In this video I use Citrix Workspace Cloud and Amazon AWS to show how simple it is to setup a demo XenApp/XenDesktop environment. The idea is to show off the value and some of the features with the CWC product.
A few things I'd like to point out:
*In a real world POC you'd want to configure Provisioning of the VM, not manually creating them like I do. However, if all you want to do is stand up 5 or so VMs nothing is wrong with just doing that manually, like I do.
* This demo was recorded using the CWC beta site. The current site (the site that most of you will see once we go public with it) is a bit different but you should still have no problem following this video even using the new site.
*Throughout this video I refer to the "Edge Service" this was renamed to "Cloud Connector".

Finally up! I'm super proud of this MEP, even though (as always) we had so much work to do and replace a lot of parts all the partecipants did an awesome job and follow the theme! (Except Shiemi but she's here to fill the space, we know she's not tsundere). Anyway we decided to do another Tsundere MEP since the other was so appreciated and was the first MEP I organize with AWS. Well, nothing else to say, just thanks all our members, our guests and our awesome leaders that helped me with replacing!

ABOUT THE AUDITION
Thank you so much everyone for joining our audition! I'm so happy that many awesome editors joined so we ended up taking a lot more than expected. First of all I think it's fair to know how we judged! We were four judges, the three leaders and a member. We give everyone a vote from 1 to 10 and then do the average between our votes. Everything was done mathematically. We're not going to make the ranking public because we know someone might get offended and honestly I rather like to avoid dramas. AWS Private WAN
* need to control the latency and loss between data centres
* does this apply to Enterprises - is this a validation of private WAN
* Amazon is running hundreds or even thousands of services over their networks and when working at this scale it would quite difficult to work out where a problem is.
* So building and operating your own WAN makes sense.
* Keep in mind that its actually small network - 68 POPS, one customers.. LOTS OF BANDWIDTH but nothing like a commercial SP with millions of pops, many thousands of customers. Different problems.
* 100G WAN makes the physical hard. Not the operation or software.
High Availability
* HA DCs really similar to enterprise design
* only 14 regions (some enterprises have more than that)
* simplicity is winner or less is more.
* Transit Center is a "telecom closet" and similar principles in Enterprise design. Its where the WAN meets the LAN.
Fibre Design
* attention to detail is important. The physical nature of cables is key to AWS success.
* Most enterprises don't focus on physical cabling as a key success factor in reliability and uptime.

* 80/20 rule - since you scale beyond a certain point, the gains from careful hardware design, good organisation and focus stop delivering

* the network device as a mainframe isn't something I've actually realised but its a strong analogy.
* Once you break up the pieces, innovation has happened at a faster pace for servers and applications. It will happen in networking.
* Whitebox isn't about ONLY about cost - it was about reliability.
* Show judgement and keep it simple. Software overlays deliver on the promise of keeping it simple. AWS
Vendor Support
* Vendor support is a problem
* duplicating the problem
* every network is a snowflake (they aren't) so duplicating the problem is your cost not theirs. wrong incentives.
25G Ethernet
* 25G Ethernet is the future. 10G its over.
* 40G is almost 4 times the optic cost.
* 25G almost the same price as 10G
ASICS and Custom Hardware
* Broadcom ASICs - but also mentioned Cavium, Mellanox, Marvell, Barefoot,
* 13 Terabit speeds coming.
Software Defined Networking -
* need to have it to offer multi-tenant networking.
Using Hardware Adapters to accelerate SDN performance,
* offload the network and leave the resources of the servers for applications.
* Co-processor 1/10th power, 1/10th latency, 1/10th the cost.
* Latency improves performance and using h/w acceleration in NICs improves latency by big margins.
* This is so important that they make their own NIC silicon.

Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services (AWS), is a collection of cloud computing services, also called web services, that make up a cloud-computing platform offered by Amazon.com. These services operate from 12 geographical regions across the world. The most central and well-known of these services arguably include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also known as "EC2", and Amazon Simple Storage Service, also known as "S3". Amazon markets AWS as a service to provide large computing capacity more quickly and more cheaply than a client company building an actual physical server farm.
Architecture
AWS is located in 12 geographical "regions": US East (Northern Virginia), where the majority of AWS servers are based, US West (northern California), US West (Oregon), Brazil (São Paulo), Europe (Ireland and Germany), Southeast Asia (Singapore), East Asia (Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing) and Australia (Sydney). There is also a "GovCloud", based in the Northwestern United States, provided for U.S. government customers, complementing existing government agencies already using the US East Region. Each Region is wholly contained within a single country and all of its data and services stay within the designated Region.

In this video I use Citrix Workspace Cloud and Amazon AWS to show how simple it is to setup a demo XenApp/XenDesktop environment. The idea is to show off the value and some of the features with the CWC product.
A few things I'd like to point out:
*In a real world POC you'd want to configure Provisioning of the VM, not manually creating them like I do. However, if all you want to do is stand up 5 or so VMs nothing is wrong with just doing that manually, like I do.
* This demo was recorded using the CWC beta site. The current site (the site that most of you will see once we go public with it) is a bit different but you should still have no problem following this video even using the new site.
*Throughout this video I refer to the "Edge Service" this was renamed to "Cloud Connector".

Finally up! I'm super proud of this MEP, even though (as always) we had so much work to do and replace a lot of parts all the partecipants did an awesome job and follow the theme! (Except Shiemi but she's here to fill the space, we know she's not tsundere). Anyway we decided to do another Tsundere MEP since the other was so appreciated and was the first MEP I organize with AWS. Well, nothing else to say, just thanks all our members, our guests and our awesome leaders that helped me with replacing!
