Film budgeting refers to the process by which a line producer, unit production manager, or filmmaker prepares a budget for a film production. This document, which could be over 150 pages long, is used to secure financing for and lead to pre-production and production of the film. Multiple drafts of the budget may be required to whittle down costs. A budget is typically divided into four sections: above the line (creative talent), below the line (direct production costs), post-production (editing, visual effects, etc.), and other (insurance, completion bond, etc.) Film financing can be acquired from a private investor, sponsor, product placement, film studio, entertainment company, and/or out-of-pocket funds.
Production Workshop (PW) is an entirely student-run theater at Brown University. Founded in 1960, it is one of the oldest student-run theaters in the United States. It puts up 7 full-scale productions each year in its main black box theatre. All aspects of PW productions, from acting to designing to running the box office, are managed entirely by undergraduate students.
PW controls two theater spaces located in T.F. Green Hall: the Upstairs Space and the Downstairs Space. The Upstairs Space is a small black box theater with small but effective lighting and sound systems. Use of the Upstairs Space is allotted by a lottery held four times a year. The Upstairs Space frequently serves as a venue for full-length plays, musicals, staged readings, performance art, art installations, poetry readings, workshops, and dance concerts, among other projects.
The Downstairs Space, PW's main theater space, is a 35'x55' black box theater with 96 dimmers and an up-to-date sound system. In this space, PW produces 3 plays in the fall semester and 4 plays in the spring semester. Depending on the orientation of the stage, Downstairs Space shows usually have seating for 80-120 audience members.
