Jamaica (i/dʒəˈmeɪkə/) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.
Previously inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Named Santiago, it remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered the island and renamed it Jamaica. Under British rule, Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with its plantation economy highly dependent on slaves imported from Africa, followed later by Chinese and Indian indentured labour. All slaves were fully emancipated in 1838, with independence from the United Kingdom achieved on 6 August 1962.
Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), sometimes named incorrectly as John Merrick, was an Englishman with severe deformities who was exhibited as a human curiosity named the Elephant Man. He became well known in London society after he went to live at the London Hospital. Merrick was born in Leicester, and began to develop abnormally during the first few years of his life. His skin appeared thick and lumpy, he developed enlarged lips, and a bony lump grew on his forehead. One of his arms and both of his feet became enlarged and at some point during his childhood he fell and damaged his hip, resulting in permanent lameness. When he was 11, his mother died, and his father soon remarried. Merrick left school at the age of 13 and had difficulty finding employment. Rejected by his father and stepmother, he left home. In late 1879, Merrick, aged 17, entered the Leicester Union Workhouse.
In 1884, after four years in the workhouse, Merrick contacted a showman named Sam Torr and proposed that Torr should exhibit him. Torr agreed and arranged for a group of men to manage Merrick, whom they named the Elephant Man. After touring the East Midlands, Merrick travelled to London to be exhibited in a penny gaff shop on Whitechapel Road which was rented by showman Tom Norman. Norman's shop, directly across the street from the London Hospital, was visited by a surgeon named Frederick Treves, who invited Merrick to be examined and photographed. Soon after Merrick's visits to the hospital, Tom Norman's shop was closed by the police, and Merrick's managers sent him to tour in Europe.

May 7, 2015 Our last stop for the cruise was in Jamaica. We took a tour bus and went to Bluehole Falls and it was my first time cliff jumping and it took me awhile to jump. S our tour guide was Samantha and she was teaching us some few Jamaican words and it was really fun. Cruise video over here: https://vimeo.com/134935386 If you want to watch a preview of the whole trip, here is the video: facebook.com/graceyu28/videos/vb.1638161275/10203799028009657/?type=3 Pictures will be on Facebook while for videos here. I had the great pleasure to go on an adventure to Jamaica and capture Janique and Eric's destination wedding celebrations. It was my first time to Jamaica and I must admit I really LOVED it. It reminded me of Africa in more ways than one, and the hot weather and ocean water was so needed after shooting New Years Eve at -50C back here in Winnipeg... Doing destination weddings is becoming more and more popular with couples. With amazing deals from resorts and great local travel agencies it is way easier to do than you might think. Yes, it is impossible to have each and every person you would have invited to your local wedding come to a tropical destination, but the adventure of it all makes up for that. I was lucky enough to have some time to see Ocho Rios outside of the resort thank y...

Sumba is an island the size of Jamaica in the Indonesian archipelago that has been cut off from the rest of the world for so long that its ancient animistic traditions survive to this day. It is the setting for ritual battles called Pasola which take place every year in February and March. The Pasola is a fight between rival clans who hurl spears at each other on horseback in order to "fertilize" the soil with spilled human blood. This is volume seven of my personal tour journal. This video is a bit different than the rest. My tour originally had been scheduled to go through the south into Arkansas, but in Ohio, Chris invited me to travel with him to the East Coast where he and Rob Reid were planning on doing about a week of shows together. So we drove. A non-stop 24 hour drive (literally) from Murfreesboro, Tennessee to Boston. After the incredibly long drive, Chris and I crashed with Rob at his sisters' place in Jamaica Plain. After a solid night of sleep and some food (thanks for the pancakes Martin!), we moved on to Brunswick, Maine and camped out near Monmouth. One night we stopped at an awesome bar in Hallowell called, The Liberal Cup, where I had THE BEST oatmeal stout I've ever tasted. When we le...
At the Makka Pro International Surf Contest this summer the stakes were high. With 2016 marking the 10th staging of the event, organizers made the bold decision to celebrate this milestone by moving the competition from St. Thomas to Kingston. "The venue definitely mixes it up, keeps the competition on a higher level," explained Nathan Adams, a photographer with international surfing magazine - Eastern Surf Magazine. The two-day competition was held at the Wreck surfing beach on the Palisadoes strip in Kingston. Though a new location for the event, the Wreck has long been rooted in Jamaican surf history. In their 1912 travel guide, the Jamaica Tourist Association (now the Jamaica Tourist Board) listed Myrtle Bank Hotel as offering "...a launch [that] leaves, when required, for surf bathi...
