hosted by Turkmenistan, whose buildings showcase both tradition and modernity." The main stadium is in the shape of a horse, showing Turkmenistan’s love for its native breed and national treasure -- the Akhalteke, the mascot of the games symbolizing speed, power and unity. This former Soviet republic, which achieved independence in 1991, has invested over 5 billion U.S. dollars in the facility. It's 145-thousand square meters in size, and a testament to Turkmenistan's success, it represents the biggest sports complex in Central Asia and in the history of the games. "It’s a very big boost for the nation itself, to deliver such a large scale event where we expect more than 300 thousand spectators as well as we are going to have large amount of workforce and volunteers, so overall I think it will be a positive emotion for lots of people." A positive emotion that Turkmen youngsters can't seem to hide even during the test games held in the last week of April. "We saw so many foreigners here, it’s really interesting and cool. We are glad we can also participate in the games." "I’m so excited for the games. Go, go Turkmenistan " Delivering a perfect experience will require not just world-class facilities but also friendly service. They're training more than ten thousand volunteers, some of them in Korea, the most recent host of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. "In 2014, young Turkmen volunteers received training at the Incheon Asian Games in Korea. And there are Korean organizers helping with the planning and execution of Ashgabat 2017. Cooperation in the field of sports can boost people-to-people ties and mutual understanding. It's a great move for the two countries, which mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relationship this year." Under the themes of health, friendship and inspiration, Ashgabat 2017 will host 21 events including Taekwondo, kickboxing, chess and equestrian jumping -- from September 17th to the 27th.
